Default Charms Lesson 1: Color my world

It was charms afternoon for the students and the door was open and ready to have the students enter. Professor Primeaux is always one for punctuation and control so there should be no surprise that the room is clean, lit well, and set up in an organized fashion. What might be different is that he has student easels placed where the desks should be.

On the easels there is a white canvas and finger paints at each station. Looking more closely you will find no paint brushes. Just every color paint you can think of. Had the professor been pranked by peeves and that's why there is paint and art supplies in his charms room or was Professor Primeaux finally losing his marbles?

On the board you will notice a sign from Professor Primeaux but no Professor was found in the room.

Quote:
I will be there shortly, please while I'm gone use the finger paints to make your best project. If you can't draw it is fine, look at mine. This isn't a joke it is how I actually draw and paint things. Make sure whatever you make it is school appropriate. This is not for a grade, I will not collect it, but you are expected to do your best and try.

Lesson progression:
Paint with a brush
Animatae
Figura
Colovaria
Go on and color the castle

Thank You for being patient!

Julien was not comfortable paint in this room, but his effort was to try and reach some of the more hands on students and different levels of learning. He would soon show them why it was fun to know charms. Charms were an amazing piece to life if you knew the right things to do.

Though it didn't seem like Daxton was the only one that felt the need not to do anything. There were a few. Seriously did parents not teach respect anymore or you know if instructions are given shut up and just do them when it is a Professor. He stared at the first year a bit, the over eager one that seemed to now have an attitude on top of it..

"The point is to learn why we do what we do. I can give you words and movements all day, but do you truly understand why you need to do it. Can you appreciate it that way? I can answer for you, no, you can't. In my classroom I do things to hep all learning styles learn as well as give explanation and examples behind the learning." Though she should have known that by now. It was November and classes had been going on. "Please focus on your creation so you can really know the why soon."

Merlin....

When Blaise spoke up the vein that was about to pop went down again and a rare smile crossed his lips. "You are still young yet Blaise, you keep working on Incendio and you will get it. Working hard to achieve something don't make you a slow learner nor does it make it out that it is harder for you. It just means you are dedicated and determine to succeed. Charms do make your life easier. What if you are somewhere there is no other way to get fire, but with your wand? Will you just freeze because you can't start the fire by rubbing two rocks together? We have a very lucky gift with magic that we should embrace and try our best to master. Before teaching and even now I do love to experiment with charms, try to make new ones that can help with life."

He glanced at the rest of the class. "What Blaise is saying speaks lots of truth for younger wizards. You are use to using tools that aren't magic so it does come easier. I myself will pick up a broom once in awhile, but if I can just stay in my chair and wave my wand wouldn't that be easier? Now I had you start with finger paints because as a young child you probably have finger painted. It's messy, it's fun for the child, and it drives parents and adults nuts. Perfect combination, but what if you could bring that finger paint to life or at least make it seem that way. I saw a hand earlier what if that hand could wave?" He turned and flicked parchment to the board and went over, "I'm not a good artist, but if I was going to make a stick figure person and wanted him to walk I could either draw or paint a few stick figures to indicate he was walking or use magic." Lifting his wand he he traced the stick figure, " Animatae"

Watching the stick figure move around the page he finally glanced at the class. "Is this more of an entertainment thing then making our lives easier, yes, but isn't it more interesting then just a standing still figure? You can use the drawing that you have already made or you can make a new one, but please go ahead and bring it movement. The wand movement is just tracing your drawing and then saying the words, Animatae." Not where he was going to start with the lesson, but teachable moments.
Gulp!Well, that would figure... She would of course had to have irritated the professor straight off. Granted she thought he was just a bit touchy... Note to self... Try ever so hard not to get on this teacher's bad side... Which totally meant she would thoroughly annoy him nearly every time he'd see her from now until end of term. So, she sat there just slightly humbled and listened to his explanation... Made total sense and she now felt like an idiot... So she got a purple crayon and drew a little stick figure girl and pulled out her wand. she went over the way to say the charm mentally then cleared her throat, "Animatae." and traced her stick girl. There she went dancing along the bottom of the page back and forth....

"Mum wouldn't let me go somewhere that has no fire unless she's found another way of keeping me warm and knowing I can't cast means I wouldn't be where there's anything cold." He explained, an almost stoic expression on his face. By now, Blaise had come to understand and accept that he would never depend on magic to save his butt. He would either find another way or die.

Granted, his wand occasionally did things during those duels he was still forced into but that was a controlled environment. Fat chance of him depending on his wand in the real world.

The boy watched the stick figure come to life...sorta. It was only animated.

Were he less experienced in how this sort of thing went, Blaise might have been filled with hope at the sight of a First Year getting the spell right on the very first try but he knew better. Furthermore, while he did skip these lessons, he did keep up with the reading on his own and sometimes went on ahead. Animation happened to be an advanced form of charms work. Kudos to her for getting it so soon but for him, it wasn't likely to happen.

Let's forget that it was advanced magic for a moment, the Charm wouldn't work for him because he had no wand to practice with. Blaise stood, staring at his easel and the line he'd painted. Perhaps he could will it into motion on his own. Merlin knew that'd be the only way it would move at this point.

He stood there watching Blaise, his glances might be going to Daxton and of course the rest of the class, but he was watching Blaise. "Unfortunately as much as we as adults and parents want to protect our children there might come a time where it isn't your mother who placed you somewhere you might need a fire. There are dangers all over, you could get lost, taken, try to run away." Plenty of dangerous things even in the castle could happen that the boy would need his wand to save his life.

He turned to see that Miranda had done it on the first try. Impressive for a first year, but not fully out of the ordinary here. "Very good Miranda, this spell is a basic animation. There are many charms that can make the art work do many more things, but lets start with the basics at the moment."

Turning back to Blaise he couldn't help but notice he hadn't even brought out his wand. "You do have your wand today don't you? It is needed for every charm lesson. A wizard should never go anywhere without it." If he didn't have it there really was no point of being in class today.

Well if that was the case then he would die, definitely, no question about it. Only way out would be if his friends were in the same place freezing too because then they could share body heat and even better most of them knew how to cast 'incendio' by now. This was why it was so important to have friends, they could literally be the difference between life and death.

The man's questions drew him from his thoughts. Wand? His wand?

"I know," about the wand being needed every lesson that is,. Why else would he skip so frequently? "but to be fair, I wasn't planning to attend in the first place. This was all last minute. Took me completely by surprise when I least expected it." Nevermind that this was a core subject that happened to be mandatory. Having had no intention of showing up, the boy had left his wand in his trunk--as he did most every other day of the week. It wasn't his fault Professor Airey had forgotten to make sure his wand was present before hauling him here. This was why you left well enough alone students that were trying to hide.

And all at once he saw it, the opportunity he'd been hoping for. The most innocent of expressions settled across his features as he looked to the man in feigned earnest. "It's currently in my trunk Professor. I'd be more than happy run up to my Common Room for it." Mhmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Her eyes grew huge and despite being a teen, Hadley Denaker suddenly looked like a child again.

"YES!" She realized immediately how loud that came out. "Err, sorry Professor. Just excited to learn this spell, I guess."
And she was. She'd been wanting to learn how to animate paintings and doodles since she learned it was possible. Eagerly, Hads fished her wand out of her pocket and aimed it at her painting. Suddenly she was really annoyed at herself for making it so big and complex. Perhaps she could animate the squid first then the whale then the ship of sailors? "Uh, Professor Primeaux? If we have multiple things making up a whole picture, can we trace one thing at a time or does it have to be the whole picture as one?"

Dot cast a brief glance at Blaise before returning to the rudimentary hopping... sock? Maybe? Whatever it was, she'd drawn a blobby shape with eyes on her page and was finally able to wipe the green paint from her fingers with a little shudder of distaste.

How Maddie and Dima did that... was beyond her. She could handle chalks and pastels, but paint was so... painty.

At the professor's instruction, Dot raised a single eyebrow without comment. They were learning to animate? Was he in cahoots with the Muggle Studies professor? Why were they all obsessed with cartoons this term? "Animatae," Dot traced her wand over the... sock... and watched it hop helpfully across the page.

"Merlin." She was not an artist.

Miranda perked a bit that she had gotten it on the first try, but it wasn't at all unusual for her to be quite gifted with charms... Since Professor Primeaux had shown her the cutting charm she was practically a natural. So, Poo to the jealous boy with the attitude and yay to Miranda for rocking the animation charm the first go. Still she had to take a moment and pop her own puffed up head and humble herself and wait for further instruction.
" Sorry, Professor" She said.

Azura looked at the sun she had drawn as well as the tree she has added to her little landscape, one single tree mind you! Not a forest! She has been about to draw a little house and a river, but as the Professor spoke she regarded her painting unsure of what to animate!

She picked up her want and slowly traced it around the sun as she said "Animatae" She blinked a little as her sun started to move around! Ohh! She had done it!

Glancing over to see her sister's artwork, Esme smiled and gave her a thumbs up. Juno wasn't really into painting so it was no real surprise that she had gone down that route. They had both done well.

Making use of the towel that had floated over to her, Esme listened as Professor Primeaux talked about how charms could really make life easier. Yep. Nothing to disagree with there in her opinion, though she knew that the muggle method of things could be convenient as well. Blaise had a point there. It depended on the situation was all.

Picking up a paint brush, she added a little dog to the meadow. There. Now she was completely finished her work of art and ready to add some animation to it. She was reminded of the photograph that she had brought to life last term with the help of Hady. It had been an exciting moment for her and she had used the spell a number of times since. There should be no difficulty in mastering this spell as well. The only thing was... she didn't know where to start because there were a few things that she could animate, namely the clouds and the dog.

Haddie voiced what she had wanted to know, so Esme waited quietly to see what the Professor would have to say. She wanted to do this correctly.

Juno looked over at Esme's painting and wished she was as good as her sister. But her painting was still pretty cool. Juno quickly cleaned off her hands and grabbed a paint brush and some hot pink paint. That would go well with the other colors she had.

But what could she paint? AH! A flamingo! She painted the pink bird right in the center of her art work, grinning. It was crazy and made no sense. She loved it. She quietly grabbed her wand out of her pocket. She focused all of her energy into her wand while tracing the outline of the pink bird, repeating, "Animatae!" Her bird flapped its wings and flew around her painting. She grinned a little bigger.

She loved magic.

For the most part, Brooklyn had chosen to focus on her dragon instead of listening to much of the lecture that the professor was giving. It had seemed mostly directed at the one boy, not the rest of them anyhow, and it was taking all her concentration to make her painted dragon up to her standards. She wasn’t about to get caught with a stick figure, even if she wasn’t a visual artist. Now, if they were being told to play instruments, or dance, she would have been in her element. Painting was not that, and she was a little irritated that classes seemed to be focusing on that very thing lately. Painting and drawing, as if that would help her pass exams later on.

She’d just barely put the finishing touches on her dragon when the discussion got relevant again. They’d finally gotten to the Charms part of the lesson, and inwardly she was proud of herself for having chosen a subject that it made sense to animate. Now if only she’d get to keep her painting, to add to her steadily growing dragon collection given the three figurines she’d brought back from the field trip. First, though, she had to actually try the charm. “Animatae,” she said quietly to herself, cleaning her paintbrush off with the towel she’d used on her finger earlier. “Animatae.”

Pronunciation down, she picked up her wand and traced the outer edges of her dragon. “Animatae,” she said once more, completely concentrating on animating the painting. Focus was always the important thing, and she sat back as slowly the painted dragon flexed its wings and moved.

Niomi completed her first stick figure, when Professor Primeaux started discussing how to make your drawing move. She was a little nervous about this. Charms isn't her best quality, but this spell seemed easy.

Taking her wand out, she tracked the stick finger, then said "Animatae". Her red stick figure came to life, walking and dancing beautifully. Niomi was so proud of herself.

Why was every lesson lately about cartoons??

Well, not every lesson, but... two now, which was two more than Jaemin really needed. Especially when they were based on drawing and painting... if they wanted to talk about Flipswitch or Universal Knowledge he was so down for that, but they just kept making him art and Jaemin did not art. Did not. No art. Couldn't do it.

Slowly, ever so slowly, the second year reached into his pocket for his wand again and traced the edge of his handprint, making careful loops around the scratched on legs and beak as well. "Animatae..." he murmured, watching as one of the fingers twitched.

That would do. He set his wand aside and just... waited.

Default Question for Professor!
Otter This World ♡ Catpurrccino ♡ Slotherin ♡ Pandamonium

The small fox peeking out from behind the tree was cute. So much so that the sixth year decided to clean her paint brush off on the rag that was meant for her hands and dip the brush into a different color. This time The color she had chosen was blue for which she made a small blue bird perched up high on a branch of one of her trees. After giving it a small beak and little legs in yellow she once more cleaned her brush before setting it down.

Just in time it seemed as the Professor was once again speaking about the lesson. Something about animating their drawings. Hadn't they done this once before several terms back? Hadleigh honestly couldn't remember for sure...maybe she had just read up on it somewhere. However she was positive today that this was a charm she'd be able to do and rather easily at that. Animatae. That was the incantation. It sounded so familiar. Even so she found herself repeating it in her head a few times before muttering it quietly under her breath to get the proper feel for it.

Pulling her wand from the holster at her wrist she took a good looking at her canvas. No really point in animating the trees and she wasn't sure the fox would work since it wasn't the whole fox. She was curious on that, it made for a good question. "Professor, would you be able to animate a part of the drawing if the whole object weren't visible? In my case if I wanted to try on the fox peeking out from behind the tree...would it work?" Hady asked raising her hand in the air. If it would she would give it a try next.

For the time being though she began tracing the online of the blue bird she had made with the tip of her wand, “Animatae." Slowly the tiny bird gave a little shudder, it's wings stretching outwards before flying off to another branch. It was simple yes but it was still pretty cool.

Was Brian done painting the pH chart according to Universal Indicator colours? Well, yes, actually. He was. But then the guy was talking more and really he wasn't so bothered and he did say they were welcome to draw ugly things so he'd just continue with chemistry colouring.

Maybe he'd do phenolphtalein indicator now. Yeah. Great idea.

And methyl orange.

He was so good at this drawing circles of colour on his canvas. Oh yeah. Only thing he could draw. He'd animate later. Or never. How do you animate a colour chart anyway?

They were going to animate their drawings too? That was so cool! Now Hattie had kind of wished she'd drawn a superhero, because then she could have made it fly across the table. She supposed she could draw another pictures, the Professor had told them they could, but that was just effort. Hattie just wanted to get to the magic bit. That was why she was so excited to be at Hogwarts, so that she could learn lots of magic.

Hopefully she would be able to do the charm! That was the important bit. She pushed her crayons away, and got her wand out of her bag. She was excited to the spell. She practiced tracing her drawing, so that she could get the wand movement right. After she decided she had gotten it right, she decided to to it out loud. Tracing her wand over her drawing she murmured "Animatae" and the flower started moving across her page.

"yaaay" The girl beamed, letting the flower dance across her table. Ooh. She liked it! She liked this spell!

Honestly this Charms class seemed way too similar to Muggle Studies for Emma's taste. Really first they started out with finger painting, and look at that, now that the professor had arrived they could move onto using a paintbrush.

After impatiently cleaning her hands form the messy finger paint, Emma added some palm trees and stars to her painting. It was a pretty enough scenery, even if it wasn't very related to charms. Oh well. Maybe Hogwarts charms just couldn't compare to Durmstrang charms. Finished with the painting she smiled as the Professor, Primeaux she thought his name was, introduced a charm. That would be fun!

Saying the incantation to herself a couple of times, Emma finally drew her wand and inspected the picture. What to animate indeed? It was just a landscape. But there were stars, she could have a shooting star, and maybe the palm trees could blow in the wind. That would be pretty also. Tracing a star first she said clearly, "Animatae". Quickly the simple star was transformed into a shooting star. Then Emma traced the palm trees and said the spell again "Animatae". The imaginary wind blew the trees, creating a nice scenery of swaying trees and shooting stars. Beautiful.

She laughed when Haddie said that she had just repainted her nails. Maybe so, but nail polish was far elegant than paint. But the professor entered the room before she could reply, putting their conversation on hold. He then proceeded to talk about the charm they would be using to bring their picture to life. Cool.

Kitty jumped as Haddie yelled YES! right next to her. Looked like she also thought it was cool, not surprising considering the epic scene she had just painted.

She proceeded to trace her bat drawing with her wand as the professor instructed. It was a strangely satisfying feeling. "Animatae!" The bat's green eyes sparkled with life and it flapped its wings. "Wow, I did it!" Usually she didn't get spells right on the first try but this was an exception. Kitty knew she would be using this spell a lot in the future.

Now she could watch Haddie bring her octopus to life.

Roo had very similar questions to the ones being asked by his peers and he waited for a response from their Professor for clarification. However, he did trace the part of his picture that was a light fixture with a spotlight. "Animatae!" And look, there it was.. His moving spotlight. HIS spotlight. The spotlight for him. His fame. Maybe he could get the curtains to flutter a little. He wasn't sure he wanted them to drown out the spotlight dancing around his picture of a stage.

"Professor? Is this how animated tattoos are done?" If not.. how were they done? He was interested in that.

Janelle listened to the conversation about the benefits of magic. She agreed with the professor. Magic definitely made things easier, if you knew what you were doing. Sure, it took time to get good at it.......but once you had some key spells under your belt, it was awesome.

And now they were going to learn to make their pictures move. Cool. Janelle wrote the spell information in her notebook. Then she was ready to give it a try. Tracing the thing to be animated, shouldn't be too hard so Janelle went right for the incantation. "An-i-ma-tae, An-i -ma-tae, Animatae", she said, just to get a feel for the words. When Janelle was finished, she turned back to her canvas.

Rather than create a completely new picture, Janelle decided to add some things to what she had already done? Grabbing her paintbrush again, she cleaned it and dipped it in some fresh paint. Then Janelle made a few birds in the sky. They were going to fly, if she did things right. Putting down her brush, Janelle took her wand and began to trace the outline of one of her birds. At the same time, Janelle said, "Animatae". As she had imagined, the bird started to move across the page. Janelle was soooo happy, she had gotten it on the first try. "I love magic", she said to herself.

They were going to learn how to make cartoons using magic? Cool! Fiyero carefully traced the outline of his owl with his wand. "Animatae." He waited for the owl to do something, but it just sat there. Was that it? Had he done it wrong?

He retraced the outline. "Animatae!" he said again, a bit louder this time. The owl spread its wings and flew across the page before returning to its perch. Whoa...if the owl could do that, Fiyero wondered what the rest of the picture might do.

He traced one of the apples on the tree. "Animatae." The apple dropped, bonking the owl on the head. Fiyero suddenly had to clap a hand to his mouth to keep from laughing out loud. "Wow! That was amazing!" he exclaimed. He'd have to remember to thank Professor Primeaux for teaching him that spell...

Olly had decided to draw a mermaid. It wasn't very good but it did look like a mermaid so he was proud of himself. There was a purple tail, a body, and a red hair that was floating around her head. He even painted the background the blue of the water as best he could. And it looked like he would be bringing his mermaid to life.

Animatae? It was basically just animate. They were just telling the portrait what they wanted it to do. It was dumb, Olly thought, but it was what he had to do. He took out his wand and traced the outline of the mermaid he'd just painted. It got blue paint all over the tip of his wand. Oops. He'd have to clean that off. "Animatae." And sure enough, the mermaid's tail started flapping. That was a pretty easy spell.

Kaycee was a mature student. Clearly. Anyone could tell by the fact that she once again was making a handprint turkey. Why? Because then she'd have fingerprint turkey and a crayon turkey to play with.

Mature prefect is mature.

She traced the handprint turkey with her wand and muttered a "Animatae." She followed up by doing the same with the crayon one.

Hehehe. Gobble. Gobble.

Julien watched as most of the students started to work. There were of course some that decided to challenge him. He might have to send out some extra owls to parents this term and not just when it was time for mark reports. His eyes hit Blaise first as the child decided to be very disrespectful.

"I do not think I have to remind you that classes are mandatory, especially your general classes such as potions, charms, and transfiguration. Missing out on these classes will land you in detention, falling behind, and possibly failing your year. I don't think your parents would be thrilled to get owls with those things in it about you or any about behavior in a class." He walked over toward him for a moment, "You will take out your parchment and write detailed notes for the remainder of class. You will do the painting by hand since you do enjoy the muggle way more and then after dinner this evening you will return to my office with your wand to show me what you have learned." The boy seemed to need the extra one on one practice anyway seeing from the last two terms.

That was all he was going to say for now, but he'd be watching, always watching.

Haddie amused him by her excitement. Seriously why couldn't everyone be this excited for class and learning. He enjoyed hearing someone so excited. "It's alright, you are doing well." He nodded and moved on to the next person.

Whoops.

Glancing at the next project he again was a bit amused. Though he did step back, because he couldn't handle all the paint. "Charlotte as much as your painting if going well, you really should try to animate it so you don't get behind." He wasn't going to discourage her from doing the work, but he didn't want her to get behind either. He pointed towards the board so she could see the word and movements.

"Whatever you trace will be what animates. So if it is just part of the project it will just be part that comes to life so to speak." He looked at her work and gave her an approving nod. Some of the class had such creativity and imaginations. It was a great thing to see.

What a brilliant question. Did everyone hear this prefect? He grinned, "Very good question. Five points to Ravenclaw for thinking above just doing the lesson." He was very impressed for the connection that the prefect had just found. "It is a very similar charm, but because tattooing is a different form of art and the charm needs to last longer then just a basic drawing the charm is more advanced and longer lasting then what we are doing today." Still he really enjoyed the questions and comments going on today.

Why were they all obsessed with cartoons this term? "Animatae," Dot traced her wand over the... sock... and watched it hop helpfully across the page.

"Merlin." She was not an artist.
Noticing another prefect he walked up behind her as she worked. "Very nice." He didn't care the level of talent that students had with drawing, he cared if they were working hard and doing what they were suppose to and above all learning.

"Esme your painting looks great. Now you just need to do the charm and it will start moving." He was impressed by the talent these students had. Better than his for sure.

"Very good Juno, keep up the great work." He moved on to the next student. Checking that everyone was on task before moving on.

"Brooklyn your drawing if very good. Do you do artwork often? Professor Finch has an art room that students are welcome to visit." If he could show students were to find their passions he would. Especially since he knew so many of them had other likes then just what was taught at school.

That would do. He set his wand aside and just... waited.
He knew Jaemin did not like art. They had this discussion before his class and he was watching him carefully as he approached. "Any effort you give it good in this room and remember there is always a purpose to what we are doing." He wanted to encourage, but also this was class and he was expected to do the work.

"Very good, very good." So many great projects he couldn't go past them without commenting.

A bat flying was impressive as well. Yes, this was all very good. "Good job Kitty." Very well done indeed.

"I'm glad you do." Magic was a great thing and he couldn't help have a smile on his face, yes class he was smiling. It was all because of them. He couldn't help but feel impressed in their work.

"Very good. Apples falling is a great project for this time of year." Apple pie was one of his favorites.

"Very good Olly, the tail is working nicely." Charms experts in this class, which meant they could move on. Yes, time to move on...

Mature prefect is mature.

Hehehe. Gobble. Gobble.

A turkey, how interesting, "Do you have American family members?" Just a guess since Turkey and November. Maybe it was just something she thought of, but he couldn't help but wonder if it was because of the season it was.

"Alright class, please look up here for a moment." He turned to the board and placed a blank canvas on it. "Now like I said you can use charms to make things easier. I am horrible at drawing, but with charms I can become a masterpiece. Now people do not get famous for their charmed artwork of course, no, that is for pure talent, but we can all have fun." Were they following? Especially the ones that you could tell by their face were not enjoying this at all. Turning to his canvas he pointed his wand. "You will want to think of the color you want your drawing, I am going to think about red. The incantation is figura and then the shape you want. So lets say I want to make a circle. I will take my wand and make the circle so it knows the size I want and then do the incantation." Turning to the parchment he moved his wand in a big circle motion, but made sure the circle wasn't perfectly round, "Figura circle" A perfectly round circle the size he had wanted appeared.

"Now using the next parchment on your easel go ahead and work on just making shapes. Remember to say the shape you want so that it will work."
