Early and first thing in the morning after breakfast was the best time for Ancient Runes, the students will have open fresh minds and full stomachs. The classroom was arranged traditionally, Ab made sure nothing was hazardous to the kids when he redecorated the room. The desks and chairs were neatly organized in parallel five rows, that's one side of the big classroom. As you walk through the door and to your left is the professor's desk and blackboard. Professor Botros is sitting on his chair writing something on a parchment.
For this lesson, there is a small pile of mysterious tools next to each desk, it hardly reaches up to your knees. A piece of cloth is draped over to conceal what's underneath it. "Do not touch the pile next to your seat" is written on the blackboard behind the professor. If you do try to remove it with your hand, you'll feel a slight pinch. Do not touch.
Greet your new teacher, take a seat, write your name and year on the piece of parchment set on your table, and wait for the lesson to start. Please stay quiet and do not speak.
ooc:The class has officially STARTED. Don't announce your arrival but pretend you've been here all along. ^.^

"I will ask you not to touch that yet, young boy." His voice came just as loud and firm as before. "The instructions are clear." He waved his wand and the writings on the blackboard grew significantly bigger.
Just a mere hair of reaching the cover, he was caught in the act. Looking back at the Professor with his hand still outreached he saw the words printed in a larger size than ever on the board behind him. Point well taken then, as Wade instead let his hand brush his hair back. "Yes, sir." Leaning back in his chair slightly in a more comfortable position.

Professor Botros. Wade let that name sink it to memory... Wait, one of the late professors taught this class?! Well then.. Wade sat up straighter to give his respects in silence... Before the lesson continued.
Runes, runes, runes.. they sound like lovely gems to Wade. Given the different names of runes, and well.. the Professor said they were going to learn how to understand them.. that kind of thinking led Wade to raise his hand, "Sounds like runes are some sort of code.. like a language."

She angled her head inquisitively before bowing it in their moment of silence. This much she understood, the solemnity of respecting those who passed away. What she didnt understand was that there seemed to have been a Professor that died prior to this one.

....When the discussion started Aquila started to twirl one of her curls at the end of her index finger. Runes... she knew only the very basic of this, and that was only because the Priestesses insisted that their ancient text be learned just as they are. She raised her hand as she replied "Uhm... Runes are really really old alphabets from.... the North." Well she's from Wales, everything else about this is just North to her.

Braison always TOLD Elodie about Runes when they were talking about school. And she was pretty certain she was going to be good at this subject, and piped up her answer, along with her hand in the air.
"Well, sir, my older brother told me that Runes are the German alphabet. That one day, a super long time ago - a really wise, important Wizard asked a group of children to draw the alphabet. Of course, they weren't even old enough to know the alphabet properly and so.....yeah." Elodie grinned then, and set her hand back down, leaning her head into it.

Oh, Runes man was speaking! Alec took one swift glance over the parchment before looking up at the Runes Man. ... Botros. Okay. Easy name to remember. The fourth year placed his elbow on the table and his chin on the palm of his hand, his grey-blue eyes stuck on the Runes Man who...
BLINK.
Well... that was awesome! A bit... unexpected but awesome. Good on you, Botros. ... BLINK AGAIN. What in the name of Superman's super senses were Odin Runes? They weren't... something they had to now already, right? Because Alec knew as much about those as he did about dancing. ... Which... was next to nothing.
So... the question. What were Runes? Alec furrowed his eyebrows in concentration, his eyes wandering towards a pile near someone else's desk. Runes... runes... runes... OH. "Professor?" he asked, raising his hand tentatively, "Erm... well... when someone says 'runes', to me that means that... erm... well, they're a set of symbols that represent an old language? Like a sort of ancient alphabet?"

.... okay, so far the naughty boy did not cause a riot of any kind. That was good. "Good mor--" He paused, looking at the apple the girl just left on his desk. His smile was back instantly, it was for him, right? He loved this kid. Not only did she bring food this early in the morning (which meant she was one of those who had breakfast) but she brought a healthy kind of food. Could he go and pat her head? He didn't, seeing as the girl already was seated. "Thank you for the apple." And he took a bite off it to make her happy. It was polite, too.
"Good morning everyone and welcome to your first Ancient Runes class this term." Botros started, giving looks to those not paying attention to him. The piles were obviously too intriguing for young people. "I'm Abraham Botros, your new Runes professor. Was it too late for her to run out of the classroom before she was sentenced to detention? Natalie was worried that the odds of her pleasing the Ancient Runes professor with that apple were not in her favour. Maybe she should have taken Arithmancy instead. All of her worries went away when the old man thanked her for the apple, though. She excitedly sprung upright in her seat when he took a bite. Aww! What a sweet man he was! Rather than loudly reply from her seat, Natalie simply gave him one of her signature smiles. Gold star for you, Professor Botros!
And then class began after a moment of silence. Natalie couldn’t help but glance around the classroom after the professor mentioned the person whom he had replaced. What happened to the former professor? Making note to look into that later, this girl’s mind went right to work when the class was asked what runes were. She had read a bit about runes before, so she was confident in raising her hand. “Professor, the word rune means ‘secret’ or ‘mystery.’ They are symbols that were used by Germans a very long time ago.”

Runes. Ancient Runes. This class...didn't make any sense to her. At all. All the symbols floated around in front of her eye and didn't mean anything. Even after two years of studying it. She was SO glad she didn't NEED it in life. No being a code breaker or what-not for her. Nu-huh. She'd just stick with singing or caring for animals. NODNOD. This year though, she'd try extra hard to understand, though she didn't expect brilliant result. Maybe this new Professor would be amazing and she'd finally understand.
Hopefully..
Listen carefully then, Bliss, she thought to herself and brought her attention back to the Professor. She needed to buckle down if she was going to have any chance of understanding this at all. What were runes? Seemed like...simple enough a question. Good for a simple answer. Even if it was wrong. Bliss raised her hand and waited..."Runes are essentially an ancient alphabet," she said semi-confidently. Right? She was right, right? MELLOW.
The twelve year old listened carefully as the new professor introduced himself. Professor Botros, okay. ...But wait. What? The LATE professor? Did Professor Christensen DIE?! She glanced around the room quizzically. How did I not know that? He was...he was nice enough. What on earth could have happened? She tried to pull her focus back and decided she would have to talk to Ethan after class. Maybe he knows what happened.
She raised her hand like others had already, and though she did not have a new answer, she wanted this new professor to see that she was trying. "Professor Botros, runes are symbols that make up an ancient alphabet and was and can be used for magical purposes." She hoped that was a good enough answer.

Botros. Yep, gotta remember that name. Hopefully.
So now that the class started, Kat gave her full attention to the professor. He asked about Runes... Which is obviously the question every Rune professor has asked since forever during their first class. To answer his question... "They are the letters in the runic alphabet," she said. Cos that is, like, the definition of Runes since forever.
Good enough, I guess. Oh well.

Oh yeah, the last professor was... eaten... That was really sad... Sophie sat quietly as the class took a moment of silence and raised her eyebrows when Oakey's stomach made it clear that he, unlike the... plant, hadn't eaten anything.
Biting her lip to suppress a chuckle - how rude of her, that's true, but she couldn't help it, that sound couldn't have come in a more inappropriate moment and that was so Oakey. In a cute way, obviously. That was good, because moments of silence seemed to last longer than they were supposed to, most of times.
Aand there they went. Ancient Runes... '...mostly a theoretical one...' Uhh... Sophie's shoulders lowered at the sound of that. boring class was going to be boring. And she already had no idea what professor Botros was talking about.
Though Odin was a fun name!
Since she had absolutely no idea how to respond to his question, the Hufflepuff remained quiet as she looked around, listening to her classmates answers.
Ugh, that sounded so duullllll. She placed her elbows on the desk in front of her and rested her chin on her hands. Sigh.

It had already started. He was talking about complicated things that she didn't know. Well, at least he wasn't doing it with some accent that she couldn't understand. That would have been simply tragic. She sat back in her seat and listened as he went on about runes; what else would they talk about in this class? Oh? And now he was asking what they were. Ahem. She knew this answer. Her hand flew up and she waved it around to grab his attention so he wouldn't be able to say he didn't see her raise it first. "Those are the squibbly stuff that ancient people used to make messages because they didn't know about the alphabet as yet. I think we took it over and started using it for other stuff but I don't know that other stuff..." Just thought she'd put that out there while she was at it.

Minerva went into a deep frown when he brought up the late professor. She was trying to avoid thinking about that, especially in this class. The classroom they all last saw him. Thankfully she had left quickly at the end of that class and did not see him taken by that horrid plant. She put her head down for a moment in honoring him. He deserved that much, he was a good professor, and always so mysterious with the owls and leaving at different times.
Now time for class to start, listening she was at least glad she could understand this professor and he did seem nice. Placing her hand up Minerva tried to answer the question at the best of her ability. "Professor, runes is an alphabet that was used before the Latin alphabet was created. It had symbols for each letter." Putting her hand down, Minerva got ready to take any notes she felt needed to be taken.
McCall stifled a yawn as the class began. She very much disliked Ancient Runes. No, 'dislike' was not strong enough. She hated Ancient Runes. Her father would always try to teach her the basics of it back at home, but she was always bored out of her mind when he would talk about it. She supposed she could attempt to give it a fair shot this term. After all, she probably shouldn't be judging a class that she's never been to before.
What are runes? Sort of an easy question. She had heard enough from her father about it to know the basic definition. After raising her hand, she began to say her answer. "Basically, runes are just symbols. They are symbols that represent the different sounds of the Runic alphabet." She could go on about the Elder Futhark, but no, she didn't want to bore herself or her classmates too much on the first day of class.

Runes. Runes. Runes. Ella scribbled on her parchment and mentally went over everything she knew about the subject which...well it wasn't that much, actually. She really did think the subject was interesting but last term had been a bit...well scary and things didn't exactly work out in favor of the Runes Professor...Sad story, really. Anywhooo...hopefully Professor Botros could catch them up and manage not to get eaten or anything, that would be really nice.
What was a rune? Ella scrunched up her face and thought and tried to remember what she knew on the subject from previous terms. Well...runes were symbols, yeah? And they were used in a kind of alphabet? ...Seemed legit. Raising her hand, the blonde badger waited for her turn to speak.
"Professor, runes are letters used in an alphabet. And they...well they have meaning associated with them erm...well like sowilo and the sun."

Uggh, basic review. Alex figured he should probably be grateful for this, what with NEWTs coming up and all that and he really needed to go over that basic stuff. He cleared his throat and then raised his hands.
"Runes are an ancient form of alphabet that existed before the current alphabet we use. They not only were used to spell out words but are also used to enhance spells," he explained.

Alice LIKED the old man Professor. Botros reminded her of her own Gramps, and he was polite, too, giving the old teacher a moment of silence and honor and all. But she did not like the subject he taught, nope, runes were too confusing. What in the name of Merlin were Odin runes? Her specialty was Quidditch, that this mumbo jumbo that the man was talking about. Despite her total lack of knowledge, she decided to raise her hand anyway, for participation and whatnot. "Professor, aren't runes those squiggly things that are involved in some kind of alphabet? Some kind of German thing that's related to Latin and Roman and are magical symbols. Or something." She thought for another minute, and then added, "They look kind of like noodles to me."
THERE. That was a complete Alice answer. She was pleased.

Definitely a social one this Hufflepuff. Abraham smiled at him, cautiously because it was the social popular ones who usually caused his head to boom. "Hello, young boy. I'm going fine, thank you." Fortunately the class didn't erupt into a chant of 'I'm fine' when the Hufflepuff addressed ALL class.
... oh look. "Don't touch the pile. The instructions on the board are clear." Ab's voice boomed in the silent room, his eyes sternly looking at the boy. Disobeying rules in the first five minutes through school year was definitely not a good impression on your teachers. wait at least a couple of days

Dylan smiled and nodded as the professor said that he was fine, not that he was interested in how the oldie was but its cool that he wanted to offer up how he was. "Thats cool professor" he said to the professor.
Just then the professor made him jump as he yelled out at Dylan across the classroom, he looked at the professor a little scared with his heart going boom boom in his chest. He looked at those eyes just looking at him *gulp* He just looked at the professor and kept his hands to himself, phew! well at least he didnt lose any points for wanting to touching that pile.
He listened as their professor went onto talk about some magic runes or something, he wasnt really listening.. since his ears were still ringing from being yelled at not moments ago. He then composed himself and he wasnt going to take that no way! He was going to show the professor that he wasnt going to take being yelled at like that!
He exhaled and calmed himself down and he heard the professor asking them what runes were. "A bunch of old letters or something" he said a little more bluntly than he had planned to since he was not pleased at being yelled at. His parents could yell at him like that but he was not too pleased about his professors yelling that loud at him, he was on his list to be pranked on. He just had to choose a good one for this professor.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Thank you, Prefect? Prefect?!
Daichi looked at the Professor with a slight frown on his face. He wondered why the man hadn't called him by his name when he remembered that he never truly introduced himself.
Well... At least the old man's eyes were still good cause he had seen him wearing a badge. Anyways, on to the question!
Despite that Ancient Runes was probably Daichi's worst subject ever, he wasn't that dumb that he didn't know the basics....
The Slytherin raised his arm in the air and waved his hand to get the old man's attention. "Professor Bo..."what was his name again?!.... Bomos? ...bofos?
"Botox!" yeah that sounded about right~ "Rune means letter or script but it can also mean secret" why? He had no idea!

Zarifa raised her hand "Erm, Professor.... I think it means mostly theoretical subject that studies the ancient runic scripts of magic." she said quietly while taking down her hand,
Taylor raised her hand, "Professors, runes are symbols and the word rune means letter... I think..." She blushed and sighed. Tay felt so stupid right now that it wasnt funny.
Eh, runes, what are they? Stupid, annoying, rediculous, not saying those things out loud. Might as well answer the question properly and make the best of this class. Oichi raised her hand, "Runes are codes that represent something, sometimes something magical.".

....
One moment was done. He raised his head slowly and continued, "This subject, as you all will see, is mostly a theoretical one which tends to give the wrong impression on most scholars" Tsk tsk tsk, shame. "Together we'll try to take small gradual steps in order to understand the sacred runes of Odin - Runic magic, in particular." They were wizards and witches afterall. So no, they were not about to learn how to write in runes. That was too boring.
He moved to the side and waved his wand at the blackboard, removing the earlier instruction. "Runes of Odin, runic magic, runic inscriptions. I keep repeating the word rune. Who knows what are runes? Or what does the word rune mean literally?" Positioning himself on the middle of his desk, he leaned on it and waited. "Raise your hand first, please."
Okay, well...this was it. Sierra's seventh and final year of Ancient Runes. Right after the class took a moment of silence for the dearly departed, Sierra took her own moment of silence to acknowledge the fact that she'd already survived six years of this dreadful subject. Blast the day her mother decided the Minister's daughter should be well-rounded and take every class out there.
She raised her hand at the sound of the first questions. "Runes are an alphabet that we can use for things like communication through writing, divination, and of course magic," she said. "There's certain symbols we use for each part of the alphabet, and we call the symbols runes, too."
...and this guy was pretty old, wasn't he? He wasn't going to drop dead on them or anything, was he? ...because that had happened before. Twice.
Nigel was beginning to like this new Ancient Rune Professor. Nigel was reminded of a certain butler for his favorite super hero. But he would lay off judgement since it was only the first class. Nigel did wondered if he would ever fall asleep in the middle of class. Like he had narcolepsy or something. Now that would be funny.
Now what was the exact definition of a rune? Nigel had no idea. But he did know what a rune was and he could start there.
"Professor, Runes are letters in an alphabet and were used in Germanic Languages."

ooc: - You don't have to give a completely correct answer, just let your character reply according to their year/knowledge/personality. ^.^
- Do not edit your answer after you posted it.
- Class will resume in 12 hours.
Runes, hmm? Which were entirely different things from ruins, thank you, and also were probably not German, although he wasn't 100% sure and didn't bother correcting his classmates. Mo was pretty sure they were from somewhere north. Norway or Iceland or the North Pole. Somewhere really cold.
After his classmates had answered, Mo's hand shot up in the air, and he wiggled around in his seat for a moment. "So... so like it's an alphabet, right? Which means that it spells words and people used to use it to write, only no one speaks in those languages anymore, so you'd think it would be a dead language like Latin. Except that, like Latin, we still make use of Runes to do really awesome things. But not just swapping letter for letter, because it wasn't like those ol' Rune-speaking people used English spelling or anything. But you can use runes for Divination and like... charms and things." FYI.

Anya busied herself with her name card thing. In fact, she barely noticed a question being asked. What were runes...? ... that was the question, right?
