 Looking for a bit of fun? Well, you've come to the right place! The game corner is where you'll find shelves full of board and card games, both magical and muggle. There's a wizards chess set and a few decks of exploding snap and some magical playing cards. To the right of the corner is a Foosball table modified to simulate a game of Quidditch. Just use your wand to guide the players where you want them to go!
Along the walls you'll see a Pinball machine as well as a Skee Ball machine and a few video games there for your enjoyment. Just like the Foosball table, they are all controlled by magic. Happy playing, and remember: it's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game!

Wizard's chess! This was what Bernie needed to learn. Someone (her brother) had thrown it in her face that she lacked the ability to make good decisions (hilarious, coming from him) and had then resoundingly beaten her in not one, not two, but seven straight games of regular human chess (even though she'd had him in check like at least twice).
Here she was, determined to win, and more or less playing the computer, aka, the black set of pieces which had a mind all of their own. Of course, this was INFINITELY more difficult than regular chess because her pieces, the white ones, didn't trust her, and she had a queen who had a mind of her own and kept INSISTING on going places Bernie wasn't sure she should go. She actually often tried to do the opposite of what Bernie ordered her to do??!? How rude.
So this was what it was like to try to discipline Bernadette, was it. Was she the white queen in her own world??????????!?

Except for the fact that their Head of House gave detentions unfairly, that Emma was put in the OTHER dormitory, and that everyone was loud and some people liked to sing songs. She liked it for all the reasons EXCEPT those. It was also the best to be with Emm and Artemis, just like they had planned. Fifi too, though she did feel the not so great feelings when she thought about how they left Teddy all alone in Ravenclaw. Sometimes she wondered if she shouldn't have convinced the hat to let her go to Gryffindor.
But Kiz tried not to think about it too much because these thoughts made her sad and feeling sad was one of the worst things a person could feel. Kinsay knew because she had plenty of experience. She's 11.
... And practically bursting at the seams with excitement because she had to tell Emmerson something top secret!!! A tell-tale sign of maturity, obviously. She ran into the Common Room and looked around for a good bit, but Emm was nowhere to be found. That's weird. Deciding that she'd just stick around and wait for her friend, she made her way to a corner of the common room. In fact, the very same corner that one Bernadette Grantham was currently occupying. Spying over the older girl's shoulder, Kizzy watched as she struggled with the white queen.
"You're not very good," she commented as if stating the weather. No malicious intent, just facts. Observations. All things Kizzys enjoyed stating.

Bernadette would have, if she could have, literally fought the white queen. She would have shrunk herself down to the size of a castle (aka, a rook) and jumped on the back of a horsie (aka, a knight) and then would have duelled the queen, with her fists and the horsie's sword, into submission.
As it was, she just got checkmate'd YET AGAIN and lost, about to flip over the entire board in frustration. One hand on the bottom of the board, she almoooost started to raise it, when of course some annoying little kid had to pop up at her elbow and spook her. Bernie ended up just jiggling the entire checkerboard and all the pieces on it instead.
Wow, now they hated her even more. Look at 'em and the GLARES they were throwing her way.
"Thanks, Captain Obvious," she turned her head to glare at the little girl. Who was she, a first year? "You're not very tactful." Bernie turned back with a hmmph and began pleading with the pieces now walking off the board entirely. "No no no, don't go! Come on! I'll listen to YOU this time, we'll do things YOUR way! WE WILL! I PROMISE!"

Bernie pointedly ignored her and began picking up the chess pieces and forcing them back onto the board, even while they swung their little fists and bobbed their little heads and one bishop bit her pinky. "Ow ow ow," she cursed under her breath, still ignoring the child. This tactic worked wonderfully on the small brat her in her family, aka, Pippa. Usually she gave up and wandered away to a different destructive task before Bernie finished ignoring her.
The comments about chess, though, and her queen in particular, who appeared to have disappeared off the table... they caught Bernie's attention. Was this kid from a wizard or a Muggle family? Because maybe the wizard kids knew some secrets to THIS game.
"Like what?" she answered curtly, popping her head under the table to see if her queen had somehow made a John McClane-like move, and was hanging out under the table waiting to yell YIPPEE KI YAY---?

Bernie peeked up at the girl, wishing she hadn't grown her fringe out this summer so she could huff and puff and blow it around now. No matter. "Fine, you can play me, and since you know so much, show me how it's done." Bernie bossily pointed to the seat behind the black pieces. "Sit!"

Maybe that's something the older girl ought to work on.

Maybe Bernie needed to try sometime.
Seeing the older Gryffindor copy her pleased Kinsay greatly. What wasn't pleasing, however, was being called 'a first-year' in that sort of demeaning way. Like it meant she wasn't smart enough to do things well. It made her feel really small and this was not a feeling Kinsay liked very much, so she did her best not to think about it.
Which was easy to do when she had other things to focus on. "I know." Did she know? Not exactly, but she did now so it wasn't a lie. Kizzy watched curiously as Bernie directed one of the little pieces a couple of squares over. Hm. She looked down at her own players, tapping her cheek and being real thoughtful. And then she directed the one that looked like a horse to hop over the little pieces so that it could sit in the middle of the board. Because this is how Kinsay-chess worked, obviously.

That knight could move in L-shapes, right? Part of the probelm of this game was having to remember what all the pieces could and could not do.
"You should tell us what to do next," she leaned in to whisper toward the queen/king/bishop/whoever was listening on HER side of things. The queen pointed toward a pawn or two, and sent one of them into battle.
OKAY, COOL. Now her bishop would be free to move around, right?

Bernie stood up too and stretched, eyeballing Lil James like she was just supposed to hang out with her and entertain her. "Like what?" She challenged the girl. "Know any OTHER games we could play?" She wanted to suggest one that required less thinking, but also didn't want to look dumb in front of a FIRST YEAR, so... she'd let the younger girl decide.

"What's wrong, Lil James? You're acting all pouty, like my sister when she's losing. She stops trying and just takes her toys and runs away to cry."
Was Kinsay going to CRY? Over CHESS??!? Bernie walked around to see her face and stare at her properly, her hands on her hips, a small frown on HER face too.

Kinsay turned at the tug of her hair. She meant to give the older girl a pointed look, but she wasn't very good at looking mean and instead it was just the frown from before. It was hard to control how her face got when she was all sad because she didn't have much experience with sad. Sad was an awful thing to feel, so Kinsay James didn't let herself feel it very often.
"I'm not crying." Not yet, anyway. "But my dad says crying is healthy and you're not supposed to hold in your emotions because it's bad for your health." Facts.
She folded her arms across her chest. "You're mean and horrible. And I don't know why Phoebe's your friend." And with that, Lil James turned around and began to walk off. She needed best friend time. Or sister cuddles. Either one. She just needed to be somewhere with someone who actually appreciated her and didn't treat her like she was too little to understand things. That's how Bernie had made her feel. It was an feeling even worse than 'sad'.

Bernie just squinted at Lil James like she was nuts or something. Though truth be told, that quick judgment about Bernie being "mean and horrible"? That kinda hit her in the feels and had even Bernie feeling a bit like she was about to cry. Even though Gryffindors didn't cry; they turned red with their suppressed emotions, like she was doing now. Bernie stomped past Kinsay to block her path.
"I'm neither of those things, and if you think you can just say stuff like that and get away with it, you've got another think coming." Bernie tugged her wand out of her boot and pointed it at Kinsay's face. "Take it back or I'll hex you." She thought Bernie was mean and horrible from what evidence?! Maybe Bernie could GIVE HER something REAL to cry about.

Not that any of this mattered because Kizzy wanted to get as far away from here as possible. To her room, probably. But before she could manage to slip away, she was being blocked by mean Bernie who didn't care that she had been horrible to Kinsay. Kiz wasn't sure if she'd tell Fifi about this, but she would tell Emm. Emmerson would know what to do.
Was Kiz scared of the wand in her face? Yes. Very. Did she show it though? No. Well, at least she tried not to show it. She never really felt as confident as she tried to portray though, so it was hard to tell. She did, however, grow quiet and folded her arms across her chest.
She wasn't going to take it back because that would be lying. Kinsays didn't lie. She also didn't think Bernie would actually hex her... Right? Um.

Kinsay didn't even flinch. She stood there still as a statue! Wasn't breathing or anything. She could hold her breath for a really long time. Just incase Bernie didn't know, she was a first year of many talents. "Well?" Kinsay echoed quietly.
She wasn't going to take back her words because she meant them one hundred and seventy percent. She wasn't even scared of being hexed (read: she was very scared of being hexed)! But if the little Gryffindor took it all back now, she'd just look like a coward. And she wasn't one of those, she was a Gryffindor... Even though she was starting to question that a little bit. Besides, maybe if Bernie did hex her then Pheobe would stop being Bernie's friend. That would be nice seeing as the girl was terrible and mean.
Like Headmaster Trent. They were two peas in a pod.
"Okay. I can wait." Though she sounded confident, she did look worried. That wasn't something she could stop, unfortunately.
