More interesting was the familiar brunette already among the gathered students. Ariel's gaze lingered on the Slytherin for approximately half a second longer than necessary before she carried on as though she hadn't noticed her at all.
At Cloggs' instruction, Ariel lowered her broom onto the grass beside her and began stretching properly. She rolled her shoulders backward, then forward, before reaching one arm across her chest and hooking the other around it for a few seconds on one side before switching to the other. Then she bent at the waist until her fingertips brushed the grass, straightened, and pulled one foot behind her until her heel nearly touched the back of her thigh.
Once her limbs were accounted for, Ariel kicked off and climbed quickly, letting the broom carry her upward before leaning forward and accelerating gradually. The wind immediately caught her hair and pulled it away from her face as she crossed the pitch.
Ariel tipped the broom sharply and swept into a wide turn, descending as she came around before pulling upward again. Another climb followed, steeper this time, and then a sudden drop that sent her stomach pleasantly upward before she levelled herself several feet above the grass. The movement was easy and controlled, not to mention incredibly boring.
Cloggs had told them to enjoy themselves, so Ariel pulled back hard on the handle. The broom shot upward, nearly vertical, before Ariel threw her weight sideways and launched into her signature Dizzy Dragon. One rotation became two, then three as broom and rider corkscrewed tightly through the air, Ariel's red hair whipping around her face while the sky and pitch blurred together around her. She tightened the spiral for another rotation before breaking cleanly from it and snapping her broom level again.
Her eyes found Calliope almost immediately afterward—entirely coincidentally, of course.
Angling toward her, she approached from behind and slightly above. Rather than simply passing her, however, the Gryffindor tipped her broom and slipped smoothly beneath Calliope's flight path. For a brief moment she disappeared underneath her before banking upward on Calliope's opposite side.
"This is you warming up?" she asked innocently. As her broom drifted closer by another few inches, the redhead flashed her a grin as they glided beside each other.
Calliope's brows lifted as Ariel swept beneath her, the brunette's mouth curling into a slow, knowing smile as the Gryffindor emerged at her other side. She had, of course, noticed the approach long before she made herself known ― Calliope would be a rather poor chaser if she hadn't been acutely aware of her surroundings, charting the airspace with nautical precision..
Her gaze flicked briefly over Ariel before settling on her eyes, grip tightening on the handle of her broom by a fraction as she leaned forward in an unspoken challenge.
"If I didn't know any better, I'd think you were flirting with me, Scamander, she mused, eyelashes fluttering with saccharine enthusiasm. Calliope eased her broom a little closer, letting the space between them narrow until their shoulders were nearly level. If Cloggs wasn't such a stick in the mud, she would have been tempted to nudge the other girl's broom with her toe ― just because she could.
Besides, Ariel knew perfectly well what warming up looked like for this brunette.
"Hoping for a better demonstration?" she hummed, leaning a fraction closer and holding that position for a breath before her smile turned wicked and she shot away in a sudden, sweeping climb. At the peak, she rolled cleanly onto her side and dropped into a tight corkscrew, spiralling downward for several rotations before breaking sharply out of it with a grunt. She skimmed low over the grass for several heavy thumps of her racing heart before sending herself into another steep ascent, twisting neatly through the air before levelling out with a smug little glance over her shoulder to see if her rival Ariel was watching or, better yet, following. ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ❁ ❁ ❁ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ CJ had been halfway through a particularly enthusiastic round of squats when Cloggs' whistle sent its sharp note across the pitch. Say less, ghost dude!
Legs nearly tangling themselves in the bristles of his broom as he leapt onto it, the Gryffindor zipped straight up into the sky in a near 90 degree climb before leveling out with a sharp pull on the handle for a classic seeker stop.
His gaze swept across the pitch, automatically cataloguing the familiar faces of his teammates that he hadn't totally clocked earlier ― squats and lunges were distracting.
TM (aka Viano aka Thanatos-Misra aka Trademark) was already up there somewhere. Between the long hair and the carefully chosen hair accessories, the seventh year practically demanded branding. CJ had told him as much. Several times. Diego was another easy spot to find. Brick Wall. Sometimes the other team just had to accept that the sky around Diego was closed for business and go get a sandwich instead. And then there was Ariel. CJ's eyes lingered for half a second longer than necessary before he abruptly decided the sky over THERE was very interesting. Ariel's confidence occasionally reminded him so much of his mother that it had become deeply weird, and CJ had decided there were some psychological doors best left firmly closed.
Big yikes. "WOOOOOO! LET'S GOOOO!" he whooped toward the other flyers, throwing one hand briefly off his broom in encouragement before immediately remembering Cloggs' whole speech about controlled flying. Shame those concepts were not entirely a part of his vocabulary.
Fun though, THAT he could do.
"Hey hey, lookin' good, Xelene!"
Then his attention caught on another familiar figure and his expression shifted as he watched the blonde. She was flying well enough — obviously — but something about her looked...off. Her shoulders were a little too tense, her movements not quite as clean as he'd seen them before, and then she sneezed.
CJ winced in sympathy. Another sneeze.
"Oh, dude."
He angled his broom toward her without really thinking about it, slowing until he was flying roughly alongside her rather than cutting across her path or looping around her like a planet did the sun ― minus 100 out of 10, do not recommend you do with this one. Goblets were the only thing she was good at throwing.
"Hey, Marin—" He caught himself and his mouth snapped shut with a tiiiiiiiiiny, visible moment of concentration tugging his lips tight. "Marina."
He gave her a sideways glance, concern quickly buried beneath the usual crooked grin. The SYNERGY had been awesome, and CJ had spent enough time around her by now to know that this wasn't quite her normal flying. More importantly, he'd gotten invested in her liking him back as a teammate AND keeping his 'days since last goblet to the face' at 0.
He'd only called her Marinara, what, a handful of times lately? That was practically a medical breakthrough.
He shifted his weight, keeping his broom steady beside hers.
"My mom has this thing she makes whenever anybody gets sick or during the winter solstice when it's freezing. It's like—" He waved one hand vaguely, searching for the words. "Chicken soup, but with this weird ginger-honey-lemon-whatever situation, and it flushes the sickness right out of you just like THAT." His expression became increasingly solemn, as though he were passing down an ancient family secret. "She makes me drink it every time I get sick and I always felt better afterward, so, y'know. Science."
CJ nodded firmly, having somehow arrived at the conclusion that this was sound medical reasoning. Maybe he had a career as a healer? Hmmm...
"I can make it for you after tryouts if you want. Worst case, you still have a cold but you get warm soup. That's basically a win-win."
Or try to make it, rather. He hadn't actually ever made it himself but...it was just stuff thrown into water. How hard could it be? He was, remarkably, gifted at Potions, SO...
"Just don't sneeze in my face in the meanwhile, yeah? You can anyone from any of the other houses though. Biological warfare and stuff."
