For this assignment, you must make a luxury toiletry set for yourself and then USE said toiletry set. You must write a short reflection after using your toiletry set and how each of your products did while using them. Your set must include:
A soap
a face mask or scrub
A towel (face cloth)
Steps!
Make the soap
Make the face mask
Make the towel
Use all of these things
Write a reflection about how they worked.
How to make soap (hardest part, kiddos)
Pick your plant based oil! Any of these will work - available in the greenhouse! Your character will have technically pulled out the oils from these plants themselves since we learned it in class.
Pick your fragrance (essential oils provide the fragrance) - pick as many as you want. Your character will have technically pulled out the oils from these plants themselves since we learned it in class.
A lye and water mixture will be provided. This is needed to make soap. Once you have picked all of your substances, pour them all in a cauldron. Do not let them sit for too long, or the chemical reaction (the process is different if you’re not using magic; this will not work if you’re not using magic) will mess up your soap. Give your wand a quick flick at the cauldron and say the incantation, Sape Jago! (Saype Jah-go) the mixture will combine and do the chemical thing it needs to go to turn into a bar of soap. WELL DONE! (Paul would have went over this in a previous class)
Face mask:
Pick any natural facemask recipe you can find and make it! Don’t have to be complex or difficult; pick something easy if you want!
Towel!
Using either beach grass, bamboo, okra, or anything else that can be made into material (mentioned in class)
intorqueo corda those plants once you strip them apart.
Next use all of these things!
Then, write a reflection on how they work!
SPOILER!!: OOC
-I need at least a post with each process (ie: the soap, then the face mask, then the towel, and you can include a post of your character trying the face mask if you WANT. Optional and for fun!) but you can do as many posts as you want for each process as well.
-Then, I need the reflection.
-The soap part can be done in the potions lab, or elsewhere if your character wishes. Easiest in the lab. The other posts can be done anywhere in the castle your character would do these things, including the greenhouses. This thread is to track your posts and link them in as you post. Feel free to play with each other/work together (while still individually producing the products of the assignment). If your character wants another person to try anything they’ve made, that is allowed, too, but make sure to note it in the reflection.

Herbology assignment
I found making my own soap, towel, and face mask to be a fun assignment. I liked being able to pick out my own oils for the soap and making it smell just like I want. I chose lime and coconut because it reminds me of summer and the beach. My soap was nice and it worked well. I think I might add more lime or even some lime zest next time.
My face mask was very easy to make and I got to use items from breakfast to make it. The avocado and yogurt made my face very soft, but it turned a gross brown color because I didn’t use it right after I made it. Next time I’ll make it right before wanting to use it so it doesn’t look so gross. I might even add honey next time because honey can help keep your skin pimple free and no one has time for pimples.
The towel was much trickier. I don’t know if I chose the wrong material, or if I didn’t do the spell correctly, but the bamboo didn’t get super soft. My towel worked fine as a hand towel, but it was scratchy on my face. I don’t like scratchy towels for my face. I would like to try and make a towel again using a different material to see if it is softer.
This assignment was amazing. For the soap, I choose almond oil for the conditioning and lather aspect and lavender oil for the relaxation properties. As a Quidditch player who likes to relax and take care of herself especially when it comes to beauty, I thought they would be the ideal combination. At first, I was very nervous about making the soap because I hadn't made something in the Potions lab on my own. Thankfully, it was very successful.
I made a very simple face mask with only three ingredients (banana, orange juice and honey) that could be sourced from any kitchen. I made this mask due to the fact that depending on the weather or factors like stress, my skin reacts differently. The mask was very easy to make.
I used beach grass for the making of the face cloth. By performing a Severing Charm, I stripped the material before making the towel. It did take a couple of moments after I said the incantation for it to form its shape which had me worried for a bit but it turned out okay.
As I headed for the girls' bathroom with my new toiletry set, I was nervous as to how the items would react with my skin due to my skin not being as good as it normally is due to some stress.
I found the soap had a beautiful lather and it made my skin feel very supple. The aroma made me feel very calm. There was no negative reaction with my skin after I rinsed the soap off my face. The face mask had a lovely fruity and sweet smell and it was very safe for all skin types. I left it on my face for fifteen minutes prior to rinsing it off. My skin glowed much to my delight.
The face towel felt fine. It dried my face without any irritation but then again, I am usually fine with various towelling materials.
For my soap I used sunflower with the essence of cinnamon. I don't think these two make a good combination as the smell was slightly strange but it did create a lot of bubbles when lathered up. I think this spell is useful if you know what oil essences pair well with eachother.
My facemask was very simple as I don't think it's good to cover your face with goo. I used cucumbers on my eyes as I've seen other people do this before. I imagine cucumbers perhaps have some relaxation properties because it made me fall asleep.
The towel was a lot smaller than expected but was fine for a hand towel. It was a little too scratchy and probably could've used with a softening charm.
Overall, I didn't find any difficulties with the assignment but I don't think I'll be magically making soap products in the future.

This project was worrisome to me, but overall I think it went better than I could have expected of myself.
For the soap, I chose sunflower oil, and mixed it with the scents of juniper berry, lavender, and grapefruit. The grapefruit seemed to go by unnoticed, and the juniper berry was subtle compared to the lavender. It worked well enough I think, although it's hard to tell how much it actually cleaned any bacteria from my face. I wish I could have marked that.
My face mask was a difficult task simply because the recipes I found were gross. I prefer not to spread food all over my face, particularly oatmeal. Yet for some reason, I chose a recipe that consisted of water, baking soda, and oatmeal. Of course, there were probably better options available for me to try, but this one was simple and seemed harder to mess up. I also didn't fancy slimy honey on my face, so I nixed those recipes first. I wonder now if I would have preferred that. I didn't feel as though the ingredients were hard at work on my face, but it was also hard to tell anything past the feeling of oatmeal. I think my mixture had too much water, too, and I tried to rectify this during set-up by fixing the ratio, and at my trial by getting rid of some excess. After a little help, it stayed a bit better on my face until it was time to rinse off. I was glad that the baking soda was there as it acted as a very nice exfoliant, very clearly doing its job for me.
The towel was the thing I was most worried about completing, but it went better than I could have hoped for. I went out on a limb, and decided to do a mix of the beach grass and a bit of bamboo. I was overly curious about both, and thought this would be the best way to alleviate that. At first, the two didn't seem to want to cooperate, but then it got a bit easier. I am unsure if it was my spellwork between the two fibers, or if it was a slight inconsistency of stripping the material, but it wasn't as soft as I wished. I think it was the bamboo, where I should have tried to strip them a bit more? The beach grass was a bit difficult for me to strip originally, but I think the end result was well worth it. The bamboo I'm not as positive, but I'm sure it could get there too. This towel was completely fine for pat down, but it was a bit rougher if you tried to rub across your face with it.
Overall, I'm okay with my results and feel more comfortable with the ideas. In the future though, I still prefer to buy these from professionals instead.
