Default Library Reading Lounge

As you enter the Hogwarts library, what appears to be a cozy nook in one corner of the main area appears most appealing to the Hogwarts student interested in his or her reading. Upon further inspection, you see that this comfy area is larger than it had seemed on first sight. Spread throughout the room are clusters of armchairs, surrounding magical reading lamps giving off different levels of light, all of which are appropriate for reading. These clusters are perfect for study groups or group projects.

Here and there are a few lone armchairs for the student who enjoys quiet solitary reading, and a number of sofas for any that would rather stretch out and put their feet up. Be sure not to muddy them up though!

A soft glow of light is present throughout the room, with more magical lamps in each possible reading space. Be sure not to make much noise and respect some students' wishes to read in quiet.

One last note, no food or drink in the reading lounge.

Happy reading!

With the hopes of perhaps finding the mysterious Daisy, Damien headed straight for the library. The girl was definately keen on books, and perhpas wandering amongst the reading area and bookshelves might provide a chance to run into her.

Memories of the library from last year began flooding his mind as he continued to wander. The conversations he'd had with Isobel in here -- the night he first held her in his arms and that rediculous flash of light -- and the shadow he saw in the back of his mind. The Hufflepuff shuddered at the memory, hoping to never experience it again. However, he had mad a point to visit some certain professors to question them about -- things that normal 6th year Hogwarts students shouldn't really worry about at all.

As he rounded the corner he came upon a group of first year students, either struggling over homework, or simply gathering for a simple chat. He caught a few eyes that wandered in his direction and gave them a simple nod of the head as he continued his search for the elusive Daisy --

What was her last name again?

"It seemed to come naturally to me," he said, winking, "Is being muggle-born considered cheating in muggle studies? I hope not," he added.

Not to mention she hadn't really spoken to Matt after he'd gotten back, even though she'd said she would. Maybe it was the fact that most of the mysteries she'd spoken with him about earlier in term had been supplanted by actual classwork, even though there were still others that hadn't gotten answered. Either way, she hadn't really thought much about not having seen him yet. Keeping Ravenclaw in the lead was too distracting, and there was always the egg for Charms and all the other assignments.

Walking into the library with a few books and her school bag, as the common room had been just a bit too loud to concentrate in with what she was trying to work on right now, she headed straight for the reading area. At least that should be quiet, as it was part of the library. Libraries were always supposed to be quiet, as far as she knew. It seemed she was going to be able to accomplish two things at once, though, as she saw who was already in there. "You mean I'm not the only one buried in studying?," she asked quietly as she settled into a chair near Matt and his tower of books and took out her Charms notes. Maybe starting with that would be good, since it was one of her better subjects.
It seemed like going back home was really a bad idea since he hadn't expected to have missed so much over three days, but that didn't mean that he was about to just give up since that word didn't exist in his dictionary. The question was what to start first? Possibly History of Magic since it didn't seem so bad and it was second to Muggle Studies as Matt's favourite subject since he liked to know exactly what events and people were considered substantial even in current times. He grabbed the piece of parchment with the questions on it and read it over before looking back at the textbook, hmm this definitely wasn't going to be as simple as he originally thought it would be but at least he'd have the peace and quiet that he needed to be able to focus properly. Between the whole rule with having to yell while in the dungeons while wearing gloves that were your house colour was not only weird but it made for being able to think or even have a normal conversation nearly impossible and he couldn't handle that much more since it was almost like listening to his cousin speak.

As he had continued to read a paragraph that he had skimmed over before, he heard Stella's voice and smiled ever so slightly; he wanted to speak with her about things since he hadn't had the chance before he left but it seemed as though now was as good as time as any. "Nope, I've got to play catch up on top of studying. Plus I want to get in some revision for Ancient Runes, so I'm pretty busy now." Even though there was more than enough work as it was for him, he somehow felt the need to see how well he could remember at least writing something in Medieval rune. Okay, Stella's here and all you can focus on is school work. Is there something wrong there? He wasn't letting himself get distracted by anything since he knew that he had to focus.

Even just looking at the tall stack of books near Matt, Stella knew he was busy. She couldn't really blame him, and honestly, she was busy enough without distracting herself with conversation. There were a lot of homework assignments, and they weren't about to do themselves while she occupied herself elsewhere. Just as the other studying she needed to do wasn't going to just happen while she slept, no matter how amazing that would be if possible. So she was perfectly fine with just studying, as long as she knew she wasn't going to startle him if he'd looked up during a break in whatever it was he was doing. That was her only reason for speaking, or at least that was what she was telling herself.

She'd even gone back to her Charms notes before he'd responded, which made her feel even more that her only reason for speaking had been to make her presence known before things got quiet. She looked up again as he'd spoken, however. "Naturellement," she said in French, almost without thinking, but then laughed a little in embarrassment. "Don't let me distract you," she continued, making sure she spoke in English. "I have studying to do myself, but feel free to ask me if you need any help with catching up." And she lifted her school bag slightly from where it was resting on the floor near her chair, to show she had her own things to occupy herself. Other than the notes in her lap, of course, as those wouldn't take her long. Not Charms. "Well, except for maybe with Runes." She was almost as hesitant about that lesson as she'd been with Potions, so she doubted she'd be able to help much. Either way, she was perfectly willing to go back to her studying if he wanted to go back to his.

What was her last name again?
Scratch. Scratch.

Ugh. Daisy had forgotten how itchy and uncomfortable the knee-high wool socks her mom packed her could be. Why did her mom insist on these heavy socks? Didn't she know that the castle wasn't that drafty? Why hadn't she picked up new sock in Diagon? What had she been doing instead?

Looking for a book.
An unfindable book.
A book that apparently did not want to be located.

And now, having spent a good deal of time looking in the Hogwarts card catalogs, she knew that the school did not own a single copy of the book either.

What was a girl to do?

Scratch. Scratch. Scratch.

The sock fell down, bunching around her ankle. The only thing that kept up the gold and red sock was the top of her blue conserve-like high-top that absolutely did not go with her school uniform or house colors. She tugged the sock up, balancing the load of books she had pulled to research some homework for history class in the crook of her other arm. One very large olive green book almost fell, but Daisy shifted her weight and stomped her foot just a bit as finished with the itchy sock.

Guess I should find a spot to look at these...or....check them out. Glancing at the pile of books, she imagined having to haul them up to Gryffindor tower. Nope - reading them here. Daisy could, at times, be a very very lazy person who made poor decisions - as evidenced by her socks.

"I ..." How was Jez going to put this? "I kind of ... already knew about that. I was worried about you and Faina - how you guys would take it." Although Jez didn't know Faina personally, she'd seen her around, and thought she looked a decent person. "Poor girl, is she okay? What about you?" She squinted at Nate. "You don't look too upset." That was good, at least. "Do you think you'll be going to Flying lessons?" she asked.

Wait, did she just speak French? Matt wasn't going to be distracted by that since he was really looking to get this work done before more piled up on top of it; which at the rate he was going was going to happen so this definitely would have been a perfect moment to have a time-turner so that he could avoid all this. Maybe you should just stop thinking about random things and just get back to studying. That really was the best idea at this point. But when Stella had mentioned if he had needed help catching up, he couldn't help but consider if that would be useful now since he had in fact missed a few things. "Hmm, now that you bring that up. I was wondering if you could help me out with History of Magic, this seem to be a bit more interesting than what I've seen before." In other words, it was just difficult. So as long as it was clarified in something that he could understand, he could get back to work without a problem.

After he spoke, he picked up his quill and started randomly drawing something on a spare piece of parchment out of boredom; it seemed as though time was moving way too slowly and even though he had the mountain of books next to him to tackle, he just was starting to have enough of it. What happened to being determined to get everything done here? Apparently the library was starting to get a bit more loud and he didn't want to have to leave again, where was the librarian now?

Stella was most definitely using her notes as a distraction from her embarrassment over slipping into French yet again. Even if she loved the language, she didn't need more reasons to be seen as not really a Hogwarts studen t when she definitely was one. She just was one who had a different place she'd come from, and no matter how much she wanted to say she wasn't French, it seemed her brain didn't want her to forget that she was honestly more French than English. Ten years didn't go away just because she'd rather remember when she was a toddler. She'd looked up again as Matt finally spoke, though. Relieved that he hadn't questioned her earlier slip.

"What about History of Magic?," she asked, remembering that lesson. Professor Scabior definitely had a different outlook on the subject than any of her previous History of Magic professors. Of course, there was also the fact he was easier to look at than most of her other History of Magic professors, but she was fairly certain that wasn't what Matt was confused about. In fact, as she tried geting back to actual studying in her thoughts, she noticed Matt had started sketching on some parchment and found it was easier to just move from distraction to distraction than just break free altogether. Leaning forward, she tried to see what he was drawing, notes abandoned for the time being.

Jez could see that Willow was a little miffed about Nate's not being exactly sociable with her before. She decided to talk to him about that later. Meanwhile, she supposed she shouldn't interrupt Willow's reading with conversation now.

Jory decided not to say anything; Gwen looked as if she regretted it. ''Back to extra work as soon as you're here, huh?'' He looked at the book and wondered how many potions were listed in there.

"How about making a list of the potions that sounds good to you and then narrowing it down to the ones that you really would like to make?'' the young Huffie suggested. ''Have you made any potions last year? Out of class, I mean.'' He took a seat next to Gwen, peering at the book. "I was reading Fantastic beasts and where to find them. My common room's noisy. How was your holiday, anyway?''
Gwen wanted to start apologizing for her behaviour, but didn’t. What’s the point in saying ‘I’m sorry’, anyway? I really don’t get it, she thought and continued flipping the pages of the book, trying to remember a few page numbers.

Back to extra work as soon as I’m here?Yes, Gwendolyn wanted to reply, but didn’t. ‘Are you mocking me?’, the second year asked him, not really with a cold tone, like she usually did, but actually smirking. Looking at Jory, Gwendolyn gave him a crooked smile. He looks so puzzled!, the young Ravenclaw realized, not sure why Jory stared at that book for such a long time. ‘I know it’s pretty much…. ‘, she wanted to start explaining, but then stopped. Explain what? He didn’t ask anything!

‘All right….Mister know-it-all’, Gwen said and tried not to frown but couldn’t. That was actually a good idea and the ravie was upset she didn’t come up with that herself. ‘Aham….let’s see’, she mumbled, starting to write on a new piece of parchment. While flipping the pages of the book and writing down each potion mentioned in there, she heard Jory ask her something. ‘I did…. The Wit-Sharpening potion’, Gwen replied proudly.
‘Really?’, she asked and glimpsed at the book that he held in his hand. ‘I planed on reading that…’ But eventually gave up that idea. There are plenty more interesting books in this library. ‘What’s it like?’

Your Common room is noisy?!? O_____o Of course… it is full of Hufflepuffs. Ugh- those dumb first year Hufflepuffs, probably. The ones she almost hexed at the start of the term. ‘My holiday?’, she repeated, more like to herself, while writing a few more potions on the piece of parchment. ‘It was all right. I spend most of my holiday with my parents. Home. I started….’ Learning how to fly, she wanted to finish the sentence. ‘… practicing more for Quidditch’. Meh… it’s not like I lied about it…. ‘And I also met a few friends. How about you?’

After a while, Gwen placed the quill down, and looked at the piece of parchment. ‘These are…. Quite enough, I guess’, she admitted. ‘Can you help me pick one?’, she asked Jory. Something interesting, preferably…

One could argue the library to be a rather creepy place when you were the only person wandering the shelves or reading lounge. Ever since the group of first year students, Damien hadn't come across any one else, the pin-drop silence was almost deafening.

Not that he'd admit he was scared of the place or anything -- up until last year, he never even ventured through the doors of the library. Up until the moment he realized these books might be able to help him out somehow.

The small bound book he'd purchased from the Third Hand Bookstore in Diagon Alley was tucked into his right hand and his newly acquired messenger bag hung on his left shoulder as it drapped down across his chest to his opposite side. What was that muggle word some people used to describe how boys and girls dressed? Proppy? No that wasn't it. Peppy. Eghads, no. Damien would rather get eaten by a dragon than be called Peppy. The only real thing any of his friends would notice about his appearance would be the slightly longer hair -- no one really paid attention to how the boy dressed did they?

Thud.

He turned, suddenly at the sound, wondering if it was one of the ghosts playing tricks. Not hearing any voices, Damien turned completely around and started walking in the direction of where it came from. Rounding the corner he found the source.

Daisy's back was turned to him, but he recognized her immediately. She was struggling with quite the load of material, and apparently her socks as well.

"Ever hear of reading too much?" he questioned as he came up along side her, before reaching out his free hand to take two of the books out of her arms.

Jory watched as Gwen flipped through the Potion book's pages. "Of course, I'm not mocking you, Gwen,'' he said noting that she did not sound quite as cold as she sometimes did. "I just think its admirable. Not much people want to brew potions as soon as they returned from holidays. Like me, I'm still a bit lazy.''

The Hufflepuff watched as Gwen took his advice and started working on a list. ''The Wit-Sharpening potion? Wow! Not that I don't think you wouldn't make it right, but did you get it right?'' Jory asked.

Placing his book on the desk, Jory said "Interesting! Knowing about the creatures can come in handy in class.'' He watched as the list of potions got long.

Jory realised he didn't even know where Gwen lived. He asked her this. ''My holidays were great. We took a trip to Hawaii. Are you trying out for the Ravenclaw Quidditch team?''

He looked down at Gwen's extremely long list. "This is going to be harder than I thought,'' he said to himself. He read through the list two times and finally said, ''Essence of Dittany. I think its a useful potion to have around.''

”Cheese and crackers!” Daisy exclaimed a bit too loudly for the library. She glanced around as her heart pounded in her chest to see if the librarian was around. It looked as if she’d be safe…for the moment. “Hasn’t anyone every told you it’s bad form to sneak up on people?”

He plucked two big books off the pile in her arms and she shifted the rest around as her sock slid half-way down her calf again. She ignored it. “What are you doing in here?” she asked as she made her way over to an empty sofa. She was about to drop the books on the sofa, but stopped halfway remembering the scolding some other poor soul had gotten upon the librarian seeing them mistreat the books. She turned, pulled her satchel off over her head and dropped it on the floor before plopping down on the sofa next to the books. Her hand sought out her exposed calf and she started scratching around the itchy red and gold socks. As she looked at Damien, a look of ecstasy filled her eyes as if she had wanted to scratch her legs all day and couldn’t.

Trying to rearrange his thoughts as Stella had asked about History of Magic, Matt decided to continue on his sketch before answering; at least that was going to be a good distraction until he could say something that didn't sound completely stupid. He grabbed a different colour of ink and started outlining the image of a phoenix in red before cluing in that he should actually say something without this being completely awkward and weird. Stop thinking, are you intentionally trying to be all odd here? "Oh, I don't think I was actually there for that class so I was wondering if you could at least explain it. Honestly, I think going back home now was a seriously bad idea on my part.. way too much to do." He sighed slightly and continued on his sketch before even trying to go back to the textbooks, honestly they could wait.

As the image of the phoenix became more visible, he realized that this wasn't exactly productive nor was it the reason that he was in the library to begin with but at least this was the chance to sketch out an idea that he'd been thinking about for the past little while. "So tell me isn't the fact that you're a Ravenclaw and hanging out in the library kind of living up to the old traits of the house?" For some reason he was feeling like bringing up such a random point, if it brought up some kind of debate then game on; he could handle it.

Nate turned to Willow and smiled. "So, Willow... Nice name. So, what's your favorite class so far?" he asked. He realized that e had said 'so' a few times too many but that didn't matter.

While she was waiting for Matt to ask what exactly he wanted explained about History of Magic, Stella went over what she remembered from that lesson in her head. And shuffled through her notes to find those from that lesson as well, just in case she needed them for whatever it was he was curious about. His sketch was still kind of distracting, just from a curiosity standpoint, and she kept finding herself peeking at it to see if she could figure out what it was. Especially as it seemed he'd moved on to adding color, which fleshed the drawing out even more. "That's amazing," she said quietly, almost without thinking, before snapping back into reality as he finally asked a question. Nodding, she glanced back down at her notes. "It shouldn't be that hard to catch you up. First thing," which wasn't in her notes, but was a good bit of advice, "Professor Scabior isn't a professor you can make random comments to. He says he likes taking points, and it's obvious he isn't lying. But subject-wise, we discussed how sometimes we need to learn about the people and events that aren't as widely known or important, and how we need to go back longer than the most recent historical events to really learn history. But the actual lesson was about..."

She trailed off as he'd spoken again. Not so much because he'd interrupted her train of thought but more because of what he'd said, and she eyed him for a moment. "Isn't the fact you're a Slytherin and hanging out in the library perhaps trying a bit too hard to prove that you're not living up to the stereotypes?," she parried, not really insulted that he'd ask that but just as willing to start up a debate as he seemed to be. It appeared History of Magic was going to have to wait for a while.

Was it strange that he kept on sketching when he should have been studying? Not entirely, Matt would have rather finished the picture of the phoenix than bothered with doing anything else alas the work wasn't about to do itself so he set down the quill for a moment. When Stella had commented though, it made him want to finish the picture so that she could see exactly what it would look like when it was finished but as she started talking about what had happened in History of Magic; he grabbed another piece of parchment and started taking notes, well it was important to know especially what the professor was like since he wasn't looking to lose any points for Slytherin, not when they were in first place. "Hmm good to know, I'm not one of those people who decides to make random comments during class anyway." He saved that for when he was around friends since it just made things absolutely hilarious at times.

But when she spoke again, he smirked ever so slightly; so much for being productive now, he had to focus on this interesting debate. "Ah touche, however if I was actually living up to the stereotype of a Slytherin; I wouldn't be socializing with you." That wouldn't have been much fun either since he enjoyed talking to her, mainly since it ended up being strange discussions about the most trivial things but it was never a dull moment even if his cousin interrupted whenever she had been in London.

Even though she really wanted to see Matt's finished sketch, Stella was at least a little happy when he'd picked up another sheet of parchment to take notes on what she was telling him. She would have felt bad if she'd told him about the lesson and he hadn't had anything to have to be able to remember what he'd missed by having to leave suddenly. Just because he wasn't a fellow Ravenclaw didn't mean she had it in her to sabotage him. Of course, she couldn't really tell if it was just him, or if she wouldn't be able to sabotage anyone from another house. That was part of her thoughts she was trying not to focus on, especially since she'd always tried to just be a generally all-around good person. It wasn't her fault if not that many people knew that yet, since studying took up a lot of her time. "I'm not either," she replied as he'd spoken, though. Thankful for another distraction, as stressing about everything wasn't very calming.

And then there was the brewing debate. She knew it was coming, just as much as she didn't really blame him fro making the instigating comment. And she had to avoid moving straight into an explanation of why exactly she'd needed to be in the library as much. Transferring in her OWL year was a bit more work than any other time, but she hadn't been able to avoid it. She'd taken the opening provided for her, and she laughed softly at his response. "Bien essayé," she responded, knowing the change in language was likely to at least throw him off for a moment. "Although, to be accurate, I would expect a true Slytherin to do whatever they very well liked as long as they felt it was to their benefit." Which, in one sense, was exactly what he was doing, taking her up on her offer to help him catch up with his studies. Although she also knew he just enjoyed their random conversations.

See Nik likes the cold and I like the heat so we have to try and find somewhere that is a balance of both."

Mia nodded her head in agreement. "Yeah that's what I think too. But of course there are those out there that don't." She shrugged her shoulders. Personally she didn't get it. Nik's parents were like that and so were her own grandparents. That's why they didn't talk to them anymore.

Oh that could certainly be a lonely life. Not being able to make friends because you were constantly on the move. Mia shrugged her shoulders again. "Um...I don't know. I guess I was lucky because I met quite a few people in Diagon Alley who were new to Hogwarts as well so that made it easier I guess." She knew that Lauren was looking for tips but Mia didn't know what to tell her. She just had one of those personalities. "I'll talk to anyone so that certainly helped. Maybe just relax and be yourself and take things however they come."

Yeah she had to admit that some of the Professors were weird. Take Shaw for instance. Thank Merlin he wasn't going to be here this term. "Wait until potions. Never a dull moment in that class."
"Oh nice," Lauren commented with a nod "I love Fiji. Snorkelling there is amazing. Seriously. I prefer warmer countries," she explained in a matter-of-fact tone. "Wand shop huh? Where have you considered? Maybe New Zealand, it's so geographically diverse. Australia, too," Lauren mused with a thoughtful smile.

"And, cool," Lauren grinned in relief. She so did not want to end up ending this conversation, resulting in an conflict so early in the term! Or, at all, really.

She nodded sincerely, listening to Mia's speech. Any advice right now was totally appreciated, so she smiled at the older girl "Thanks. I'll take that into consideration. I've met some, so I'm not a total loner," Lauren joked with a wink. "What's your House like?"

"Potions?" she asked with a gulp. Oh, Lauren hated potions. And if the teacher was no good, well then, she was in SO much trouble...
