Hecate stood in the middle of the classroom. She seemed more pleasant than usual... for one thing she was no longer dying. She was cured, and she looked the picture of health... well... unless you count the streak of gray in her hair, and the one gray eye... You didn't really notice the eye unless you were close to her, and not many students would dare get close enough to see... except maybe...

She'd hex the hufflepuff who did...
She opened the door to the classroom and sat behind the desk.

Noxious... OBnoxious? That is what she thought of when she heard the word. And it certainly suited most of the people in this room... but her hand went up politely and she said, "Noxious means the substance or fumes, or whatever you are dealing with, are dangerous to your health. Like noxious gas for instance. These things can prove to deadly even."
Lowering her hand she looked over to Tom and smiled sweetly at him. He had a pretty awesome accent.
"I'm here." Which meant pretty good... "Good day Miss Hyde, I trust you are a real witch now? Wand and all?"
"Alright class... I'm feeling very well, and that means I can also get quite angry with you if you misbehave." She glared at the quidditch players. "That said, consider yourselves warned. Let's start. Who can tell me what the definition of the word noxious is?"
Laura smiled at the Professor. "Yeah I have a new wand." Laura showed the Professor her new wand and then she listened to the Professor as she spoke. "I think that it means hazardous or something like that." Laura had no idea if it was right or not but it was worth a guess.

Milton had noticed that grey streak in her hair at the feast, but he couldn't tell if it was intentional or not. But if it was some potion gone wrong, well... Pff. Lafay didn't make mistakes when it came to potions. It was probably intentional. Plus, wasn't that like, fashionable or something? Sure, whatever.
Sitting near the back, Milton quietly listened to her ask the first question. Noxious... Sounded like obnoxious, but it wasn't. "It's like... bad. Dangerous." Stuff like that.

Scary lesson was going to be scary, right?
... Onto the lesson. Alec blinked at the Professor and frowned a little at the word 'noxious'. Noxious... Noxious... it sounded familiar. Was it like the spell 'nox'? The opposite of 'lumos'? That one that got rid of the light at the end of your wand?
... Probably not.
So noxious. "Erm... Professor?" he said, raising his hand, "Erm... I think it's bad? Not great? Like... if a gas was said to be noxious, you probably wouldn't want to breathe it in because... because it would cause dangerous effects to your body." Yeah. That's all he had for now.

Well, she was definitely back at the Hogwarts Potion class. She remembered immediately how fierce Professor Lafay could get. And honestly... she had missed it.
Noxious. Well, her heart jumped in her chest! If Professor Lafay was asking about the definition of noxious was, hopefully that means she would be making something noxious. An evil smile erupted somewhere inside.
Zhenya raised her hand, "Professor, noxious is defined as harmful or poisonous." She kept it at that; what she knew.

Alice offered a smile to her Mama Selina when she entered, and beamed at Mo when he came and sat by her. She would have struck up a conversation with them both, and she DEFINITELY would have commented on that little exchange between the Head Girl and Dylan. That deserved eyebrow wiggling, especially after that comment from Lafay on their flirtatiousness, didn't it? But the professor had started class already, so she figured there was no point.
Noxious? Like.. like OBnoxious? You know what was obnoxious, or WHO? Mean people. Ones who were dangerous and mean and rude and mean and evil and mean. So did noxious mean that, too? Probably not. But loads of others were saying things along the lines of harmful, so Alice decided to go with that part of her theory as her hand flew up. "Dangerous. Icky. Nasty, professor." Yes? No? Was that right?

Lafay was alive! It was bad enough that Professor Burbage got sacked and she couldn't care less about Runes Guy, not to mention Shiny Ground's Keeper deciding to NOT come back. Losing Lafay would have just been awful!
After greeting the Professor and settling down a bit she fixed her eyes on her cauldron, already trying to figure out what potion they'd be learning. Last year's potions were pretty boss and she found good use for most of them. Maybe this year it'd even be something that could personally benefit her seeing as trying that whole 'brew on your own' thing wasn't working out.
Her attention was drawn back to the class by the Professor's question.
Noxious?
It didn't sound familiar.
"Does it have anything to do with poisons?" Most dangerous things had a kinda thing where they rhymed with that word or looked close to it--They'd be learning about poisons???

Nell grinned at Professor Lafay and her usual tough self. She liked the Professor and her no nonsense attitude. She was already out of the gate and into the lesson. Ethan hadn't answered her but she had sat down next to him anyway.

Hah...he barely had started it. If his girlfriend had not decided to be so...annoying today, he could show the woman what real flirting was but all his mood for flirting was gone now for obvious reasons. Instead of Aurora, he turned to Peyton and focused his attention on her. The sugar quill looked sweet, a nice snack to enjoy as he was listening to the professor. He smiled at the younger Slytherin red head's words. Yeah, why would not she? She had no reason not to care about his feelings so he had no idea what Aurora had in mind to do that.
He was about to bite the sweet tip of the sugar quill when all in a sudden...

...everything went cold and wet. ''What the...?!'' he started but fell silent when he realized that it was no one but the Potions Mistress. He was all soaked now. Everything he had was soaked too. A part of his bag, the parchment on the desk, his quill and the...the sugar quill was gone. Merlin! He was cold. As he sat there, cold and wet, it was hard not to protest. In order to avoid saying something wrong to the professor, he looked at Aurora hoping to find comfort with her but...Good Merlin! It surely did not look like she cared about it at all.
He was upset...angry...annoyed...a mixture of them all. Could he please now leave this class?
He did not know if he could and he was not sure if he could ask without being hexed or something. So, for now, he instead just sat there, we and cold, and glared at the professor not bothering about the question she asked.

Professor was feeling well but could still get angry? That seemed to go against the rules of being well. Happy is happy and sad is sad and there was no middle ground. That was how it worked, right? Or had she missed something when learning about emotions. SHRUG. She wasn't going to misbehave anyway, so she didn't really have anything to worry about. Did she?
The definition of the word noxious.
Point number one, noxious was a very cool word. Point number two would be made AFTER to stuck her hand in the air. Hm. "It generally means harmful or poisonous. Like, noxious gases are dangerous and can knock people out or sometimes even kill them, depending on how noxious they are." Or something along those lines. Noxious could be used in many different contexts and stuff though. The first bit seemed right to her though.
She was very glad to see Professor Lafay looking well. It was new for her to see actually, since she had first met Lafay as a first year when the woman had been gravely ill, so this was a very pleasant surprise. She smiled a little despite how unfeeling her professor was trying to seem. And she knew better than to stare, that much she had learned last year. She did make a mental note about the grey streak in her hair though. It was pretty and made Eliza want to do something more interesting with her own hair. I wonder if anyone knows any spells that can change my hair to a different color...
But back to the lesson. Noxious? Makes me think of noxious fume warnings, so... She raised her hand to make her reply, "Professor, I agree that noxious means something is harmful or toxic." She also knew better than to use that moment of speaking time to express how glad she was that Professor Lafay looked so bright eyed and bushy tailed, so she kept it to herself for now.
I hope this isn't an indicator that we're going to be brewing toxic things. She opened her notebook to set up for extensive note taking. Though she does seem to have a fondness for poisonous ingredients, she thought to herself with a small shudder.

Minerva had been sitting next to her cousin trying to get focused and motivated for class. She wasn't in the best mood and wasn't sure why. Listening to everyone and then hearing Professor Lafay say about people could get into trouble she couldn't help but smile. That had to mean Professor Lafay was feeling better this term, which was a good thing. She sat up a bit to try to focus more.
Placing her hand up in the air she tried to answer the best she could, "Professor, Noxious means harmful or poisonous." Putting her hand back down she worried a bit that they could be making something dangerous today. It seemed fun, but with her first year cousin in the same class she didn't want her getting hurt.
Belle was glad the professor was feeling better. Then she chuckled when she said she can get angry if anyone misbehaved. Then she asked a question. What is Noxious? Belle heard of Noxious gas before. Then it clicked...
As Belle raised her hand, she answered the question, "Professor i know Noxious means harmful."
Nigel thought about the question and thought she was talking about another word that sounded similar. But after hearing in again. He knew she was talking about another word. Noxious. Well with that word in mind Nigel raised his hand.
"It means harmful or poisonous."
Nigel wondered if they were doing some poisonous potions today.

YAY!!! They were learning about a deadly potion today!! Great!! That just gave Nate the best prank idea in the world...though it would probably get him expelled or sent to azkaban, but oh well. Nate obviously knew what noxious meant. Though some other answers he had heard were...interesting. Nate raised his hand in the most confident, yet cocky way and said "Noxious means something that is harmful and deadly. Anything that is noxious should not be ingested because it can kill someone." Yep that sounded correct to Nate. It was so hard for him to hold in his evil snickering after he said that. It almost made him die.
Kaiden shifted a bit in his seat. Yeah, Lafay, she was scary, even if he didn't remeber being that scared of her when he was first here. But most professors didn't usually talk about being angry and stuff. Noxious? the boy thought about that for a bit. What did that mean? Raising his hand he offered, "Doesn't it mean something that causes you to vomit because it smells and just stinks really bad?"

Momma Snake was feeling 'very well'. Kat was totally happy and relieved about it. And she was worrying that Lafay might not even return this term. Scary. Anyway... wait, why was she glaring at her. At them. Quidditch players. But... they didn't do anything wrong.

Alyssa listened as everyone gave their answers as to the definition if noxious. Her answer was basically going to be the same but she raised her hand anyway and gave her answer.
"Professor, noxious basically means something that is unpleasant to smell or breathe in. Most of the time it is harmful and deadly to the person who is breathing in the fumes."

Peyton just sat there, sort of wanting to pout, but at the same time trying to come off as strong. Had she been with her family she'd thrown a fit, maybe cried a little, until it was fixed. But, not here. She couldn't cry 'cause she was thirteen, man.
She sighed and focused on what Lafay was saying. She'd ordered that Sugar Quill days ahead just for Richard. >.< Anyway, she raised her hand and said, "Noxious is something poisonous or unpleasant."

Noxious? Like.. like OBnoxious? You know what was obnoxious, or WHO? Mean people. Ones who were dangerous and mean and rude and mean and evil and mean. So did noxious mean that, too? Probably not. But loads of others were saying things along the lines of harmful, so Alice decided to go with that part of her theory as her hand flew up. "Dangerous. Icky. Nasty, professor." Yes? No? Was that right?

After greeting the Professor and settling down a bit she fixed her eyes on her cauldron, already trying to figure out what potion they'd be learning. Last year's potions were pretty boss and she found good use for most of them. Maybe this year it'd even be something that could personally benefit her seeing as trying that whole 'brew on your own' thing wasn't working out.

It didn't sound familiar.
"Does it have anything to do with poisons?" Most dangerous things had a kinda thing where they rhymed with that word or looked close to it--They'd be learning about poisons???

...everything went cold and wet. ''What the...?!'' he started but fell silent when he realized that it was no one but the Potions Mistress. He was all soaked now. Everything he had was soaked too. A part of his bag, the parchment on the desk, his quill and the...the sugar quill was gone. Merlin! He was cold. As he sat there, cold and wet, it was hard not to protest. In order to avoid saying something wrong to the professor, he looked at Aurora hoping to find comfort with her but...Good Merlin! It surely did not look like she cared about it at all.
He was upset...angry...annoyed...a mixture of them all. Could he please now leave this class?
He did not know if he could and he was not sure if he could ask without being hexed or something. So, for now, he instead just sat there, we and cold, and glared at the professor not bothering about the question she asked.
"Turner, if you do want to answer... you may leave my classroom." She said in all seriousness. If the boy was going to pout, she didn't need him.

Professor was feeling well but could still get angry? That seemed to go against the rules of being well. Happy is happy and sad is sad and there was no middle ground. That was how it worked, right? The definition of the word noxious.
Point number one, noxious was a very cool word. Point number two would be made AFTER to stuck her hand in the air. Hm. "It generally means harmful or poisonous. Like, noxious gases are dangerous and can knock people out or sometimes even kill them, depending on how noxious they are." Or something along those lines. Noxious could be used in many different contexts and stuff though. The first bit seemed right to her though.

Ellura had heard the first question as Professor Lafay started class after returning everyone's greetings. Noxious...there were a few things that came to mind. However before she could really speak to answer, her fellow classmates were already speaking up to supply their own thoughts. So in the end, the third year remained quiet...for now. And when they moved on, she finally raised her hand to supply an educated guess to the latest question.
"I'm not familiar with the potion, Professor," she admitted seeing as she wasn't really familiar with many potions. "But perhaps its supposed to make one sick or believe that whatever the person smells is noxious-smelling." Sounded like a good as guess as any.
Noxious Potion? Did it release odors that made you pass out? Mika wondered as she had quietly sat there sitting next to her good friend Kaiden. Listening to his answers she just raised an eyebrow wondering what the Noxious potion could do.
Raising her hand she waited to be called on.
"Um Professor the Noxious Potion is a green potion that releases green puffs of smoke" Mika asked the look of wonder playing over her eyes.
She really wanted to know more about the potion but she guessed she'd give some more students the time to answer about it.

Ella wasn't very familiar with the Noxious potion but she did know some things about the word. That meant she could hazard a guess, yeah? At least she wouldn't be too far off is she stuck to what she knew. Besides, class was just plain boring when no one spoke up.
Raising her hand, the blonde waited to be called on. "Professor, I've only heard the word noxious in relation to gases or fumes so perhaps the potion gives off noxious fumes?" In which case, would they be wearing masks or anything while brewing it?

So it could be a poison...but just not necessarily. This just meant it could have been interesting...but not necessarily. Hmmmm...
After hearing all those guesses and the Professor's response, she thought she'd take a guess at the potion they'd be brewing. Could be poisonous, harmful, gross...
"Is it something used to knock people out?...like when someone's trying to get in the way of something you'd slip them some then move on with life like in those muggle movies?" They wouldn't be dead but they wouldn't be meddling either...

There was a Noxious Potion? That sounded...interesting. And probably a bit dangerous, at least considering some of the definitions people were giving for that word. Hmm. Penelope wasn't at all familiar with the potion or anything about it, but she supposed she could guess at some things. So her hand went up. "I guess it could make the person who drinks it sick? Or it could be put into something, like food, and then it would make the food make the person who eats it sick?" Maybe it was worse if taken directly though? Eh, she didn't know. Just throwing out guesses here.

Hmm. Mo had heard of Noxious Potion, although only in passing. It seemed impossible to believe it was a poison, considering that poisons all had names of their own. Noxious was just... so broad a term. Too broad. Maybe all poisons fell under that category name, only the professor hadn't said it like that. Mo propped his chin on his fist and stared at the professor with unwavering green eyes as he thought.
Okay, maybe... he raised his hand. "Professor, it doesn't sound like it would be a poison based on the naming conventions we see for poisons. So either it's a non-poisonous potion that maybe smells really bad or is otherwise really offensive to the senses, or maybe it's a potion that can be used to identify poisonous things?" Like an indicator of sorts. That would be useful, right?
