Default Muggle Studies Lesson 1- Let's Play! (Sports)

With the months of December, January and February generally being the coldest in Scotland and the new year being no different, Kay had taken the proper precautions to ensure her classroom was warm and toasty. There was a fire merrily cackling away for one thing. It was warm enough to make anyone want to nap but not hot enough to make any of the kiddos sweat. The desks and chairs were arranged as usual- a path in the middle from the front of the room to the back with two sections of furniture.

Hanging from the walls were various posters. These posters will give you a hint about what today’s lesson will be about. In the meanwhile, you are free to take a seat. Professor Kay sits behind her desk, chin resting on her linked fingers thanks to her arms propped on the desk by her elbows. Unfortunately, there is no trace of her signature smile. In fact, he expression is almost blank and she seems to be in another world. Despite this, she greets you.

OOC: Heeeey! Welcome to our first OOC lesson! We’ll get started in 24- 27 hours so feel free to have those kiddos interact with their peers and Kay. Though don’t go overboard with the chatting!
CLASS HAS STARTED!

SUMMER FOREVER

Muggle sports, RIIIIIGHT. Etta knew next to nothing about it but she recalled having read something a long time back.. and then again, she couldn’t exactly remember what it was. Well, this was problematic. The prefect absently doodled on her parchment, trying to THINK. After a little while, she finally raised a hand to answer.

“We are not allowed to participate in Muggle sports? And.. I don’t know, Professor. I mean, I’m sure there are wizards who want to participate in Muggle sports but like Jessa mentioned, what if they use magic? Won’t the game become incredibly one-sided? That’s not fair.”

... and the professor had already moved on to the next question.. or rather, questions. Um. She was not a very sports-inclined person so AGAIN, the girl had difficulty answering the question.

“Uh, Professor, I do like quidditch of course. And as far as muggle sports is concerned.. I kind of like tennis? It looks to be a very physically-exhausting game but.. somehow fun and interesting at the same time. I don’t play, though.”

Of course it was breached; somehow Skylar wasn't surprised because they wouldn't be talking about this if there wasn't some sort of breach involved. Skylar wasn't particularly interested in the topic BUT she was interested in doing well on her exams, which was why she jotted down a few notes such as the names Professor K Stewart had mentioned, along with the page number for further reference.

Details were important, after all.

No, no muggle teams supported here, obviously. Nor favorite muggle athletes; she did have some beater inspirations, but it wasn't really relevant to muggle sports, so Skylar remained silent at those questions. She did have an opinion as to how she arrived at the conclusion that wizarding sports and games were enough though, obviously, since she'd stated that.

"Wizarding games and sports are enough, because why would we want to involve ourselves in keeping our feet on the ground? When we have the ability to fly?" Literally and figuratively. "It just seems to be taking a step backwards. Not that muggle sports aren't exhilarating or interesting, but compared to flying, it's just ... boring."

Uhhhh.... Natalie was still confused. They weren't allowed to participate in muggle sports? AT ALL? The young Slytherin worried for a moment and then raised her hand. "Um, professor, I have a question. Can we play muggle sports with other witches and wizards?" Because she had played with a basketball with her brother over the summer when they were visiting their grandparents and she didn't really want to get sent to Azkaban because of it.

As for the next topic of discussion, Natalie kept quiet. She didn't know anything about muggle sports other than the bouncy orange ball that went into the hoop.

SPOILER!!: Second question

“What I would like for you to do next, is to share a bit of your knowledge about sports with myself and your classmates. Any particular sport that holds your interest? Tell us which and why. Do you support any Muggle teams? Do you have a favourite athlete? You’re not limited to these questions. For those of you, like Ms Diggory, who feel that wizarding sports and games are enough, how did you arrive to this conclusion? Feel free to give any information related to the topic.’’

OOC: We’ll move on in 24-27 hours. Have fun with your answers!
Muggle sports teams huh? Is it weird that Jonas knew of a team in the States? He raised his hand regardless.

"I've heard of an American football team calles the Oregon ducks," he mentioned.

Puff by day, snake by night | Mj's bestie | Always UP to Something...

.... and there is another day that Eddie wished he would have faked sick. Not only was he stuck learning pointless muggle sports, but he was supposed to like sports. Why did people just assume that everyone loves sports? It was rather rude as far as he cared and he didn't care to answer anything as usual. He just sat and tapped his fingers to his desk possibly a little annoyingly.

That was until she asked about their own sports liking and he had enough,"Professor,
what if people don't like sports. Why do we have to live in a world that sports are a big part of? Why not have things like professors be the main focused and more publicized as good instead of pointless sports where the athletes are more a ridiculous fame hogs then actual role models for the youth of today."
He had heard his uncle say that once, but when he said, professors, he didn't really say that, Eddie decided to suck up a little, because hey people needed that extra luck at times.

As soon as the Statue was mentioned, Ronan snapped out of whatever little funk he was in. He was HARDCORE for the Statue, despite his preference for muggle things. It was a matter of survival, after all. Thank goodness there was no sign of the head girl in class today, because, well, everyone knew how that would probably turn out.

He kept silent through the technical aspect, though, as everyone pretty much said everything he was going to.

As they moved on, though, someone said something that stuck in his craw. "Why would anyone want to struggle to keep their derrière on a broom? Or have disgusting gunk squirted on them?" Suck on that, Diggory.

Anyway, on to the actual question. Honestly, he really wasn't a sports kind of guy. But he did participate in some sports-adjacent type things. "I know they're not really considered sports, but I do enjoy boxing and self-defense classes. Plus, my mum says they're useful to know, just in case you're without your wand for some reason." You know, an extra way to defend yourself.

Also, another thing he agreed with. "He makes a good point, professor." Ronan said of the Slytherin (Eddie). "I would also add those who work in law enforcement as those who deserve to be recognized more." Though, his own mum had done pretty well for herself in that regard.

Default Catching up/Question 2 :)

Clara had momentarily dozed off for about half a minute. For some reason, her mind wandered and she ended up daydreaming about owning foxes? Not really sure where that came from.

She snapped back to reality and listened as other classmates talked about the whole secrecy statue. Everyone honestly had good inputs. She herself thought that rules were rules, but maybe they didn't always make sense. She understood where the rule was coming from and why it existed, but at the same time, she totally thought that it could be perceived as a little unfair.

Her mind drew a blank at the professor's next question, though. She chuckled nervously as she tried to think about sports. It wasn't really something she did very often. In fact, she tended to avoid anything sports-related.

Clara raised her hand, "Um. I do enjoy sitting in on our Quidditch games. I'm not suited for playing myself, but the watching aspect can be exciting, especially when you're rooting for your House. And as for Muggle sports...I'm familiar with some of the big name teams, like the Chicago Cubs in the United States. My family once went to one of their baseball games while on vacation and they won. Ever since then they stuck in my memory." She reflected on the baseball game briefly, remembering the snacks they ate more than the actual score result. "To be fair, though, if we're talking Muggle sports, I find baseball a bit...bland? Lots of waiting around for things to happen. While nothing's as exciting as a Quidditch match, I personally like to, er, swim in my spare time. It keeps me grounded and the goal-setting aspect really helps me. I tend to gravitate towards solo sports. Team building's important for sure, but there's something to be said about achieving something all by yourself, right?" she added.

Yep. And the fact that she trusted no one. But that was another story for another time.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Major spoiler alert: she didn't like sports.

In her younger years, she'd been the least coordinated person she knew. All the bumps and scrapes and she hadn't even been trying to be active. They weren't fun to play and they weren't fun to watch. Quiddicth, was actually a very lovely exception to the rule. She wasn't great at it, but she and Cameron had been working on it and now she didn't suck nearly as much as she used to.

That being said, Jessa didn't know much about sports or players, least of all muggle ones, so the young Ravenclaw simply turned her attention to Skylar and Ronan. She wasn't sure if this would spark an argument or debate between the two but it was still interesting to note the varying views.

Outside of that action, she didn't have much to contribute to this discussion and couldn't think of a question to ask in place of a response...because there wasn't much of anything she wanted to know about sports.

They were just...meh.

It was interesting to listen to everyone's different opinions about the statute and sports. It was also nice to have the discussion without much controversy .......yet. When the topic segued into what sports everyone liked, Shay was even more interested. You never knew what grabbed someone's fancy. When she was ready to add her two cents to the conversation, she raised her hand.

"I'm a sports fan in general. I like a wide variety of sports, wizarding and muggle. As far as muggle sports go, I really like baseball. I think I like it for the exact reason Clara doesn't. It's a slow game.....yes, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's a very simple game.....throw, hit, catch. Its simplicity makes it easy to follow. It can be relaxing too. There's nothing like spending an afternoon at the ballpark. Oh and I'm a Yankees fan. 'Cause they're the home team for me."

Sports. Muggle sports. Um. Derf primarily lived and breathed quidditch when it came to athletics - becoming a professional was his backup plan if magizoology fell through - but he was drawing a blank at the moment. Save for one thing but he really didn't know much. Bel had told him a bit about BMX and bikes and stuff...and was teaching him how to ride a muggle bicycle. Like one of those in the picture with all the sunflower. But he really didn't feel like he knew enough to be able to contribute to the conversation.

Unless that conversation was about quidditch and then he could.

Instead...he was sorta stuck on something else.

"Professor?" he asked sheepishly, ruffling his hair as he gathered his thoughts. "If...if the clause was made to prevent witches and wizards from cheating because of their ability to perform magic and stuff...then why...are squibs a breach?" He had understood that, right? "They CAN'T use magic. Is just knowledge of the magical world enough to...condone someone from competing in muggle sports? Like...if a super famous muggle athelete happened to marry someone who was magical...or was super good friends with someone...and they KNEW about our world...would that mean they would have to retire from athletics?" There was so much hair rufflng going on. "Just seems...I dunno..." He probably would have been better able to address this if he paid more attention in History of Magic. "...seems kinda mean...and primeval."

Kay indicated to the tennis posters hung around the classroom. “Tennis, like most if not all sports, is indeed exhausting. England hosts its own tournament each year called Wimbledon but there are also other major tournaments called Grand Slams such as the Australian Open and the US Open. Tennis entails two players or two teams of two players each. The players use a racket and they attempt to strike a ball over the net in the center in such a way that their opponent does not score a point. The player unable to return the ball, does not score.

“There is also another form of tennis called ‘Table Tennis’ or ‘Ping Pong’. Like the name suggests, it is played on a table and is basically played the same as regular tennis.’’

“I believe that’s a University team in the US. American football is completely different from from soccer. Players of eleven per team, use an oval shaped ball. The objective is to get a point either by kicking or securing a touchdown. There are goalposts on either ends of the field where the scoring can be done.''

Kay nodded understandingly. “From the little of baseball that I’ve watched, I’m inclined to agree that it does take some time for things to happen. For those of you unfamiliar with this game, what happens is that there are two teams, one pitching the ball and the other batting. After the ball is hit, he or she then runs around four bases which are set on the ground. They are called the first, second, third and home plate. The run gets scored when a player runs around these bases before returning to the home plate.’’

It was the ones who thought like Skylar that needed convincing but Kay believed it could be done. “It’s good to have an open mind, Ms Diggory. With a mind like that we can go a far way. Gobstones involves us keeping our feet on the ground,’’ she pointed out. “However, a number of witches and wizards enjoy muggle sports as you can see. I encourage you to involve yourself with some. Surely you will change your mind.’’ She could do nothing more but to advise Skylar because the girl’s opinion was her own.

Kay refused to let a heated disagreement break out in her class. “Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, Mr Carter. But I do like your open mind about non magical sports.’’ Of course she would. And in a way, she was reminded of Kitty.

“Ah, yes. Those are very handy skills to have if you should find yourself without a wand. Professor Hirsch would approve of this.’’ She looked around to address the glass once again. “Amateur boxing is an Olympic sport. It is overseen by a referee and it takes place in rounds of one to three minutes. Self defense options would include Jujutsu, Judo and Karate.’’

Kay nodded, the question she had first asked herself when she came across this interesting piece of information. "Based on my research, Mr Ashburry- Hawthorne, the writers referred to the Squibs as 'gifted'. Gifted in what way, I cannot say exactly. I can only speculate that maybe, just maybe, that Squibs born of more recent years or in the 2000s may have a little magic in them. Or it is possible that Squibs are still considered a no-no because they are born into a wizarding family.'' She now shook her head. "No, they wouldn't have to retire. It is the wizard or witch that would have to refrain from wanting to join or actually join a Muggle team as a professional.'' As for the Hufflepuff's opinion, Kay could not agree more. It was absolute nonsense. She had half the mind to let Kitty knew she would be joining her future protests about the Statute.

Jessa had been participating earlier and she had opted to sit this question out which was fine with Kay.

With this wrapping up the theory part of the lesson, Kay addressed the class once more. “It’s time for today’s activity. For this, we need to move to the Entertainment Room. You may leave your belongings here. I’ll explain further when we’re all there.’’

Uh.... excuse you, Ronan Carter? Skylar shot him a look when he seemed to disagree with her about 'struggling to keep their derrière on a broom' or 'disgusting gunk'. Maybe people who were less talented had to worry about such things, but that would be the same with any sport.

And she might have retorted back with such a remark, except that Kaysha Stewart seemed to be disagreeing with her and saying she wasn't open minded or whatever. That and they were moving on to an activity, but still. "I run." She said simply; that was a muggle sport, there was Ms "I side with the less talented Gryffindor" happy now? Because apparently unless she enjoyed some muggle sport, she was close-minded.

Entertainment room? Were they going to be playing a video game of a muggle sport? Or was the entertainment room used for more than just muggle technology? Packing her notes and pencil into her bag, she left it beside her desk and moved into the room, curious as to what sport they'd be playing. Surely as a talented wizard beater, it wouldn't be too terrible. Hopefully.

Slytherin by heart

He had been curious about playing muggle sports outside of professionally himself, so he was glad someone asked about it. He would have hated to be cited for playing something. But then again, his dad probably would have warned him against it if that were a possibility, wouldn't he? He wasn't actually sure how much his dad knew about the statues. But it was good to learn about them here, wasn't it? Either way, it was time to play. Kyle checked on his bag out of habit then went into the Entertainment Room, curious as to what they would be playing.

Clara turned around to listen to Shay discuss why she liked baseball. She supposed it could be relaxing, but for her, it was just frustrating because the speed of the game simply clashed with her impatient personality. Feeling oddly validated at the professor agreeing that it could be slow, Clara felt as though she had learned. Yeah, not everyone was going to agree or have the same opinion. But that was perfectly fine. After all, it was not healthy to live inside an echo chamber forever.

So, now what? Are we moving to the Entertainment Room? Without our stuff? Clara stared at her bag and materials in a slightly panicked mode. It was strange indeed, but she suddenly had an ominous feeling that the 'Entertainment Room' would not be all that entertaining.

Nevertheless, she sat up and began heading to the "Entertainment Room".

Sarah thinks I'm cute | Shan's safe space.

'You may leave your belongings here' was always an ominous sentence to Felicity. It wasn't that she had anything of value in her bag - her only valuable items were around her neck and on her fingers in the form of jewellery - but even so, it made her uncomfortable. She put her textbook, parchment and quill back into her bag, before zipping it and making her way to the door.

She had to admit that her curiosity was piqued, though.

Oh, they'd be moving to the entertainment room for the remainder of the lesson. Oh. Why did this make the Ravenclaw's stomach feel like it had sunk into her feet? Maybe because the implication was them having to play some of these sports that they'd been talking about.

Merlin help her...and whoever happened to be on her team. Could she sit out? Was this mandatory? Was it too late to feign illness and be asked to do alternative work for the rest of the lesson?

With a heavy sigh, Jessa rose from her seat with the others and moved from her desk.

Hopefully this wouldn't end up as terribly as she thought it would.

Patrick had listened as his classmates informed him on some of the magical sports. He hadn't heard of more than quiditch but that was more because his family wanted him to be as into his studies at his muggle school just in case he wasn't a wizard. Turns out he was a wizard and still loved baseball.

Now this was a question he could answer, "I love baseball, I'm also a very big fan of American Football. My parents wanted me to be as involved in my muggle school back in the United States, so I loved watching the Cleveland Indians baseball team and College or University Football." He tried to contain himself and simmer down a bit because he was way too excited to talk sports even if it was only for a brief moment.

He packed all of his stuff away into his bag and placed it on the table before he began to follow the other students to the entertainment room in order to have the rest of class and take on the activity.

Oh, good. She wasn't going to get sent to Azkaban for playing basketball. That was good to know. It wasn't WORTH it, honestly. She didn't even know how the game worked!

Natalie perked up when the professor said they would be moving onto an activity in the entertainment room. Curious and excited, Natalie tucked away her notebook and her textbook and put her bag on her chair before leaving the classroom with the rest of the students and moving into the entertainment room.

This was his time to exit, yes? He could just slip out as they headed to the other room, he didn't want to really be there anyway and what a good time to duck out than right now.

Eddie gathered his things and headed towards the door. They wouldn't notice him at all if he passed the room and just kept walking. Maybe he could head to his common room and get a nap in or head to the potion lab to work on the new posion he wanted to brew. It seemed like every time he went to do it someone was in there and he had to lie about the reason he was there.

Once out of the room instead of heading into the other room he headed down the corridor the opposite way.

Gryffindor for life Notorious Niffler

Today's lesson made Emmeline feel kind of small and -- well -- dumb. As usual, she hadn't bothered to do any reading on the subject of Muggle sports before class and so she knew absolutely nothing about the topic. Muggle sports was a forbidden topic (along with most Muggle things) with her family, and they just hadn't really come up in her conversations with Cami and Miss Kay and the other Stewarts last summer. The only thing she really knew about them was that they didn't move in Muggle pictures, 'cause Muggle pictures never moved at ALL (weeeeird). So, the second year had been super quiet for the whole lesson and had chosen to dutifully take notes on the statute and her classmates' answers and stuff instead of trying to make up answers to the professor's questions.

To make matters worse, the twelve-year-old hadn't really played sports herself ever, other than those flying games that Professor B. let them play sometimes. She'd seen a couple of Quidditch matches and followed her team somewhat obsessively in the Daily Prophet, of course, but she wasn't exactly athletic or used to playing on a team. So the professor announcing that they were moving to the entertainment room gave the girl an odd sense of dread. She had a bad feeling about this, but she still trooped out of the classroom with her classmates.

Honestly...the professor's response did little to calm his curiosity....and his disappointment in the wizarding community. Not to mention that BY DEFINITION a squib was someone who did not have any magical manifestation in them...so what she was saying about the 2000's really just elicited more hair ruffling. Needless to say, the Hufflepuff was feeling particularly crestfallen as the lesson moved on and without the proper wordage to ask appropriate follow up questions. Of which he had LOADS but just...didn't know how to ask.

Also...they were changing locations so it didn't really seem appropriate to ask anyway.

SIGH.

Leaving his things behind though? That made Derf kinda uneasy...for enchanted suitcase reasons, you know? SOoooooooooooooo...making sure the latch was locked and such, Derf tucked it safely under his chair and followed the rest of the class to the Entertainment Room...only to catch Edward heading in the opposite direct? "OI! Room is this way!" he called out with some very helpful finger pointing in the direction everyone else was walking.

You know, just being your friendly neighborhood Hufflepuff over here.

So she had been right about sports and Professor Stewart confirmed it even before she began the lesson and started the discussion. Cass remembered the previous joint lesson and let her mind wander just a little to think back on what exactly they had learned and she remembered off the top of her head. The sixth year didn’t remember anything directly connected to muggle sports and the Statute so she simply listened as others brought up what they knew. Or guessed on it as the professor offered the option.

As for being familiar with muggle sports and the question of supporting muggle sports, Cassie was all for it. She didn’t play, obviously, would have actually enjoyed playing quidditch if it was allowed like it had been when her parents went to Hogwarts but she occasionally paid attention. Grayson was still the better expert at that field of knowledge though. The Ravenclaw briefly wondered what her younger brother would think of the matter if he was in the class but was drawn back by the continuing discussion.
Tennis…American Football…baseball…

She took down some notes, especially anything she hadn’t known including the more American aspects. But then they were to move on, the activity drawing them to the Entertainment room. So leaving her belongings, Cass got up like the rest and headed out of the classroom. Time for some playing no doubt.

An eyebrow was raised as he received a look from Skylar. Wasn't his fault that her comment came off as extremely biased and frankly, kind of arrogant. And a smirk played across his lips as Professor Stewart seemed to agree and trimmed the Slytherin's fangs a little, so to speak. As a side note, just because he wasn't talented with brooms or Gobstones didn't mean he wasn't talented at other things.

"Of course, we're all entitled to our own opinions, professor! I just didn't like the way she expressed hers. Came off as kind of arrogant to my ears." And it couldn't be dismissed as a sign of her house, either. He came from a family full of Slytherins, so he knew that wasn't true.

And now they were moving to the entertainment room. Ronan got up and packed his stuff into his bag. Once everything was packed and his bag zipped, he put it under his desk and pushed his chair up, making sure his stuff was as hidden as it could be given the circumstances. Not that he was dumb enough to keep his valuables in there or anything. More of a 'just in case' type of thing. That done, he followed the rest of the class to the other room.

As the conversation/ discussion came to an end, the professor had a surprise. Oh, a field trip. They would be moving on to the Entertainment Room. Shay wondered what sports related activity they would be getting into. Setting her quill down, Shay stood up and stretched a little. You could never be too prepared when sports were involved. Joining her classmates, Shay headed toward the door. Next stop, the Entertainment Room.

SUMMER FOREVER

Etta listened to what the professor said, her eyebrows raised. There seemed to be so many different kinds of muggle sports and she hadn’t even heard of half of them. She definitely had to do some reading on the subject. She’d kind of hoped that the professor would explain a little more but it seemed like they had to move to the entertainment room.

Oooooh, a fun activity. Were they going to play any muggle sports? Feeling extremely curious, the girl followed her classmates to the other room, wondering what the professor had in mind.
