Herbology Lesson One
It was such a nice day outside, the weather was mild, not quite warm but not cold either. Just the way Seren liked it. Unfortunately the lesson wasn’t being held outdoors, no, it was being held in Greenhouse One, where the air was cooler, and the smell of damp soil filled the air.
As you enter the greenhouse the first thing you notice are the stools arranged to the side of the greenhouse by the door, and directly opposite these are stools of a different variety. That’s right, toadstools! While they may look harmless from a distance it’s not wise to get too close to them just yet, after all you wouldn’t want to be sent to the Hospital Wing before the lesson has even started.
Waiting patiently for the students to arrive, Professor Bentley stood by the door to welcome them as they entered; Though she was careful to position herself near the seating area so that she can keep an eye on any mischief making. Standing slightly to the side of the toadstools, was Professor Bentley’s old blackboard, neat and tidy cursive writing slowly appearing on its surface- as if by magic!

The next step on the board apparently was telling Ariella to yank out the fangs. Okay then. She remembered exactly how Professor Bentley had told them to complete the task properly. Taking a breath, she grasped the top of the cap firmly, ensuring herself not to hold onto it too hard. She reached down and gripped one of the fangs, pulling downwards swiftly. The fang came out in one clean motion. Smiling to herself, she placed the first fang into the jar. Now for the second one...

Reaching out she grabbed another fang. Repeating the same steps as what she did the first time, she successfully removed the second fang.
She then placed both fangs in the jar that had been placed next to the blackboard. She then went back to her stool, relieved that the lesson was almost over.

Juniper looked around the classroom and watched her classmates saying the numbing charm and removing the fangs. Noticing some of the numbing charms did not work right away and some of the fangs took some pulling to get out. Quitetly shivering to herself Juniper said the numbing charm and held her breath.
Juniper really did not want to inflict any pain on the mushroom, but knew she had to concer her fears. Reaching out to grab the cap she did not feel any movement. Silently saying a silent "thank you" Juniper tried to pull out fang number one.
Hoping noone saw her trembling hands Juniper tried to pull out the fang. Grabbing the fang Juniper tried to pull it out. A smile spread across her face when it started to come out.
Okay, now where is the jar? After putting the first fang into the jar Juniper tried for the second fang. Saying a silent 'please' Juniper tried to remove the second fang. "yeah," Juniper said very softly when the second fang came out.
After depositing the second fang into the jar Juniper looked around the classroom to see how her classmates were doing.

Time to pull out the second fang. Shouldn't be too hard.
With her left hand, Vashti once again got a firm hold on the cap of the toadstool and used her right hand to take hold of the remaining fang. She gripped it tightly, took another deep breath, and yanked hard down on the fang - and out it came! Thank Merlin.
She dropped the second fang in the jar with the first one and sighed with relief. Finally done with that activity.

That I did not expect! Kynthia thought. The fangs? Really? Fangs? She hated dentists ever since her first visit when she was 6 years old. That was her first and last visit. Who knew? Instead of Herbology she was attending How-To-Pull-Teeth-Out 101. Poor toadstools... she thought as she approached the one closer to her stool and proceeded to cast the spell. I really hope this works and I don't cause the poor thing any pain she said wand at the ready.
When she realised she'd forgoten the most important step. The gloves! She lowered her wand, went back to her toadstool and put her dragon hide gloves on.
"Viro Torpeo!" She said with a jab of her wand. She was certain she would have to cast the spell a few times in order to have the desired effect since this was her first time using it after all, but the toadstool's movements slowed down and it looked a little dazzed. A little cautious in case the spell hadn't worked after all, Kynthia approached the mushroom and got a hold of its cap. It did fight a little but the spell had defenitely worked.
Here goes! She thought as she got a firm grip on a fang and gave it a fast but strong pull downwards. After a while it was evident that seeing the teacher pulling the fang and actually doing it were two completely different things. And feeling sorry for the plant was not helping at all with her efforts. Hehe someone needs to work out a little. Finally the first fang came out and Kynthia looked at the toadstool to see if it was alright. It seems to be okay...On the other hand maybe its so quiet because it fainted or something. Can mushrooms faint? She hoped it was okay. She'd feel terrible if she caused it any harm.

Harlow had never encountered biting plantes before. Her mother strictly forbade it, so she was hesitant to touch the toadstool, but she pulled on her dragon hide gloves and grabbed her wand.
She felt like her toadstool was glaring at her because he knew what she was about to do, "Be nice." she told wagging a finger at her toadstool. "Viro Torpeo," and she flicked her wand. The toadstool stopped moving and her hand was inches away from the thing when it snapped at her. She squeaked and scrambled back.
"Be nice," she told him again. "No biting," She looked around the room to see what it was she had done wrong. "Jabbing," she smacked a gloved hand against her forehead. She had flicked when she was supposed to jab.
She took and deep breath and moved back over to the toadstool, "Viro Torpeo," she said with a jab. The thing seemed to slump a little bit and she touched it tentatively. It didn't move.

After checking for the well-being of the toadstool for the millionth time, Kynthia decided to proceed with the second fang. She wanted to do everything quickly in case the numbing spell wore off, but didn't want to do badly either.
Taking a hold of the cap again she placed her hand around the second fang. This time she decided to put all her strength in it. Its supposed to hurt less this way, anyway she thought. That's what her mother always told her. She wasn't quite sure about how true that was though...
Taking a deep breath, she pulled the fang as fast and hard as she could. Fortunatelly it came off at once this time, so she stepped away from the toadstool and after giving it a worried look, approached the toadstool with the jar on it and deposited the fangs. Returning to her seat, she waited patiently for the rest of the class to finish with the fangs.

Waiting for a few moments as the spell got a stronger hold on the toadstool, Gideon then moved in for the next steps...the actual removal of the fang. Or fangs since he would be repeating the process to get both of them out of the fungi. The half-blood felt an odd reminder of what it no doubt resembled a scene from a dentist's office and a human tooth extraction
He grabbed ahold of the cap of the toadstool, loosening it just a little to try and insure it wasn't too tight yet still a secure old, though how he could be sure was anyone's guess. Then reaching with his free hand, the Gryffindor took a hold of the one fang, pausing as he got a good hold before yanking it out letting out a sigh of relief when it came out in his hand complete and without too much trouble.

Determined to retrieve the second fang, William aimed his wand at the toadstool once more. He didn't want it to wake up while he was prying the fang loose.
"Viro Torpeo," he said once again while simultaneously making a jabbing movement with his wand. He wished there was a more visible sign that the spell had worked. But trusting it did, he moved forward, took a hold of the toadstool once more, and began pulling on the fang. He had much more success the second time around, for the fang slid out quite easily. Triumphantly smiling, he placed the second fang into the jar and sat back down on his stool. He slid his now dirty dragon-hide gloves off of his hands and stowed them in a separate pocket in his bag. Sitting quietly, he rubbed his watery eyes. The last thing he needed was another allergy attack. | |

Biting Toadstools? Really? That was so.....wizarding worldish. Daniel had a little smirk on his face. Yes, he'd gotten the question wrong but so what? It wasn't about points was it? It was about OWLs. And those he would pass, which involved notes. Daniel grudingly took out his notebook and started scrawling what professor....Bently? He was writing what she said.
After finishing writing and the hand cramp which followed, he really should write more in the holidays, Daniel got out of his seat and went to the biting toadstool. He pointed his wand at the Toadstool and said clearly, "Viro Torpeo" There done. Daniel reached down to take the Toadstool for harvesting and was greeted with a pain in his hand. Great. Blood. He should've remembered his gloves!
Daniel slipped on his gloves quickly, ignoring his throbbing hand. It wasn't that bad. Back to the Toadstool, Daniel jabed his wand this time, repeating "Viro Torpeo" This time no bites! Success!

Yanking out a fang!!
Harlow danced from her left foot to her right foot to work herself up to do it.
She took a few short breaths and placed a gloved hand on top of the toadstool. The thing wiggled a bit, but didn't put up much of a protest. She reached down and grabbed and fang and pulled.
Her hand slipped right off and she staggered forward almost face planting into the cap of the toadstool.
She was so good gardening this was frustrating her. Harlow thought she would be good at Herbology. She checked the instructions on the board and realized she wasn't yanking down. "Slow down and follow the directions," she chastised herself.
Harlow read through the instructions once again to make sure she had them down and went back to her toadstool. Placing her hand on the top he grabbed the fang and yanked down and the fang popped right out. She smiled at herself and moved to yank the last one out.

Daniel triumphantly lifted up the Toadstool in the air. He was so happy with himself that he almost forgot what he had to do. But hearing yanks reminded him.
This would be simple, no? Daniel placed one hand on the cap, tightly and with the other pulled at a tooth. Then he realized it wasn't a fang....thankfully no one had been looking.
He placed his hand on a pointy tooth and pulled as hard as he could and heard a faint POP as the tooth came free.

Jez jabbed her wand at another toadstool. "Viro Torpeo." The toadstool tried to nip her gloved fingers, but its aim seemed worse than usual. It managed to bury one fang into the tabletop. Jez gave a frustrated growl. Well, at least the poor thing was pinned down. She gently pinned the toadstool's cap, and yanked out the tooth that wasn't attached to the table. After putting down the first tooth, she tried to release the toadstool from the table's clutches. It was stuck tight. The toadstool wriggled, obviously not enjoying being stretched. Jez gritted her teeth, and gave one big quick tug. The toadstool came out, leaving the offending tooth in the table. She put down the toadstool, and wrench out the tooth in a way she hadn't dared to before for fear of hurting the poor little toadstool. She dropped both teeth into the bin, and gave the toadstool a little pat on the cap as she made her way towards another toadstool. "Sorry," Jez whispered to it. It gave a little shudder.

Aurora sat, watching her class mates getting on with the task, then she looked back at the now fang-less Toad Stool in front of her. Poor little thing, it wasn't fair that they had to take out it's fangs. "It's alright, you'll grow them back... and you've contributed to a good healing potion in the mean time. Or a poison... but probably a healing potion." She stroked the cap of the mushroom affectionately as it swayed sleepily. They were wonderful things. She waved her gloved finger and it half-heartedly nipped at it. Awww, still numbed...
"Professor Bentley..." yes, back to talking to humans. "How old are these 'stools?" You know, because if they were young their fangs would grow back quicker...

After pulling out her first fang, Maddy grabbed hold of the second one "fang number two" and gave it a sharp tug. The fang popped out smoothley and Maddy dropped it into the jar. " Ok, I'm done" she said. She She placed the toadstool back on the table, I hope these things sre used to this Maddy thought then they probly wouldn't be in as much pain. She sat back down on her stool after and slipped of her Dragon hide gloves, they were all dusty now and covered in toadstool goo. She decided to clean them off before putting them back in her bag; so she clapped them like chalkbored erasers; away from the tables.

Caroline took the toadstool and placed a hand around the cap, firmly but not so much that it would mess up the plant. She moved her other hand around and grabbed a fang.
Haha, Stupid toadstools. Back for bitting the tip of her finger off. Now you're going to have any fangs (once she's done with you)
She yanked hard.
The fang was in her hand. That wasn't to bad at all. In fact that was kind of fun. Now she just had on more to go.

Okay, just one more fang.
Lana tugged on her dragon hide gloves to pull them up more. She returned to firmly grasp the cap of the toadstool.
Didn't I just feel the other fang a moment ago? she thought frowning to herself.
Again, she found herself feeling around for the other fang. Saliva getting all over her gloves. A single drop of sweat dripped down her forehead.
Is it just me or is it getting hot in here? Ooo, found it!
Lana gripped the fang and yanked it out. She turned to the professor and gave a big grin. I sure do feel awake now. And she grabbed both fangs and dropped them in the jar her professor had provided.

Then she shook her head. She was going mental, talking to a toadstool. She quickly dropped the fangs into the jar, and hurried away to another toadstool. She really hoped the others wouldn't be such tear-jerkers.

Kennedy grinned at Professor Bentley, not just because she was being nice and all, but because she didn't give him the what-a-weird-kid look. He was tired of those. The fourteen year old payed close attention as to what they had to with the toadstool. He flinched when Professor Bentley pulled out the first fang. Ouch. Then she did the second one.
Shudder.
When they got the the signal to go, Kennedy took out his dragon hide gloves and put them on. He checked that they were secure and wouldn't slip off three times. It was never bad to be paranoid...in Kennedy's mind.
He looked at the board read that several times too. Okay. Got it.
The boy did the wand jab movement and said, "Vero Torpeo." he waited to see a difference in the toadstool, but the thing seemed a little too a live for Ken's liking. He repeated the process this time putting a bit more force on his words, "Viro Torpeo!"...
The thing looked like if it got hit by a baseball or something. Kennedy then assumed that the charm did it's job.

Presley looked at her toadstool. This shouldn't be too hard. Except for the part where it could bite her! She took a deep breath, and held her wand in her right hand. Her left was still in that stupid cast and sling. None of her spells were working just right, because left was her wand hand. And the arm was broken. In multiple places. She glared at the offending limb, and tried it with her right hand. With the demonstrated jabbing motion Presley said firmly "Viro Torpeo!" Not to her surprise, it had no effect, except to anger the toadstool. She raised her right arm. "Professor? I'm having a hard time perfoming the excercise. My wand arm is broken, you see." She simply couldn't do it with her right. Not to mention the part where you needed two hands to pull out the fangs.

With the plant sufficiently drugged, Marilyn moved forward. She suppose she needed to be cautious about hurting the toadstool...It was obvious that Herbology had NOT been one of her favorite subjects.
Get a firm grip on the cap.
Firm but gentle, Marilyn wrapped her gloved fingers around the top of he colorful cap. She tried to be mindful of how tight her grip was, or wasn't. Crushing the cap definitely would've destroyed this plant.
Go for the fangs.
Was it stupid that she was nervous about sticking her fingers near this things teeth?
Reaching under, Marilyn felt around for the teeth. They weren't too hard to find...She grasped one before this thing got any ideas...
Yank.
Getting a good handle on one tooth, the blonde pulled in the downward motion...which worked because said tooth popped out.
The feeling of accomplishment washed over her...

Harlow was supremely pleased with herself. She went quickly to work on the second fang. It was still a rather unpleasant process and experience. She never thought of how they got the things they got to use in potions and things.
She vowed right then and there to never eat another piece of meat again.
Harlow shook off this thoughts as she placed her hand on the top of the toadstool and swiftly yanked out the second fang. She gave the little toadstool a gentle pat on the head. "I shall name you Princess." she declared.
Since she had yanked its fangs out she figured it should have a name.
