Default Potions Seminar #2 - Gurmeet Sharma

Upon first walking into the room, you’d be excused if you did a double take. Afterall, it’s not every day you walk into a potions lab and find yourself looking what’s definitely not a traditional potions lab. In place of the workstations stand counter-style stations like one would find in a cooking class, complete with cooktop stove and a conveniently placed sink. If one were to look in the cabinets, they would find all sorts of ingredients, none of which would give one any sense of what the lesson of the day was to be. At the front of the well-spaced rows of stations stands a single table bearing five clear storage containers, four of which contain lab coats in candy shades of each of the four house colors (candy apple red for Gryffindor, lemon yellow for Hufflepuff, blue raspberry for Ravenclaw and green apple for Slytherin) and the final one containing safety goggles. Beside the containers, you’ll find a stack of name tags (yes, the same “Hello, My Name Is” ones from before). Behind the table is a markerboard reading:

Quote:
Welcome! Please take a lab coat in your house color, a pair of goggles, and a nametag and be seated. The seminar will start shortly.
And today’s seminar leader? Gurmeet is standing to the side of the front table, wearing a nametag reading “Dr. Sharma”, a grape-colored lab coat and a welcoming smile (and pretending like she totally hadn’t had the urge to write “Slim Shady” on her nametag, just to see who would get the joke, which was probably no one since it was 2103).

OOC: Hello and welcome to the second potions seminar of the term! Have your character react to the environment, maybe greet Dr. Sharma (don’t worry, she’s not that kind of doctor!) and have a seat. Class will start in around 24 hours from now, give or take.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Ashley walked in. Oh no. This looked like a cooking class. Well, best to not assume stuff. She took a nametag and wrote Ashley Fox neatly, clearly, and also really big. Little did the professor know, if slim shady had indeed been written on their nametag, she would have laughed and asked if the professor was the real slim shady. She had a love for old muggle music. She grabbed a pretty blue coat and some goggles(always have the right ppe), nodding at the professor as she did so. "Sup. Nice to meet you." Hopefully this professor would be nice.

Violet headed into the classroom humming under her breath. Yet a second potions seminar, she could not be happier; Violet could not get enough of her favorite class. But upon seeing the room, Violet stopped dead in her tracks and stared--what kind of laboratory was this? It looked like a ... kitchen! Despite her love of brewing, Violet was not all that fond of cooking. Of course, the fact that no one at home, including the cook (especially the cook) would hardly ever let her near the kitchen. Violet hated feeling like she didn't know how to do something. And now it looked like cooking was what they were going to be doing today.

Violet read the board, then went over to get her equipment and had another double-take--what was with these colors? The Slytherin lab coats looked like something out of the 1960s--that fluorescent yellow-green that was so popular in the vintage fashions in London. Did she really have to wear this thing? She glanced around and saw the other House colors looked equally garish, so with a sigh she put on the green coat, grabbed a pair of goggles and a name tag (Merlin, a nametag) and headed to a table--counter? Whatever it was.

"Ooooooooh," Bernadette cooed under her breath, mostly in appreciation of the bright red lab coat she noticed right away. OF COURSE SHE GRABBED ONE and slipped it on, making her way up the front of the room as she did so. She snagged goggles and a nametag too, but didn't put those on.

Instead, she peered carefully at the dude in the purple lab coat. "Doctor Shawarma?" she read his name off. "Are we making candy today?" Because the lab coats looked like the colors of candy, and the equipment looked like the stuff you needed to heat up sugar, so.....

IF THIS WAS A CANDY-MAKING CLASS, BERNADETTE WAS HERE FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Claudine’s face registered surprise the moment she set foot in the room. No workstations? A stove? A sink? This was certainly interesting. Even more interesting were the colours chosen for the respective houses. Apple green for her? Don’t mind if she did. Along with that, she grabbed the required pair of goggles and a name tag.

“Hi,’’ she said. This woman reminded her of the last Gryffindor Head of House; the woman who wore pretty saris to lessons. Professor Sandhu. Sharma was most likely of Indian descent too, yes? “Nice set up you’ve got here.’’ And without further talk, Claudine went off to get herself comfortable.

She, of course, chose a seat furthest from anyone, especially big mouth Grantham. Some of the time was passed by neatly writing her name on the tag.

Ugh. Green lab coat...but not like, a nice green, a green APPLE green. Like. Too bright for Aboli, but she supposed it could be worse. She could be wearing a yellow. Major side-eye to any Hufflepuffs present already.

"Good day, Dr. Sharma," Aboli said as she stuck her nametag to her coat. Aboli Song indeeeeeed. THe lady's coat was a nice purple. It reminded her of floooooowers.

After her first potions seminar went so well, Ivy was pumped for her second one. Now that she had found something at this school she was good at, she wanted to just do it all the time! Skipping into the dungeon, her bag making dull thudding noises across her back as she crossed the threshold, she stopped so abruptly she almost fell over. She laughed in glee. ”Kitchens!!!” she exclaimed.

Rushing to the front, beaming at the instructor, she grabbed a coat, safety goggles, and name tag and picked a station as close to the front as she could. She wrote her name is nice big print. Shrugging on the coat, she attached the name tag. This kind of reminded her of a Muggle cooking competition show. She had begged her mom to let her audition for MasterChef Junior, but her mom said she couldn’t because of the whole magic thing. What if she’d done something on accident and they got it on camera?

Oh well! Maybe she was going to get a chance to show off her cooking skills today!

Valencia entered the classroom curious about what another seminar would be like. "Hello." she greeted politely as she entered. She grabbed a blue labcoat and googles as instructed.

She placed the googles up on her head ready to lower and put on the lab coat as she went to find a station far from certain former friends. She then wrote her name on the nametag and stuck it on. Alright. She was ready.

Oh, see? This was the best. Another class with not-a-professor, which meant another chance to actually learn something for realsies. And it smelled good in here and it was pleasant and those robes were SO PRETTY. Phoebe grabbed up one of the bright red coats, a pair of goggles, and slapped a hastily scrawled nametag on her chest.

"Hello, Dr. Sharma. It's very nice to... are you a Healer too? We made Pepperup with a Healer." Phoebe was sort of keen on the idea of learning all about Healers at the moment, so meeting ANOTHER Healer would be just like kismet.

Walking into the classroom Stella stopped in her tracks doing a double take, wait a second... was she in the right room? Of course she was, she was a seventh year of course she knew this castle like the back of her hand already. Although her eyes lit up happily as she seen the stove and sink. If they were cooking or so, she was down for it, she loved cooking and baking. "Hello, hope you're well." Grabbing a lab coat putting it on with her goggles she walkes to a work station before putting her name on the name tag.

Heath felt much more enthusiastic about attending the second potion seminar, due in no small part to the fact that his mum wasn't teaching this one. He walked into the potions classroom expecting the usual workstations, but instead he saw counters and - was that a cookstove? Were they going to be cooking today? Cooking was sort of similar to potions, right?

Noticing the message on the board, Heath took a blue lab coat and goggles from the storage tubs. Ugh, that color! He wondered if the guest lecturer had something in a darker shade, one that wouldn't make him stick out like a sore thumb, but he thought it might be rude to ask. Instead he greeted the woman with a polite nod of acknowledgment. "Hello, Dr. Sharma."

He beelined for the counter beside Claudine, smiling at her as he approached. "Hi," he said quietly. Pulling out a quill. he wrote his name in flowy dramatic letters and stuck the tag to his lab coat. As he looked around at the color explosion of his classmates' lab coats, the colors strangely reminded him of four characters in a certain musical he knew. Wait a second! Heathers… Candy Store… Were they making candy today? He wasn't sure what that had to do with potions, but it could still be a useful skill to learn. especially with Valentine's Day coming up next month

Avalon raised her eyebrows as she entered the dungeons. Wait, was this the right class? Had she stumbled upon the Kitchens instead? She briefly panicked, wondering if the forgetfulness from last term was returning. But then she noticed her fellow classmates and the message on the board, and she realized that she was indeed in the right place.

She took a bright blue lab coat, a pair of goggles, and a nametag from the front table, greeting the visiting professor with a wave as she did so. "Hello..." Avalon said cheerfully, peering at the woman's nametag, "Dr. Sharma! Nice to meet you." She had to admit that she was very curious (and excited) about the potential for today's lesson. If they really were going to be cooking, that is.

It was kind of confusing have lots of classes with not-professors. Kinsay only minded it a little bit because it always took some time to get used to the different teachers and their teaching styles and... their classroom set ups. Kinsay eyed the room cautiously as she made her way inside. "Hi," she paused for a moment before going to grab a RED lab coat and a name tag (which she wrote her name on REAL small).

Then she took a pair of goggles and made her way over to sit near her sister. She wasn't so sure that she wanted to wear the goggles because they'd look silly, so she kept them on the counter instead. And then she raised her hand because Kinsay had a question.

Naturally.

"Are we making lunch?" And could it be soup?

Luckily for this child, informality didn’t really bother Dr. Sharma. ”Nice to meet you too, Ms. Fox,” she returned the greeting with a nod of her own. And she liked to think she was rather nice.

The shocked reactions were expected. After all, how often does encounter a kitchen in a potions classroom. Another expected thing? The reaction to the labcoats. But there was a method to Gurmeet’s madness. ”Well, hello to you too, Ms. Blackthorne.” Yep, guest lecturer standing right here.

Ruh-roh, was this one a secret Legilimens? Or perhaps a Seer? Or was just really good at deductive reasoning. ”You’re just going to have to wait and see, Ms. Grantham,” she replied with a secretive smile and a wink.

And another unhappy with the colors of the labcoats. Method to her madness, though. ”Hello, Mr. Jones.” Did she mention how polite these students were yet? Because they were. Also, if she known where his thoughts were going right now, she would’ve wondered if he, too, wasn’t secretly a Legilimens….or if she was just that obvious.

”Not exactly.” At least, she hoped they weren’t eating just candy for lunch. Nope, a balanced lunch was just as important as a balanced breakfast. And that included fruits and veggies. Also important? Writing one’s name where the professor could read it….

After waiting a few moments for stragglers, Dr. Sharma shut the door and began the lesson. ”Okay, I’m sure you’re all curious about the way the room is set up today. But before I get to explaining that, I have a few questions.” Gurmeet paused to let any groans and mumbling die down before walking to the board, erasing the previous message and writing the following:

Quote:
2000 BCE Egypt-
1500-400 BCE Mexico-
1692 AD-
~1800s AD Unknown-
1850 AD London-

”Can you guys guess the significance of these dates based on what you think this lecture is about?” All guesses were welcome. She just wanted to see how good these students were with deductive reasoning. Which some she knew to be pretty good already based on the way they entered….

OOC: Class has started! If you haven’t posted yet, please feel free to jump in! Just pretend your character has been here the whole time. We’ll move on in about 24 hours, give or take. For now, have your character take a crack at the significance of those dates!

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine eyed Heath and his lab coat as he approached. “Hi, you. Did you know that colour suits you?’’ He probably didn’t because he didn’t look too pleased. All Claudien knew was that she loved the array of colours in the room. It made a very pretty sight, not to mention a bubbly/happy kind of environment.

Now that the Doctor was getting things started, by writing new things on the board. Claudine was intrigued but was truly baffled as to what it all meant. She’d warrant a guess, anyway. “It’s a timeline,’’ the fourth year volunteered, hand up. “Um… a timeline for… the improvement of…. Cauldrons?’’ Claudine lowered her hand with a shrug. It was worth the guess.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

"It's a timeline. Maybe for some food type or the evolution of a potion." She was happy to guess. This lady didn't seem like a teacher who belittled people when they were wrong. She was impressed that she hadn't been yelled at for informality. It was comforting, and it reminded her of the muggle school that she went to. As for the coats, she didn't mind them. They were cheerful.

Bernadette was positively BOUNCING. The good doctor had WINKED AT HER. THIS MEANT THAT HER CANDY ANSWER HAD TO BE CLOSE!!!!!!! She tried not to stand on her tippy toes and OOOH and AHH too much as she shoved her hand high in the air.

"Are they important dates? For when certain types of CANDY were INVENTED or DISCOVERED? Like... when chocolate was invented in Mexico?" She was pretty sure chocolate came from Mexico. Bernie knew a LOT about candy, y'see, even though she was fourteen now and tried to limit herself to fourteen pieces per day.

"I hope you'll tell us what kind of doctor you are," Phoebe told the good doctor solemnly before turning her attention to adjusting her goggles and fastening her lab coat. It seemed like they might do something with FOOD, which would be kind of amazing, but was it Potions? Like really really Potions?

As for the list on the board, Dr. Sharma was crazy if she thought Phoebe knew anything about History. HoM wasn't one of her best classes, and she certainly didn't read it for fun. But if they had to guess magical events on those dates... "The Salem witch trials happened in 1692, didn't they? So could they be events where the PATRIARCHY got too big for their collective pants and women suffered at their hands?"

Aw, it was too bad that they weren’t making lunch. Felt like ages since they had last eaten. Kizzy’s stomach was sure to grumble unhappily throughout the lesson.

As for the list of dates… Kinsay Cassandra James had no idea. She was good at memorizing, but these ones didn’t ring any bells. This was slightly disheartening, of course, as she liked knowing things and feeling smart. So it did upset her just a little bit that she didn’t have a good answer. But those feelings didn’t last very long because as soon as Phoebe contributed to the discussion, Kinsay’s hand shot up into the air. ”Why did they only accused girls of magic and witchcraft?” That wasn’t fair. Would this lesson be about destroying the patriarchy with potions? Because Kinsay was one hundred percent about it.

.... would they be making poison to kill off the patriarchy and get them back for killing all the witches? That sounded like a good idea. It did render the stovetops useless though. Dr. Gurmeet should've thought about that.

Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Heath smiled. bowing his head so that his hair would hide the flush rising to his cheeks. "No, I had no idea," he replied quietly. "Thank you." Claudine's compliment made him like the color a bit more; it was still too bright for his taste, though. So… now what should he say? "Yours is nice too."

Thankfully the seminar began before he could make things any more awkward! Heath focused his attention at the front of the room as Dr. Sharma spoke, but the dates on the board had him confused. There was only one idea he had to explain those, and it was mad! Between the brightly colored lab coats and the stove, his mind kept going back to candy, but that couldn't be right, could it? Not only was it a weird answer, but someone else (Bernie) had already said it!

Heath's initial instinct was to remain quiet to avoid giving a repetitive or potentially embarrassing answer, but he didn't want to seem inattentive or uncooperative. After all, he'd only met Dr. Sharma a few moments ago; she'd have no way of knowing that his silence came from shyness, not apathy. As he tried to think of something to say, he vaguely recalled reading something about machines used to make candy. He cautiously raised his hand and said, "I also think the dates have to do with candy, maybe not just types but also methods used to make it… like the candy press and revolving steam pans. I'm pretty sure both of those were invented around 1850, which could possibly explain the last date…"

The more he talked, the more disjointed his reasoning sounded to his own ears. If he couldn't make sense if what he was trying to say, he was pretty sure no one else could either! He was just gonna… be quiet now before he humiliated himself any worse.

Ivy stared at the dates on the board and tried to recall anything of significance from either her muggle history classes or history of magic here at Hogwarts, but she couldn’t come up with anything... especially not anything related to food or potions. Deciding to go with something completely different than what anyone else said, she suggested, ”Are they maybe like... like plagues or bad sickness outbreaks?” She definitely wasn’t confident in her answer, especially since the Black Plague wasn’t up there, but it was the only thing she could think of that would have ranges like that that jumped from place to place throughout history.

Serena stared as she rested her elbow on the counter, her cheek placed on her palm and tilted her head to the side. She had been confused since she had entered the room, donned on the apple green coat provided (which she will never admit that she absolutely adored).

This was potions, right? She looked around the room once more - the room looked more like the set of those muggle baking shows mum had taking a liking to after her split with dad, rather than a potions lab; so maybe it had something to do with food?

Her eyes scanned the writing on the board once more. She was absolute trash when it came to dates, so that was a non-starter. But maybe she could make some sense of it based on the countries provided? What did Egypt and Mexico have in common at that time?

"Uhm, Dr. Sharma" She started "Could it have something to do with bread? Like the invention of certain bread recipes?" She guessed. Now that it had come out of her mouth, the idea sounded kind of thick. But it was too late to take it back now.

She briefly entertained the idea of spices too - after all, both Egypt and Mexico started their respective trading ports with neighboring countries through spices, but London was also on that list, and one thing that she had learned since moving back to London was that traditional English food was as bland as its weather.

Violet had been thinking and listening and suddenly she thought she saw a connection. "Dr. Sharma, I think Heath is right. It might have something to do with candy--evidence of the first Egyptian candy was found from 2000--it was made of dates and nuts and honey and spices. And the people living in Mexico between 1500-400 are thought to have first began using cacao then. And candy in Europe became accessible to the masses during the 1800s, and I think they started marketing modern chocolate around 1850. And..." But Violet couldn't think of anything happening in Salem in 1692 AD except the witch trials, and she doubted the Puritans ever allowed themselves anything as fun as candy. "Uh, but the only candy I can think of in Salem in 1692 was the name of one of the slave women who was accused of witchcraft. I saw a bride's cake recipe from back there, but I never heard of their having any candy to eat back then."

Ivy liked the setup for this Potions Seminar a lot. It was a lot different from normal, and that made it interesting! The colorful lab coats were also fun!

She had just finished writing her name on her name tag and sticking it on the blue lab coat she was wearing when the lesson began. And it began...with dates in history.

Merlin, um... Yeah, she had no idea what connection they could have. Memorizing dates was not her strong suit. But she should probably attempt an answer, right?

Buuut everyone else was giving pretty good answers already - even if some seemed like they were probably off topic, they were still interesting! And Violet's answer seemed pretty complete. So what could Ivy possibly contribute at this point?

"If it is about candy," she said, raising her hand, "and the ways it's been made in the past, I guess it's also pretty significant that it's been continually worked on for over thousands of years. It has to be really important to people if they keep looking for new ways to make it and new ingredients to use and stuff like that."

It is a timeline, yes, but not of cauldrons,” Gurmeet replied with a smile. As if she would do something that boring. She didn’t even like using the things, they were so outdated….

”Bingo!” On most of them, anyway. ”The Olmec civilation in central Mexico,” at least, she was pretty sure it was the central part. It was definitely Mexico, though. ”were the first to cultivate the cocoa bean, which is where chocolate comes from. They brewed it into a coffee style drink that we now call hot chocolate.” So, that was where both chocolate and hot chocolate came from. She wrote that beside “1500-400 BCE” on the board.

Welp. She’d be a fool if she said she wasn’t expecting that sort of question. ”It just means that I’ve earned a docorate degree from my respective university.” Which meant that she super-duper versed in potions.

Ms. James here was quite the budding feminist, wasn’t she? Not something that bothered Dr. Sharma at all. ”And you’re on the right track regarding the Salem Witch Trials, but what was happening in the magical world that corresponded with the rise in tensions between magicals and non-magicals?”

”Its actually a complicated issue that’s better suited for your History of Magic professor,” Gurmeet answered, trying to be dimplomatic and keep the class on track. But, it was actually a good question. Just not appropriate for a potions lesson.

Mr. Jones had no need to feel embarrassed, because he was pretty close to the topic. ”Yes, we are talking about candy making methods, but not the macheriny part.” Since witches and wizards were kinda adverse to muggle methods and such (for reasons actually related to another date on the board and one of his classmates’ answers).

Eek, nope. Not really her wheelhouse. ”No. Besides, if it was that, there would be a few dates missing.” Namely, the plague of 430-427 BCE in Athens and the COVID-19 of 2020 AD that was worldwide.

Yep, it was potions, despite the room looking like a cooking class. ”Nope, not bread. Though, baking bread does smell good, no?” Gurmeet liked the smell, anyway. Reminded her of her grandmother’s kitchen.

[b]”Definitely! And it wasn’t always used as a simple sweet treat, either. Its been used as medicine, bribes and even money!”[b] By the Aztecs specifically on that last one.

Was that all? The students had provided great answers, really using their brain power and she couldn’t be prouder. ”Okay, so we have all but two dates covered here, very good answers guys. You might be wondering about these final two dates, though. 1692 is when the International Statue of Wizarding Secrecy was first enacted. It was a response to the rising tensions between magical people and nonmagical people that had resulted in witch hunts all over Europe and the Americas. Now, you might be wondering what this has to do with candy, but I promise it will all make sense in a moment.

1850 was the year that nonmagical folk had their first encounter with wizarding candy. Now, magical folks had been making candy for as long as nonmagical folks. In fact, Honeydukes was first opened in 1641 as an off-the-books operation, selling to both magicals and nonmagicals. But, the enactment of the International Statue of Wizarding Secrecy created what you may call a “cottage industry” of sorts that specialized in “specialty candies”. I’m talking the kind that hop, twirl, floss, ex cetera. The forerunners to the candies that you guys are familiar with today. This was, of course, a sort of act of rebellion by those who had opposed the Statue.

So, back to 1850. One wizard, a Mr. Smith started making the precursors to today’s Chocolate Frogs. These things hopped more than just a few times. In fact, there are records that one of his creations made from his home all the way to Buckingham Palace a few miles away! But that is not the incident in question. In 1850, a nonmagical duke went passed Mr. Smith’s home one day and stopped at his street side stall. The unknowing duke saw Mr. Smith’s chocolate frogs, was impressed by his chocolate work and proceded to buy one of the creations. Once the duke opened the package, the frog jumped at his face, giving the man a heart attack on the spot! Mr. Smith’s house was burned down that night, under “suspicious circumstances” and Mr. Smith and his chocolate frog recipe were lost, except for one scrap of paper with the first two ingredients.

Candymakers and potioneers have been trying to recreate his recipe for centuries, but no one has come close. Where do potions come into this? Well, it was a potion that caused Mr. Smith’s creations to hop so well! It would be considered one of the ultimate achievements of both fields to be able to recreate that potion.”
See, potioneers weren’t all serious and stuffy! There was a fun side, too!

”Now, based on your knowledge of the world, what do you think the two known ingredients of Mr. Smith’s potion are?” After the excellent guesses from her first question, Gurmeet couldn’t wait to hear their thoughts on this one.

OOC: Okay, that was longer than 24 hours. I’m sorry, I had a terrible jaw ache. Feeling better now though! I’ll move us along again in about another 24 hours.
