Upon first walking into the room, you’d be excused if you did a double take. Afterall, it’s not every day you walk into a potions lab and find yourself looking what’s definitely not a traditional potions lab. In place of the workstations stand counter-style stations like one would find in a cooking class, complete with cooktop stove and a conveniently placed sink. If one were to look in the cabinets, they would find all sorts of ingredients, none of which would give one any sense of what the lesson of the day was to be. At the front of the well-spaced rows of stations stands a single table bearing five clear storage containers, four of which contain lab coats in candy shades of each of the four house colors (candy apple red for Gryffindor, lemon yellow for Hufflepuff, blue raspberry for Ravenclaw and green apple for Slytherin) and the final one containing safety goggles. Beside the containers, you’ll find a stack of name tags (yes, the same “Hello, My Name Is” ones from before). Behind the table is a markerboard reading:
Quote:
Welcome! Please take a lab coat in your house color, a pair of goggles, and a nametag and be seated. The seminar will start shortly.
And today’s seminar leader? Gurmeet is standing to the side of the front table, wearing a nametag reading “Dr. Sharma”, a grape-colored lab coat and a welcoming smile (and pretending like she totally hadn’t had the urge to write “Slim Shady” on her nametag, just to see who would get the joke, which was probably no one since it was 2103).
OOC: Hello and welcome to the second potions seminar of the term! Have your character react to the environment, maybe greet Dr. Sharma (don’t worry, she’s not that kind of doctor!) and have a seat. Class will start in around 24 hours from now, give or take.

Valencia watched the demonstration and nodded to herself. Easy enough. She added the water to the press, pouring in a circular motion, careful to cover all the grounds. She then closed the lid tightly and set a timer. Now to just wait.

As they came to the actually making part of the lesson, Ivy was positively amped to get started. She’d made candy before and knew it was as much a science as it was an art. Everything had to be done exactly right or the candy wouldn’t set properly. For once, she felt like she may have actually had a leg up on some of the other kids.
Pulling out the teapot, French press, dropper bottle, coffee, and cream, Ivy arranged everything neatly on her work station. She measured out the water precisely and added it to the teapot, placing it on the stove and turning it on to boil. She measured four teaspoons of the ground coffee into the French press and looked up as the professor asked about the cream. ”Well, I think we’re making the chocolate from scratch, yes? You usually have to have some sort of butter to make chocolate, so are we making butter with the cream?” she suggested.
Moving on after the professor explained it was to offset the capsaicin, Ivy’s tea pot started whistling. She removed it and turned off the cook top, then poured the water into the French press and closed the lid tightly. Checking her watch, she carefully timed out four minutes.
The smell of the coffee brewing reminded her deeply of home. It was a smell she had woken up to nearly every morning of her life...

...... Whoops?
Kiz was sure that if she ignored the mess off water, no one would take notice. So she swiftly moved along to the next step and closed the lid tight and set her timer for four minutes exactly.
Actually, the water was pretty noticeable, at least to Dr, Sharma. It looked like someone hadn't been paying attention when she said to add only two cups of water to the pot (since they only needed one cup and water had this 'weird' tendency to evaporate when heated). It wasn't this that irritated the woman, though. It was the ignoring of the mess. This was the type of thing that could prove dangerous in potions for several different reasons.
"You're going to clean that up, right?" Gurmeet asked in a tone that suggested she should.

"I'm sorry, but we won't be making our frogs from scratch today. It takes much longer than we have allotted for this class to temper the chocolate alone! I have premade ones here that we'll be getting to in a minute." Gurmeet replied kindly. Sooo much longer.
Beeep beeep!
"Now that your coffee is done, you want to open your press and use a spoon to remove the coffee grinds that are floating on top. Once you have them," Gurmeet instructed, demoing what she was talking about as she went, "make sure you've disposed of them and your spoon in the sink. Then close your press and press down on the plunger on top. You'll want to press the plunger a few times. Then, pour the coffee into a Pyrex bowl. You'll be able to find those in your cabinets." Mmmm, that fresh coffee smell. It was making her want a cup.
OOC: Once again thanks for sticking with me! You guys are great!
I'll move us along in about 24-48 hours. We're pretty close to those frogs.

Ashley removed the grinds. Then she closed the press and pressed on the "plunger" a couple times. Gosh, why did they call them plungers? It sounded like they were muggles fixing a toilet. She poured the coffee into the bowl, desperately trying to keep that visual out of her head. It absolutely ruined her appetite. "What's your favorite type of candy? Wizarding or otherwise?" The question for the professor was a welcome distraction for Ashley. In her opinion, candy was just fine without magic. Magic candy usually moved, purposely tasted awful, or had a weird magical side effect. She preferred to just have some regular muggle candy.

Ivy nodded her understanding, though honestly she was a bit disappointed they wouldn’t be making their own chocolate. She liked pouring it in the molds, taking it out, and touching it up so they looked like tiny little sculptures that were very deliciously edible.
But maybe another time!
Following the instructions, carefully skimmed the coffee grounds from the top of the press, leaving behind as much of the actual coffee as possible. She plopped them in her sink then set the spoon down. Closing her press, she stood on her tiptoes to get a better angle and pushed the press down 3 times. Searching under the sink, she found one of the small glass bowls and poured the coffee into it, breathing in deep as she did so. This was much stronger than brewing the coffee in a drip pot, she could tell by the smell.

This Snakette really and truly loved the scent of brewed coffee. How she wished she were back at the Espresso Patronum. Since she wasn’t and was actually in class, there was work to be done. She carefully opened the press then after grabbing a spoon, proceeded to dip out the grinds. This took a while as there were a few stubborn grinds left floating about and seemed to enjoy dodging her spoon. Nevertheless, soon they were all in the sink, as was the spoon.
The press was closed and the plunger used a few times. This was the first time Claudine actually one of these contraptions and was proud of herself as she thought she did well on this attempt. The girl abandoned the press for now to find a pyrex dish. Once located, the coffee was poured into it.
"Now that your coffee is done, you want to open your press and use a spoon to remove the coffee grinds that are floating on top. Once you have them," Gurmeet instructed, demoing what she was talking about as she went, "make sure you've disposed of them and your spoon in the sink. Violet worked and worked to get all the loose grinds floating on the top of her soon-to-be potion--it was hard to get them out, they kept wanting to slide off the spoon at the last minute. But she finally felt she had done a proper job and tipped them all into the waste bin, so she deposited her spoon in the sink, and then came her favorite part--pressing down the plunger! She'd never done that more than once, but the teacher had said to do it a few times, so Violet pushed down three times, because it was a magic number.
Now for the bowl--what was Pyrex? Violet wondered. She rummaged around in her cabinet and pulled out a large round bowl made of some kind of thick-looking glass, but more solid-feeling. "I guess this is a Pyrex bowel, it's the only one in here," Violet said to herself. So--in went the coffee. Merlin, did she want to drink some, but that might ruin her experiment.

Phoebe really thought she might take up drinking coffee after all this careful wafting of the scent. It seemed like a terrible shame to fish the grounds off the top of her press and discard them. DISCARD THEM? Shouldn't they compost them?
The plunger was fun, at least, and Phoebe plunged it more than a few times. Lots and lots of times before rescuing a bowl from the cabinet and pouring off her coffee into it. Oh, it smelled even more strongly in the room now that everyone decanted their coffee. Less warm and pleasant and stronger now. More bitter, and she could taste it in the back of her throat.

She had been paying attention! It wasn't fair. Nine times out of ten, she got the water spell to work, but the counter spell was slightly more temperamental. Sometimes it worked first try, but usually it took Kizzy at least four. Was she going to clean up the mess? "Um," her eyes widened a little in surprise as she looked up to Dr. Sharma standing right in front of her. "Maybe." She answered honestly and gave the potions teacher a cute smile.
There wasn't time to clean now though! She had to keep up with the rest of the class!! Kiz could NOT fall behind. It would only make an even bigger mess of things. Self decided.
She took her sweet time using her spoon to remove the coffee grinds at the top because she wanted hers to be perfect. It was only then that she moved on to the next steps and pressed the lunger a few times.
Ew.
The smell of coffee in the room was very overwhelming. No thanks. Tea for life.

Heath hoped his instructions weren’t too confusing! Just in case, he watched Claudine turn the knob, ready to offer more help if needed… but it wasn’t. “You’re welcome,” he replied, smiling. He turned his attention back to Dr. Sharma as she spoke. Oh, the substance in dairy that cancels out capsaicin was called casein. Those two words sounded a bit similar, to the point that he didn’t trust himself not to get them confused. He had just enough time to jot that bit of information down in his notes before his teapot began whistling.
As per Dr. Sharma’s instructions, he poured the water into the French press and closed the lid. This part wasn’t hard, especially since he’d done it before! His thoughts turned to the first day of the term as he set his timer, the day he made caramellatte for Claudine. The smell of coffee filled the air as he waited, and another memory took its place… a summer day in Diagon Alley, an emotional confession of love… He was so lost in thought that the beeping of the timer startled him slightly. So… now what?
Oh, right. Remove the grounds. Heath opened the French press and carefully scooped out the grounds. After double and triple checking to make sure he got them all, he deposited the spoon in the sink. He closed the press again and pushed the plunger down once, twice, three times. With that step finished, he opened the cabinets to find a pyrex bowl. He set it on the counter in front of him and poured the coffee in, taking care not to spill a single drop. When that was done, he turned his attention to the front of the room, awaiting further instructions.

Serena jumped slightly at the loud beeping sound. Whatever sound on the timer she was expecting, it was most certainly not that! Shaking her head clear of whatever confusion she had; the blonde Slytherin mimicked Dr. Sharma's actions and began scooping off the coffee grinds that had floated on top, tossing them into the sink beside her. She plunged down as instructed, careful to count the number of times Dr. Sharma had did it, and making sure she did the exact same count, before reaching down into her cabinet to look for a what?
A Pyrex Bowl?
She looked around the room and found her other classmates pouring their coffee into clear glass bowls.
Oh! Why couldn't she just call them glass bowls?
Shrugging, she poured the coffee into the clear bowl, wafting in the scent of freshly brewed coffee, and waited for the next step

Valencia skimmed the floating coffee grinds with a spoon as instructed before setting it in the sink. She'd never used a French press before but it didn't seem as hard or as fancy as people made it sound. She pressed down on the plunger a few times, watching the coffee swirl as she did. It was oddly calming to watch.
She then grabbed the bowl and set it down. She carefully poured the coffee into bowl.
