It was bright and early on the morning after the feast. A fresh, 8 am class as the Headmaster had warned just the night before. How many had taken him seriously and sought to get a good night's sleep was yet to be seen but Trent himself had gone to bed at a decent hour and felt...well...great.
The rain had come and gone, the grass was newly watered, the sun was up and offering a bit of warmth in the Scottish country side. It was the perfect set up and left the man more excited to begin the day's lesson.
Hard to believe, but somehow he'd missed teaching over the summer. Missed springing surprises on them and watching them react--quick on their feet or entirely malfunctioning.
Malachi stood facing the lake with his back turned to the castle. He inhaled deeply, enjoying the early morning while he still could. Before they got down to business. The man felt perfectly at peace. A glance down at his watch told him the students would be arriving soon.
Well rested, he hoped. On time, he hoped even more. The absence of a door to drag them out was no guarantee things would be any better.
OOC: Welcome to the first DADA lesson!! Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24-28 hours

Blake had often been around water, he had learned to swim at a very young age, but had also seen several of his friends in childhood come close to a near drowning ... water was a force to be reckoned with.
"Well I think the most obvious is the possbility of drowning. Not knowing how to swim and being around water is rather dangerous." Blake's answering were almost always of the mundane rather than magical answer, you'd think after starting his 3rd year he'd have more magical answers.

The light breeze of the morning felt nice, but Aboli was soon pulling her hair up into a ponytail. It was too irritating to wear down out here, right now. She hadn't even noticed the seventh year before he was speaking, and the sound of his voice made her jump just a BIT. [Ewan]
Wonderful.
She was not skittish, okay? He had just SNUCK UP on her practically. "Oh...yes, I think I am. This seems a whole lot more exciting than homeschool right now....no practical lessons there," she said gently. She was only assuming this was going to be practical. They were outside! She glanced in the boy's direction, very apologetic she didn't remember his name. He was the Ravenclaw prefect, too. She would learn eventually!
But there was Noah, too, and she nodded at the water. "I reckon there's a reason we're by the lake," she whispered in reply.
AND CLASS WAS STARTING. Headmaster Trent had told her to loosen up so she did, letting her hands hang at her sides. Loooosely. His question sparked her to think logically about water. Water wasn't scary to only wizards...it was scary to muggles, too. "Well, especially for people who can't swim, just stepping into the water can be a risk of drowning. Well - not literally stepping in - but you know what I mean." Maybe her answer wasn't the most profound, but she didn't know how to swim SUPER WELL. She was about to tack on something a bit more intelligent, but other people spoke up, so she bit her tongue and listened.
Being intelligent isn't all about showing off in class...it's performing well on examinations and making logical decisions under pressure. She reminded herself.

Was everything alright? Was he really asking her that, he couldn't be that blind to know why she was upset with him, was he? "Fine sir, just as sparkling as a snitch today." Was the a clue for him to possible understand her frustrations at this point. He had found her on multiple terms during the early morning training, so he had to know her final year, all her hopes and dreams went around a certain sport and now those dreams were all crashing down around her.
She went silent as the class began and just stood near and listened. Crossing her arms as she watched the lake her eyes went around as people answered the questions. What could be a problem with water that hadn't been said already? Creatures, drowning, floods, it seemed all there, at least she thought it seemed all there, so maybe she could just stay quiet.
Where was Gunnar when you needed him....
She would mirror him later, for now, she had thought of something, "Hurricanes, they can destroy pretty much anything in their path if they are strong enough."
He couldn’t help but laugh a little as the new Slytherin jumped a little. He hadn’t meant to scare her and the fact that he’d snuck up on her at all when he was so tall was even more comical. ”Uhh..Exciting. Yeah. Hogwarts sure can be really exciting sometimes” he replied, his laugh dying as the headmaster turned to them. ”I’m Ewan by the way” he whispered now so as to not disturb the headmaster.
Ewan had to admit, he was a little relieved that the Headmaster seemed to have let his detention and bhaviour go from last year. He still believed he’d been in the right last year but he did sort of regret how he’d handled his behaviour. Not what he wanted on his permanent record at all.
Focusing on the lesson for today, he let out a small smile as the headmaster mentioned a practical lesson. Having aced his NEWT in DADA, this was always something he’d found came natural to him. Sure, he wasn’t exactly a Mad Eye Moody or a Harry Potter but he enjoyed this subject and that alone made him go the extra mile to improve.
What were the dangers of water? ”Well, as a few have said already, there are several different types of creatures to be wary of in the lake. Grindylow’s, Selkies and Merpeople to name but two. There’s also the giant squid her but it tends to be a little more friendly”. Having run amuck of a few Grindylow’s in his previous years at Hogwarts and seen how that had affected some of his friends, he respected the water and the creatures inside it enough not to go too deep into its midst’s. ” Also, one has to be weary of breathing under water in general. If you’re too deep and your charms fail or your time runs out with your gilyweed, you could end up drowning so if you’re going under, you need to be prepared” . He could be wrong but he had a feeling they might end up going down into the lake and if that was so, he was going to be prepared. He wouldn’t let one of his friends get snatched up by a Grindylow again.

It was good they were outside, because it certainly felt like there were a lot of students. K kept her head down for the most part, willing herself to wake up. The good part of this lesson so far is that it was outdoors, and right by the lake, so perhaps she could draw on that and attempt to enjoy it. She was so focused on that and trying to wake up, she didn't notice any other of the students until her name was spoken.
Looking up, she could see Avalon from the train. Nice person if K remembered correctly, but seemed very chipper for the morning. Which wasn't a probably, except the Amstern could not feign the same attitude. So she just mumbled back, "Good morning. And thanks." Hufflepuff seemed good so far. Hearing her name from somewhere else as well, K turned her and smiled and nodded her greeting at Islay as well, "Hello".
But then, she could feel the Headmaster's eyes on her and asking her a question? Forgetting something? K glanced down to confirm she did have her book bag, and yes, she was actually wearing her school robes. She had even decided to hang them up the night before instead of leaving them in her trunk so the wrinkles should be gone.
But then she remembered manners were a thing. And she had tried to sneak in without giving a proper greeting. Perhaps that? Worth a try anyways. "Good morning, Headmaster Trent." And if that worked, she'd have to make note of it for later.
But then class was starting, so K promptly clamped her mouth shut while it began and tried to focus her attention on the Headmaster's introduction. What were the concerns that came with bodies of water? K raised her hand up a little, waiting for others to finish their answers before she supplied hers. "Shark attacks."
Because he had said muggle concerns could be answered as well, right?

Holly didn’t mind early mornings. It wasn’t like they were her favourite, but she never seemed to have any issue with being awake after she was up and out of her bed. Potentially because the dungeon’s weren’t the warmest and the cold had something to do with it, but either way - she was here. She was fed and watered and most importantly, ready to go.
”Morning, Professor.” She said, wiggling her fingers as she stretched and wiggled her her shoulders. Seemed the rain from last night had cleared up a bit, but it was Scotland… They could be soaked within five minutes.
Looking up as the Professor started the class, she nodded here and there. Yupyup. She was listening. ”Uh, drowning?!” Whoops. Maybe should have expanded on that a bit. ”Though really, you can drown with much less water than is in the lake, even less than is held in a basin sooo….” Hope no-one was scared of water. "Though I guess some don't like that they can't see under water that well? She was used to salty, cold water in her face from swimming in the Firth of Clyde.

Trent called her idea brilliant, which earned a grin from the third year. She liked hearing that very much since she didn't always feel that way about herself. "No stealing necessary, Headmaster. You can take aaaaall the credit." No WAY she was being blamed for inspiring him to soak her classmates.
Cecelia didn't think water was THAT terrifying, but she WAS aware of how much could go wrong when you were hanging out in or around it. The swimming thing she had DOWN, but water could be unpredictable and SO could the stuff that lived IN it. Also, just USING it could get you into LOADS of trouble. Don't think for a SECOND she'd forgotten about soaking that AWFUL french headmistress. It had been an accident THEN but she really didn't regret it. That woman was the WORST.
"Headmaster, the temperature of the water can be dangerous. Like, if it's really cold and you're in it for a long time, your body loses heat and you get super sick. It could even kill you." She eyed the lake and then him and then nodded her head solemnly.
Hearing what Naya said about not sleeping well Cole offered with a small grin. "I can poke you in the side if it seems like you are going to fall asleep." If it was helpful? She was awake and there obviously, but if Naya was ready and alert for the lessons practical parts was another story. It was a pity that they according to Headmaster Trent weren't going to be seeing any merpeople today but maybe some other time?
The first question was rolled out upon the lesson's start and Cole mulled on his answer for a bit as his peers mentioned drowning and grindylows and gillyweed and other stuff. Remembering the summer when Isabel had been burned by a jellyfish very vividly Cole raised his hand and said "If you swim in the ocean you have to be wary of jellyfish that come close to the shore with changing tides and weather because my sister got burned badly by one when she was five and it was horrible to see."
Kale had been P U M P E D for DADA this term. See. Over the summer, he had decided to be less sensitive about his father’s school persona and all around negligence when it came to loving his son at Hogwarts. He was older. More mature. He could TOTES handle it.
unTIL his Daddee was all like call me Headmaster Trent blah blah BLEH. And it felt like a direct ATTACK on his son. Cuz like what, Daddee? HUH?!? Who else was gunna call him anything but Headmaster or Professor? Oh yeah. That’s right. His child.
The blatant call out for what felt like to mind his manners was capital H hurtful.
The blonde Gryffindor completely deflated. Who wanted to be mature anyway? It sounded lame. He was going back to being sensitive.
He didn’t answer but he did give his Daddee a look of utter betrayal.
Avalon gave Kimmie a slight smile back. The Hufflepuff didn't seem up for talking, which was a bit odd, considering she was fairly friendly on the train. But then Avalon heard her give another curt reply to a different student, which partially relieved her. At least it wasn't just her. Maybe Kimmie just had a rough first night. Either way, it was fine, because Avalon wasn't one to chat much after class began anyway.
Considering the first question about water, Avalon's mind immediately went to drowning or dangerous creatures. But it seemed that her classmates already covered those bases. She glanced out at the lake, noticing its extra murky color. It was pretty much impossible to see anything inside, which spurred her thinking. She raised her hand. "Water can be risky because it conceals things, like currents, creatures, or dangerous plants. You often don't know what might be beneath the surface, especially if it's nighttime or if the water is so dark that you can't see through it." That was why she never swam in that disgusting lake behind their old house in Ashwell. Who knew what kind of flesh-eating bacteria was in that?
Smiling a bit to herself, Missa waited her turn before speaking up, as well, “no matter how dehydrated you are, you can’t drink sea water. It’s dangerous. It leaves you even more dehydrated than before”
Water could easily end you if it wanted, basically.

It was early. Well okay, not really that early. Eight in the morning wasn't all that big of a deal normally but he had hardly slept a wink last night. His excitement about all things new had kept him awake. Thankfully it didn't seem to show much as he stood near the lake with everyone else. The early morning sunshine and slight breeze from being so near to the water at this time of day was also helpful in keeping his young mind alert and ready for whatever was to come.
It wasn't to big of a surprise really for the topic to be about water considering where they were all gathered. Lukas turned his blue-gray eyes onto the lake. He knew exactly what lurked in its depths courtesy of his much older siblings. All the obvious answers coming quickly to his mind, specially drowning and all things creature related. Those weren't the only dangers though. Knowing the water you were heading into was extremely important. "Drop-off points can be very dangerous. If you're out in open water or in a body of water that you're unused to it can catch you completely off-guard and have serious consequences." Especially if you didn't know how to swim or where little kids were involved.

"Nefarious." If that little smirk was anything to go by. Though an evil streak from Trent would not be all that surprising; anyone who could create and then unleash Vegetable Trent on the world was at least a little bit twisted. Take it from someone who knows. "Not at all worried, sir."
Oh look, a Bellchant. "Good morning, Isla," he greeted her, a pleasant smile on his face. "Nice day for it." That wouldn't last, Nem wagered.
Anyway, moving on. And, for the record, Nem had few plans to call Trent 'Headmaster' rather than 'Professor'. As well as preferring to give him the downgrade, Nem felt it could also do his son some good. He was very thoughtful like that.
The preludial mention of something 'to get them all thinking' was not really all that promising to Nem, especially when it was swiftly followed by 'ease you back into the learning process'. It only served to highlight the fact that the first few lessons of the term were extra insulting in their simplicity, and Nem huffed a sigh and glanced out at the water, twisting the ring on his thumb exactly three times before raising a hand.
"People have been known to hide armies of Inferi in large bodies of water - including this large body of water." Nice and loud for the people in the back. "So who's to say that when you go for a dip in a lake or river or anywhere, really, that you're not gonna get a friendly visit from a bunch of reanimated corpses? You might think that's a fish tickling your foot, but could be there's something trying to grab you and drag you under." Flashing a pleasant smile, Nem hooked his thumbs into his pockets and fell silent again.

Okay, so Trent didn't take the hint that what she was saying was 'cut it out with these eight A.M. classes'. Well, he probably did take the hint, but she knew he could care less. She was up, she was here, and class was starting. At least there wasn't a door he could slam shut.
Headmaster Trent. Professor Trent. Something Trent. She had no idea what amenable meant, but okay. Anyway, question time! She raised her hand. "I think one of the biggest dangers is that humans aren't adapted to water as much as they are land. This can get them in trouble in both magical and mundane ways," she said. "Our bodies aren't made for water, so there's tons of situations we can get into that water just makes even worse for us."
A nice swim in the lake was a completely different situation than drowning or a tsunami or something.

Jillian did not regret her decision in bringing her breakfast with her. As long as she finished it before class started why not, right? There will be no vomiting for Miss Kim today. Fingers crossed. She looked at the lake as the headmaster began to speak- signaling that it is the start of class. Where they going to swim today? A student earlier brought it up and now she's been thinking about it. She's hoping that that is not the case. Jillian is not ready for this.
Her gaze returned to headmaster Trent when he raised his first question as always.... You know, before he discusses the activity involved today. Again, she is hoping that it won't be swimming in that water. "Uhmm..." she raised her hand to answer "i think it's not just the creatures living in the water that makes it risky but it's the mentality that in large bodies of water where it is deep, vast and dark, we tend to associate it with something dangerous" she replied. It's the fear of the unknown because they don't really know what's down there.

Okay, okay!
She was definitely awake NOW.
No need to go all Professor-y Headmaster-y on her. Couldn't he see that she was TIRED?
Flora found herself sighing, once again, and after trying and completely failing at flattening her hair that she definitely, definitely, definitely did not brush that morning, she turned back towards the man. She was wearing the biggest, most wide awake smile she could muster. Her left eye might've twitched a little. "Hello, Headmaster. Such a beautiful morning, isn't it?"
Hopefully that was good enough.
She strolled over to where the rest of her classmates were once the lesson officially began. Risks with water? Oh! Her hand went up. "Sometimes trash gets into the water and then fish and whales and probably merpeople eat that trash. Bad things happen when trash is eaten." She guessed. She never ate it.

When everyone was thinking of things about water, Austin was kind of stuck. He rubbed his eyes a bit and started to feel more awake. Yeah. Okay. Thats better.
"You could get stung by a jellyfish in the ocean," he said raising his hand. Kind of blurted out the first answer that came to mind.

Faye couldn't help smiling when the Headmaster had said her last name, made her feel good to know that he hadn't forgotten her name. Though, he was the Headmaster, surely it wasn't that difficult to remember everyone's names, right? Maybe it likely was. NO MATTER, the redhead was very happy to know that he knew her name at least, so that was a very nice mood booster for her.
The lesson had begun and the Headmaster was now fully addressing the students, her attention on him as he asked his first question about the risks of large bodies of water. Waiting for her turn to answer as others responded very quickly, with some facts she hadn't heard yet! She raised her hand before speaking clearly to make sure she was heard, "Whether it be magical or mundane water sir, there may be hidden debris or underwater hazards which can cause injury, including weeds and plants which can entangle people or creatures under the water. It can be very difficult to get out.."
Michael was never, ever late to important things. He LOVED sleeping alright, but he always allowed enough time to arrive on time. And today was no different, except the staircases CHANGED. Normally, it was quite enjoyable and he'd love to explore and maybe figure out the mechanics and timetable (if there was one), but not today. Today, he was ALMOST late to the class. Almost. Good thing it was by the lake, a place he just couldn't miss. He arrived right at 07.59, panting, and the class began.
He couldn't fully concentrate, but he already knew the man's name and titles. Then he asked a question, and the first year could think of a reply right away, but had to catch his breath before. So... this was how this class would go, at least? Good to know.
...his answer was stolen.
He frowned to himself, then got distracted by the weird magical names people were throwing around. There was also friendly squids!? Wow. Cool! He made a mental note to visit the library afterwards. There was just so much to learn, and he was ready!
Oh wait - corpses!!??? He threw a disturbed look at the lake. Here!? He took a step backwards towards the castle. He ... were they... going to learn how to defend themselves from that? Normally, the idea of a corpse wasn't gross - scientifically, it was even exciting, but one that tried to drag you underwater... he didn't know how to swim well. He wasn't so sure he wanted to experience that. If they were allowed to safely dissect it, however... THAT would be GREAT!
"Uuugh... mosquitoes and other bugs that may be carrying diseases lay their eggs in still water." he said as he lowered his hand, then raised it again as if he thought of something. "Are there corpses that drag you in still there?" So that he'd know if it was safe to come closer.

Oh yeah, wow, there were lots of ways that water was dangerous that Bernie hadn't thought of. She nodded at all her classmates' answers, her hand up and waiting to be called upon. "You can drown in less than six centimetres of water," Bernie confirmed with Blake's answer. Her mum, a nurse, had told her that one. And as for her answer, "We have a giant squid here at Hogwarts. He might not like ya and might drown you on purpose." Which would at least be an epic way to die.
She hadn't yet encountered Bartholomew Henry though, even though she'd tried on at least two occasions to get him to the surface of the lake.

It didn't really occur to Louise that the lake may have something to do with their lesson until the discussion had started. She supposed it probably wasn't just coincidence that they were having their lesson by the lake that morning. Merlin, did they have to go in it? It was probably freezing. Not to mention all the creatures and things in there that everyone was listing off that could be their demise.
Hm. Interesting.
Surely Headmaster Trent would fully prepare them before forcing them to face something dangerous. SURELY.
Since this was a class for defense against dark arts, Louise thought how the two might be related and then raised her hands. "There are lots of creatures in the water, some that want to eat us and some that may just get territorial and may try to harm us. Or, err.. anyone who got in the water. So we may have to learn how to defend ourselves against them." HINT HINT. Defend. Geddit?

Nina nodded. She was quite observant, if he didn’t already know. She nodded in agreement before turning to find a place to stand. The nice weather did make it easier to get lost in thought. It was much more inviting than the horrible rain from the night before. Her final arrival to Hogwarts had nearly been ruined by the gloomy weather and the gloomy mood that came along with it. Fortunately not all had gone in the same direction. Especially returning to a dormitory sans Eloise Fairfield. That was quite nice. Nina liked that bit.
Speaking of which, she looked around to see if the Slytherin would be present for this lesson. It wasn’t long that she spent looking though because Professor Trent was soon addressing the class. She knew the moment he explained that there would be theory there would likely be a chorus of complaints from her peers. Nina, however, quite liked the theory. She didn’t mind writing essays and reading the textbook. Attending a practical lesson with Headmaster Trent was always something she looked forward to though. He was so pretty (and sensible—which made him even prettier, in her opinion).
His question opened up way for many possibilities. Nina could think of about a million dangers concerned with bodies of water. Her biggest fear was sharks. Of course drowning had to be mentioned at least ten times. Was anyone even listening? Nina was. For the record. A little too well because these answers were incredibly unnerving. She liked Nemesis’ and Michael's the least. Disease? Armies of inferi? She made sure to look back at their Headmaster after each of these remarks from her classmate. Was she looking for some sort of assurance that they would not be exposing themselves to such things today? Absolutely.
Never in her two (and a half) years at Hogwarts did she enter the lake and after hearing all of this, she most definitely never would. Thanks. She hated it. When it came to Nina, she politely raised her hand and waited her turn. ”In cases where the water isn’t as clear, there’s always the risk that you will cut yourself on coral or rocks, which could result in infection. Some species of coral contain venom too.” Double dangerous. Questions like this were very unnerving. She trusted that Headmaster Trent wouldn't... let anything horrible happen during his class... But she still worried. Like, a lot.

Noah gave Aboli a smile at her whispered response. He'd talk to her later again for now class was beginning. Malachi Trent. Got it. He'd have to start writing down every Professor's last name to make sure he could keep them all straight. He listened to the Headmaster as he spoke about practical lessons that would be balanced with theoretical lessons. That sounded like a good mix so that they could practice what hey were studying. Theory and practice was a good mantra for learning or so Noah thought.
Noah hadn't known what to expect from the Headmaster but he could say that he was pleasantly surprised how candid he was. He liked that.
His eyes drifted towards the Lake and he paused, thinking through the Headmaster's first question. What risks often go hand in hand with bodies of water? Well there were many... Creatures, and whatnot.. He listened to his peers offer up suggestions, smiling when Kimmie mentioned shark attacks and fought off a chuckle when Louise (was it?) was punny. He continued thinking, wondering what else he could offer as contribution to their discussion.
He voiced his opinion. "Some bodies of water can have hidden currents that a swimmer may not be able to see."
Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.
Just gotta get one last yawn out to feel ready. That's all he needed. If he could've made a cup of his morning tea or coffee before coming down he'd feel better. He rotated his head on his neck letting out some cracks and then did some quick arm stretches hoping the pop and pulls would wake him up just a little more.
"Shifting tectonic plates in the middle of the oooOOOooocean....." Ah good got the yawn out.... "Sorry, shifting tectonic plates in the ocean cause earthquakes on the seafloor that will send Tsunamis to shores which could displace thousands of people if they hit populated locations."
Better he was doing better now. Still could use a cup of tea though.
Merlin, if he could freeze this moment in time to relieve it continuously, he would. It was so serene out here. The calm was almost unreal and there was a twinge of guilt knowing he'd be disrupting it soon enough.
The sound of approaching footsteps was already doing that well enough and he turned to watch them approach.
SPOILER!!: Replies
Was he surprised that Morin was one of the first to make it? Not particularly. She'd never been a bad student and he didn't expect her to start here in her final year. It was a big one. The one before the leap into adulthood and the wider world. "Morning, Morin." It sorta rhymed, too.
She looked awake enough. It was good to know some had taken him seriously on getting some rest.
Quite the subdued greeting this was. Malachi watched the Slytherin approach and put some distance between them. "Morning, Blaze." He replied, mildly. Piers had filled him in on the stunt with the cruppies and while he didn't approve of how they'd gone about it--owls worked, they carried messages just fine, and getting permission was the easiest way to keep out of trouble--the man was opting to let it go.
"And good morning to you, Jenovick." The girl hadn't been too far behind, Blaze. Another one that looked awake enough for the day's lesson. Maybe this would be a continuing trend. Perhaps there was nothing to worry about afterall.
It was turning into a line of Slytherins, wasn't it? The Headmaster watched the Head Girl finish off the last of her breakfast--taking it with her to avoid being late, he assumed--before joining them in what was becoming a small huddle. Had she been the reason the Slytherins were already on time? He'd like to think so.
"Morning, Kim." Hopefully it all digested before they really got into things. Might be uncomfortable otherwise.
"Morning Lindsey." Finally, a lion. He was beginning to grow concerned they'd altogether overslept. It simply wouldn't have done to go letting them have it before even introducing himself as their Head of House. Talk about the wrong foot to start off on.
The fact she wasn't drooping over sideways with eyes half closed was a bonus.
This one....this one was definitely awake. "Morning, Ryan. You're rather...chipper this morning." Was it the fresh air and the great outdoors? Perhaps he should take the students outside more often when they had 8 am classes. Was that the secret to waking them up or was it the unspoken threat of being thrown into the lake right there if they began to doze off?
It was something to look into.
One of the newer students. This was one of the most and least exciting parts of each new term. The names he would have to learn and...admittedly, the empty spaces where some used to be. It was definitely...quieter....
"Morning, dear. Try to loosen up a bit." Her hands hooked behind her back gave the exact opposite appearance. "Get your muscles nice and limber. It'll be useful soon."
Gasp and utter shock, he was on time for the first lesson. There would be no pulling teeth and he wouldn't have to give him detention. This was something just short of a dream come true.
"Morning, Fuller. Nice to see you on time." Was it too much to hope he'd keep this up for the whole term? If Curtis behaved, why, it would be the greatest sort of miracle. The sort the Headmaster could get behind.
Dare he hold his breath?
"I can see that." The Headmaster replied with an amused quirk of his lips as he watched the Hufflepuff air boxing. This one had either gotten a great night's sleep or was a morning person through and through. Or maybe he was just a DADA get your hands dirty sort of person.
"There'll be plenty of time to tackle what's coming. You'll need all that energy."
Best not to waste it on nothing.
You know what? He was starting to think he really underestimated his students. So far, they'd been showing up alert and some even looked happy to be here. It felt good, he wouldn't lie. The next in the bunch was Gladin, a wide grin on her face.
"Morning, Gladin. Looking ready for the lesson, I see." It was a good look on her. One they should all try.
And there was Upstead. This one managed to get an amused smirk out of him as well, albeit for slightly different reasons. "Some....some may end up swimming, yes." The less careful, the ones nominated as bait, the ones who just looked good enough to eat. Oh yes, quite a few were in for a little early morning swim.
"Nothing to worry about just yet."
"Morning, Belrose." While this one didn't wear a broad grin across his face, there was something of a pep in his step as he approached and that was good enough for him. Anyone that didn't show up looking like they were falling asleep was already onto a good start.
Well, this was certainly a change from the other students. Grumpy little thing, wasn't she? "You can keep that one and offer me a proper greeting." He told her, not hardly impressed. If this was the first impression she wanted to put forward, he hoped she could deal with the fact it would follow her into at least half the school year.
He was waiting.
"Morning, Rose." The first of his prefects to arrive. To her credit, she didn't show up looking like death. It was a good way to set an example for her peers, a responsible look she was growing into. Consider him a fan.
...."Morning, Grantham." She'd come a far way from being Rainbow Truffles in the last year or so. This subdued Gryffindor was one he hardly knew but had a feeling he may have to get used to.
Admittedly, there was a part of him that felt guilt, a part that thought it may have been his doing, but then...if it was the only way to make her start acting like she had some sense, he couldn't say he was too apologetic. The thing with Grantham was, when she went out, she went all out and that usually ended terribly. Until she could find a balance, he was fine with subdued.
A second student to take particular interest in the lake. He had no doubt the others had noticed. It was, afterall, a big lake. They couldn't miss it from this distance if they tried. But Vance was the second to make an inquiry and the man did enjoy a good bout of curiosity from his students.
"Not today, no. The lesson will more or less be outside of the water today." More or less.
There was a good chance some students would still end up in there.
"Morning, Bellchant!" Amused by her choice of adjectives, why yes, he was. "And you're sounding super chirper[/i] on this super early morning."
8 a.m wasn't the end of the world. Hardly. With breakfast at 7, they'd have had to be up early for one reason or another. He was simply occupying the time that came after they'd eaten. What a saint he was. No praise needed.
Talk about a stark contrast. It was enough to get the most subtle of brow raises out of the Headmaster. Perhaps McCarthy hadn't been one of those who'd gotten a good night's rest. She certainly wasn't up to her usual self and it honestly worried the man a little.
"Morning, McCarthy, everything alright?"
Another to get an eyebrow raise, the Hufflepuff who'd come on over without so much as a hello. No good morning. Nothing.
"Forgetting something?"
Tell him he didn't have to spell it out for her. Several others who'd arrived with her had no trouble getting it.
At least Jones hadn't forgotten his manners--still looking at you, Hufflepuff. "Morning, Jones." The Headmaster replied, emphasizing his greeting as he did in the hopes the girl just before would take the hint if she hadn't already gotten it. Sometimes, the prefects could be used in very practical ways. This was one of those times.
And another respectful Ravenclaw. "Morning, Sinclar." He returned, noting the way she took the spot right by that new girl he was still somewhat eyeing up.
There was the faintest quirk of his lips when he heard her small introduction to him. Legendary, eh? He quite liked the sound of that.
"Morning, Renaldi." The other of his Ravenclaw prefects to complete the pair. He appreciated that she too looked well rested, if nothing else. Those with badges needed to lead by example. Couldn't expect the others to take him seriously when he implored them to get some rest if the prefects weren't listening.
"Morning, Simpson. I'm well enough, thank you." In fact, he might go as far to say he was in an amazing mood. It was the weather, the fresh air, all that. He was here for it. "I hope you are, too."
At least this new kid had a better idea of what was expected. "Morning, son." He returned with a mild nod. He'd learn his name soon enough. First days were always the hardest when it came to learning all the new kiddos but he had the whole year with them--a longer time than most considered.
"Morning, Bones." She looked like she was enjoying the morning air nearly as much as he was. Only nearly. None of them could fuly comprehend what a lovely burst this was for him.
They'd all get their little burst in a bit....a different kind of burst. More of them should try enjoying this calm while they could.
"Do I?" He asked, somewhat surprised by the observation. Leave it to Castillo to pick up on the small things. "I suppose, in some way, I am. Easier to be lost in thought with weather like this, wouldn't you say?" And in a place like this, there was really no telling how much longer it would last.
It was best to take it in while you could.
That almost got a laugh out of him, coming out in more of a chuckle at former Precious Bean #3's question. They were growing so fast, honestly, and he hadn't found any replacements thus far.
"A brilliant idea. I may have to steal it if it comes to that." Deeeefinitely hadn't already planned that. For certain. Not at all. He'd never. Maybe.
Not too surprised about this one's disposition, not really. "Morning, Kowalski. Good to see your eyes open." It was the most he could expect from this one given the circumstances. But it was equally good for the boy's own sake that he was at least awake. That lake was waiting for someone.
And then there was Dakest.
Being Headmaster, he'd seen all the exam results--before the students even--and Dakest's happened to be one of the ones that hit him hard. Sure, the boy wasn't the best at the subject but he wasn't expecting that and didn't think he'd be able to get over it just yet. Not without a sit down at least. It was...well honestly it was wild and the boy's entrance just now gave him the idea he wasn't faring much better.
"Morning, Dakest. I'd like a word with you in my office after dinner." He should be free then, as would the Gryffindor.
"Good morning, dear." Another whose name he would have to learn at some point. Depending on her personality, it probably wouldn't take more than a week...a month tops. It wasn't that the man was bad with names, but the influx of new faces at the start of each term was always enough to disorient him a little.
"Morning, Rivers." Not heading to class looking like she was on the verge of pitching over and taking a nap was a nice tough. It was always the preferred look when his students turned out to his lessons. It told him they were ready and eager--even if not eager--to learn. Today's lesson would require a fair bit of energy. Anyone who was still asleep would be awake soon enough.
And there was one of his original Precious Beans. The more of them that poured in was the clearer it became that they were all growing up and fast moving away from any sort of "precious" status.
"Morning, Asztalos." Polite as ever. Bless her.
The Headmaster, who'd already turned at the approach of the first students, very clearly saw the First Year who'd gone to take a spot wordlessly. Another one, huh? And another First Year at that. This bunch was proving to be less than what he'd expected.
"Forgetting something?"
How many would he have to spell this out for?
"Morning, Moreau."
Plus side, at least she didn't look tired? At least she remembered her manners and said good morning? Were these First Years taking notes? He wasn't opposed to giving the entire year group detention if it came to that.
Oh, so it wasn't just a new kid thing. Would you look at that. This new kid had enough manners about him to offer a greeting. "Good morning." He returned. A pointed glance was spared at the earlier perpetrators. They'd better begin paying attention. He wouldn't go over this again.
And there was Precious Bean #4 being...well...precious. Every time he swore she was growing out of it. Bless.
Her chipper greeting did, in fact, bring a smile to his face but that wasn't to say he wasn't happy before. It had been a great morning thus far. "No worries there, James. I've quite liked where my morning has been going so far. The weather's brilliant, wouldn't you agree? Perfect for the day's lesson."
"Good morning, Rose." He greeted the Hufflepuff Prefect. Was it officially time to be blanket proud of his student leaders? Regardless of how they may have been feeling on the inside, they'd managed to show up to his class looking prepared and awake. It was the right look for sure and he approved.
Speaking of...
"Good morning, Gunter." Was he going to be one of the students to end up in the lake? It was still a little early to tell but he'd been keeping an eye on him. The time for sleep was long time. It was about time to get to the lesson.
"Good morning, Phillips." One of his more dependable students. Stayed on task, took her studies seriously. Would that she could rub off on certain others. Wouldn't that be a treat?
"Morning, Barrie." Walking upright, eyes open. Yep, that was all he needed of the girl for now. The lesson would grow in intensity and at that point it would be in her best interest to be alert but this was only the beginning.
"Morning, Myles. Chipper greeting you've got there." Not a complaint, not by a long shot. He liked the enthusiastic ones at 8 am. They were the ones who proved to the others that this could very much be done.
Were the others paying attention? THIS was how you acted at 8 am, clearly.
Oh joy, another in a perfectly chipper mood. The enthusiasm was slowly returning to the group. "Morning, Stark. Loving the energy."
It was great. There were some students who didn't let a little thing like 8 am stop them.
"Morning, Spencer." The boy's sleepiness was particularly jarring after Stark's entrance. He hoped he'd become more alert before they truly started...unless he planned to end up in the lake.
With the last of the students making there way closer and his watch warning that it was now 8, it was time to begin. Malachi stepped further from the lake and closer to the group of students. They didn't all look awake, but most of them seemed alert enough that he wasn't worried about the outcome of the lesson.
"Good morning, everyone. We're about ready to get class started. For those of you who don't know, my name is Malachi Trent. Headmaster Trent will do, however, in classes, I'm amenable to Professor as well." He'd been doing this long enough to know that there was always a bit of confusion when it came to greetings in his lessons, at least at the start of the year. Things mellowed out on their own soon enough.
"Unless stated otherwise, you can expect practical lessons when you attend. These are balanced out with enough theoretical lessons throughout the term to really cement everything we learn. Complaints won't get you anywhere. Yes, I know essays are boring. I'm equally aware reading assignments are the perfect way to fall asleep but they're necessary." Sometimes coffee, sometimes tea. Everything had its place.
"Right then, a quick question to get you all thinking and ease you back into the learning process. I'm sure you've all taken in our setting. For some, water is the most terrifying force on earth. It has the ability to cause destruction and conceal many hidden dangers. What risks often go hand in hand with bodies of water? Both magical and mundane are fine."
All answers welcome.
OOC: Hey guys! The class has officially begun. You can still join in, just pretend your charrie has been here the whole time. I mean, they could be late, too, if you really wanted but Trent doesn't recommend it. Ahem. I'll be moving us on again in about 24 - 28 hrs, give or take.
When he finally finished tying his tie, the professor/headmaster had spoken to him. He flushed slightly when he realized he was being rude. Again with this rudeness. That was not who Dylan was, and that's not how he was going to be perceived. "Hello, Sir." He responded sheepishly.
Now that everyone was settled and most, if not all, of the students had arrived the class had begun. Dylan did his best to pay attention to everything he was saying. It was important to him that he was attentive, seeing as he ignored him in the first place.
Water, huh? Well water could have many different dangers. There were things like Tsunami's that could take out entire towns, or dangerous creatures that could lurk in the water and bite off an arm when you weren't paying attention. But he was sure the professor wasn't looking for anything that drastic. No he was probably looking for something along the lines of eroding away rocks or flipping boats.
Dylan raised his hand and waited to be called on before answering. "Those who tend to live on or near the water have to be sure to have their house raised so as not to flood any part of it. I've seen some houses on stilts even!" His face flushed red again. That wasn't very loud, and he was lucky to be sitting closer to the professor otherwise he probably wouldn't have heard him. Dylan was not a very loud person, and he really didn't like answering questions in front of this many people, but after the incident upon walking in, especially since he looked so disheveled, he wanted to be sure Professor Trent knew he was paying attention.
