Default Potage's Cauldron Shop

As you enter Diagon Alley from the Leaky Cauldron, the first thing you might see is the assortment of cauldrons stacked out the front and decoratively dangling from the small balcony. The large window will let you peek in to find rows and rows of Cauldrons, organised precisely by style, and size. Along with the stacked cauldrons out the front is a welcoming sign that reads "Potage's Cauldron Shop - All Sizes - Brass, Copper, Silver, Pewter, Self Stirring, and Collapsible."

Walking into the shop you will find rows and rows of cauldrons, anything you could need or want is there. Organized by size and style. The more expensive cauldrons will be found on the top shelves and the bigger cauldrons are always found in the back. Don't try to climb up the shelves to reach a silver cauldron though! The shopkeeper is there to help retrieve anything hard-to-reach. During summer months, as Diagon Alley prepares for all new and returning Hogwarts students, the shopkeeper makes it easy by having a school display right up front with the appropriate Hogwarts-approved cauldrons.

The shopkeeper also has a knack with cauldron repairs, should you have a crack, a hole, or any other damage. Still can't find what you are looking for? No problem, the shopkeeper is always ready to help out. Just head to the counter! If you don't see the anyone, just ding the small bell and it will ring to let them know someone is in need of assistance.

The forever-harrassed Healer River Reed found himself inside the cauldron shop, deciding whether he ought to keep his old copper cauldron or buy a new one. It had been his trusty pot since he could remember, but perhaps it was about time to retire it... or have it repaired and make it an extra cauldron for emergencies? OR he could let Kai have it for school when he's older and onto learning more complex potions at Hogwarts. While this all sounded like a good plan, the healer could not for the life of him decide. Besides, he pointedly left the old copper cauldron at home just to avoid making any rash decisions. That copper pot was extremely of sentimental value.

Anyhow, grateful that term has already started and the shop has cleared of excitable students, River perused the cauldrons on display, quite in disbelief as he checked the prices. Merlin, has it been decades since he graduated from school?

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

As a rule(which meant in general, Ash had recently learned), Ashley didn't make potions. She took them, but she didn't make them. So she had no real need for a cauldron most of the time. The most likely reason she would be in here would be because she was wandering around and not thinking very straight or focusedly. Or she might come in to sketch the cauldrons. But really, she DID have a proper reason to be here today. Her brother wrote to her claiming he had broken a brass cauldron and needed a new one. She was far from stupid, and knew that second-years only needed a pewter cauldron for class. And yet... here she was, buying him a brass cauldron for who knows what. She figured that he was making something.

She was not looking where she was going, because she was looking at the letter with the exact cauldron needed and also because she was Ashley and not paying attention half the time. As a consequence, she found herself bumping into an older(than her, at least) man. "I'm so sorry," she apologized anxiously. "...I promise it was an accident." Most normal people assumed that from the start, but Ash never assumed that people would give her the benefit of the doubt like that.

River had reached for the standard-sized number two pewter cauldron and sighed in disbelief. 15 galleons?! When he was a student, it was just about 5 galleons or something... but then again, back then, he wasn't all too concerned with the price considering he didn't have to work for the money to get his school supplies. Now, as a parent, his perspective about spending is way different from, say, when he was a teen.

Shaking his head, he'd placed the pewter back on its designated shelf just as somebody bumped into his person. As a healer, and overall a bulky 6-foot-something person, this was a normal occurrence-- desensitized even. "Oh careful," he said turning towards a young woman who looked very preoccupied. "It's okay, no harm done." he gave her a small smile, glancing briefly at the parchment in her hand. "Shopping for... school?" the term just started, so he thought she was a bit too late for it? But yeah, he wasn't one to pry further.

"Sorry." Ashley looked up at the man anxiously. Slightly less anxiously because he didn't start yelling. But she still worried a little. "I don't go to school," she said. It could have been interpreted as her skipping, or her having some big problem that stopped her from doing it, but really it was just that she was nineteen and did not go to university. She did not think to clarify. "My brother destroyed his brass cauldron and needs another. Which isn't true, but it's what he said when he asked for one." She did not think that was suspicious. She would probably also lie if she secretly wanted to brew potions, and anyways she didn't count it as lying if she could tell he was doing it.

"Are you shopping for school?" It was a joke, which was obvious because she smiled a little and she hadn't been smiling before.

That look of fear, unfortunately, was more than too familiar for this particular healer than he would like to admit. He'd come across so many patients who went through life experiences that were too much or too traumatic for them that they responded with excessive apologies or overly detailed explanations to defend themselves for even the smallest inconveniences. He'd seen a lot too, during his time at Hogwarts as the school healer. "Don't mention it," River did his best to sound reassuring, giving her his best and warmest smile.

"Oh me?" the healer let out a chuckle and shook his head. "I'm afraid I'm a tad old to be a student at this point. But I do still need a cauldron from time to time. It's part of my job." he said, stuffing his hands in his pockets. "I haven't been a student in so long, that I am in utter disbelief at these prices," he said, jabbing a finger at one of the cauldrons in front of him. "You said your brother needed a brass cauldron? Is he a potioneer?" maybe he could help her select a better cauldron for him.

"Okay." She paused. "It was an accident." Then she stopped saying sorry, because she decided that three was a good amount of sorrys to say and she didn't want to be annoying. She smiled a little. "What's your job?" Was he a potioneer? Healer? Something super secret?

"Prices go up over time," Ashley noted. "And school supplies are very expensive." She was not the best person to talk to about this. She had a lot of worries on her mind, but thankfully she'd never had to think about money(one of the only things she could thank her dad for). It was lucky, because Ash did not have any plans for if being an artist didn't work out. "My brother wants to be a healer. And he's just twelve. I don't know what he needs it for." She shrugged, unconcerned. "He probably wants to brew more advanced potions, maybe."

She could pay for his cauldron if he needed it, but she didn't want to suggest that just yet.

And while accidents happen, River decided not to press further on this matter. Her many apologies were considered and accepted, which was good enough for the healer. At least they still raise good kids with manners in this side of the neighbourhood, eh?

River was aware that school supplies were expensive, and that prices do change over time, but it has been so long since his last purchase of something that didn't require frequent replacement such as a cauldron. And speaking of a pot, River tilted his head at his companion, amused. "Twelve?" a second year, more or less, and in need of a brass cauldron. "That, and I suppose he wanted his potions to come out with a higher quality, but that is quite counter-intuitive if you think about it," River said, smiling as if he knew something was up. "If he wanted to become a healer, I would suggest he keep practising with pewter ones first." he continued, tipping his head slightly. "Healer River Reed, at your service."

Good kid with manners was not the first thing Ashley would think of to describe herself and her upbringing with. It was more like 'messed up and the worst'. Though manners was not incorrect. Good kid... she didn't think so.

"Yes, twelve," Ashley said. She almost held up twelve fingers to show him but she didn't because she didn't HAVE twelve fingers and she thought it would be rather strange to say twelve and show ten fingers. "Maybe I'll get him a pewter cauldron now, and then later when he's ready I'll get him a brass one and surprise him with it." Easy gift idea! She was proud of herself.

"Ashley Fox." She hesitated. "The artist."

"...pleased to meet you, River. I mean... Mr. Reed. Sir." Because he could have been her dad(only he was alive and probably a little younger and definitely less scary but that was completely off topic to her point, which was that he was old enough for her to automatically want to call him sir). Had she gotten all the important introduction things in? She felt like she had. Name, job, and greeting. She was good at this.

Perhaps not, but at least for this young woman's sake, she was doing really well. Manners maketh wo/men, was it not? And if River was going to be honest, he's had had a handful of obnoxious and unpleasant students. Sadly, most of the said students were about this young woman's age. River's stint at Hogwarts many years ago made him look like he was simply babysitting a bunch of kids. "That's a good plan. Maybe your brother will work even harder at Potions if he knew what he would get in the end." A little push at encouragement can do wonders.

"It's nice to make your acquaintance, Miss Ashley Fox the artist." River smiled at her warmly, noting that he really hasn't met many artists in his life. Well, mainly because he was always tending to old patients and most of them were not artists-- which probably is fortunate. "Ah, Mr. Reed. That would be either my brother or my nephew. 'Sir' is my father, so that won't do. You can just call me Healer Reed," he said leaning ever so slightly, "There are too many Mister Reeds in the family you see. I would like mine to be a bit different." he said shrugging nonchalantly.

"So, you're an artist. What medium, if I may ask?"

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

It was probably good that Healer Reed wasn't the healer when Ashley was at Hogwarts. She was... a frequent hospital wing visitor, and an occasional St. Mungo's visitor, and she definitely did not have very good manners for at least the first three years. She felt it was forgivable, though. There had been Extenuating Circumstances. "I don't know, my brother doesn't really work for rewards." Other than food, but that wasn't something she wanted to explain. "But I guess it couldn't hurt. I should ask him if he likes surprise presents or expected presents better." And insist that he give her an answer other than 'I don't mind, I love everything you give me' because that meant she had to choose and choosing was stressful.

"Thank you," she said, looking a little happier. Ash always got a extremely slightly good feeling when someone said it was nice to make her acquaintance. It was just greetings, of course, but she still got a feeling of importance. And since Ashley had much below average important feelings, it made her a little more confident.

"There are a lot of Mr. Reeds in your family," Ash noted curiously. She could count... four. And they weren't all in the same immediate family. Her family had only one Mr. Fox(her little brother and her littler brother didn't count), and her dad died just in April. And she'd never really had a big family. And there was only one Miss Fox. Thus, she found it fascinating that he had so many family members who were men called Mr. Reed. "Healer Reed has a nice ring to it." Possibly because of Healer ending with an 'r' and Reed starting with an 'r'. Or because Reed sounding like a plant and plants were healing. River Reed was a good name to have for a healer, she decided instantly, despite having never thought about it before.

Ashley was a good artist name, she felt(she was biased). And being an artist was central to every single positive part of Ashley's identity, and her recent art show was one of the few things that made her feel like a special and important person. It was obvious from the way her eyes lit up at the question that Words were coming. "I like to paint! I like to paint people and the ocean and flowers and abstract things! And- and- I like painting everything. But I also sketch! And I try sculpture sometimes but it's not art, it's just making funny-looking bears because I think it's fun to do." She took a really deep breath, because she couldn't breathe. "And I had an art show and I sell my art sometimes and it's also all over my house and my favorite colors are gray and purple and blue and my favorite thing to paint is people." She stopped talking, giving him an apologetic smile. He had only asked about the medium. But she couldn't resist telling him everything about everything, she was just too excited. She felt things very passionately, so when she was excited about something she was thrilled.

Alyx walked into the shop holding many items in her trunk, not yet knowing how to store items in a magical way. She needed a cauldron for school, and she honestly wasn't sure she would be able to carry it. She felt stupid.

"Can someone help me, please?" She yelled, hoping for someone's pity.

She stammered this question, hoping there was a magical solution to her problem.

Pushing the door open to step into the shop, Drake visibly winced at the lines and lines of cauldrons and the daunting task ahead of him of having to choose one. A new cauldron had not been on the list of expenses for the summer, but thanks to a uh …. Small mishap at the end of the previous term, his used one was shot and the upgrade had to happen. Some of Drake’s own allowance money was going towards it too - an incentive to keep the next one in good condition, according to his mum. But if you asked the 13 year old, it was simply a punishment.

One he kinda deserved though so he couldn't argue TOO much.

With a heavy sigh, the curly haired boy started up the first aisle, quickly crossing most of it off of his list at the prices on noted on the tags attached to each potion instrument.

What was the likelihood he could get away with a baaaaarely functioning one from the junk shop?

Some of Drake’s own allowance money was going towards it too - an incentive to keep the next one in good condition, according to his mum. But if you asked the 13 year old, it was simply a punishment.

One he kinda deserved though so he couldn't argue TOO much.

With a heavy sigh, the curly haired boy started up the first aisle, quickly crossing most of it off of his list at the prices on noted on the tags attached to each potion instrument.

What was the likelihood he could get away with a baaaaarely functioning one from the junk shop?

Jan was returning to this shop.. after a couple years. With his little brother now old enough to start Hogwarts, his parents allowed him to get a new cauldron if he could part with his old one. Easy choice there! But the problem was.. could he get a better type than pewter? He walked into the first aisle glancing at his 3rd year shopping list when he collided into someone.

"Woah, sorry," Jan said, shaking the strands of hair out of his face before looking at, "Oh.. hi Drake." He said heating up at how embarrassing it was. First, colliding with someone and two not realising his dormmate and friend was already in here. "Erm, you're alright? I didn't hurt or mess anything up, did I?" It didn't look like he was carrying anything other than a parchment as well. "..Are you shopping for a new cauldron, too?"

Drake was staring at a few of the cauldron prices, as if just willing the numbers to change before his very eyes. Was that something that he could just… make happen? Like his first shows of magic that had been spontaneous and without a wand? One never knew unless they tried, right? He was so enraptured in his task too, he didn’t notice someone else coming down the aisle until they bumped into him. His balance hadn’t been the greatest, so he staggered slightly into the display in front of him and gave a small yelp as he caught two teetering cauldrons.

Turning his head, Drake was absolutely thrilled to see the familiar face and his sigh of relief was evidenced of that. “Jan!!” A physically affectionate person, he would have hugged his dorm mate if it weren’t for the items currently in his grasp now - which he carefully began to put away. “Everything’s fine!” He quickly assured, before nodding at the question. “Want to shop together? I’m betting you know waaaay better on how to properly pick a cauldron! I can’t really see how they’re different.” Did they hold a potion? Yes? Excellent - top notch in his book. That was all he knew.

"Oh good," That was a relief to Jan, as much as it was to reunite with his friend and dorm mate. Shop together? "Sure we could! I was getting myself a new cauldron so my little brother can have my old one," He blinked a few times at the suggestion of him knowing more. "Well.. I don't know too much, but it wouldn't hurt if we get a bigger cauldron than last year." The types though, "The list doesn't say we have to stick with pewter this year.. but I think these are for more advanced potions." He wondered aloud. "I wonder what we'll get the brew this year... I hope it's something useful for us," There were so many choices ahead of them here.
