There was a crisp, cool breeze outside, indicating that the holidays weren't too far away now. The leaves blow across the ground, racing you down to the greenhouses where Professor Bentley is waiting in Greenhouse Three.
Inside, Professor Bentley is standing beside two long rows of puffapod plants, each with pods bursting with seeds, just waiting to be harvested. Most of the students would recognise them from the previous year ... how time has flown! Stools are arranged along the perimeter of the raised flower bed, waiting for the students to be seated.
OOC: THE LESSON HAS STARTED, DO NOT ARRIVE LATE--JUST PRETEND YOU WERE HERE THE WHOLE TIME. If you haven't done so already then please read through the Herbology Rules and Expectations and the SS Site Rules. All SS Board Rules apply. Taking a deep breath, Alyssa made sure that her dragon hide gloves were securely on her hands. She took a scrunchie out of her pocket and tied back her hair to keep it out of her way. Plus she didn't want the branches to get entangled in them. Once she had finished that, she pulled down her robe sleeves as far down her hands as she could to protect her arms from the spiny branches she would be encountering.
"Okay here goes."Alyssa told Ella. She got as close to the Snargaluff plant as she could. She hoped that it was asleep but knew that that wasn't the case, because it immediately lashed out with its spiky vines once she raised her hands toward it. Alyssa ducked the first spiky branch that was headed for her face. She ducked the second one, when it went for her neck, but couldn't duck the third one that seemed to know which direction she was going and went in that direction. It hit her on the cheek. "Ouch! now that was not nice of you. You should not have done that. I was going to be nice too. But I guess you don't want to play nice. ." Alyssa told the Snargaluff.
She reached out with both her hands and grabbed as many vines as she could with one hand, and then once she had a hold of one lot, reached out and grabbed the other set of vines with her right. She managedto keep her face as far away from the branches, but wasn't able to protect her arms that were getting scratched. But she would deal with them later. Right now she was determined to win this battle.
Now that she held all the vines in both her hands, she tied them together. Twisting them around each other, one on top of the other and then tied them up into one big knot. As she held the knotted bunch in her hand, she saw an opening in between the branches.
She yelled out to Ella."I see the opening. Can you? Don't worry. I have a firm grip on the vines for now, but act fast, they are still struggling to get loose and I don't know how long I can hold onto them."
Ella nodded nervously. "Ready as I'll ever be." *Gulp* She really wanted to wait for this third girl but Alyssa seemed confident enough to start without her and that was good enough for Ella. She paced as she watched Alyssa head towards the plant, hoping that she was faster than the vines were because they looked angry...was it even possible for vines to look that way?
Ella flinched, wide eyed as she watched the scene before her. Alyssa was going for the vines with intensity but they weren't going quietly though, lashing at Alyssa who took a blow to the cheek. "Merlin's Beard! Be careful!" Ella yelled, feeling her stomach fall a little. Ella was growing more nervous by the second, looking around and wondering where this Beatrice girl was! She had full confidence in Alyssa but she looked like she could use a hand.
Suddenly, Alyssa had managed to get hold of the vines and knot them, allowing Ella the chance to run forward and do her job. What was she saying to her? The hole, right. Looking for the hole, Ella nodded. "Yes! I see it now." She mentally scolded herself, Be brave Ella, you're not going to die in herbology.Looking down she did a quick check to make sure her gloves were pulled up and her sleeves pulled down. Everything seemed to be in order so there was really no more reason for stalling. She hurried forward biting her lip, inching towards the hole when-

"I'm like the lost third member, am I?" Beezus inquired jokingly. Although she knew it wasn't the time to joke around for Lyssie had pounced in on the Snargaluff's vines. "Oi. Be careful!" she called out to the badger. But oh! And EEEP! The girl was still hit by the vines. With a few more minutes of bantering with the vines though, the girl managed to get them all together. Beezus got ready with her wand as Lyssie then instructed the other girl which name was Ella to shove her hand into the hole.
'Come on, get the pod," Beezus hoped mentally when the girl brewed closer. "Wait!" she quickly called out. "Lyssie, let go first!" the eaglette told her friend for she saw one of the vines slip from the girl's arms and was now moving tenaciously around. "Get down you two!"
Ella saw the third member of their team approach and felt immediately better. Three heads were definitely better than one for this task. She was about to go for the pod, arm ready to take the plunge when she heard "get down!" She acted before thinking and luckily wasn't struck by the vine. She looked around to see if Alyssa and Beatrice were okay. "Alright, quick, grab the vine and I'll grab the pod!" Ella was on high alert, with one of the vines loose she was not safe standing so close to the plant. She held her arms ready in case she needed to change jobs and grab on to the flying weapon that was currently whipping around them.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Well well well, if it wasn't the Puff from an earlier class. Daichi couldn't help but grin a little bit when he saw him waving at him and he waved back before walking towards him.

She should have seen this coming. Poor Oakey, it wasn't surprising that he was still traumatised by the memory of that Blunt boy. Darn good at quidditch he was... but very strange and dangerous at the same time. Possibly even more dangerous than the Snargaluff itself. Maybe?
Well, she'd just have to make sure he walked out alive, Kurumi looked as if she would keep a close eye on him as well.
"Nope... it would make extraction near impossible."
"Yep, team work helps... always better to have an extra set of hands." ... in case you lost one?
"Good in theory, but no I'm afraid that wouldn't work." Some things were best done the hard way.

What was a Snargaluff? ... Oh sweet mother of Merlin! ... she'd forgotten that some students weren't of wizarding heritage.. either that or just never bothered to open a text book.
"Snargaluffs are flesh eating plants, often considered herbs, though they more closely resemble trees," she said indicating one of the two gnarled stumps which stood a few feet away. "They're inactive now, but once you get close they will attack with their vines... just becareful of the thorns." .. and it's mouth, of course.
"No.. summoning charms are not very effective when it comes to extracting or harvesting seeds or pods."
Besides, that would spoil all the fun!
"Very good Sierra, team work is always best.. you could attempt to do it yourself but that's best left to a professional." And maybe once you're older and bigger, that way you're harder to swallow. Mmhhmm.
"Freezing or stunning them won't work, they need to be active in order for us to gain access to the pods." A very good question by the Snake.
"Yep... more or less."
Seren smiled brightly, it was as easy as picking it up, though that was really the end result.
"Nope... no spells on this one."
"The stunning charm is frequently used when dealing with Snargaluffs, but not when extracting pods..."
Another wand-happy student. Merlin!
"Interesting thought, but no... nothing overly special, unless you think your hand and arm is particularly special?"
... why did they all just want to stun the poor Snargy?

"Nope, no stunning." .. the plants were already stunning enough.

"Yes, very good Alyssa," she replied with a nod. Though it appears the girl hadn't finished speaking...
"It's a good thought, but remember the numbing charm is effect on small plants only... it would be useless against a Snargaluff."
Time to set a few things straight...
"Nobody is to use their wand against a Snargaluff unless absolutely necessary... once you have extracted a pod, and your team mate has moved away, ONLY THEN may you stun the Snargaluff so that you may get to a safe distance." ... the last thing she needed was a bunch of stunning spells being shot around the greenhouse. That would be disastrous.
"I assure you the Snargaluff is more afraid of you than you are of it," this, she thought was true, though others wouldn't think so. "You have your wands merely for precaution, nobody is going to get eaten today, not on my watch. You will all leave here with your limbs in tact." This was both a promise and a guarantee.
"Now for the last activity, I want you all to form groups of either two or three, no less and no more."
"Once you have formed your group, you will need to wait your turn to extract a pod from a Snargaluff... owing to the fact that we only have two, you will need to be patient."
Seren cast a glance backwards at the two stumps one on each side of the greenhouse, just a few feet away from them.
"You will need to discuss who will be holding the vines.. I suggest tying them in a knot if you can, it'll make your task easier, and then the person who is going to plunge their arm into the hole, which, when active, will appear between the branches." And seeing as they were stumps, there really weren't many branches to worry about, just the one of two stumpy looking ones.
"The pods are the size of a grapefruit, they're usually a shade of green or yellow and have fine spiky hairs on them, once your group has successfully extracted a pod, you may come and hand it in to me and then head back up to the castle. Homework will be posted on your notice boards in due time."
Right... was there anything she'd forgotten?

"Gloves! if you're not wearing them, put them on now!" Or risk losing a hand or getting thorns in them.

Harvey listened to the professor respond to their answers and was surprised at how many people thought that stunning the plant was the way to go. Even thought the professor was saying no to all of them, in total no spells were to be cast on it until AFTER you had retrieved the pod. He then listened to the professor as she explained what they should be doing, ok so in groups of 2 or 3.. he then heard that they would have to stick their hand in there to retrieve the pod.. his eyes went wide.. stick his hand IN THERE?! Was the professor ok?! Since he had started at this school 1 year ago.. he had never stuck his hand in anything until the plant was frozen or stunned or something.. and here she was expecting them to stick their hand in without doing all of that. She then explained what the pod looked like and what to do after that.. she then told them to go get into their groups oh and to put their gloves on which Harvey did as quickly as he could. He was about to look for someone when someone called him.

Jory grinned at his new Slytherin friend. "I think I'll tackle the vines,'' Jory said eying the Snargaluff.
"Ready?'' he asked Daichi, as he pulled on his gloves. Jory glanced around the Greenhouse. Student were rather having a hard time getting the pods.
Ryan looked around.He really needed to find a partner to get to work with.''Anyone want to be my partner.''He said looking around hoping ot find someone .
Messer listened as the Professor explained to them how to extract the snargaluff. Okay now he need to find a partner. The young badger looked around the classroom to look for someone with no partner. Then he noticed a Gryffindor boy who was looking for a pertner. "Me. Me. Me." he said raising his hand up to the air hoping that he catch the boy attention.

But the plant was too fast for him. It dodged out of reach of his hands and made way for his face instead. Jory saw the vines just in time and he jumped out of the way. The vines missed him by an inch.
Trying to reach the vines again, Jory made another grab for the plant which dodged to the right but Jory changed direction and managed to grab a handful of the vines at the left side.
''Daichi! See if you can manage to get any pods!" Jory hurriedly told the Slythie.

Yes, someone wanted to be her partner! Especialy another Slytherin, Olivia grinned at the girls glum responce "Sure! Im Olivia. Nice to meet you" she held out her hand to shake. Olivia still had to introduce herself even though she was pretty sure the girl was in the same year as her. "You seem tired"Olivia thought this overused expression would be a good one to use.

Daichi gasp as he saw how Jory was trying to grab the vines of the snargaluff but it had dodged his hands. He wanted to shout a Watch Out! but it seemed that the third year had seen the attacking vines that tried to hit his face and he let out a breath of relief.
The Slytherin waited, focused on his cue. His thumbs were brushing against each other when Jory dove for the vines again.
His cue! this was his cue! Daichi couldn't take a breath to calm himself since he did not know how long the other boy could hold the vines. He bravely moved forward towards the Snargaluff and held his arms out. Hole.hole...where was it? "I can't find it!" he shouted as he searched. "More vines are covering up the hole..wait i'll gra--" he couln't finish his sentence for the vines on the right, that had finally noticed Daichi's presence, he had wanted to grab avoided his hands and started to attack him.
Daichi jumped away from the Snargaluff and took a deep breath when out of reach. He looked up at the Hufflepuff still holding the vines, unaware that he had a tiny cut on his left cheek. "Wait, let me try again!"

It is crucial that you pay attention to what you are doing, before we go in, remember those ground rules, don't wander around or touch anything that you shouldn't... I keep this greenhouse locked for a reason."
Speaking of which, she should probably UNlock it now. Fumbling a little with her collection of keys, Seren finally managed to unlock two of the locks, she then lifted a protective charm from the door as well, whispering the counter spell under her breath.
"Now file in neatly and quietly please, we don't want to startle anything."
As she opened the door, a stretch of empty space could be seen just inside. A safe haven perhaps? a distance away from this space were two gnarled stumps. They looked safe and harmless, but they were deceptive for sure.
Once the students had assembled into a nice cosy group in front of her, she closed the door--unlocked-- and turned back to the class. "Can anybody tell me HOW we extract Snargaluff pods?" she asked pointing over at the stumps.
Tayla went inside the greenhouse with the other students. There was an excited feeling in her stomach as she anticipated what was coming.
"Snargaluff pods?" Tayla thought to herself as she looked at the stumps Professor Bentley was pointing at. They didn't look scary at all so she began to wonder why the greenhouse was kept locked. Not as talented at Herbology as she wished, Tayla remained silent and listened to her classmates' answers.

Tayla went inside the greenhouse with the other students. There was an excited feeling in her stomach as she anticipated what was coming.
"Snargaluff pods?" Tayla thought to herself as she looked at the stumps Professor Bentley was pointing at. They didn't look scary at all so she began to wonder why the greenhouse was kept locked. Not as talented at Herbology as she wished, Tayla remained silent and listened to her classmates' answers.
Tayla listened carefully to Professor Bentley then looked around. It seemed like most of her classmates had already chosen partners or group mates. "Er..." she began with a slight blush. "Anyone need a partner? Or a third group member?" She hoped someone would say they did.
Silvia looked around, many students already had groups and were starting on the task. She probably needed to speak up a bit and ask someone, rather than waiting for someone to come to her. She turned around when she heard another student say that she still needed a partner. "Um, I still need a partner, if you want to work together," she said a bit timidly.

Seren cast a glance backwards at the two stumps one on each side of the greenhouse, just a few feet away from them.
"You will need to discuss who will be holding the vines.. I suggest tying them in a knot if you can, it'll make your task easier, and then the person who is going to plunge their arm into the hole, which, when active, will appear between the branches." And seeing as they were stumps, there really weren't many branches to worry about, just the one of two stumpy looking ones.
"The pods are the size of a grapefruit, they're usually a shade of green or yellow and have fine spiky hairs on them, once your group has successfully extracted a pod, you may come and hand it in to me and then head back up to the castle. Homework will be posted on your notice boards in due time."

Zhenya stood there, looking around. Was anyone NOT taken? She had seen everyone run towards each other, but she wasn't, so she was here; last one to be partnered. Or was she?

With a few more minutes of bantering with the vines though, the girl managed to get them all together. Beezus got ready with her wand as Lyssie then instructed the other girl which name was Ella to shove her hand into the hole.
'Come on, get the pod," Beezus hoped mentally when the girl brewed closer. "Wait!" she quickly called out. "Lyssie, let go first!" the eaglette told her friend for she saw one of the vines slip from the girl's arms and was now moving tenaciously around. "Get down you two!"
"Guys I'm losing my grip. I'm going to have let go. Everybody back away, NOW!!" Alyssa called out as she felt the vines slipping through her grip. She backed up as fast as she could but not fast enough to avoid one vicious spiky vine that smacked her across the cheek again. This one really stang and when she touched her face with her glove and looked at it, it was stained with her blood.
"Looks like I'm going to need some of the Dittany potion that my grandmother gave me this year" she told her team mates. Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out a vial, looked at the label, before removing it's cap and drinking from it. The healing potion immediately began to take effect and the pain stopped. She hoped that she wouldn't have any permanent scarring.
"Could we take a breather before I grab them again? We may need two of us to hold onto the vines. Ella were you able to grab any pods at all? " Alyssa asked the younger Hufflepuff.
Sophie finally managed to release her hair from the vine and stepped back a little to catch her breath. That was harder than she thought! She looked up at Amelia and gave her a little grin. "I'll try that again! Be ready to try and get the pod as fast as you can if I'm able to hold the thingies for a little while, okay?"
She stared at the Snargaluff again and took a deep breath, concentrating more. Walking directly to it, without taking her eyes off the plant, Sophie reached once again for the moving vines. She held them with all of her strength this time and ducked a couple of times to avoid some other vines that were coming her way. She tied the ones she was holding in a knot and held them with one hand with all her might. Her other hand was now moving around to grab some other vines to clear the way to Amelia. "That is... haard!" She said, avoiding one vine after the other. "Come here, you... thing...!" She held another vine and pulled it together to the knot she was still holding. She bent over the vines on her hand, almost as if she was hugging them. "Do you think... you can get the... pod now, Amelia??" Sophie asked, struggling to keep holding the vines.

Ella adjusted her grip on the pod she had felt and was pulling when she heard Alyssa instructing her to get away. She gave the pod one hard jerk and suddenly found herself on the ground, pod in hand. She frowned at Alyssa who was now bleeding. "That doesn't look so good, Alyssa. Does it hurt?" She was relieved to find out Alyssa had something she could take for it.
Had she gotten any pods after all of that? Ella held up the greenish grapefruit shaped thing with a look of disgust. She was surprised to see she too had a little gash along her arm, probably from when she ripped her arm out of the hole. She stood, holding it out for the others to look at. "Did we need to get more than one?" She asked, hoping the answer was no. She was also going to ask about stunning the crazy plant but as they were all a safe distance away now, it didn't seem necessary.

Lily nodded as the professor explained what a snargaluff plant was. But then the class was moving on. Groups of three.. Lily thought as she looked around and spotted Angelina. "Hey Angelina, want to be partners? And maybe if Taylor is around we can all be a group..." Lily wasn't sure whether she was ready to trust someone new with a dangerous plant like this, so she wanted to make sure she had her friends close by. "Did you want me to hold the vines?" Lily asked, thinking that she would rather do that than stick her hand into a hole in a plant that she had never even heard of. She made sure her gloves were on and her wand ready in case of emergency, while she waited for their turn at the plant.

"I'm Silvia Talbot, first year Ravenclaw. Nice to meet you." Several students were already engaging with the snargaluff. She pulled at her gloves to make sure they were on all the way and secure. She let go of the vines and tried to untangle her hair. "Get off my hair, Snargaluff! Get oooooff!"
"Nice to meet you too!" Amelia said before they started to get down to the business at hand. It seemed that Sophie wanted to hold the branches, and Amelia had no problem with that, because she figured that either job would be rather sucky. And if Sophie had any trouble with it she would gladly switch places and see if that worked out better.
Making sure that her gloves were on securely, she watched as Sophie tried to grab on to the Snargaluff... and ouch. She winced a little. "Want me to try to do it if you can't manage?" she offered as she went to help the girl untangle her hair. It might be easier for her.
