The first floor was... certainly busier in a different way than Professor Schirmer's own usual haunt of the third level. Less injured children she supposed, and more Dash. She wondered if the professors of the first floor were more social as a result and made up her mind to befriend the healer. Third floor solidarity.
The classroom she'd chosen for the defense lesson had been one of her favourites as a student, and the tall blonde woman was a little bit dismayed to see how dusty and unused it was. Really, Hogwarts was it so hard to keep yourself clean? Even with elves that were off doing goodness knew what? A few quick charms and minutes later the room was sparkling.
Literally.
Unlike most of the Defense rooms, this one featured bright windows that allowed the light to stream in, diffused with colours and generally giving the room a bright and happy feel. The view looked out over the lake. There were no desks or chairs in the room and even the professor took a seat on the ground, waiting there with her feet tucked up comfortably beneath her for the students to arrive. She had a stack of books next to her and looked serene, if a bit distant.
When it was time, she charmed the doors to open, and greeted the students as they begin to file in.
ooc: the lesson will begin approximately 7.5 hours from the time of this post I'm simply opening it now so you can post arriving if you want to. The lesson has begun! Please act as if you were here all along if you haven't yet posted, latecomers will likely lose points. Please remember to follow Professor Schirmer's rules which can be found here.
SPOILER!!: the room looks something like this

In addition the room is now decorated for a party. Balloons and streamers are everywhere, there are tables set up with food and drink, and music playing to add to the festive feel.
Questions: What do you know, or think you know, about the Patronus Charm?
Discuss amongst yourselves some famous witches and wizards and their known Patronus forms. Given what we know about them; their achievements, their experiences, what do you think their Patronus form indicates about their personalities?
For those of you who can cast a Corporeal Patronus and know what form it takes, see if you can match up how it fits your personality. Younger students, you can work with students who do have a known Spirit Guardian, or you can look up mine, which is a Dove, or Headmaster Tate's which is a Mountain Goat, or that of another adult you know, even some of the historical figures we were discussing.
"I want you to think of your happiest memory. Something strong enough that you can focus on it easily, maybe something that makes you smile. It doesn't have to be relating to love. If you have more than one, lucky you! You can experiment to see which is best. You don't have to share it if you don't want to, but feel free to put your hand up and share if you do.
----------------------------------
Levitation party activity! Click here for instructions. Read the post carefully and please take note of your classmates posts following this one too. Worth ten points!
edit: Activity still running, only please focus on the third part, AKA testing out your happy memory with a levitation potion.
The party is still going, you can help yourself to food or drink while we wait for a guest fetched via a patronus message. In the meantime the professor wants to know who can cast a patronus already and whether its corporeal or non-corporeal.
PLEASE be realistic with your character's abilities. The patronus charm is ADVANCED magic and little firsties should NOT be able to manage it. For the purposes of this class please pay attention to the following:
6th & 7th years: May be able to cast a corporeal or non-corporeal patronus, depending on character's skill level and experience. May learn how to do one or the other during the lesson.
5th years: May be able to cast non-corporeal patronus, depending on character's skill level and experience, very FEW and RARELY may a 5th year manage a corporeal patronus. May learn how to do one or the other during the lesson.
4th years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, very FEW and RARELY may a 4th year manage a non-corporeal patronus. May learn a non-corporeal patronus during the lesson.
3rd years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, may learn a non-corporeal patronus during the lesson. But its okay for them NOT to learn how yet too.
1st & 2nd years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, may learn an UNSTABLE non-corporeal patronus during the lesson. This means they might manage a slight whisp, but otherwise should NOT be able to cast a patronus. Its okay for them NOT to learn how yet too.
When we get to the spell casting aspect of the lesson, please note that anyone not being realistic may have their post edited or deleted, which I don't WANT to do but we're not all Harry Potter! For reference, Althea learned hers in 6th year non-corporeally, and managed a corporeal patronus in 7th year. Remember, just because your character might not be able to do it yet, it doesn't mean they never will!
As you saw, Professor Scabior came because I sent him a Patronus message. What do you think are the benefits of communicating via Patronus?
"Alright are you all ready to give it a go? Stand up if you are and make sure you give each other a bit of space. Wands out. The incantation is Expecto Patronum. Ecks-PEK-toh pa-TRO-num. You simply need to point your wand and focus really hard on that strong happy memory. Practice the incantation a few times to get the hang of it and then you may start. Those of you who can already manage it, please do encourage the younger ones and let them see how you do it. I have an activity for you too, that we'll start in a little while!"
Please note, I'm waiting to get an all clear regarding the recent Malware threat on SS before continuing, not because of any risk, rather because several people may be staying away right now and I'd rather be sure nobody is left at a disadvantage because they don't feel safe accessing the site. Expect that the lesson will continue on sunday. Everything is all clear Sorry for any trouble.
The latest instructions can be found in this post.

"And it is time to begin. We are going to talk about, and yes we will practice, a certain charm today, one which is used in defensive magic." She paused and actually smiled again, relaxed now.
"Put your hand up and tell me what you know about the Patronus Charm." She suggested. "If you aren't sure, tell me what you think you know."
Oh well... all right then. If Professor Schirmer didn't care, then neither did Tori. She settled back onto her hands and tilted her head, contemplating the professor's answer. She was about to raise her hand when the professor was already moving on.

"So a Patronus Charm is a difficult charm which requires a strong happy memory and dedicated focus in order to cast it. That sounds easier than it is and even for those of you who might manage it in a safe and comfortable classroom, its less simple when faced with the true fear a Dementor inspires." Althea spoke to the children at large.
"It can be used to fend off Dementors and Lethifolds, and also to communicate and pass messages on, as much of your will needs to be infused into its creation." Just reiterating things.
"A Patronus may be substantial or insubstantial.... known as corporeal or incorporeal. Most of you will not manage an corporeal Patronus, at least not until you are older, but that is no reason not to learn about it now." Right?
"The corporeal Patronus takes an animal form, relating to the personality and traits of its caster. You can refer to your textbooks for this next question. I'd like for you to discuss amongst yourselves some famous witches and wizards and their known Patronus forms. Given what we know about them; their achievements, their experiences, what do you think their Patronus form indicates about their personalities?"
Hmm. Well. "I think the Patronus form... says a lot about a wizard's personality," Tori said, raising her hand. "If the wizard has like, a bubbly personality, for example, maybe their Patronus will be a little birdie. If they wizard is really courageous and powerful, their Patronus will be a lion. And maybe, if they're sneaky and clever, their Patronus will be like a dragon or something."
Made sense to her. "What's your Patronus, professor?" Just curious. Tori had no idea what hers was going to be, or if she would even be able to make a corporeal one today.

Erm... Famous wizards Nate could do, a little. As for their patronuses, he knew nothing. He simply sat there, inching closer to a group that seemed to know their history of magic. Despite being in Ravenclaw, Nate still preferred not to deal much with history. Who says that the House that is supposed to be the most studious can't have preferred subjects?

Off to discussing famous witches and wizards, and their Patronuses. Stella knew about a few, but several of them had been already said. It was a bit discouraging, but she couldn't just think about her own for the whole lesson. Not if she wanted to help her house try and catch up in house points. She glanced toward Josh as he'd spoken about love, though, then raised her hand. She had the perfect answer. At least, along the lines of his response.
"Sometimes Patronuses reflect the feeling people have towards others, kind of like he said regarding love. Severus Snape's Patronus, for example, was a doe, standing for his love for Lily Potter, which didn't fade. Also, Nymphadora Tonks' Patronus actually changed to a wolf, once she had realized her love for Remus Lupin. Even though some people also thought it had something to do with mourn ing her cousin's death, since Sirius Black's Animagus form was a dog," she replied. It didn't really address anything about personalities, but hopefully it was still good enough for the discussion.

How ironic (if that was even the right word) that they would be studying Patronuses in today's lesson, considering Vashti had been practicing casting this Charm for the past few weeks. Surely this would help her with her practice - and though she hadn't thought about it before, perhaps she could talk with Professor Schirmer about it later. She'd surely be able to help as well.
But anyway. Time to focus on the question at hand.
So she raised her hand. "I've read about a wizard known as Andros the Invincible. It's been said that he was able to produce a Patronus the size of a giant." Which was HUGE. That would probably keep away every dementor within a hundred mile radius at least. What kind of memory it would take to conjure up a giant-sized Patronus, Vashti didn't know. "If it's true, it could mean that he was a really strong wizard - since it's also said he was able to skillfully perform wandless magic - or perhaps that he had a really, really happy life." How else could he get such a huge Patronus?

Ashley checked his textbook, but somehow he was just never able to come up with something to contribute before someone else said it first. So he just read up on any additional information that came with those names and facts, taking down notes as best as he could with the paper balanced on his knee.

Sierra sat up tall and stiff as she felt the presence of another human being literally engulf her. Her eyes grew wide and she neither breathed nor moved at all in the few seconds it took the girl to hug her. When the intruding arms were removed, Sierra turned around to see just who had dared to invade her personal space like so...

Had she actually...done anything wrong? No, not that she could recall. At least Schirmer seemed to be a fairly nice person, so Sierra was sure it'd all be smoothed over soon anyway.
She quickly passed the Puffer a slight glare before turning her full attention to the discussion.

"Well, there's Severus Snape, of course," Sierra brought up. "I've read about his patronus before, and there's a really interesting story behind it." Sierra would be horrified if this sort of thing ever happened to her, but it was interesting to read about it happening to someone else. "It's said to have taken the form of someone he was deeply in love with. Then many, many years after his death, his patronus still remained identical to hers. That's how people knew he'd been in love with her for most of his life."

She listened to the girl's answer and nodded.
"Expecto Patronum is the incantation. We'll get to that."
"I'm sorry Professor. I wasn't deliberately invading Sierra's space. At least I wasn't even thinking about that. I just wanted to give her a hug to wish her well. I didn't think that she would mind. I'm sorry if she did. Did you, Sierra?"
Alyssa looked over at Sierra hoping that the Slytherin would take pity on her and agree with her.

Alyssa turned to Penny and asked,"Want to discuss this next part with me, Penny? I know of Harry Potter's patronus was a stag, Hermione Granger's was an otter, Professor Severus Snape's was a doe and Professor Albus Dumbledore's was a Phoenix. But I can't remember about the others".

A ship in harbor is safe — but that is not what ships are built for.
A patronus?
Victoria raised her hand immediately. "A patronus is a positive force that can be performed by a powerful wizard...or a wizard powerful enough to perform one." said Victoria. "It is used to shielf a dark creature...like a dementer."
"And in order to perform a Patronus Charm, we have to think of a memory, don't we professor?"
Lexi had nearly killed herself learning the Patronus Charm last term... with Neptune. They had practiced and practiced and practiced and FINALLY she could produce a full patronus... should she tell her teacher that? Hmmmm.
Raising her hand Lexi said, "I, personally, believe that one's Patronus reveals one's very, very true feelings... what one is truly like deep down." Personally opinion...
Turning to Sierra she said, "Perhaps Severus Snape's patronus keep that form not because it was his love for her, but for what the change meant to him, personally. For one's Patronus to change takes a very... important event. I.E. Lily Evans' passing in his case. But the doe represents HIM from that point forward. Something in him changed to make his animal form change, I think."

Kurumi turned around in her seat when the Ravenclaw answered. She had heard about a person's Patronus having the ability to change and had wanted to mention it previously when they were asked about what they knew about a Patronus, but she had been too busy writing down notes to answer. "I wonder what her Patronus was prior to it changing," she wondered out loud. Kurumi felt a connection with the infamous Tonks for obvious reasons. Actually, she wondered if perhaps her own Patronus would take on a similar form. "I suppose the more obvious answer would be that she had a chameleon simply because of her Metamorphagus abilities."

"I don't think her being a Metamorph had anything to do with it. One cannot simply change one's Patronus at will as a Metamorp can change one's appearance. It is typically something that rocks one to their core that causes the Patronus to change," Lexi pointed out to the perfect little Prefect. Ugh. Her tone did NOT, however, imply that she was being GRRRR about her. Nope just a sweet little tone as per usual.

Kurumi turned around again when she heard a voice speaking to her. Erm...Lexi...awkward. Kurumi averted her eyes for a moment until she heard what the older lioness had to say. "Um...I think you missed what I was trying to say," she said timidly. "I was theorizing about what it could have been before it changed...not that she could change her Patronus at will." Hence the whole I wonder what her Patronus was prior comment. She understood how the Patronus Charm worked and that you couldn't change it like you changed your own socks.
Still, Kurumi didn't say anything more. Lexi probably didn't really want to hear it anyway. Kurumi looked back at her parchment for a moment as some of the happiness she had felt when she entered the room drifted from her.

When Alyssa realized that Sierra wasn't going to back her up, she decided that it was time to own. So she raised her hand and stood up. "Professor I didn't mean no disrespect, not to Sierra and certainly not to you. I've had my differences with her and I've been wanting to apologize to her, but never could find the opportunity to do so until now. That was what that hug was for. I'll leave the class if you want me to." Alyssa bent down to pack up her things trying not to cry in front of everybody. It was best anyway. There was no way that she would be able to concentrate now especially if the Professor took house points from her, or worse yet, send her to detention.
Kurumi turned around again when she heard a voice speaking to her. Erm...Lexi...awkward. Kurumi averted her eyes for a moment until she heard what the older lioness had to say. Lexi HAD missed the first comment... and misunderstood, but she still didn't agree. "Okay so I misunderstood, but I do have to disagree a bit. Simply because she had an ability that allowed her to change does not necessarily mean that was her Patronus as well. It's what that animal represents spiritually that plays a big aspect in the form of a corporeal Patronus... meaning who she was deep down, the things that made her tick, the TRUE her would be connected with an animal that showed that."
If what Kurumi was saying was true... then her Patronus would be a hag or something terrible. Or something indecisive and mean... HEH.
Selina rose her hand, "Well, wouldn't you say that the Patronus is like a gage on the true perception of one's heart. Animals have symbols, always have, no matter what culture you are from. So someone, even if they put on a nice face, can't hide behind their Patronus. Most people's personalities and emotions stay relatively the same so they never really change. However, under extreme circumstances than can and have been prone to change. Like Tonks the Order Member who grew depressed after her cousin died." Selina took a deep breath and pressed on, "In a short sentence- its a mood and personality detector."

Raising her hand and facing Selina she smiled politely before saying, "Actually that last bit about Nymphadora Tonks is not quite correct." She smiled apologetically not exactly wanting to seem as though she was attacking the girl's logic.
"Tonks' Patronus changed not because she was depressed about Sirius' passing, but because of her love for Remus Lupin and his rejection of her for so long. Kind of like with Snape... only in reverse." Had that last bit made sense? "It was said that the two of them, Sirius and Tonks, were never really that close even though they worked together in the Order." So said her family history...

Kurumi nodded in understanding. "It was just a theory, the first thing that came to mind. Since we are discussing what a Patronus form reflects about a person, I was wondering if perhaps we could come up with a theory in reverse, since I don't think there is any historical documenting of what it was before." She paused for a moment to think so more. Lexi did have a point that it would have been something that she felt connected to, but one couldn't choose their Patronus form solely because they liked a certain animal very strongly. Harry Potter probably hadn't given stags much thought until his Patronus took that shape for example.
She thought some more.

And then Selina brought up a few things. "Maybe...assuming that her Patronus could have been a chameleon, that inner ability to be able to be so heavily influenced by others is more proof that it is possible." She was speaking entirely theoretical here. "I've read that chameleons carry the art of sensitivity and independence to master changes of the mind, body and spirit, so there might be something to be said about that."

And now they were on the topic of Snape. Kurumi had read a bit about him in the the library and was very surprised when she had read that his Patronus had been a doe. What had it been prior to the tragic events of the Potters? That was someone else she would like to theorize about to be sure. "Snape's Patronus becoming a doe I think also has roots in his ability to camouflage himself and his alertness. What happened triggered that side of him and it become more prominent than other qualities." Once again, speaking entirely in theory here. "Because of Lily Evans, erm, Potter, he knew what it was like to love and feel empathy for others...even if he didn't like showing it. All those traits are associated with a doe." That, and the ability to understand children, but Kurumi wasn't sure that that bit applied exactly.

Lexi nodded slowly. Yes. Exactly. "And Tonks' Patronus changed forms AFTER something rocked her to her core, that is what I meant. Something significant happened to her and it changed it's form. Perhaps her patronus becoming a wolf was due to the fact that she was now sensitive to that pain and learning more about herself. The wolf often symbolizes one learning about one's inner strength and power and whatnot. I think this is what caused her change."
Harry's Patronus was a stag} Willaim told the class." Harry was stubborn and dtermined" William said to the profeesor and the class. " Harry was also bold, unpredictable, a leader and not afraid to do things on his own" Willaim explained to the professor and the class.
Selina had just finished answering the Professor's question when Lexi jumped down Selina's throat with a response. Why was it that Selina could never answer a question without someone in some class thinking that her answer needed some sort of modification? It was beyong annoying, but Selina kept a smile on her face and listened to Lexi speak.
Then it happened... Lexi started to snark at Kurumi. Was she serious? Not that Kurumi could not handle herself, but Selina hated when people ripped on Kurumi because she was smart and making good points. So Selina added sweetly outwardly, "I'm pretty sure that it was a mixture of both events. I mean Harry Potter, when he relayed the story of his Hogwarts years, even commented about Sirus dying and the effect it had on Tonks. If I am wrong I apologize, but I am just repeating my source."
Then she smiled sweetly at Lexi and said, "And lay off Kurumi, she's just trying to make a point."

Lexi blinked a few times and shook her head, but still gave a very friendly smile. "Selina... I am not having a go at you or Kurumi... it's an open discussion. I was merely discussing my personal opinions on things and the knowledge that I have on the subject of Tonks seeing as I am related to her very distantly. All of the Black family actually. Sorry if it seemed that way. Now to move on, it was said that Harry THOUGHT that was the reason, but soon it was revealed that her Patronus was a wolf and that she was having issues with Remus rejecting her. She and Sirius were never closely knit." Truth.

Alyssa looked over at Sierra hoping that the Slytherin would take pity on her and agree with her.
At this point, Sierra was reluctant to get involved at all. She had no idea why she'd been hugged, so as far as she was concerned, she was out of this situation altogether. Besides, did the girl really want her to answer that question? Her gaze traveled to the Hufflepuff, whose name she still didn't know, and then up to Professor Schirmer.

Sierra shrugged as she thought about what Lexi said. "I'm not sure. The story went on to say that Dumbledore saw the patronus and was reminded of Snape's love for this woman," she said. "He asked Snape just one question--'After all this time?' Snape's answer to him was, 'Always'." She shrugged again. "So I think it still had a lot to do with the woman he loved."
"...but I do agree that something in him had to change, as well. I think maybe a part of his soul became emotionally linked to this woman," she continued, "and maybe that caused a slight personality change in him."

Sierra turned to look at the Puffer again. Honestly, ...was she still going on about this? With a sigh, she turned her attention back to Schirmer. "Professor Schirmer, ...may I?" she asked.
Lexi blinked a few times and shook her head, but still gave a very friendly smile. "Selina... I am not having a go at you or Kurumi... it's an open discussion. Seemed like Lexi was getting the tiniest bit agitated. Perhaps Selina should not have poked the older lion, she was getting cross. It was not like Selina wanted to get into an outward sparring match with someone from her HOUSE in the middle of class. So Selina nodded her head and said as nicely as she could muster, "Sorry, must have gotten my facts wrong. I'll be sure to get that right next time."
There was no reason to get in a fight with Lexi. If she had to keep her mouth shut for the rest of the period so be it. Besides she was a third year, no need to fight with a seventh.
Sierra shrugged as she thought about what Lexi said. "I'm not sure. The story went on to say that Dumbledore saw the patronus and was reminded of Snape's love for this woman," she said. Lexi smiled and nodded at the little Snake and shrugged as well. "Could be a combination of many things." She gave the girl a smile once more and then eyed the Hugglepuff that was... touching the girl in class. What the... Lexi could help Sierra remove the Huggiepuffie from the class if she wished hehe.

Lexi was still baffled as to WHY the girl thought she was being mean in the first place... She was smiling and merely participating in class, no agitation here... what the heck?
Lexi simply shrugged and smiled wider still. "No worries," she said. Really no worries... the girl was GROSSLY overreacting to the situation anyway. Perhaps she was mentally unstable...

Reason: adding Selina
Eino watched the three lionesses discuss back and forth, like he was watching a tennis match. He was confused and frustrated. He had not brought his history books for reference and he had no idea what or who they were talking about. Luckily for him, he heard Sierra's voice coming from behind, so when she was done speaking, he quietly scooted over and tapped her on the shoulder lightly. "Excuse me, Sierra, would you mind telling me who this personification of 'Serious' is, and why he doesn't like tongs?" He asked, looking puzzled. Most importantly, why didn't he like tongs? Tongs were very helpful!
