You step through the door of the Charms classroom to find...
A winter wonderland.
Everything is ice-and-snow. There are ice ridges and little snow-capped hills and, in the centre, a large ice rink. The desks are arranged on this ice-rink in neat rows, with the Professor's desk set at the front. Given that the ice-rink is charmed for now, it shouldn't be hard to get to your desk. The moment you sit down, you notice that the weather isn't downright cold: it's cool and pleasant, but not bitter.
Professor Descoteaux is leaning against his desk, his posture graceful and just a little lazy.
Jared glanced at his watch. Given the general size of the classroom, it didn't seem to have filled up; but the class area itself had, and it was almost time to start. He might as well begin the lesson now.
"If everyone has settled down... who can tell me what a charm is?"
OOC: Class has officially begun. From this point onwards, please don't RP your charrie arriving late. Just pretend [s]he was there, all along. IC chaos is always expected, but please don't go overboard with the chatter between the students. Aaand. Creative and fun answers are welcome.

'hmmmm.... well thats a pretty easy question'she thought to herself. Evie had read about charms recently and was positive about her answer. She raised her hand and said politely. "Well professor, a charm is a spell that can cause a person to act unnaturally, or their appearance to be changed or altered by the person who cast the spell , the same goes with objects it can make them also change or do something that objects can't or aren't supposed to do."'I wonder if that made sense.'

Heather raised her hand, wanting to answer. She did promise herself to be more participative in class. "Uhm...professor...most descriptions of what a charm can go either way like...a charm is something believed to bring good luck...or...a charm is attractiveness to something...but, i would think that the proper definition would be that a charm can be uhm....a verbal formula to have a magical force...casting spells for a use, something like that...like charms can be used for protection from something thought dangerous." Wow, that was a handful to answer. And that was a first Heather didn't stutter much!
Hugo's hand shot up. This was easy. He had done this on his exam last year. "A Charm is an enchantment that causes to change the way an object behaves. It's is a sort of spell," he said and nodded, looking towards Eino to get his approval of finally doing something in this class.
Thank Merlin class had finally started. She would just focus on the lesson and not let anything bother her. She could deal with it later. What is a Charm? She thought about it and flipped though her book not really looking for the anwswer there. She raised her hand. "An incantation when said adds or changes an objects properties. Termportaryly. " Mmmmm Yeah the made since, kind of.....So what. Why was it always hard to explain these things sometimes.

Iris was so very distracted. The classroom looked SO PRETTY. All white and sparkly and christmassy. The Head Girl LOVED Christmas. She had been one of the first people to come into the classroom, yet half of the students had offered their answer to the Professor's question before she even realised the lesson had started. Listening in to some of the younger students' answers, Iris figured out that they were telling Descoteaux what a Charm was. Raising her hand, the Head Girl decided to add her answer. "A charm is a spell that, generally has a positive use. They're used to make someone or something act in a way that they don't usually behave. However, they only affect the appearance and not the inherent nature of something... as that is what Transfiguration does. Some charms are really simple, and only affect a small area. An example of that are the tickling charm and the colour-change charm. But some charms are much more complex, such as the Muggle-repelling charm and the Fidelius Charm." Yeah... Iris liked to waffle. Lowering her hand, she went back to admiring all of the charm-work that went into making the classroom look like this.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Daichi listened to the question from at the front of the class. He raised his hand in the air "A charm can't hurt anyone , Right professor?" he wasn't sure about this but he thought it was right. "A charm is a incantation that makes objects or such move...or something like that" The first year bit his lip as he lowered his hand again.
Charlie liked the answers that people around her were giving and decided to go along with them. She raised her hand.
"Professor, is a charm making an object do something that's not in its nature?" She asked, rather pleased with her answer. She was sitting by herself and looked about for someone to sit next to.

Macy bit her lip and raised her hand, tentatively. "Charms are like spells, except that they are used to change something or to alter it in a better way. I think," she guessed. Mmm. She wasn't sure. Actually, she would much rather gaze up at the pretty snowflakes swirling around her head. Hehe. Preeeetty. It was a good thing she'd worn a coat.

Anasta understand that happy star was standing very far from her place of review. But she was interested in it very much. So she looked on her adoring professor with bright look and probably a mass of magic mystical words that helps her in usual life to be perfect. So... There are spells that have as object the behaviors of Being to change themselves.
Girl was in very slow contact that difficult to change, but possible.
She hopes an enchantment without teething and opens to her with wide understanding of own opinion about all.
Beth raised her hand gingerly. "Er, a charm is class develops incantations for the uses of bewitchment. They give an object new and unexpected properties." She winced, hoping her definition matched the one she had found in the book in the library a few weeks ago.
"Hey Presley, cool class isnt it. Your answer was way better than mine!" Rachel wispered back smiling.
"I kind of like it," Presley replied. "No, your answer was probably more correct. I just made something up because everyone was saying similar things. Yours was better. Hey, Charlie is sitting alone, do you mind if she sits with us?"

Charlie was alone. Presley didn't know the girl super-well, but they did share a dorm, and she was alone. She waved the tiniest bit. "Hey, Charlie! Come sit over here," she whispered to the girl.

Savannah still thinks that this winter wonderland charms classroom is AMAZING! But the professor totally ruined the coldness.
"Charms is...are...is..." Who cares about grammer now? "is a type of magic that gives an object new or unexpected property or properties." Savannah replied, hoping that the professor wouldn't realize that she repeated it off a book. It's not against the rules or anything, but it wouldn't seem...smart?
Melina let her raised hand fall slightly- she'd known the answer, but several students had already given their responses and now she didn't want to sound like she was just copying them.
But this wasCHARMS class, the class she'd been waiting for since she got that wand in her hand. She was determined to participate.
Raising her hand higher again, she replied "Yes, Professor. A charm, also known as a spell, bewitches an object or person and changes the way they'd normally behave, or gives them abilities that are not inherently theirs."
Oooh. Now she felt better. Now she felt like a Ravenclaw!!
Jared straightened up. "You did fine last year, Nika," he said, giving the Gryffindor a faint smile. She had looked less than fine in the final, last term, but that didn't mean she had done less than fine.
Him? Still alive. He hadn't been devoured by a 5X-rated creature yet, at any rate. "Not bad."
And young Alexia from Gryffindor.
"It's good to know you like it, Lexi." Students tended to be better at learning, if comfortable.
It seemed the students now trickling in were, for the most part, familiar faces. The thought was comforting, because he could at least predict the kind of mischief that might be cooked up, as a result of their... efforts? Efforts.
Yes, he'd accepted that a lesson without some form of drama, could not happen. Not, at least, in his lifetime.
"Good day, Eino, Simon. Had a good summer, I trust?"
Jared hadn't factored ladies who might not be able to keep their balance, despite the charms, into the equation. He moved, but it seemed the Ravenclaw was back on her feet - or rather, in a seat - without his help.
"Fine, there?" he asked, not unkindly.
Professor Jared. He couldn't say that students calling him that, instead of Professor Disco and D-Man, wasn't progress.
"Not too bad," he grinned.
Did 'not too bad' describe certain kinds of feelings that had chosen to plague him, of late? He'd have to look into that.
Had the Badger had too much sugar, this morning? Jared grinned. "I should expect it to." It had taken a bit of work. "How are your prefect duties coming along, Prefect Lovegoods?"
Text Cut: Hello's
The classroom had begun to fill, now. There seemed to be more simultaneous greetings than he could count, being directed at him. Quite a babble of voices and confusion, really, considering that some of the students had decided to slide into the classroom.
"Hello, hello. Had a good summer, all of you, I hope?"
It seemed two of last year's Charms Stars had stepped into the room, one after the other. Jared gave both girls a nod.
"Good morning, Selena, Helena."
...
"Hello there, Vashti." The yelling? "It's fine." He scratched his chin. "I didn't expect the rink to give the students trouble." Perhaps it hadn't been such a good idea, after all?
So the Little Human, who looked less little than she had last term, had made it to class, after all.
"Well, I am amazing," he said, grinning lazily
...
At least she wasn't giggling. Or ogling. Or attempting to hug him.
"There aren't going to be any ice wolves, Miss..." Miss? The point was, there weren't going to be any ice wolves and, if there had been, Jared had a feeling he might have had to be more concerned about protecting them from her, than about protecting her from them. "I'm not too sure about the tangerine, though."
Just saying.
And young Kurumi from Gryffindor.
"I don't think so, Kurumi," Jared said, his smile genuine. "But that does sound like an interesting idea."
....
"Treyen." Jared resisted the urge to grin.
Jared gave the Slytherin who had just curtsied a faint smile and, as she sat down, noticed... Rae?
....
Okay. Breathe, Jared, breathe.
He gave her a little nod.
Jared glanced at his watch. Given the general size of the classroom, it didn't seem to have filled up; but the class area itself had, and it was almost time to start. He might as well begin the lesson now.

Luna thought this question was going right down to basics which was okay but didn't really give her challenge anyway she didn't think it mattered since they had the whole year to learn then she stoped thinking about that and started focus on the question she put her hand up and replied ''A charm is a type of enchantment that causes an object to behave in a way that is not otherwise normel for that object'' said Luna brightly

Sitting up straighter, Thea raied her hand slightly. 'A charm can also just be called a spell..' She paused, biting her lip. 'When using a charm, it bewitches the object or thing and changes their normal behaviour.' Thea grinned. Woot!'Oh, and it may also give them abilities that aren't actually theirs!'

"Thanks," Charlie whispered back, smiling as she scooted over to sit next to her. "Charms sounds good doesn't it?"

As Iris listened to other students answer the Professor's question, she doodled on a piece of parchment. Sure, it was boring listening to lots of people answer the same thing, but the Head Girl didn't mind much. What she DID mind, however, was the two students who were sat behind her, TALKING to each other with a complete disregard for the rest of the class. Yes, the classroom was decorated all wintery. That did NOT give them the permission to talk about what they were doing over the Christmas Holidays, though.
After a minute or two of listening to them, Iris turned around in her seat. "Oi, you two." She whispered, eyeing their Ravenclaw uniforms, "Do you want to be quiet? This is a classroom, not your common room. People are answering Professor Descoteaux's question. You two chattering to yourselves instead of paying attention is rude." GLARE. "So I suggest you both pack it in before Descoteaux notices you two." Not that Iris cared if they lost points for talking... they weren't from her House. They were just extremely irritating.
ooc: Yes, Maxie hasn't replied in a good few days. That doesn't change the fact that this isn't a thread for general RP. If you'd like to RP your characters talking about the Holidays, do so in one of the very many general RP threads that the school RPG offers you, instead of clogging up classroom threads.

Melina heard a familiar voice behind her and saw her friend Luna. She'd been so busy that she'd hardly seen Luna, let alone talked to her. She felt bad about that. Catching her friend's eye, she whispered,
"Hey! Sorry I've been so busy! Wanna catch up after class?"
"Well professor, A charm is a spell that changes to behavior of who it was cast on, not what they look like. They can give them abilities that the person can't really do." Chris said. He read his charms book thinking he was right.
