Default Quidditch Tryouts

2120-2121 SCHOOL YEAR QUIDDITCH TRYOUTS
Quote:
Before posting in tryouts, please make sure you’ve reviewed the Quidditch and Gobstones Guidelines thread in full and have submitted the required questionnaire for the character(s) you hope to place on their House team.

A reminder as well that Quidditch tryouts are open to all student-age characters whether they are a post bit or additional character.
The pitch was remarkably ordinary.

Save for a rather large trunk set right square in the center of the pitch. And a dozen wicker baskets suspended in the air.

But other than that, just open air, a clear stretch of cloudless blue sky, and enough room for every broom on the pitch to zip around freely.

Cloggs hovered several feet above the ground, arms folded loosely behind his back as he surveyed students as they shuffled across the crisp green grass in various states of nervousness. His robes stirred gently despite the complete lack of wind, his ghostly form drifting lazily from side to side as though hovering still was a herculean task.

“Ah, good. Yes, yes, hurry up now ― high knees in ― and start rolling those shoulders and flexing your fingers,” he instructed, his voice effortlessly echoing across the pitch. “Take a few minutes to warm yourselves up. Nothing complicated. Climb, descend, turn, accelerate, slow yourself down again. Get a feel for your broom and remind yourselves that it is, in fact, an extension of you rather than an especially expensive, but well-crafted, wooden passenger.”

A faint smirk crossed his face as he descended slightly so he was a bit more eye level with even the tallest seventh year.

“Keep your flying controlled. There is no prize for reaching the other side of the pitch first, and I would rather not spend the morning watching anyone discover the limits of their braking distance.”

His gaze swept across the group once more before his expression softened, just slightly.

“And enjoy it. If flying isn't enjoyable, I'm afraid you're doing it wrong.”

He lifted the silver whistle around his neck and blew through it sharply.

“Off you go.”

OOC: Welcome to quidditch tryouts! Please go ahead and have your character(s) mount their brooms and take to the skies. If your character is a first year, be sure that they grab a school broom located near the entry to the pitch, as always.

For this round, have your character take to the air and practice some basic flying: climbs, descents, turns, acceleration, slowing down, hovering, etc. Feel free to show off their usual flying style or any particular strengths they have!

We’ll get to that suspiciously large trunk and those baskets in the next 36-ish hours!

TRYOUT PROGRESSION

Please note that you may jump into tryouts at any point in the progression ― whether that means catching up on previous phases or jumping right in to the current one.
  • CATCH-UP PHASE: Warm-Up Flying & Stretching
  • CURRENT PHASE: catch those crests!

Viano had made sure to turn up early for tryouts with Diego by his side. He was very optimistic about the prospects of them both making the Gryffindor team this year again, even as he wondered about the baskets. He nodded briefly at Cloggs, squinting after slightly because you know… the sunlight made it sort of difficult to see a ghost. But of course they were going to be diving straight into warm ups! Vi rested his broomstick on the ground for a bit, taking the time to do the bodily warm ups. As he did so, his gaze scanned the pitch for Connor, a tiny smirk playing on his lips. But he couldn’t let Con be the full focus of his attention. Not just yet, at least.

“Here we go,’’ he cheerfully told Di, finally glad that the shrill of the whistle had pierced the air. But just before he mounted his Moontrimmer Dlite, Vi whipped out a vibrant red headband, pulling it on so that his hair would be kept out of his face. For certain he would not have Cloggs all up in his space, giving hinting looks this time around?

That small task out of the way, Viano threw Diego a grin and kicked off from the ground, gradually beginning his climb.

Levi was pumped!

Just think! When he had joined Hogwarts as a firstie, he had been uncertain about what he would be doing with his life - as from being a student, that is - but Quidditch had taken a key spot. He was grateful to the sport for being one of the factors that helped boost his confidence.

He arrived at the Pitch, waving to those who gathered there, including Professor Cloggs. “All the best, guys,’’ he told everyone close by. Enthusiastically he began his shoulder rolls - one might be concerned that he may somehow cause injuries to said shoulders because of this. The same could be thought for flexing those digits of his. Listen, this Hufflepuff just could not wait to get airbourne.

He scanned his surroundings for Diallo before he took off. The best friend was another reason for his confidence. The wind whipped him in the face as he ascended. Even the sunshine felt lovely, and after deciding that he was at a satisfactory altitude, Levi began his acceleration.

Wheee!

Default Calliope Barrington | Slytherin [chaser] (the other menace to post later)
astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf

Calliope's arrival to the pitch was, as usual, accompanied by the immediate sweep of dark eyes across the gathered students and tightening of her thick brown ponytail. Not that she was looking for anyone in particular. Obviously. She simply liked to know who was here and who she was up against.

It just so happened that she was also looking for a certain red head.

Something in Calliope's shoulders loosened before she could stop it. There was no denying that she'd been wondering whether this year's tryouts would carry the same particular tension as the last. Only, now she knew exactly what that tension had been and, well, they had thoroughly remedied it. Problem was not that she had not anticipated just exactly how addictive it could be ― almost as intoxicating as flying itself.

Almost. All things needed to know their place.

Whatever they were now, Calliope wasn't entirely sure she wanted to put a name to it. Maybe that was for the best. Ariel would be graduating at the end of the term, after all, and Calliope had no intention of making things unnecessarily complicated when there was a perfectly good broom, an entire pitch waiting, and a whole term ahead still to occupy her attention.

Something for future Calliope to think about.

Calliope's attention shifted toward the rather conspicuous trunk in the center of the pitch, followed by the baskets suspended overhead and tried not to outwardly groan at yet another professor's theatrics. Ugh, whatever. It was alway something with these Hogwarts professors.

At the sharp blast of Cloggs' whistle, Calliope rolled her shoulders and the instant her feet left the grass, the rest of the world seemed to fall neatly into place. The sixth year rose into the clear blue air, first climbing before tipping into a smooth descent, then banking sharply into a tight turn. She accelerated across the pitch, wind catching at her whisps, sending her ponytail into a frenzy, and pulling the corners of her mouth an ebullient, most satisfied smile before she eased back on the handle and brought herself down into a controlled glide as she rounded the curve of the pitch.

Default Ariel Scamander, Gryffindor (Chaser)
Bathes in Maple Syrup | Dancing Lobster | Moy Pomidor | Seneca's Beard | That Is So Fetch!

Her broom rested across one shoulder as she approached the others, brown eyes sweeping briefly over the strange collection of baskets overhead and the enormous trunk planted conspicuously in the middle of the pitch. Interesting.

More interesting was the familiar brunette already among the gathered students. Ariel's gaze lingered on the Slytherin for approximately half a second longer than necessary before she carried on as though she hadn't noticed her at all.

At Cloggs' instruction, Ariel lowered her broom onto the grass beside her and began stretching properly. She rolled her shoulders backward, then forward, before reaching one arm across her chest and hooking the other around it for a few seconds on one side before switching to the other. Then she bent at the waist until her fingertips brushed the grass, straightened, and pulled one foot behind her until her heel nearly touched the back of her thigh.

Once her limbs were accounted for, Ariel kicked off and climbed quickly, letting the broom carry her upward before leaning forward and accelerating gradually. The wind immediately caught her hair and pulled it away from her face as she crossed the pitch.

Ariel tipped the broom sharply and swept into a wide turn, descending as she came around before pulling upward again. Another climb followed, steeper this time, and then a sudden drop that sent her stomach pleasantly upward before she levelled herself several feet above the grass. The movement was easy and controlled, not to mention incredibly boring.

Cloggs had told them to enjoy themselves, so Ariel pulled back hard on the handle. The broom shot upward, nearly vertical, before Ariel threw her weight sideways and launched into her signature Dizzy Dragon. One rotation became two, then three as broom and rider corkscrewed tightly through the air, Ariel's red hair whipping around her face while the sky and pitch blurred together around her. She tightened the spiral for another rotation before breaking cleanly from it and snapping her broom level again.

Her eyes found Calliope almost immediately afterward—entirely coincidentally, of course.

Angling toward her, she approached from behind and slightly above. Rather than simply passing her, however, the Gryffindor tipped her broom and slipped smoothly beneath Calliope's flight path. For a brief moment she disappeared underneath her before banking upward on Calliope's opposite side.

"This is you warming up?" she asked innocently. As her broom drifted closer by another few inches, the redhead flashed her a grin as they glided beside each other.

Default Angel (Slytherin) (S) :: Xelene (Gryffindor) (B)
That's Rough Buddy | Be the Flower | Moon & Stars

Angel was pumped and ready for tryouts. He’d been anticipating this day for a while. So much so, that he already took the time to warm up.

Grabbing one of the broomsticks provided for them, the first year joined the group that was forming. He took to the skies not as smoothly as he would have liked. Having a top of the line broom at home—one he trusted—was not the same as the ones here. He was getting used to them, but he was a creature of habit, and every time he wanted to kick off in his usual manner.

It was okay, though. What mattered was that he was working on getting used to these brooms. He had no other option, but to adapt.

While performing some of the warm-up drills, Angel caught sight of a brunette below. He smirked at her when she glanced up in his direction. His cousin was late. He won their bet.

He didn't linger much, though. Angel focused on his turns and acceleration. He was a fan of flying fast and pushing the limits, and now on this new broom he wanted to get acclimated the best he could. He hit the gas, speeding past a few players, then came to a halt—almost as if he'd been chasing the golden snitch, but coming to a stop when it disappears from view. Then he pretended to having spotted it again and accelerated once more.

The more drills he practiced, the more comfortable he felt on the school broom. He then moved onto ascending and descending, which now felt better.

Xelene was not happy to see Angel already up and about. To her defense she was still struggling with doing her hair. She was used to her mum doing all the pretty styles and now that she was on her own, she couldn’t recreate them. So she opted for a simple yet cute style: half up ponytail and half her hair down.

She poked her tongue out at him and grabbed a broom. How amazing and fun would it be if she and Angel made their respective teams and went head to head? She was crossing her fingers and toes for that to come true.

Mounting the broom with ease, she took off flawlessly. She could tell Angel was jealous about that. She’s been flying since she was a baby (under her mum’s care, of course). And she’s tried out many brooms. She wasn’t picky.

Ignoring her cousin, she started on the warm-ups. She needed to perform her best! Seeing as her goal was to become beater, Xelene weaved through a few of the students there—making sure not to disrupt them—and practiced her focus. She could be easily distracted sometimes, but when it came to quidditch is was as a different form of herself took over. She had sharp moves and an unforgiving arm when her hand held a beaters bat.

Don't let her innocent looks fool you.

Diego was walking with Viano, Diallo was around somewhere as he walked in with his broom. "Looks like good conditions today." He commented. Vi seemed a little distracted and he was too for a different reason it looked like. Vi's eyes were on a certain Ravenclaw while he eyed the stands for Zen cheering them on.

Once he arrived, he did a few curls and stretches before mounting his broom. He up for defending, whether it was the goals for Keeper or his own teammates as Beater.

Yep, Diallo was here! He may have not made the team last year when he tried out, but he hoped to make it this year. He trained really hard and everything, even if he had to be benched. Whatever it takes, right? Now he wanted to be a Beater, having his own bat to twirl. Goggles rested over his curls, while he surveyed the area.

Cloggs he thought was pretty cool, and not just from the literal chill he gave passing through them. Waiting for the go ahead, he prepped himself mentally for the flying ahead.

Connor was feeling good about trying out again this year. He managed to even convince his friend to try out as well, even if they were on opposing teams. They knew the separate game from feelings, right? Well, some people seemed to have issues with that.

Connor pointedly avoided the gaze of another player, although he couldn't deny what felt like a shiver through his skin. Professor Cloggs chill was nearby, wasn't it? He told himself that before his eyes briefly caught the glimpse of a smirk-Nope. Not today.

Mounting his broom, he took off as soon as Cloggs gave them the go ahead. Focus now, think later.

You know, there was some mighty cool reasons to join the Quidditch team. His best friend playing? Sure, that... would be one. But the time off from classes for practice, certain girls looking their way, the cool jersey robes they were allowed to wear? Just a few of the perks. Oh, but he did like the sport. Otherwise, he wouldn't have made it down to the pitch.

Falcon's locs were tied in an updo today. He smirked at Connor's obvious behavior of trying not to be affected. "Right, here we go." He knew how valuable stretching was before flying off. Making sure his legs and arms wouldn't have any knicks beforehand.

*sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO!

Marina had been looking forward to tryouts.

That was probably why she had chosen to ignore the cold.

It wasn't a real cold, anyway. At least that was what she had told herself when she woke up with a scratchy throat and a nose that had apparently developed a personal vendetta against her. It was just a sniffle. Nothing that was going to stop her from getting on a broom.

Unfortunately, her nose had apparently not been consulted.

By the time Cloggs blew his whistle, Marina had already sneezed twice.

She wiped at her nose with the back of her hand, sniffed, and looked down at her broom with the faint suspicion of someone wondering whether it had any idea what she was about to put it through.

“Okay,” she said to herself. “We can do this.”

She mounted and kicked off with the others, immediately feeling better once her feet left the ground. Flying still felt like flying. Familiar. Easy enough to settle into. She climbed, dipped, turned, then accelerated across the pitch before slowing again, following Cloggs' instructions. Her movements weren't quite as crisp as she wanted them to be, but she could blame that on the cold.

Probably.

Another sneeze caught her halfway through a turn.

Marina's eyes squeezed shut for half a second, one hand tightening around the broom as she fought through it. She managed to correct herself before drifting too far off course, but when she opened her eyes again, she gave the broom an offended look.

Still, she pushed on, determined not to let a blocked nose and watery eyes ruin the morning. Keeper was still the position she wanted. She liked the feeling of guarding the hoops, of having something concrete to focus on, and she had spent enough time flying to know she was capable of it. And Zinnia Shacklebolt's training had built her confidence further. She just needed her body to cooperate.

Which, judging by the next sneeze, was proving to be an unreasonable request.

Marina sniffed miserably and pulled her sleeve over her hand before rubbing at her nose again. When the proper drills began, she squared her shoulders and gripped her broom tighter. She might have been slightly congested, slightly sleep-deprived, and one sneeze away from launching herself in an entirely unintended direction, but she was still here.

And she was going to try.

Calliope's brows lifted as Ariel swept beneath her, the brunette's mouth curling into a slow, knowing smile as the Gryffindor emerged at her other side. She had, of course, noticed the approach long before she made herself known ― Calliope would be a rather poor chaser if she hadn't been acutely aware of her surroundings, charting the airspace with nautical precision..

Her gaze flicked briefly over Ariel before settling on her eyes, grip tightening on the handle of her broom by a fraction as she leaned forward in an unspoken challenge.

"If I didn't know any better, I'd think you were flirting with me, Scamander, she mused, eyelashes fluttering with saccharine enthusiasm. Calliope eased her broom a little closer, letting the space between them narrow until their shoulders were nearly level. If Cloggs wasn't such a stick in the mud, she would have been tempted to nudge the other girl's broom with her toe ― just because she could.

Besides, Ariel knew perfectly well what warming up looked like for this brunette.

"Hoping for a better demonstration?" she hummed, leaning a fraction closer and holding that position for a breath before her smile turned wicked and she shot away in a sudden, sweeping climb. At the peak, she rolled cleanly onto her side and dropped into a tight corkscrew, spiralling downward for several rotations before breaking sharply out of it with a grunt. She skimmed low over the grass for several heavy thumps of her racing heart before sending herself into another steep ascent, twisting neatly through the air before levelling out with a smug little glance over her shoulder to see if her rival Ariel was watching or, better yet, following.

┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ❁ ❁ ❁ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈

CJ had been halfway through a particularly enthusiastic round of squats when Cloggs' whistle sent its sharp note across the pitch. Say less, ghost dude!

Legs nearly tangling themselves in the bristles of his broom as he leapt onto it, the Gryffindor zipped straight up into the sky in a near 90 degree climb before leveling out with a sharp pull on the handle for a classic seeker stop.

His gaze swept across the pitch, automatically cataloguing the familiar faces of his teammates that he hadn't totally clocked earlier ― squats and lunges were distracting.

TM (aka Viano aka Thanatos-Misra aka Trademark) was already up there somewhere. Between the long hair and the carefully chosen hair accessories, the seventh year practically demanded branding. CJ had told him as much. Several times. Diego was another easy spot to find. Brick Wall. Sometimes the other team just had to accept that the sky around Diego was closed for business and go get a sandwich instead. And then there was Ariel. CJ's eyes lingered for half a second longer than necessary before he abruptly decided the sky over THERE was very interesting. Ariel's confidence occasionally reminded him so much of his mother that it had become deeply weird, and CJ had decided there were some psychological doors best left firmly closed.

Big yikes.

"WOOOOOO! LET'S GOOOO!" he whooped toward the other flyers, throwing one hand briefly off his broom in encouragement before immediately remembering Cloggs' whole speech about controlled flying. Shame those concepts were not entirely a part of his vocabulary.

Fun though, THAT he could do.

"Hey hey, lookin' good, Xelene!"

Then his attention caught on another familiar figure and his expression shifted as he watched the blonde. She was flying well enough — obviously — but something about her looked...off. Her shoulders were a little too tense, her movements not quite as clean as he'd seen them before, and then she sneezed.

CJ winced in sympathy. Another sneeze.

"Oh, dude."

He angled his broom toward her without really thinking about it, slowing until he was flying roughly alongside her rather than cutting across her path or looping around her like a planet did the sun ― minus 100 out of 10, do not recommend you do with this one. Goblets were the only thing she was good at throwing.

"Hey, Marin—" He caught himself and his mouth snapped shut with a tiiiiiiiiiny, visible moment of concentration tugging his lips tight. "Marina."

He gave her a sideways glance, concern quickly buried beneath the usual crooked grin. The SYNERGY had been awesome, and CJ had spent enough time around her by now to know that this wasn't quite her normal flying. More importantly, he'd gotten invested in her liking him back as a teammate AND keeping his 'days since last goblet to the face' at 0.

He'd only called her Marinara, what, a handful of times lately? That was practically a medical breakthrough.

He shifted his weight, keeping his broom steady beside hers.

"My mom has this thing she makes whenever anybody gets sick or during the winter solstice when it's freezing. It's like—" He waved one hand vaguely, searching for the words. "Chicken soup, but with this weird ginger-honey-lemon-whatever situation, and it flushes the sickness right out of you just like THAT." His expression became increasingly solemn, as though he were passing down an ancient family secret. "She makes me drink it every time I get sick and I always felt better afterward, so, y'know. Science."

CJ nodded firmly, having somehow arrived at the conclusion that this was sound medical reasoning. Maybe he had a career as a healer? Hmmm...

"I can make it for you after tryouts if you want. Worst case, you still have a cold but you get warm soup. That's basically a win-win."

Or try to make it, rather. He hadn't actually ever made it himself but...it was just stuff thrown into water. How hard could it be? He was, remarkably, gifted at Potions, SO...

"Just don't sneeze in my face in the meanwhile, yeah? You can anyone from any of the other houses though. Biological warfare and stuff."

The slow smile spreading across Calliope's face was enough to tell Ariel that her little maneuver had been received exactly as intended. Not that there had been any particular intention behind it, obviously. She had simply needed to get from one side of Calliope to the other, and beneath her had happened to be the most efficient route.

Her own eyebrows lifted at the accusation. "Would that be such a bad thing, Barrington?" Ariel returned, matching the brunette's tone.

As Calliope edged closer, Ariel didn't give up an inch. If anything, she shifted subtly toward her, allowing the space between their shoulders to shrink until there was hardly any at all. Brown eyes dipped briefly toward Calliope's hand on the broom before returning to her face.

"I wouldn't say no to a demonstration."

The words had barely left Ariel's mouth before Calliope was gone.

Ariel's head tipped back as she watched the brunette shoot upward, eyes tracking her through the roll and then the tight corkscrew downward. The redhead slowed her own broom almost to a hover, apparently content to give Calliope the audience she'd asked for. Ariel's grin widened.

Then came that glance over Calliope's shoulder.

Oh. Definitely an invitation.

Ariel flattened herself over her broom and accelerated. The constant rush of dry air threatened to desiccate her lips, but Ariel hardly noticed. The gap between them vanished rapidly. Rather than simply pulling alongside Calliope, Ariel swept upward until she was several feet above her, then rolled smoothly upside down. For several seconds she matched Calliope's path from above, red hair hanging toward the pitch while she craned her head just enough to look down at her.

"Is that all the demonstration I get?"

After yet another very successful summer on Ireland's U-17 team, Zephyr was more than eager for tryouts to begin once again at Hogwarts.

A few warm-up stretches, and then he was off, mounting his broom and kicking himself into the sky. He zoomed onward and upward, smiling as the wind whistled past him, falling into the rhythm of flight as easily as a fish took to water.

He guided his broom to the perimeter of the pitch, having decided that a lap would be a good way to start off. He raced forward, ascending and descending at various points throughout, sometimes to dodge other fliers, sometimes just for the heck of it. All part of the warm-up.

Zephyr slowed after he passed his starting point then veered sharply toward the center of the pitch, as if he'd spotted the snitch. His speed picked up, the other side of the pitch rapidly approaching. Then he abruptly pulled up, shooting upwards for several meters before pushing sideways and twisting into a roll, slowing once he was sitting upright once more.

"Enjoy it," Cloggs had said. Zephyr couldn't imagine not.

---

Eager didn't begin to describe Hugo's feelings about Quidditch tryouts.

He was SO ready to prove himself. After training extra hard over the summer, he was more determined than ever to not just make the team, but actually be a starting player. Reserve was better than nothing - sorta - but after two years of it at Beauxbatons, he wanted to show that he had what it took. He'd promised it to his dad and everything. Whether his dad believed him, Hugo wasn't sure, but it was even more reason to work hard and make him proud.

He did some stretches, and once the whistle was blown, he quickly mounted his broom and rose into the air.

Hugo flew aimlessly for a few seconds, debating in his head which warm-ups to go for first, before deciding to practice his speed control.

He guided his broom up, picking up speed as he continued to rise higher, higher, higher - then he pulled back. The abruptness of the slow down was a little wobbly, but it worked. He repeated this several times, alternating between rising up and pointing toward the ground - though, uh, he didn't increase his speed quite as much as when he rose upward. But he could feel himself improving, growing steadier and more in control each time.

His expression was serious throughout, focused as he was, but there was a sparkle of joy in his blue eyes too. Quidditch was serious business, but it was fun too.

Swedishfish Girl! ❄ Page-Turning Seamstress ❄ Jess's Soul Sister! Sweetest Swede!

Iris was brimming with excitement, and a healthy dose of anticipation as she entered the pitch for tryouts her new broom in hand, a gift from her elder brother JT. She quickly took note of the large trunk in the center as well as the hovering baskets. Probably something they'd encounter later in the tryout, she mused to herself. Iris was dressed in clothes for smooth flight, and her blonde hair was braided back into a single braid as she stood near the others as Professor Cloggs took tone. Iris got to work on stretching her body from head to toe quickly, giving her shoulders and fingers an extra few seconds of rolling, and flexing.

At the whistle Iris mounted her broom, and kicked off into the air, a smile forming on her lips instantly as she felt the wind in her face. This was her dream! Pulling down her flight goggles, Iris concentrated, and started to ascend up in the air, ascending down when she got to the other side of the pitch, turning and then accelarating across the pitch to avoid other fliers, and even banked, and made some sharp turns to see how her broom moved with her instructions. Iris kept flying through the moves ascending, descending, turning, accelarating and so on while she waited for Professor Cloggs next orders. This was also a time when she could make note of which snakes were there and who wasn't. Seeing hotstuff Falcon, Hugo, Calliope, Diallo, and Angel made her certain that they'd get a good team this year.

Tiana entered the quidditch pitch with her broom in hand just as Professor Cloggs began talking, out of breath, and with her hair and clothes in some dissarray. A last minute bathroom visit, and run in with moaning myrtle was never ideal before any event or class. Trying to calm down her racing pulse Tee did her best to braid her long black hair into a crown, and put her clothes in order before begining with the stretching excercises near some other lions. She was glad that her brother, Connor was standing a few feet away. His closeness helped her focus, and make her concentrate on the goal of making the gryffindor team this year as a starting player, and not just a reserve. Tiana wanted to prove that she was good enough. She had trained extra hard this summer, and that had to count for something right?

Standing a bit too close to Professor Clogg'ses whistle when it blew off made it ring in Tiana's ears as she mounted, and kicked off into the air. First she climbed upwards using the ascent to get a good view of the pitch, and the other fliers, but mostly the lions. CJ and Marina were both there as expected as well as Ariel, Diego, Xelene, and Viano. Turning her broom smoothly Tiana leaned over the handle as she started the descent, her eyes watering as she did so, clouding her vision even if there was no wind to speak of. She swerved abruptly to avoid colliding with an incoming flier before accelarating toward the other side of the pitch to get away. Braving lifting one hand off the handle to wipe the water out of her eyes she remembered where she had left her goggles, unfortunatley they were still in the loo. Could someone have an extra pair perhaps? Unsure who to ask Tiana kept going through the controlled flight motions; ascending, turning, descending and accelarating as she flew up and down, and across the pitch.

Default Angel (Slytherin - S) :: Xelene (Gryffindor - B)
That's Rough Buddy | Be the Flower | Moon & Stars

Angel wasn’t a fan of warm-ups, but he still pushed himself to keep on task. He enjoyed playing the actual sport—having structure and following whatever gameplan was set for the game. His former coach had once pulled him aside and explained that the warm-up was just as important as the game. If his body wasn’t ready, then he wouldn’t get the results he wanted.

From then on the Slytherin made sure to appreciate warm-ups more and put in effort.

After practicing ascending and descending, he moved on to weaving through other students. A seeker must be fast, but also smart and know when to get in and out of a crowd of players, and he was good at that. In soccer, his teammates would call him Flash for how swift he was on the field. Sure, that was played on the ground, but it was his mind calculating the routes he was to take. Having fast legs was nothing if the player wasn’t game smart. Same with Quidditch, a fast broomstick was nothing if you didn’t know how to read the game.

Muscles feeling less on the stiff side and more loose, Xelene kicked it into gear. She nearly flattened herself on the broom on a dive, gaining speed as she dived. She imagined her long hair blowing back like the endtail of a comet. Apart from the imagery in her mind, she loved the feeling of cutting through the air, the exhilarating feeling in her tummy. Before plastering herself on the ground, she raised her body—using her core muscles—and pulled up on the broom handle. It listened to her and she was on the way back up.

Xelene giggled to herself at how awesome that felt and how amazing it must have looked. Her mum once said that out of all of her children, Xelene was the most fearless. Sure, she needed more direction on tactics, but she was never afraid of changing her ways for the sake of the game. She’d do whatever it takes to win.

On her way up, she heard her name and beamed in response. “Hiiiiii, CJ!” She sing-songed.

Reminding herself to keep focused, Xelene reached a point above the field and hovered. Letting go with the right hand, she rolled her shoulder—activating her lateral and rear deltoids. It was important for a beater to have those muscles warmed up and ready to. When she was done with that side, she switched to the left.

Default apologies, site issues were more persistent than a bored Peeves

Cloggs gave another sharp trio of blasts of his whistle, waiting until the last few students had drifted back toward the center of the pitch before floating a little higher into the air.

"No need to dismount. Hover where you are," he shouted, his gaze flicking briefly toward the large trunk sitting in the middle of the pitch and then the baskets overhead. "Now, we get to the reason you were so carefully told to ignore that."

With a not-so-subtle cough, the dozen wicker baskets suspended around the pitch began to glow. Half shifted into a bright orange, while the remaining baskets took on a vivid teal.

"Your objective is quite simple," he continued, nodding toward the trunk. "When this trunk opens, a rather ridiculous number of enchanted Hogwarts crests will be released across the pitch. Each one has been given a pair of wings and, I assure you, a rather enthusiastic desire to remain uncaught." A grin tugged at the corner of his translucent mouth. "Your task is to catch them. Once you've got one, the crest will change color to either orange or teal, you are to get it into a basket belonging to that color. Orange crests into orange baskets. Teal into teal. Simple enough."

He paused, turning his whistle between his fingers.

"Except, of course, for the fact that the crests are not particularly interested in being caught," he hummed, arms folding across his chest again. "They will fly, turn, climb, dive, and generally make themselves inconvenient. And should you successfully get one into a basket, do not assume your work is finished. After a few minutes of confinement, the crests may just decide they have had quite enough of sitting politely in a wicker basket and attempt to escape. So keep an eye on them. A successful catch followed by an immediate escape is still, technically speaking, an unsuccessful catch."

He drifted lower, angling himself towards the trunk and rolled his shoulders, his eyes sweeping over the students.

"And should you manage to have every last crest safely contained by the end of tryouts… splendor awaits you."

He kicked one leg forward, his ghostly boot passing straight through the trunk before emerging from the other side. A moment later, there came a loud, satisfying click as the locks released.

"And—"

The lid flew upward.

"Catch."
OOC: Apologies for the delay! The site issues have been making things a little difficult, so thank you for your patience.

You are free to RP outcomes for the crests and do not need to wait for Cloggs nor The Narrator to pop in with guidance ― though they may do so anyway

You now have until September 25 to participate in the tryout and submit your questionnaire(s) for any characters you would like to be considered for the team.

As always, please make sure to check the first post of this thread for all the tryout details and questionnaire information!

Vi was not surprised to see how many students had showed up for tryouts, even the number of firsties and second years which included a Gryffindor, Xelene {and hey, Tiana!}. The latter always made him happier to see since he thought it was wonderful that the younger ones could possibly develop their love for the sport early. A few of those might even end up being signed for his old U-17 team. Anyway. Di was one hundred percent right: conditions were good today. Maybe even better in his eyes because of that particular Ravenclaw who… was definitely playing hard to get. Which was fine with Vi since it presented an interesting challenge for him. Despite that, if Connor didn’t come around, the Gryffindor would end up getting bored of the chase. Just because he was trying out for a Chaser position, it didn’t mean he’d be one forever when it came to Connor.

The seventh year’s smirk had grown wider once he caught him sneaking a look but of course there would be plenty of time to continue the flirting. For now, he stuck close to Di as they warmed up in the air; he was sure Falcon would do the same with Connor. Falcon always gave off the ‘protective’ sort of vibes.

Soon enough, the shrill of the whistle signalled that warm up time was over. Vi headed back to the center of the pitch, awaiting the next instructions. Hovering there, an eyebrow arched lazily as the cough set the baskets glowing either orange or teal. And were they all trying out for Seeker positions? At least this was the first thought that popped into the seventh year’s head when he heard about the crests. The instructions were quite clear enough except this time the entire lot of hopefuls were expected to work as a unit by ensuring the crests stay in the baskets? That was fine with him!

“We got this,” he calmly told Diego though he did also glance in the direction of that Ravenclaw too. As a matter of fact, he knew that everyone who tried out last year was capable. With that, Vi honed in on one of the escaping crests. Target acquired! But good gosh… the things were FAST! That hardly mattered though… not when the Gryffindor was already off, weaving between his Schoolmates, eyes on the prize. Maybe it was a good thing he voluntarily wore the headband to tame his long-ish hair because man! This challenge was intense! The crest had him zooming up the pitch, down the pitch, climbing rapidly in altitude, descending so that he felt like he was freefalling… but!

“Gotcha!”

One hand stretched and enclosed around the crest. F.I.N.A.L.L.Y!

The object in his hand struggled to escape but Viano held onto it, much like he would hold onto the Quaffle or Snitch. Since the crest had changed to bright orange, he dumped it into one of the baskets of that colour. Would it stay?

Ugh!

Ruuude!

Was the bestie ignoring him? Nah, Levi knew better. He just chalked it up to Dee being immensely focused on the tryouts. Still, that didn’t stop the Hufflepuff from manoeuvring his broom parallel to Dee’s. “Did you forget about my pretty face?’’ he joked. “Only joking. And I know you’ll do great with the tryout, Dee!”

The fourth year had a delightful time warming up, because hey, when you loved Quidditch as much as he did, he always had a great time. All too soon that was over as Cloggs was giving them another round of instructions. Okay, so that wasn’t much up his Keeper-hopeful alley. But that was more than okay! Levi was already making up his mind to catch at least five crests by the time the tryouts ended.

“Do you think we’re allowed to work as a team?” he asked Dee, amidst all the fluttering of wings. “I mean, you and I do well together.” Just a thought, and absolutely no pressure!

Iris circled back to the center of the pitch to hover on her broom a few feet above ground as Professor Cloggs gave them new tryout instructions. They were all hunting winged crests, catching them, and putting them back in the right colored baskets. So they were all seekers now for this part of tryout? Was it every flier for themselves or were they supposed to team up to have a better chance at catching the crests, and making them stay in the baskets? She glanced over at Falcon to ask him to team up but there was no time.

The crests were released into the air and Iris picked one winged crest out of the mass, and began her hunt for it. She accelarated forward to be on it's tail, criss crossing up and down the pitch to catch up, circling around others fliers as she did so. She was just about to extend her hand, and grab the crest when it got an energy boost, and zoomed just out of reach.. "Ugh!" Iris huffed out in frustration. "Nope, I'm not letting you win over me." she muttered to herself as she zoomed after the crest again. This time Iris executed a perfect upside down descent as she grabbed the crest out of the air. Putting it under her arm and securing it there like she would a quaffle Iris straighted up on her broom before flying straight for the vivid teal basket and depositing her catch. Now could the crest stay there?

Tiana flew back to Professor Cloggs's ghostly figure to hear the new instructions for the next portion of the tryout. They were supposed to catch winged crests not pass quaffles, and score goals? Instructions recieved Tiana let them sink in for a few minutes watching how the winged crests moved in the air, looking for weaknesses. The crests seemed fast, playful and evasive. A challenge that Tiana was now ready to take on.

Spotting a crest hovering low to the ground with a damaged wing she quickly zoomed after it, concentrating fully, and leaning over the handle of her broom, Tee reached out, and grabbed the crest that only tried a little to break free. She then tucked the crest that had now turned bright orange close to her chest, holding it there with one arm as she steered her broom toward the right basket. Tossing the crest into the orange basket Tiana turned her broom around, ascending up into the air quickly to find herself a new winged crest to catch. She just knew that the next crest proably wouldn't be as easy to catch. From what she had seen, most crests put up a good fight, and were pretty playful.

Diego needed a moment to figure out what he was looking for. He knew better than to simply chase after the first crest that caught his attention. He smiled at Vi who was likely working the urge to grab a certain Ravenclaw's attention. But he said nothing about it, nodding instead, "That's right." The moment the trunk opened, Diego's eyes followed the sight of the little winged crests scattering across the pitch. They were so fast!

Diego watched the movement of the nearest crest, picking one that was heading toward the outside of the pitch before angling his broom to intercept it. He managed to swat it instead, causing the crest to abruptly change direction. "Oh no!" His eyes followed it for half a second before he quickly adjusted his course.

That was more like it! He powered through, leaning into the turn before reaching out and eventually caught the orange one. He glanced down at the color, his smile growing before turning toward the appropriate basket. One down!

Diallo was already off after one of the crests when Levi's broom came alongside his. Of course he had something to say. "Of course I didn't forget." Diallo called back, eyes never leaving the orange crest darting ahead of him. "And yeah, we do! Just-" He suddenly leaned hard to the side as the crest made a sharp turn. "a little busy!" The words came out between gritted teeth as he pushed his broom after it. He wasn't letting another one get away from him. Not today.

The crest shot upward, and Diallo followed, his curls bouncing beneath his goggles as he climbed after it. "Well, I'm gonna catch six!" he yelled back toward Levi with a grin, because apparently he could talk and chase at the same time. The crest suddenly dipped, forcing Diallo into a sharp descent. He gritted his teeth while adjusting the grip, and swung around after it. He reached out just as the crest twisted away, his fingers closing around empty air.

"Nooo! Get back here!" Diallo's eyes briefly reflected fire before his expression hardened into determination. Nope. He was not giving up. It wasn't just to prove to himself, but his family. His cousin was a natural Quidditch player, and he had to keep up with them. So he kicked his broom forward again, chasing after the orange blur with a stubborn grin.

Connor's attention immediately went to the crests as they scattered across the pitch. Something more important to focus on than the Gryffindor who had already caught him looking during warmups and seemed far too pleased about it. Connor caught Viano's presence from the corner of his eye and immediately looked away. Whatever game he was playing, Connor wasn't going to fall for it. After spending last year's interaction with them, he knew better than to underestimate the Gryffindor or let him get inside his head.

He settled into his broom, watching the crests instead of the players around him. Connor tracked their movements, waiting for one to break away before adjusting his course. One suddenly flew low, and Connor immediately followed descending before it could get too far ahead of him.

When it pulled up sharply, his hand shot out and closed around the teal crest, the corners of his mouth lifting slightly as it fluttered between his fingers.. only for it to slip through. With a short gasp, Connor went right back to following after it. Where was it going now?

Falcon's eyes followed the scattering crests. This was more like it! He relaxed, glancing at Connor, knowing he had other things on his mind. Falcon knew better than to interfere, but that didn't mean he wasn't watching how a certain player interacted with them. If the Gryffindor tried anything funny, well... he'd deal with that later. For now, there were crests to catch.

Falcon kicked his broom forward, choosing one that had broken away from the others. Rather than following it directly, Falcon tilted his broom sideways and dropped into a sharp turn, letting his momentum carry him underneath the crest before pulling up alongside it.

Rolling underneath the crest, "C'mon, little guy." He stretched one hand toward the teal crest as he came alongside, fingers just barely brushing against its wings before it darted away. Falcon blinked after it for a moment, then simply grinned. "Okay. I see how we're playing." He leaned forward and took off after it again.

Default Marina García Massey | Gryffindor | Keeper
*sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO!

For perhaps the first time since she had arrived on the pitch, Marina forgot about her cold long enough to be surprised.

“Marina,” she repeated, glancing sideways at CJ. There was a tiny pause, as though her brain had needed a moment to process the fact that he had actually gotten it right.

So ... she almost smiled.

Almost.

Instead, she gave him a suspicious look that lasted approximately two seconds before another sniffle ruined whatever intimidating effect she had been going for. “I'm fine,” she said, which was immediately undermined by the way she rubbed at her nose with her sleeve. “Mostly.”

The soup suggestion earned a reluctant little laugh. Because she could so easily picture it: CJ attempting to make some sort of medicinal chicken soup and somehow turning it into a Potions accident. And somehow calling her Marinara THRICE in the process.

“That's... surprisingly nice of you,” she admitted. “I'll consider the soup.” She paused before adding: “....But I make no promises about the biological warfare.”

Before the conversation could go any further, Cloggs' instructions drew her attention back toward the centre of the pitch. Marina's expression sharpened as she looked toward the trunk, watching the baskets change colour overhead.

Catching the crests sounded simple enough.

Which, in Marina's experience, usually meant it absolutely wasn't.

The moment the trunk opened, Marina kicked her broom forward, following one of the nearest crests as it shot upward. She leaned into the turn, gaining on it quickly, and for a few seconds everything clicked. Her hand closed around the enchanted crest just as it tried to veer away.

“Yes!”

She immediately redirected toward the nearest teal basket, only for the crest to give a flutter in her hand before it twisted sharply, forcing Marina to adjust her grip as she flew. She managed to keep hold of it, but then her nose prickled, and her eyes began to water.

She knew that feeling.

“Please, not now.”

A sneeze hit her hard enough that she jerked sideways on the broom.

The crest escaped.

Marina stared after it in disbelief, before biting her lip from cursing in the most unlady like manner.

Instead, she ignored the frustration as she did during her entire summer - and accelerated after it.

One thing at a time, she repeated the mantra in her head.

Catch the stupid flying crest.

Get it in the stupid basket.

Try not to sneeze.

Easy.

Upon arrival at the pitch, Teagan had been glad to see her fellow returning candidates, even if she inwardly felt bad for the past few terms when she’d chosen not to try out. Hopefully that wouldn’t count too much against her, and she could slot back in easily. Plus, seeing so many first years amongst the hopefuls made her remember when she had tried out as a first year herself, with barely any exposure to the sport and Professor Adara had seen enough to trust her as a reserve. Seven years later, she was back and hopefully things would be just as positive.

Kicking off from the ground after some light stretching and acknowledgment of Professor Cloggs, she’d given her fellow Slytherins and the others a nod as she flew some circles and tried a few tricks, both ones she remembered from previously and the occasional insert from her other athletic activities, while also trying to stay clear of the baskets suspended in the air with her. It was fascinating to see what tricks she could do on a broomstick that she also could perform on her skateboard.

It was sooner than she’d expected that the professor had blown his whistle again, and she returned to the center of the pitch with the others, listening intently to the explanation given for the next activity. It seemed rather like the crests were acting as a load of snitches, rather, but she figured it couldn’t be too difficult if they worked together. Or not. Either possibility was as valid as the other when it came to the current group of hopefuls. She’d let them come to her if they wanted to team up, be it her housemates or the others.

In the meantime, she let her eyes zero in on a specific crest zipping around near her and let her broom get to speed, switching direction as the crest attempted an evasion. “No you don’t”, she said under her breath, executing a perfect barrel roll to confuse said crest before reaching out and grabbing it. Teal. Okay, she could work with that, given there was a teal basket floating nearby. On her way there, she let her eyes pick out her next target before depositing the first into the basket neatly, swatting it back down as it tried to sneak back out before she got too far away. Inconvenience didn’t really work with her goals after all, and she continued her path toward the second chosen crest once the first fell, stunned, back into the basket.

Time to catch another.

Angel’s attention was glued on the instructor’s ghostly form. His mind took mental notes on the task ahead. They were supposed to catch these flying crests and place them in their respective baskets. It kind of seemed easy to him. It reminded him of a similar task they did this past summer. Then again, the items they used didn’t have wings, so maybe he shouldn’t assume this would be simple.

There was a catch. He knew it! The crests didn’t simply give up and remain in the baskets—they got bored and fled. That sounded more of a challenge and the thought of it excited him.

Shifting his grip on the broomhandle, Angel positioned himself ready and as the lid flew upward, he shot towards it.

Something told him it wasn’t going to be easy, and he was right. He was inches from the basket the moment it opened and somehow the crests managed to evade him. He smirked to himself and zoomed upwards, locking in on a specific target. If he allowed the amount of crests and action going on around him, he’d fail to focus. Pushing forward he reached out a hand, his fingers stretching towards the winged crest.

It was quite the chase until finally his fingers closed over the crest like a claw machine and he immediately guarded the now orange crest to his chest, as if someone would rush him and yank it out of his grip. Dunking it into the orange basket, Angel fist bumped the air and turned to mark his next target.

The crests were sooooo cute! Look at the little wings.

Xelene resisted the urge to coo at them. They were, unfortunately, her next victims. In order to prove her skills she needed to capture as many as possible, and maybe…just maybe, the instructor would let her keep one.

Gears shifting in her head, the Slytherin tied her hair into a ponytail, leaned forward on her broom and picked up her speed. Her crystal gray eyes took in the crests, analyzing the way they moved and the way they behaved around possible capturers. She wondered if they were designed to have a telltale when they were close to being caught. So far, she didn’t notice any.

There was a small cluster of crests flying like a flock of pigeons. Like the little lion she was, Xelene zoomed through them, breaking up the group. In the process, her thin fingers caught a crest. It was a close one, too. She didn’t know if it was possible to hurt their wings, but just in case, she made sure to hold on to the body of the crest.

This was fun and she was going to have dozens of them in the basket in no time. Confidently, she dropped the newly turned orange crest into its respective basket. With a satisfied smile on her face, Xelene was about to go chase after another crest when—

Oh, no it DIDN’T!!!!!!!!!

The crest she had just deposited hopped out of the basket and zoomed off to Merlin knows where. Caught off guard and slightly embarrassed, her cheeks turned a shade of dark pink. She huffed, squeezed her ponytail tight and flew into the direction the crest had gone. She didn’t care if she didn’t catch the same crest, she cared about repairing her wounded pride.

Being the size she was, it gave her the advantage to weave in and out of other students’ paths. Maybe it was wounded pride or years of playing quidditch or both, but Xelene managed to catch another crest. This one turned the color teal and ZOOMED towards its basket. The odds didn’t seem to be in her favor, so she didn’t celebrate when she dumped the crest into the teal basket. She was prepared this time when the crest flew back out of the basket—Xelene PUNCHED it with her fist and huffed. “And stay down!”

Pride redeemed, she let out a breath and resumed her hunting.

Vi figured that Di never mentioned anything - at least not yet, anyway - regarding his sudden interest in Connor because he was unsurprised. Di knew it was in his nature to flirt like it was going out of style. But to Vi, it was more than that; flirting was a distraction from something in particular. As for this activity, it was safe to say the seventh year was having the time of his life with it. “Way to go, Di!” He knew the bestie had it in him to snag as many of those crests as anyone. “Uh oh!” He’d been taking a look at the baskets and the crest Di had just deposited was attempting to make a bid for freedom. “I got it.” Vi grabbed the crest before it exited, wrestling it towards the bottom of the basket. He briefly wondered if using the Freezing Charm would be a good idea. Well, the next time he spotted one trying to escape, he’d try it and see. After all, it wasn't something Cloggs had touched on. “Let’s go grab another. Or two, Di!” Grinning, he turned his broomstick in a completely random direction. Which… turned out to be in Connor’s.

The Gryffindor was just in time to see the crest escape from the Ravenclaw’s grip. He tore after him, quickly pulling alongside in no time. “Thinking about how much you’ll miss me as a Seeker on our U-17 team?” he asked. Laughing quietly, Viano focused his attention on another nearby crest. He may be flirting with Connor but the fact was that this tryout never left his mind. And he knew it was the same for Connor, so as much as Vi wanted to mess with him some more, he also wanted the other boy to make his House team. And since Vi always took Quidditch quite seriously... he was focused on this particular crest that gave him quite the resistance.

Thankfully, years of training both as a Chaser and a Seeker provided him with the experience he needed to weave amongst his schoolmates and other crests. True, he could have even snagged another, but since Vi had already locked in that one… He dodged Teagan, bobbed, ducked under Falcon’s outstretched hand… all of the things, really. Until…

“You’re mine!” With a triumphant punch of the air, he looked keenly around for Di as he headed for an orange - the colour of the crest - basket. How was the bestie faring?

Dee needn’t say any more!

Levi would let the Slytherin do his thing. But catching six crests? Ooh, the bestie just got competitive! “Did I think five? I meant seven!” He stuck his tongue playfully out at Diallo, ready to match that competitiveness and then some. He also liked how the other guy knew exactly what he had been thinking. The Hufflepuff did a little stylish three-sixty degree roll on his broomstick before righting himself.

Right.

He was not training for the ballet. He was trying out for the House team; it was time to get serious.

The instructions were not tenebrous ones so Levi already was after a crest which had just zoomed by him. This was exactly the sort of activity he needed to boost his Seeker training, being the England U-17 reserve Seeker. For now.

The crests crisscrossing the field, the other hopefuls flying across it… it was all sort of chaotic in his mind. What helped was him focusing on that crest that flew around as though it were on an Energy Potion. He almost even collided with another student but being nimble, quickly avoided it by diving. When he resurfaced, the crest was a good distance from him but Levi was persistent. A minute later, it was grabbed causing him to do a little shoulder wiggle/dance. The teal coloured crest was then deposited in one of the corresponding baskets.

Even though it hadn't been that long since she'd been on a broomstick, having spent the summer playing U-17 for Northern Ireland and surprising herself with a great season, Bee had to admit it felt good to be flying. It was going to be another good year, she could feel it. Seeing her fellow Hufflepuff teammate Levi whom she recognized as keeper last year, she offered a friendly wave.

But didn't deliberate too long as she was warming up in her flight loops around the pitch. Before she could go for a third loop, Professor Cloggs was whistling sharply at them. She didn't know that ghosts could whistle, but they talked so she supposed it only made sense they could whistle too.

Hovering, she listening to the next set of instructions, herself on the TEAL team. Catch crests and place it her respective wicker basket. That didn't seem too challenging. She suppressed a smile at Cloggs' need to state that successful catches followed by immediate escapes were technically unsuccessful.

And begin. It didn't take long before she found several crests nearby, but she just wanted to zero in on one right now. Laser-focused, she urged her broom forward into position, performing a variation of the Wollongong Shimmy to help distract some crests, which as a maneuver she had found herself perfecting over the summer with her fellow U-17 chasers who were eager to help each other. Once close enough, Bee brought her broom to a halt, reached out to snag a crest, while still holding onto the broom. It wasn't easy, but she managed and clung tightly as she moved forward towards the teal basket to deposit her first crest.
