Default Muggle Studies Lesson 1- Let's Play! (Sports)

With the months of December, January and February generally being the coldest in Scotland and the new year being no different, Kay had taken the proper precautions to ensure her classroom was warm and toasty. There was a fire merrily cackling away for one thing. It was warm enough to make anyone want to nap but not hot enough to make any of the kiddos sweat. The desks and chairs were arranged as usual- a path in the middle from the front of the room to the back with two sections of furniture.

Hanging from the walls were various posters. These posters will give you a hint about what today’s lesson will be about. In the meanwhile, you are free to take a seat. Professor Kay sits behind her desk, chin resting on her linked fingers thanks to her arms propped on the desk by her elbows. Unfortunately, there is no trace of her signature smile. In fact, he expression is almost blank and she seems to be in another world. Despite this, she greets you.

OOC: Heeeey! Welcome to our first OOC lesson! We’ll get started in 24- 27 hours so feel free to have those kiddos interact with their peers and Kay. Though don’t go overboard with the chatting!
CLASS HAS STARTED!

Merlin it was warm in here. Jessa had taken to the habit of casting warming charms on herself as she walked the often cold corridors of the castle but this room was making her rethink that.

The Ravenclaw ended the charm as she walked in, unwilling to overheat when it clearly wasn't a necessity. "Sorry about the magic, Professor." She said, making her way over to her seat. "I didn't know it'd be this warm in here when I put it on earlier." And was the woman alright? She seemed a little out of it today. Jessa was used to the perky disposition, making the sight just a little strange for her.

Blue eyes drifted over the posters on the walls, stopping at one in particular.

"Why d'we have a soccer poster?" Don't tell her they'd be continuing the trend of American education even with the Ilvermorny students now thankfully gone. Last term had been enough. She'd heard enough. Was there enough to learn about muggles in their own culture?

It had her looking over all the posters again. Hopefully she wasn't missing something.

Kyle walked around the room carefully looking at the posters. Tournaments, huh? Were they going to wind up playing games this time around? That would be a lot of fun. Though, they didn't have that long of a class. Too bad they couldn't have a video game tournament. But what would they play? Anything they could compete with he probably wasn't very good at. Of course, looking at the posters on the wall, there may be sports he couldn't play as well. Muggle sports was not an area he was familiar with.

He greeted the teacher once he thought about it then went and sat down. He was a little embarrassed that the posters took his attention away from the teacher. But that's what they were there for, weren't they?

If there was a class that Eddie should get permission never to take it was this one. How dare the school still teach this worthless subject. His family's influence and money couldn't even get rid of it. So he cranckly went into the classroom and just gave a little nod to the professor.

Turning he looked around at the posters as he glanced at the other classmates. He was dreading this class, he couldn't even think about what he could actually learn here. Sitting down he put his things down and just waited for it to end.

Yay, Hamlet! • Cathopper • Disney Fanatic • I was normal once...

Flynn had a rough morning getting up, to say the least. He had been feeling sluggish since Monday morning, and now he was starting to get congested. Got to love this winter weather, am I right?

Not only did he end up wearing his glasses to class today (contacts were a no-go), he also brought along a hot cup of coffee to keep him warm. He was feeling much colder than usual (probably because he was getting sick), and he was mentally thanking the Professor for the fire she had started in the classroom. He was going to make sure to get a seat closest to the warmth of the flames.

"Hey," he greeted the Professor before finding a seat. Oh yeaah, he was sounding stuffy. As he sipped on his coffee, he looked up at the posters. Sports. They were going to be learning about sports. He kept sipping on his coffee because that was the only thing giving him life right now.

Oh boy was she grateful for the warmth emanating from various sources as she entered the Muggle Studies classroom. Cassie might like the winter season, but even still, the cold could get to her and the weather seemed to be particularly blustery lately. “Good day, Professor,” she greeted with a polite smile despite the older woman’s own being absent. In fact, she appeared to be a little out of it but she wasn’t about to quizzical, especially when Professor Stewart wasn’t totally distant with responses to others before her.

Taking an open seat to settle down and be ready for the lesson, the sixth year took in the posters hanging around the room. “I’m thinking we’re talking about muggle sports…” Cass mused aloud as she took out some parchment. Certainly seemed that way to her. Cycling…soccer or football…and the last one.

The first thing Clara noticed was the fire in the room, making it feel very warm and toasty. She took a seat a bit far away from it since she had a tendency to doze off if she got too comfortable.

The second thing that stood out was the presence of posters. All related to sports and tournaments and games and the like. Clara restrained herself from reacting too dramatically and resorted to internally groaning. She was the least athletic person she knew and could not catch anything with her hands even if her life depended on it. Still, learning about it couldn't be that bad, right? As long as there was no, er, practical activities.

"Hi, Professor. Looks like we're talking about...Muggle sports?" she said.

Why did you make it sound like a question? You do have one Muggle parent, after all.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy entered the classroom with a grin. "Hello there, Professor!" She made her way to a seat, noticing the posters of Muggle sports. It reminded Daisy of her Muggle father and how he loved watching those sports on the TV. Goodness, how she missed her folks.

There had been a moment when Stasya had thought about not going to the Muggle Studies lesson, mainly because she was afraid that the Gryffindor dorms would get destroyed in however long the lesson went on. Distractions weren’t good when she was trying to stay constantly vigilant, and since she hadn’t yet managed to ask any older students if they could cast an extension charm on her bag so she could carry all her belongings with her, she was nervous about leaving her post. Especially since most of her fellow guards also probably had class so it was leaving the common room unguarded aside from pets, and she didn’t trust whoever or whatever had gotten to the other dorms not to hurt animals. Someone had hurt creatures to get the blood for the entrance hall paintings after all, and that was what had bothered her about it all the most.

She’d noticed the change in Professor Stewart’s expression, too. Or, the absence of expression. The absence of the woman’s usual smile, and it nearly had made the second year turn right back around to go see if Professor Hirsch was in his office to ask him what she could do. Or just to report the weirdness, because she figured he was the best one to ask. Plus, he was kind of her personal protector anyway, whether he knew it or not.

But she didn’t turn around. She was going to be a brave Gryffindor. “Hi Professor Stewart!,” she greeted her, giving her her usual bright smile as she made her way to her usual seat. At least she could smile. Plus, she’d given Jessa and Kyle grins too, as she passed them at their own seats. She’d just have to go see the DADA professor after class to ask him if he knew why the other professor was acting weird.

His mind firmly on his own stuff as he entered the classroom with his own cup of coffee, Ronan didn't even notice the posters on the wall or that Professor Stewart seemed completely out of it. Nor did he notice that he'd sat, not in his normal seat in the front row of class, but beside Flynn, the old Slytherin man trapped in the body of a teenager. He didn't notice that said seat neighbor sounded like he was stricken with a cold. Nope, the teenage Gryffindor was just lost in his own thoughts.

Needless to say, he hadn't greeted the professor either.

The silver-haired man made his way down the first floor corridor and into the classroom, bright blue eyes twinkling momentarily as he took in the atmosphere. It brings back memories of his first day of Muggle Studies all those decades back, except that now this room is a lot warmer, both literally and aesthetically. A credit to its current instructor.

Speaking of which, Corin found her at her desk "Ms Stewart." he murmured a cursory greeting, glancing at her as he walked by. She seems... deep in thought. Not unusual for the cerebral kind, as Professors are. He gave a kind smile at the students already present as he made his way to the furthest seat at the back of the classroom, not wanting to be any kind of intrusive for today's interesting lesson, if the posters were anything to go by.

So...Derf had been on edge juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust about every Muggle Studies lesson this term for REASONS. Rumors attributed to it, but it was hard NOT to see the justifications in the rumors given the BLOODY writing and then things in the Restricted Section...

...and yet...the Board of Governors continued to seem to be more concerned with what was going on inside the classrooms rather than out - as he could only ASSUME given the presence of the grey haired bloke who had walked into the classroom just before him.

Ruffling his hair, he checked to make sure his pocket was shut tight and then strolled into the classroom. Of course he took note of the posters - soccer?
Also...why were those people riding bikes through a sunflower field? - but his attention drifted primarily to Professor Stewart herself who...er...looking kinda glum. Maybe some bad eggs at breakfast or something?

"You okay, professor?" he asked sheepishly, opting to take a seat by Stasya for the lesson.

Maisie entered the Muggle Studies classroom with her books in her arms. Her uniform was tidy and her wand was tucked into her skirt pocket.

“Hello Professor,” She said.

She looked at the posters. Maisie’s heart sank. She wasn’t a fan of sports, and she didn’t think Muggle sports would be any different. She’d heard of bicycles though, and she loved the sunflowers.

Maisie took a seat in the front. She was still small and she didn’t want to get stuck behind a Seventh Year and not be able to see or hear what was going on.

Sorry about the magic? Kay had been quite aware that some of the kiddos used the Charm to help keep themselves warm. She simply nodded. “That’s fine, Miss Cambridge.’’ Her eyes moved to the soccer poster. “Actually, I acquired that poster at the last minute since I was unable to get one with ‘football’ written on it. I decided to leave it with the word soccer.’’ Eyes returned to Jessa. “I was wondering who would be the first to notice that. Excellent observation.’’

Ah, Edward. Kay knew all about his resentment for the subject she thought. It used to bother her but at that moment, she couldn’t care less. She returned the acknowledgement with a nod of her own.

The exceptionally bright smile that Stasya gave her seemed to have gotten through to Kay. For a brief moment, it occurred to her that the kiddos must be wondering what was wrong with her. Only the staffers and Emmeline knew that her father had died just three days before last Christmas and she was still hurting. She tried to return the smile but just couldn’t so she settled with just saying “Good morning, Ms Dalgaard-Volkova.’’

It wasn’t until Ronan had taken his seat did Kay notice him. Had she missed his greeting or hadn’t he bothered saying anything? Either way, he was still on time for the lesson.

...and yet...the Board of Governors continued to seem to be more concerned with what was going on inside the classrooms rather than out - as he could only ASSUME given the presence of the grey haired bloke who had walked into the classroom just before him.

“Hello, Ashburry- Hawthorne. Yes, I’d like to think that I am. Thank you for asking.’’

Maisie took a seat in the front. She was still small and she didn’t want to get stuck behind a Seventh Year and not be able to see or hear what was going on.

“Hello, Ms Dimple.’’ Did Maisie look disappointed when she noticed the posters or was it just Kay’s imagination?

“Welcome to another Muggle Studies lesson, everyone,’’ Kay began the minute she closed the door to the classroom. “As you would have no doubt noticed the posters on the walls and as some of you have guessed, we will be discussing Muggle sports.’’ She stepped closer to the rows of students to get a better look at them and to ensure they were all paying attention. “If you recall, last term Professor Newton and I conducted a joint lesson on the importance of the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy. We expounded on how essential it was to protect our world.’’ But was it really that important? Didn’t Muggles deserve to also be let into the secret? Shouldn’t the witches and wizards be more considerate to Muggles?

“Now, there is a particular clause within that Statute regarding Muggle sports and the wizarding world. Can anyone recall what it is and do you agree with this clause? If you do not know the answer, you are welcome to make an educated guess as to what it may be.''

OOC: The lesson has officially begun You're free to post late arrivals if that suits you; just be aware of the IC consequences We shall continue in 24- 27 hours!

Muggle sports, riiiiiight. This would be interesting. Natalie didn't have particular interest in wizarding sports (perhaps she was too young), so she wasn't sure if she'd like muggle sports any better. But she was interested, yes indeed.

As for there being something in the Statute of Secrecy about muggle sports... well, she had no idea. Why would there be? Were they not allowed to play muggle sports? Or maybe they just weren't allowed to play muggle sports WITH muggles because they might be BETTER than them. Hmm. She didn't know and she didn't want to make a guess and sound stupid, so Natalie opened her notebook and waited for others to answer to find out.

Sports. Blah. Hattie dislike sports. She was not a sport person at all. The fact that she wasn't allowed to fly due to her medical condition only made the fact worse. But she did actually know the answer to this. She had decided that it was important to know about the statue of secrecy, especially since it was her OWL year. So she was feeling pretty good right now. Nobody had said the answer either. So she was feeling pretty good. She could totally get it right first. Not that it mattered about having to be first. But it was quite nice.

So she quickly put her hand into the air. "We, as in witches and wizards are strictly forbidden from taking part in muggle sports" which made sense since they could totally use their magical skills to their advantage. And that would just not be fair.

With no hesitation, Viv perked her head up. Muggle sports? "Professor, are we learning about hockey or baseball by chance?"
Being a Muggle-born, Viv's mother had strongly believed in the Statute of Secrecy. But she wasn't against Muggles, she was a Muggle-lover! "It's clause 73, professor. I disagree with this. We should all be included in sports.

Sarah thinks I'm cute | Shan's safe space.

Wait... They weren't supposed to participate in sports? Felicity blinked a little a Hattie's answer, before raising her own hand into the air. "The whole, not taking part thing, does that mean we can't at all or does it just mean we can't compete?"

So, it wasn't an answer, but Felicity needed to ask the question, and she offered an apologetic smile at the Professor, hoping that she wouldn't be annoyed. Either way, it sucked. Majorly. So unfair.

But...er....."Okay." Was all the Ravenclaw could manage to reply. Seemed to her that if anything it would be the opposite of what the Professor explained, given the country likely manufactured things that said football as opposed to sourcing it from someone who'd gotten it outside of the country but Jessa didn't feel like arguing it.

It didn't matter, the focus of the lesson wouldn't take them back into American territory as the previous term did and she was honestly too tired to follow anything up.

Bad enough they were asking about statutes. She knew of the one the Professor was referring to but as others had already provided the answer, she would simply give her input.

"It makes sense, Professor. With magic added to any muggle game, the scales become ridiculously tilted. Sure, we could promise not to use magic while playing but not everyone's a fair player and some people are rotten at losing. Who's to say in the final minutes they don't lose it and end up jeopardizing the secret entirely?"

Ohhh, muggle sports! That seemed like a super awesome and interesting topic to learn about. Maddie knew a little about muggle sports, but she hadn't played a whole lot of them or anything like that. She looked at the posters on the wall. She liked the flowers in the last picture best of all!

There was talk of some joint lesson they'd done last year, but Maddie was a firstie and didn't know anything about that. As a matter of fact, Maddie had no idea what the answer was and was just going to give a BIG OLE wild guess! She raised her hand in the air and waved it about as if she had the best and most correct answer EVERRRR. "Isn't it something about concealing the sports and where they're played?" she asked. "You can't just build a quidditch pitch right in the middle of...let's say...the parking lot of a muggle mall!"

dream until your • dreams come true ~ Human pygmy puff

Class was officially started and it seemed that muggle sports would be the topic of the day, as expected. They were off and running as the first question was posed. This.......required some serious thought on Shay's part. The International Statute of Secrecy was a very tricky thing. This had been made clear by the many "heated" discussions they had had on the subject so far. When it came to sports, it got even trickier. She had probably broken the statute a million times. As a witch with a muggle parent, living in the muggle world and going to muggle schools, how could she not?

Jessa made a good point though. There were plenty of witches and wizards who could and would participate in sports without using magic. But of course there were those who would inevitably use their abilities for their own selfish gain........the few that would mess things up for everyone. That's why it was so tricky. Could you risk the safety of the wizarding world for those who didn't know how to play nicely? Quite the dilemma. Shay raised her hand and slowly began. "I don't particularly agree with the clause, but I get it. With magic involved, there would be an unfair advantage........and you can't trust everyone not to use their abilities to have an advantage. Still, I think there should be some happy medium. There has to be some way for witches and wizards to participate in muggle sports. I'm just not sure how that could be done."

Considering how every other time the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy had been brought up in class they had been pointedly told to drop the subject...Derf was perplexed. But for good reasons? Maybe NOW they could actually have an open forum of sorts to discuss the Statute and such? It was something he had been disappointed about in the past, opinions being muted and such.

The third year was mostly just listening though, since most people had given all the information he knew already. His eyes WERE drawn to the older Slytherin with the neat eyebrows again - the ones he was still waiting to go all pupa one day - and her question. "Compete," he nodded while sitting up a bit more straight in his seat. "We are allowed to support a Muggle side and stuff."

Muggle Studies usually proved to be somewhat interesting, even if it wasn't entirely relevant to herself as a witch. She did, however, beam at the sight of various sports posters on the walls of the classroom when she had entered, her mind wandering about the possibility that they might get to play a sport!

It wasn't until Professor K Stewart welcomed them, that the fifth year's attention snapped forward. Ah, so they were going to be talking about muggle sports, which hopefully meant more than just discussing them? And talking about the statute of secrecy? Oh no, they weren't going to have a debate about this again, were they? It seemed like anytime muggles were mentioned, some sort of debate broke out. What was next, allowing muggles into Hogwarts? She was okay with muggle-born witches, because they were witches, but full-bred muggles was a totally different ball game.

And then she heard Hattie speak up about being forbidden from competing in muggle sports. "Honestly, we have quidditch and gobstones, which are infinitely better than any muggle sports anyway." Really, so why would they WANT to play on the ground, when they could fly?! Which meant, she could care less about the clause forbidding them from playing.

You know where Vivian Fairfield was? Here, of course. Pssssh, she was totally in class all along. And she did notice the posters in front. One of them was soccer... and she wasn't quite sure about the rest, but she was positive that those were sunflowers. A confused look grew on her face. What does it have to do with sports?

Er, anyway. Vivian knew about the Statute, yes. Perhaps every single member of the wizarding world was made very aware of its existence. Because muggles and wizards don't always mix well together. But then Hattie's answer to the question totally took Vivian aback. So... they weren't allowed to participate in muggle sports? Weird. She raised her hand. "I see the point why this is part of the Statute, professor," Vivian nodded. "I kind of half agree and disagree? No use of wands, yes, but... if one wizard gets the twitchy feeling of using magic, then I guess it's up to his conscience?" Because Vivian wouldn't, of course. Playing against the rules always bothered her. Sort of. Only during Quidditch matches, sure. "The participating wizard would know the consequence, after all." Like a life sentence to Azkaban or something wasn't bad enough.

“You are all correct but unfortunately, Ms Awning, we won’t be delving into either of those today,’’ Kay replied, registering in her mind yet again just how knowledgeable her kiddos were. It never ceased to make her proud. “I’d like to point out that this does not fall under clause 73. That clause specifies the necessities of keeping magical beings, spirits and creatures concealed and within a territory’s borders.’’ She paused to gaze around at the class before continuing. “Even though we are forbidden to take part, we are allowed to choose a team we want to support.” That should answer Ms Harrington's question, as Derf had also mentioned. “Concealing our sports tournaments like the Quidditch World Cup is indeed a part of our Statute,’’ she continued with a nod at Maddie.

"Ms Cambridge, Ms Morrison and Ms Fairfield brought up the reason exactly why we aren’t allowed to participate. You see, our magical abilities put us at a huge advantage over the Muggle athletes. Though this clause has been in place, it has of course been breached multiple times.’’ The Professor moved to her whiteboard. “Two of the most famous breaches or suspected breaches occurred when there was a rumour about the real intention of the Wizarding Supporters of Scottish Rugby Union, an international organisation or fan club, if you will, for wizarding folks who are fans of the Scottish Muggle Rugby team. The suspected intention of that group was to have a gifted squib on every Scottish rugby team.’’ She made some notes on the board. “The second breach also involves rugby. Stuart Hogg, who was thought to be a gifted Squib, is actually a wizard. He began playing for the Scottish rugby team in 2012. Other wizards on the team were Kelly Brown and James Hamilton. For those of you interested in reading about this fascinating topic, you can refer to page 239 of your textbook.’’

Her own opinions on this matter? Kay understood just why these players were smuggled onto the team. Why bar witches or wizards from being apart of the Muggle world in this way? Why prohibit Muggles from knowing about the Wizarding world? The Statute, which she so strongly stood for last year, was now nothing more than an inconvenience. Like a few others, including Ms Morrison, she wanted to see there be some sort of compromise on this issue.

“What I would like for you to do next, is to share a bit of your knowledge about sports with myself and your classmates. Any particular sport that holds your interest? Tell us which and why. Do you support any Muggle teams? Do you have a favourite athlete? You’re not limited to these questions. For those of you, like Ms Diggory, who feel that wizarding sports and games are enough, how did you arrive to this conclusion? Feel free to give any information related to the topic.’’

OOC: We’ll move on in 24-27 hours. Have fun with your answers!
