Professor Rae bustled into the empty classroom. She had been in previously to clean it up for the school year, and it took but a moment to clear out cobwebs and dust that had accumulated more recently. Once that was finished, she fished a bit of parchment from the top of her desk and settled into her chair. A sound at the door caused her to wave with the hand not writing. "Come in, come in. Get your supplies ready and we will begin in a moment," she said without looking up.

Curses- unforgivable curses- Crutacius, Avada Kedavra...
Defensive Spells- Expillarmus (sp?), Cofundus...

Kali writes down a couple of notes on her parchment, then raises her hand.

"Bubble-Head Charm could be defensive because it can protect you from dangerous gases in the air. Also Confundus Charm is defensive because it confuses your enemy," she says thinking.

"Wow... I have my work cut out for me to find things you DON'T know about," Professor Rae grinned. "That's 25 for Ravenclaw, 30 for Gryffindor, and 10 for Hufflepuff."

"Why do you think we focus so heavily on defensive spells in this class, rather than learning theory and Dark magic spells?"

"We learn spells and not theory to prepare ourselves and because theory can't really teach you how to get the spell to work" she said with only a hint of questioning in her voice.

so we can learn how to defend ourselves against the dark arts, various creatures as well as wizards and witches who have turned to the dark side

Francis thought about it, and immediately raised her hand. "I think that we focus on defensive spells because it is of foremost importance to learn about how to protect ourselves first, rather than to hurt others. And I believe, that this is illustrated similarly in Hogwarts' mission statement, what our school stands by"

Melissa raises her hand. "Because theory won't nessacarily help us in real life if we can't really perform the actual spell. Also we don't learn Dark Magic because it's only nessacary to learn how to defend ouselves against it."

Raven raised her hand.
"The Class is titled Defense Againts Dark Arts, so on that note we would focus more on defense techniques then fighting back. In the wizarding community knowing how to fight is good but defening and protecting yourself is what keeps you alive," she stated looking at her classmates.

"BY far don't get me wrong we need to aswell learn the basis of dark magic or we will never know how to deal with the situations or how to respond to the foe acton," she declared looking at the professor.

Francis raises her eyebrow, and with a perplexed look, she asks: "Professor, Aren't hexes thought of as dark magic? And don't we learn hexes in Defense Against the Dark Arts?"

"I dont think hexes are all dark, many can be used as a defense mechanism, right professor?" asked Lizzt, trying not to sound obnoxious.

"That's a good question, Francis. There are in fact a variety of curses that aren't considered specifically 'dark' but that do cause harm. As I said before, it is the intention that counts in situations like this. If you are intending to cause great harm, the spell probably pulls on Darker magicks. If, however, you are defending or acting more out of mischief, the magicks are purer and will not harm you. Dark magic IS a bit addictive, so we try not to use it at all. Are there any other questions?"

Raven looked at the students that had their hand down and sighed. She begin to write notes from the lesson and board and contiuned till the lesson contiuned

Francis shoots a friendly smile at Lizzt and waits patiently for the Professor to explain. She had thought hexes would be considered both dark and defensive... Smiling, she starts writing notes on her quill and waiting for an answer.
