The edge of the lake looks... different. There are things heaped here. Davina, wand tucked behind her ear, turns round the moment she has arrived, to see if the class is following.
"Sit down, sit down," she says. "Your cushions are charmed so that they won't get dirty, though I don't expect you're going to need them for long. Take off your shoes, if you want to. I hope no one - girl or boy - is wearing heels? That can make things difficult."
"In the Runes classroom in the castle, Miss Flores-Shepard -" she looked at the pesky!intelligent child - "Mentioned how runes are used in jewellery. This is not always for the purpose of ornamentation. Runes can make for beautiful pendants and bracelets, but do you think there can be other reasons that people first began to wear runes?"
Hmm. Why people wore Runes? Of course! Louisa raised her hand, "Superstitious people would wear Runes' alphabetic or phrases to keep the demons away or make good luck haunts them." Or something like that. She could tell that her grandma wore weird things, but that would embarrassing just now. Meh.

Iris listened to the Professor as she spoke, and Iris considered what she said. Thinking for a good few minutes, She raised her hand. "Did people start wearing runes as jewellery because of the properties and meanings of the runes? Like, people believed that wearing them as a piece of jewellery would help them out if they were in trouble or distress... Or, with the "negative rune" feeling a bit MEAN and wanted to cause trouble."
Iris rolled a marshmallow on her palm, "Like... Lets say that, I dunno, a couple wanted to start a family... But they had fertility problems and such. Then maybe they'd either make or buy some jewellery made with the runes that they believed would help them..." Iris paused while she thought for the name of the rune, " ...Like the Berkanan rune, because that is the rune that represents Fertility and growth."
Not that Iris was saying any of this was true. It was just what she thought could be the right answer.
"They likely wore runes for protection, as wards, or for other things they wanted in life. Perhaps even to display themselves. A person might wear Fehu due to being wealthy, or because they wanted wealth. A barren woman might wear runes of fertility in hopes of having a child. Such like that." She pulled her sleeve up to look at her wand holster. It had a few runes that seemed almost carved into it, but they were very small. "They may have been early versions of charms and magical objects, in an attempt to infuse an object with an intended essence."
Brittany really didnt know But she quessed anyway. "Maybe since there are so many different kinds on runic alphabets they did it to distinguish which culture they were in." She said hoping she was right but if she wasnt at least she tried. "And also will them good fortune in problem areas they had in there lives.' she added

Some of Grayson's excitement had waned as the Slytehrins had surged ahead, even though she'd wanted to giggle at Finn's ego. Instead, she'd just started eating marshmallow after marshmallow, helping to keep her spirits up. "I'd imagine people started wearing runes for the same reason as some Mugle wear religious medals. Like St. Christopher and stuff. Runes have meanings, and they think wearing them can help get them something, keep themselves safe, something like that," she said, somewhat distracted, as another question was posed. Now she was just on her own, apparently. But at least she still had an answer.

"Well, they could've worn them to communicate. Or there were a few clans that had their on rune numbers and the jewelry was to show to wich clan every person belonged", Fee said thinking if that even made sense.
Oh yes, it did made sense. Yap.Yap.
Di lowered the second marshmallow she had roasted, and nodded at the students. "The runes discussed in the house challenge, all belong to the Elder Futhark - the most common runic alphabet. These are the runes that a student is bound to come across most often at this level, and the runes that this lesson is about."

OOC: Be creative, if you want to. Don't not answer because you think it isn't the right answer. Remember, out-of-the-box answers are GOOD and appreciated. I'm heading offline for now. The lesson should resume in five to six hours. Have fun. Once again, chatting between characters is okay in small amounts.
Emmaleigh had been SO confused during the trivia game. She truly had no idea what any of them ment, and didn't know a single name of any of them. But apparently, she wasn't the only Hufflepuff the not have a clue. But this question, Yeah, she might be able to answer. She raised her hand to answer and said, "Maybe they strung them together, and wore them so they wouldn't loose them." After all, thats what she would do since she was always misplacing things. "Or, maybe they represented status in the community, or the persons wealth? Kinda like the Native American's and Wampum." She added.

"Maybe because they thought it would bring luck or show if they belonged to s group?" She said uncertainly. It made sense correct?

Trixie raised her hand a little wearily. She wasn't entirely sure at ALL why Runes would be worn so she could only take a small guess. This would be the only reason why she would wear them anyway, so personal opinion could be accepted right? Or at least she hoped.
"Could they be worn as, what could essentially be a lucky charm. Sometimes people wear these charm bracelets that they consider to be lucky where every individual Charm shows something unique. So each rune would represent an aspect of what the actual proper rune shows. So they only wore the Runes that they thought would be most significant to them at that moment in time. Or maybe a Rune that means the most to them..." she suggested.
Plus it could look quite attractive but she decided NOT to add that small detail in.
Not the answer she had been looking for, but an excellent answer all the same. "Good point," Di said. "That is certainly one point they have in common, Mr. -?"
Nameplates sounded like an extraordinarily great idea, right now.

"Dakest, ma'am." Sabel offered when questioned about his name. And now they were onto jewelery and other wear and tear uses for Runes. Munching on his s'more, he leaned back a little on his elbows, watching the fire in the center of all the students. Runes were old and probably first used as a sort of primal alphabet, which then translated to magical practices and thus engineered them into ornaments. Witches and wizards would have carried them about in their pockets for safety or quick incantations and divinators would have had them on their persons as well, which gave him a rather wacky idea.
"Perhaps common thieves carried them about in a secure pouch. That way, if they were ever caught in their criminal acts, they could whip out these stones, shake them and toss them and make up some fortune for the persecutor. That way they could not only use the excuse that they are Fortune Tellers that were merely in the vicinity to speak of this great event, but they could also work in how they were removing the object for the sake of the one they were robbing. Say it is cursed or would bring them great misfortune. As people are now, back then they were superstitious and many held great weight in any predictions about personal futures that they were given. Thus, while the reading of the Runes by the thief may not be accurate, it would certainly misguide the mind of the guard, Shopkeep, Lord or King from whom they were stealing away from the act and to the future, where surely if the object was included, they would wish to dispose of it. And ta-da. The thief gets away scotch free."

He listened with interest to the recap of the Runes, not particularly being able to focus on them at the moment with the prospect of camping.
When there was a pause in teaching, he slipped his sweater off and prodded Arya gently, offering it to her. "If you get cold." Which, despite being by a fire could happen. "Or you can use it as a cushion." Either worked and he set it down beside them so that she could have easy acess to it if she wished. Then it was S'more business and bringing his mind back to focus on the topic at hand; Ancient Runes, not camping.

Arranging all the seperate things on their appointed little spot, Ivory turned at the sound of a female voice nearby.Smiling, she nodded.
"Of course not. The more the merrier." Wiping her hands on her jeans, she held one out and shook her new friend's hand. "Nice to meet you, I'm Ivory. Ivy for short and this is Arya."
Getting the introductions out the way, now it was time to pitch their tent. Unsurprisingly, with three pairs of hands they were able to make quick work of it. 3 heads after all were better than one.
Sitting down out side their almost finished product, pondering on paint she grinned at a nearby famliar person.
Waving over at the nearby Sabel and his very competant shelter Ivory giggled as she watched her best friend approach him...or more to the point the tree next to him. That was Arya alright.
And as they brought a tarp over to shelter their tent, she stood up gratefully. "Hey that's a great idea, thanks Sabel." And she didn't mind the idea of a Hufflepuff flag one bit. "Yellow's bright color and it'd be like a beacon of friendliness."
Smiling, she turned back to the tent making last minute adjustments even as she sang softly along to Sabel's previous tune. "Badger, badger, badger, muuuushroooom....."
A while later, with a badger flag, cushions, Arya's comfy looking inside sofa, some colorchanging charms, a few homey touches along with some glow in the dark stars painted on the tent, it seemed their handiwork was finished.
Smiling at their finished product, Ivory tilted her head at the sound of the Professor's voice. A game?! Smores?!
She was totally all for it.Taking a seat near Roxxy, her bestie and Sabel, she made quick work of putting together a few S'mores. Eating the first one , she gave a little moan of happiness at the taste. "Oh my gosh these things are soo good."
But then her mind was on other things...like Hagalaz and its meaning. Which was on the tip of her tongue along with some marshmellow...which was so tasty...but nevermind that. Must concentrate...Hagalaz..what was it.
Something about the weather?
Arya gave Sabel a grateful smile and took his sweater, and placed it in her lap. She would use it as a cushion for her elbows while she roasted her marshmallows. "Thanks Sabel." The puff grinned at Ivy as she took a seat beside her, giving her a playful nudge as she got comfortable. Now that they were all settled down and making s'mores, she could actually focus on the lesson at hand and attempt to answer questions.

Arya finished snacking on the s'more in her hand while the professor spoke. She had nooo idea why people would wear runes, but she could take a guess couldn't she? "They could have worn them to ward off some dark creatures." Her sticky hand was half raised. "Like muggles used to wear garlic to ward off vampires." She wondered what would runes scare off as she worked on another s'more.

Kurumi frowned a bit as she thought some more about what could possible be related between all the runes. Some of them certainly looked like they could have been parts of kanji, Japanese characters, that she had grown up learning...and there was the fact that most of them had alphabetic representation now..."Perhaps these runes form the foundation for all written language?"

Hehe, Flores-Shepard. She needed to get used to that. It sounded way different being said out loud then it did in her mind. But back to the runes. Why would people wear them if they were not used for jewelry? Oh wait, what that one girl who gave Josh a cookie and totally was being determined if she was going on the list or not gave her an idea. "Since the runes could be used as a written language, maybe people wore them in a way so they didn't have to remember every single person's name. It was right there!" That was the only other explanation she could think of that someone else didn't say.

"Maybe the used them in their home construction. To, like, ward off bad things and to bring the good things to their family." Branwen said. "They are kinda pretty so I would, totally, tile a wall or something with them. Although you can't carry your house with you everywhere so maybe they make them into beads to wear in their hair"

slipping marshmellow on to a gram cracker then topping it with chocolat and passing it to the proffesor " could it be the natural magic in them that make humans use them as charms .that in some way humans will allways connect them self with the runes making anouther SMORE "do you think in 5000 years that the logo's of today will be thought of as runes
Selena thought about it. "They ran out of other decorating ideas and started to get desperate for something unique?" Selena offered. Because that was possible, some people who had nothing decorated clothes with like... huge feathers and everything. Hmm... "Or maybe some modern people today just use them to find a way to connect with the past," she added. Ehhh. She didn't know. Whatever. Selena didn't like ancient runes... sigh. Too much thinking.

"Bennett, Professor," Simon supplied when she commented on his answer and seemed to be fishing for his name. He relaxed back to enjoy his s'more as he listened to the professor work with and answer the rest of the class. As the next question was raised, he wasn't sure himself of any answers at first, it took several minutes and another s'more to give him time to come up with something.
"Perhaps they were worn to remember. Maybe dates since runes do have numbers attributed to them."
she dreamed of para-para-pardise ♥ ily MY Sara x Sams twinny x Kake/Anastopher/Chalie
"Maybe they were magical and each had different abilities but then it wore off and now people wear them becasue its believed that it is good luck" Katie said, Ehat the?! Oh well, she wanted to get some points for slytheirn, they must win the house cup, and if you ask me that sound correct, Hehe... WAIT there is another thing..."Or its a trick question and they do just wear it for jewelery as it looks nice?" It was possibility she was tricking us, but then again, there good be true they use for jewelery because there is a reason.
Carpe Diem: Make today extraordinary! WOOT WOOT! GRYFFINDOR!!
"Perhaps they found the meanings of the translations inspiring or beautiful." Sophia answered, simply. "For example, I have a necklace that says 'Carpe Diem' which means 'Seize the Day'." she said. "I wear it, because I found the translation inspiring." she said. "Maybe they did the same." she guessed, shrugging.
"Maybe wearing runes was common for them! I mean maybe it was like their it accessory before in those days.." Dianna said. She found them cool to wear. Maybe they did too.
Rex raised his hand. These jewels or this jewelry of Runes could be to ward off the bad spirits" Rex told the professor. " I was thinking maybe thay had some type of smell to them " Rex said to the professor.
Listening to his class members Patroclus saw that all the real answers had been said, so he decided to think a little crazy.
"Maybe one person wore a rune for the reasons everyone has mentioned, and then one person saw them and thought they looked really cool, so they did it too, then another and another. Runes; the ancient fashion statement." Patroclus laughed, it was a silly-type answer, but they were sitting outside and the night air made him silly.
