quill Muggle Studies Lesson One: Photography (Film Processing)

The Muggle Studies classroom appears entirely ordinary when you enter this afternoon. There are rows of tables facing the front with two or three chairs at a table.

On the very front table, there's assorted chemicals and paper types as well as a few distinct objects which might be recognizable to some. Your professor awaits you at the front donning a pair of safety goggles as she welcomes you and encourages you to take out your pencils and notebooks.

ooc: yes, remember this is Muggle Studies. No Quills. We'll begin shortly =) Lesson started! So please pretend as if you've been here the whole time!

It might have been her third or her fourth chocolate frog doodle before Lex actually looked up to figure what the Professor was saying. No surprize there they were still on about the photos and the terms that needed knowing. Just one question here, when she said they needed to know them did she mean for like....NEWT reasons?....'Cause these frogs wouldn't be helping very much with that.

Paying attention might have been a good idea; she'd even say something to make sure she didn't look distracted.

"Photo comes from the greek 'phos' meaning 'light' and graph....I dunno? Do we need that for the exam? Is it like picture or something? Would I fail without this?"

VERY serious question. Failure wasn't an option, you know?

Zahra was about to just die laughing. She had been trying real hard in the beginning, and she KNEW it was all her fault for not reading the text before hand, but man.... Professor H was LITERALLY (apparently) speaking Greek.

Hilarious.

At some point, Zahra's notes went astray, as did her imagination.

Tobias had definitely done the reading for this class... he thought... maybe? No no, he definitely remembered cracking the textbook open and going through it, but whatever information he'd picked up was LOST beneath mountains of history facts and spell theory and life path number interpretations and soooooooo many Quidditch plays. Basically, all his recent studying and reading had... backfired. Or, more likely, Toby had seriously underestimated just how much time he needed to devote to Muggle Studies.

But... he had a vague understanding of this question, so put his hand up.

"'Photo' is like... light-" as others had said "-and 'graph' is like... a drawing?" ... kinda like the Ian kid had said. But wait... "... Soooo does that mean a photo is kind of like a drawing made out of light? Especially when you have it on a camera display."

Soph was still sort of confused about stuff and wished she could stop time for a second so she could take out her textbook and read up on this stuff like she probably should have already, but nope. She was incapable of doing that, so all she could do was keep writing stuff down that sounded really important to know and try to make real sense of it later.

The professor was asking them about... Greek roots?

Sophie sighed quietly to herself. Mo would know the answer to these questions, she knew he would. He was a big nerd. She tried to channel him and recall anything he had said anytime he went on a little spiel about photography stuff, and... she couldn't recall anything about him analyzing the Greek roots for her. Not a single thing.

She liked Tobes' analysis, though, and smiled. People did not give him enough credit. He was really super knowledgeable and impressive, and Sophie very much wished it wouldn't be embarrassing for him if she clapped for him. But it inevitably would, so she refrained.

She definitely jotted a little note in the corner of her notes to remind herself to praise him highly later, though, and give him the recognition and credit he deserved.

Greek and terminology. It was safe to say that AJ was confused. Not something that she expected in a muggle studies lesson, but this photo business was starting to get pretty technical. Both Benny and Adi had said light, but it would be totally lame to repeat the same thing. She was lost.

AJ had learned when you didn't know the answer to something you made notes, and hoped that someone else did. So that was exactly what she did. Scribble, scribble, scribble with her pencil. She didn't want to get her quill vanished like last time.

Yep, yep that all made sense. A+ for her. Dorothy listened to the next question and raised her hand. "Photo is light, like photosynthesis. Uncle Henry says thats why its a good thing there's so much sun in Kansas, so our crops can grow." UH-HUH. Stuff made sense in Kansas. Unlike here. "And I think graph is to draw or write. Like CaliGRAPHy. So its like a light drawing! And that makes sense 'cause the film just records light." Which she had already said. In her OTHER correct answer. She was on a roll, yes she was.

So did she get a prize or something? She looked down at her feet. Ruby slippers would be nice.

Jasmine kept taking notes as the questions came quickly. Before she could think of an answer, another question was on the table. If she wasn't sure or wasn't fast enough, Jasmine just kept writing.

When the question about the meaning of photography was presented, Jasmine raised her hand. "Photograpy comes from Greek words that combine to mean drawing with light." They would be practicing photography today. How the drawing with light fit in Jasmine wasn't quite sure. Since this was the last question, she guessed she'd fond out soon enough.

Alright onto the next question, man this teacher was not fooling around. She was on a mission or something giving them lots of questions. She wanted to know what two greek words he knew and what they meant? What did photography mean? Well he needed to break it down. Kace thought photo meant something to do with light and such. Then -ography meant some type of art? He raised his hand and said his thoughts out loud. "Professor I know photo means like light and dealing with paper and -ography means it is like a type of art." That is what he thought it meant anyways.

Yeeeeeep the professor had lost her. It was now Gabriel type questions, and Ruby let her mind and her eyes wander. She looked over at Grayson...

and his ankle.

She hid a smile behind her hand and managed something resembling an innocent look.

And then she nodded. Yup. She sure did remember their deal. She sat up straighter and took a deep breath and wondered if he could tell... at least partly.

And maybe soon there'd be another question she could answer.

Okay so....David's parents were Muggles, you know? And so were his older sisters. And most of his life he'd assumed he was one - without that actual term of course since that was a wizard thing. So he SHOULD know all these technical terms and stuff...

...but he didn't. At least not all the specific details about this stuff off the top of his head or anything. And here he was thinking this would be an easy grade for him. Now he actually had to put some effort into this class, huh?

Bummer.

So yeah, he was taking notes for now.

Blah blah blah blah blah.

Yep, that's all he was hearing. EVERYTHING was going too quickly, and his brain couldn't keep up with these quick quick quick questions, so no, he would NOT be responding to ANY of them. He'd sit and wait until they could play with things and get their hands dirty - figuratively speaking of course.

Did this lady know there were first years in her class? Did she have to go so quickly?

Frankly, he wasn't even sure what they were talking about, and he wasn't keen to find out. As a muggle, all you needed to know, was how to take a photo, which was EASY PEASY, and then how to ask someone to develop them for you. Only the pro's did it themselves, and if you were a pro, then you'd know how. But MOST, didn't.

This lesson wasn't muggle studies... it was studies in things even muggles don't care about, that's what it was.

Disengaged, Zeke folded his hands in his lap and LOOOOOOKED as if he was listening, but all he heard was noise.

Well that was definitely an odd greeting ... first greeting too. Josephina blinked at the lion boy in surprise and just offered him a small comforting smile, "Not any crazier than you lot." She said, not really answering the question.

"Hello Kace! Welcome!" she beamed at the fifth year. "Alright thanks."

She offered a brief welcoming smile to Cutty, particularly when ... he framed her with his hands. Yes, she totally caught that hand-frame.

"Hello Lux!" She grinned at the happy hufflepuff.

"Morning..." Fina replied back, vaguely. Mostly because she wasn't sure if this was twin number one or two. Can she just call them both A?

"Hello Jasmine!" Fina beamed back at the seventh year; the girl always seemed so content to be there.

Someone looked excited to be there! She offered Gabriel a grin in return as he took out his notes and was seemingly well-prepared, which wasn't surprising for a Ravenclaw actually.

"G'day Sophie!" Fina greeted back, equally as cheerful.

It still felt surreal when students called her Professor Nairne, even though it was technically true for two years now. But she'd been Professor Hadley for way longer, so it was understandable, in her mind at least. "Hello Adi!"

"Hello Puck!" She greeted back.

"Hello Benny," she greeted, noting the way the boy seemed as he slipped into the classroom. Things were not what they seemed...

"Afternoon, Alexa." And then, came the question that she knew would come from the Head Girl of anybody.

She took her fingers and moved the goggles up and down on her face slightly. "Do you like them? I think they're quite a nice fashion statement. But no, no explosions, i hope. Just for protection." Though anything was possible with this lot in terms of explosions, she guessed, now that she thought of it.

Uh what? So Hadley was perpetually confounded by Ian's dialogue, but she just took it all with a grain of salt. Because this was Hogwarts and people did and said the darnedest things, yes? "Hello, and yes, we're immensely proud of you!" By Papa Gepetto, surely that was just a pseudonym for Mama Badger, yes?

"Afternoon, Grayson," she greeted back to the Slytherin, deciding that maybe he wasn't what she initially thought. Just maybe though.

"Hello Devlin. Welcome!" She grinned at the Slytherin boy who seemed unsure of her appearance or something ....

Well at least someone was smiling and it was none other than Zahra who smiled quite hugely, if Hadley was one to say so herself. "I'll keep that in mind when the time comes to photograph subjects."

"Afternoon, Toby," Fina grinned back at the fifth year who seemed to remember the name change. Which she would have been totally fine if he had even just called her professor, but that was just her.

Toto? Fina frowned when "Norah" glanced down at her basket , but she did smile at the girl's green. "Well of course I'm a good witch!" she nodded back; she wasn't no dark wizard or anything.

"Hello Marigold!" she beamed at her other prefect when she entered the class

"Afternoon, Eden," she greeted back to the claw.

"Hello dear!" Twin two? Or was she twin one? Fina couldn't remember now, but she was A. "Welcome and yes ... we just might be." Sort of.

"Alright everyone, we're going to go ahead and get started," she announced as she noticed a bit of chatter around the classroom. She waited a moment for the conversations to end as she stood up at the front of the classroom.

"I assume most of you have noticed the portraits that line the halls of our beloved school move. And talk and maybe the subjects disappear even." She paused. "In muggle portraits, however, subjects don't move. They're frozen on paper. But whether wizard or muggle, photography is a science and an art form. There are two distinct types of processing used to develop pictures, which depend on the camera in which the picture was shot with. Anyone have any idea of the types of photo processing?"

Okay, this professor wasn't crazy. She was actually very pleasant. WHOOH. Unfortunately, though, this class wasn't going to be as easy for Eden as she thought, because she didn't know anything about...photography. This was would actually be a ....learning experience. A true one. Because Eden knew NONE of this stuff.

Also. It was kinda' cool to see Charms and this class tie together so well, though. Hmph. School COULD be cool.

She flipped open her notebook and began to scribble away...notes and stuff. Photo...processsinss...NOPE. Eden had no clue. But lots of other people did, yep--

"In a way, yes. It's method of digital processing." So yes, sort of? it wasn't technically the processing type though.

"For film processing, which is what we'll be specifically focusing on today, yes, we'll be using chemicals to develop it." Fina nodded at Kace. Hence the protective goggles.

"Well that's a style of print. Not necessarily a way to process pictures." Which came it both black and white as well as colour, for both processing types.

"Not really types of processing, but those are ways you can get yours photos processed, yes. Though polaroids would be a specific form of film processing, so good, yes."

"For film processing, yes traditionally a darkroom and a solution is used, but chemicals have evolved over the years since film processing and darkrooms aren't a necessity as they once were."

"Yes, Polaroids are the all-in-one cameras, as it develops the picture right after you take it. They're rather nifty devices," Fina said, holding up her model Polaroid for show and snapped a picture of the class as an example.

Was Adi even listening to what he was saying? "Black and white is a style of print, not a type of processing."

Everyone uses their phones; yes, she heard Caleb, but she just shrugged that off and interrupted his response as something else. "But yet, taking pictures with the phone is called digital photography. So whether you use camera or phone for digital photography, the result is the same."

"So we have our two types of processing, which is not to be confused with style of print or where you process," Fina went on to explain, as she wrote the two types on the board behind her. "Film Processing and Digital Processing. If I may be frank, digital photography is rather boring. It uses an electronic image sensor to transpose the image as electronic data, as opposed to chemical changes on film. Digital photography also allows for more manipulation post-processing, but like I said, the process is boring. You snap a picture with a phone or digital camera and then plug it into a printer or computer and print. Nothing fancy. Just push of a button or two and you're done."

"But film processing, now that's got some interest because of the use of chemicals, which is also why we'll be needing to wear goggles for today's lesson. You don't want to get these chemicals in your eyes." She paused, looking over the cameras on her desk again. "Before we get more into the process we'll be going through, let's talk a little more on cameras and how they work. What type of things do you think you as the photographer can control in regards to taking a picture?"

All of this went over the Ravenclaw's head. Should she know these things? HOW DID OTHER PEOPLE KNOW THESE THINGS? LIKE SERIOUSLY. BUt she was taking notes for one, so..that was always good. Eden felt really dumb.

Like...really dumb...

But then she asked a question Eden KNEW. YAYAY. She HAD to raise her hand--"I think they control what is actually IN the picture--" and yeah. Other things that everyone else was saying, so Eden piped down once more. Yep.

This was - in Fina's mind - a rather vague question. Like even even if you had no experience with photography, surely one should know at least one thing that can be controlled, yes? Or not, judging from Sophie's silence. Perhaps she'd gone into too much detail too fast, but she was still keeping things generic (so she thought).

"Yes, Photographers can zoom in ... or out ... on a subject." Fina noted, writing that on the board under a heading 'things that can be controlled by photographers'

"Ah yes, very useful if you have a very tall person next to a short person, for instance. Just take the photo as a vertical shot." Or risk cutting of heads or feet, but then people get all offended.

"Lighting yes. Can, as you said, sometimes be controlled, other times, not so much." With more modern technology, yes it could.

"Another way to control the angle, besides horizontal or vertical pictures is to control the angle that you're shooting from," yes, she would give that one credit. Good.

Fina nodded when Lux too mentioned the zoom, but said no more as it already listed on the board.

"Getting technical now," Fina smiled appreciatively at the fourth year for her use of technical terminology. "But yes, in some cameras, lighting is controlled through the aperture of the camera, but unfortunately not all cameras have such a feature, so other modifications might need to be made to control the lighting."

"Perspective , or angle of where the photographer is shooting from, yes, good." Already mentioned, but in a different way.

"Yes , but depending on the camera, you might not want to stand too far away or you won't be able to see anything." Unless of course that was the artistic goal of the shot, but that was another story.

Oh Zeke HAD shown up and for a moment, Fina wondered if he would contribute, since he claimed he knew all this stuff surely he would be able to provide something worthy to the discussion, yes?

Or ... no, not really. It was similar to what had been said.

"Yes, you can take pictures any which way. Upside down, if you wish, even."

"Sometimes, yes, the color can be controlled, but the advantage to digital photography is that, even though i said the processing was boring, you can more easily alter the photographs taken. So if you decide you want to change the color to black and white, you can do so." Photo editing. Which was a totally different topic and something they were not working on today.

"With digital photography, yes, editing can be made. Not so much with film pictures though." Unless you scanned in the photo to a computer but that was again, another topic.

"Yes, film is light sensitive. Which is also why if you expose the film to light too soon in the developing process, then your pictures won't come out. But with the inventions of many products, we fortunately don't need to work in a completely darkroom as once was necessary."

"Ah yes, the focus of the lens can be adjusted." She added that to the list. "Good. And I like how you mentioned the artistic relevance of some blur to photos." Another advantage to digital, the ability to easily blur some parts of the photo, but sharpen others.

A camera. Well that was ... a very simple answer and way to a photographer could control the photographs being taken. Technically speaking, "yes, the camera used does have some impact on the pictures."

Text Cut: Things Photographers can control with Picture Taking

* Zoom
* Focus
* Angle (Vertical/Horizontal picture)
* Angle (Perspective of the shooter)
* Lighting (Aperture)
* Photo editing (with digital)
* The camera used

"So as you can see there's quite a bit that can be controlled by the photographer. And the advantage to digital is that if you forget something, you can most likely adjust it later before processing the photographs due to the freedom of being able to easily manipulate digital copies." Assuming of course you had that sort of talent and skill.

"But film processing is our focus here. Which you can get the film from a disposable camera such as this one," she held up the Kodak on her desk. "Or a roll such as this," she held up a cylindrical black roll. "When you take a photograph with film, the subject you're filming gets transposed onto the photographic film. The negative image on the film is traditionally used to transfer or create a positive image onto a paper base, known as a print. It uses chemicals- a gelatin-silver process - to treat film and paper to produce that negative or positive image. It transforms the latent or negative image, into a visible image, also making it insensitive to light."

"Just for quick review of terminology ... monochromatic means what?"

ooc: we're going to do just a few terms (3-5)... so brief RP posts are acceptable for this point, and obviously so are repeat answers.

And Eden was lost. And also not paying attention. OOPS? She was staring out of a nearby window, watching absolutely NO bugs fly by--come on, man! Eden needed some entertainment. Her brain was shutting down from lack of understanding--so much SCIENCE.

Sigh.

Some 'claw, she was.

And then...she heard the term...monochromatic. Eden would never have thought in a MILLION years that this term had to do with...photography. it sounded more like...a plant term. Biology. That stuff. Man, Eden was being quiet in this class, too, now. Hmph. But for different reasons than in Transfiguration.

Okay, perhaps she had phrased this wrong, judging from the majority of confused expressions, but oh well. "No, not quite development, as that could refer to monochromatic as well. But well good thinking for Ian there on polychromatic, though not quite." It was a reasonable guess though.

"The term I was thinking of was chromogenic, which refers to the process of taking a traditional silver image and replacing it with a dye image."

"The final technical term that you should be aware of because it sheds light as to what we will be doing, is the word photography. What two Greek roots does this come from? And part two, what do these Greek words mean?"

WHO WAS THIS CLOWN. Eden didn't know WHAT people's problems were--but SERIOUSLY? She eyed the puffer a bit but wouldn't be MEAN. She was pretty sure that she had sat next to that kid in class once but she couldn't remember his name now.

Whatever his problem was, though, Eden did NOT like it hindering her learning experience--because NOW she had no clue what the heck was going on in class at ALL. Greek? THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT GREEK NOW?

Yet another subject that Eden wasn't familiar with. Greek. The only Greek she knew was PHOENIX TOROS and she most certainly didn't want to think about HIM right now. So she just frowned and scribbled a few things in her notebook...about the monochromatic stuff..about...ugh, what the GREEK words meant...her blue eyes only looking up once she heard someone yawn...yeah.

Science did that to people.

..... How come these questions were so rapid fire, huh? Zander was a muggleborn and HE could hardly even keep up. The Gryffindor could only imagine how everyone else was feeling at this point. Geeeez. So instead of raising his hand to offer an answer, he just continued to scribble down as much as he could remember from the other answers. Good thing he had a whole year before exams and all. Still had time to learn things... Or well, some of the things. Right. Yeah, totally scribbling the notes, Professor!

Ethan was relieved to know that he didn't have to live like a muggle when it comes to photography. The tedious steps it had to take just to get one piece of photograph to be developed was just way beyond the boy's understanding of muggle practice. Do they really have the time to do all of that? His mind wandered to Professor Fuller's last class about animating their pictures. See? With just a flick of a wand, they get moving pictures, which by the way was more interesting than the muggle kind.

The Slytherin kept quiet and took down notes instead. He's game to understand everything behind the concept of photography really, but he was more interested with doing the actual photo processing.

Scribble, scribble, pause. Scribble.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

As a Pureblooded wizard, Muggle Studies class was already pretty difficult. And the fact that the questions were asked in rapid fire and even used big words he became more and more confused. Which meant he was just gonna lean back in his chair and even yawned.

He was not the note taking type, because he was smart enough to remember EVERYTHING that was being said during classes LIAR.

Anyways, pictures were kinda like drawings weren't they? Mweh his previous answer had been right as well surprisingly so he decided to give it another shot. "One root means Drawing?" he had no clue what he was doing and he couldn't wait till the practical portion of the lesson.......there was going to be one right?

Lowering her quill and taking a pause from writing Hady listened a moment to the next question. She didn't know the whole answer but she thought she knew half of it, or well at least it sounded correct in her head.

"I think the Greek words were Photo and Graph. Photo meaning or having to do with light and Graph has to do with a drawing..."
Hady answered raising her hand. To her it sounded good but she wasn't exactly sure it was correct.

Ian listened as the other students provided their answers. It appeared to be another lesson in theory. Quite popular, it seemed.

Greek....Gabriel knew Greek.

......but he wasn't going to speak up or mention it in front of so many people.

Refocusing on his notes, Gabe wrote a few things down...elaborating on his classmates' answers. Greek word parts were similar to Latin ones....though, Latin happened to be leagues more difficult.

Hmmm.

He enjoyed theory as much as the next person...but Gabe was ready for the science now. Could they just do that instead?

He tapped his pen against the desk top anxiously......and the Hufflepuff guy was decidedly close....and looking at his notes. Apparently, Gabe had been right about the pen situation. With a sigh, he pushed the notes over a bit so the guy could have a better look...and not be so close.

Gabe did NOT do closeness.

Muggle Studies Lesson One: the SCIENCE! of Photography
(Chemicals)

Types of Muggle Photo Processing
Digital upload: digital processing
Darkroom and solution: film processing

Digital Processing
• It uses an electronic image sensor to transpose the image as electronic data.
• It also allows for more manipulation post-processing with imaging software.
• After taking a picture with a phone or digital camera, you simply plug it into a printer or computer and print, edit, or email.

Film Processing
• It requires the use of chemicals and/or other various solutions.
• These types of photos are taking with standard cameras.
• Polaroids would be an example of film processing, as polaroid pictures use a chemical agent to develop quickly without the need of other solvents or chemicals.

Monochromatic
containing or using only one color.

Photography
φωτός (phōtos); φῶς (phōs) "light" and γραφή (graphé) "representation by means of lines, drawing, drawing with light"
the process or art of producing images of objects on sensitized surfaces by the chemical action of light or of other forms of radiant energy, as x-rays, gamma rays, or cosmic rays.

Adi leaaaaned a little closer, squinted at the book before he started scribbling in his own book. Then Hadley- Nairne was moving on. Wait. Adi actually knew this. Or a bit of it, anyway. "Phot or photo or a variation of the word, I can't remember which...'' Adi paused sheepishly. Moving on. "It means light.''
"Photo is not the Greek root, but that half of the word does mean light," Fina agreed, writing light on the board.

"Yes, good, photos comes from the Greek word Phos!" She nodded at the Head Girl, who it seemed was paying attention after all, as she wrote that on the board next to 'photo and light'. "And I think understanding the basic terminology is important for the actually task." So even if they weren't asked this directly on an exam, fundamentally it might be useful for task completion.

"Graph is like drawing, yes.....and yes a photograph is precisely that. It is a drawing made from light. Excellent application and analogies there." Josephina nodded at his analysis.

So did she get a prize or something? She looked down at her feet. Ruby slippers would be nice.
"Ah yes, interesting comparison. Photosynthesis has the word photo in there. Photo is light." Good, they were in agreement on at least half of the word.

They would be practicing photography today. How the drawing with light fit in Jasmine wasn't quite sure. Since this was the last question, she guessed she'd fond out soon enough.
"Yes." Hadley nodded at the claw prefect, writing drawing on the board.

Then -ography meant some type of art? He raised his hand and said his thoughts out loud. "Professor I know photo means like light and dealing with paper and -ography means it is like a type of art." That is what he thought it meant anyways.
"Correct on the first part, but not quite on the second half of the word."

Hady answered raising her hand. To her it sounded good but she wasn't exactly sure it was correct.
"Correct with the meanings, but not quite on the Greek roots." Fina nodded and waited a few more minutes for those who were taking notes to finish their writing.

"So those of who mentioned light were correct. Photo comes from the Greek word phos, which means light. Whereas the ending, graphy, comes from the Greek word graphe which translates to representation by lines or drawing." Adding the missing pieces to the notes on the board, she then continued on. "So in whole, Photography means drawing with light. Which makes sense on the conceptual level since we mentioned light was a big part to processing pictures as well as something photographers can control when taking them."

"What we're going to do today is practice developing rolls of film. Which I should have enough rolls for everyone to have one, but if you mess up your processing, just share with your classmate." She held up a bin with at least 20 already used rolls of film waiting to be processed. "You will need to wear these highly fashionable safety goggles as a precaution. I have aprons as well but they're optional."

"So what i need first, is for everyone to come select one roll of ready-to-develop film, which you can tell if is ready to develop, or in other words been exposed, by the fact that there will NOT be this little tab sticking out." She demonstrated by holding up one of the unexposed film canisters and moving the tab of film back and forth. "Also, please take a pair of goggles and an apron, if you wish. Your goggles should sit correctly on your face, covering your eyes. I don't want to see any goggle headbands or goggles on the back of heads, or you will not earn credit for this class. While you're adjusting your goggles, I'll go ahead and write the procedure on the board and then we'll get started."

ooc: i'll post the procedure in a couple hours and you'll have ~48 hours real-time to complete the procedure

Angel was scared... very scared. She knew for a fact she was going to mess this up, okay so she liked cameras and she looked being in pictured but didn't you have to be highly qualified before you started to develop the films.

Angel put on the safety googles well at least there was one good thing she couldn't blow anything up or well her sister couldn't though this new AJ was totally a goody too-shoe and she couldn't wait to ask her sister why this was happening. She got hold of a role of film and sighed this was going to go badly. Now though she had to wait for Hadley to tell them how to do it.

Ian looked around as the professor responded to him. He had NO idea he'd been answering questions. Fortunately, he seemed to be doing ok. He walked up to the front of the class feeling a wee big ridiculous in this outfit and he thought about looking in his satchel to see if he'd brought some robes or something. Unlikely though.

He reached into the bin and took out a roll, checking to see if a tab was visible. No tab...good to go. He also grabbed a pair of goggles and an apron to cover himself with. He felt rather exposed with these short pants on. Having his things, he headed to his seat. He wished he had someone to talk to to ask if he had done anything stupid.

There were words thrown at them that Lux didn't understand so she stayed silent and took notes. Terminology wasn't her greatest strength, nor was muggle photography. But she DID know the basics of using a muggle camera. Nothing really about developing photographs, however.

Finally activity time was here, and Lux listened carefully as Professor Hadley told them about the rolls of film and protective equipment. Right. Seemed simple enough to her. Reaching into the bin, she took out a roll of film without a tab. Awesome, it was ready to go. She also grabbed a pair of goggles.

Putting on the goggles so that they covered her eyes correctly, she waited for the steps to be written on the board.

This Ravenclaw guy wasn't so bad. Adi wished he knew his name but that could wait until he had finished taking notes from the notes the boy had shoved closer to Adi. Or after class. Anyway, the Puffer wasn't leaning so close to Specsy guy any more but he had no idea how uncomfortable his leaning had made the guy earlier.

Annnd there! All note taking done! "Thanks, Mr Specs,'' Adi whispered. "You're a cool guy, you know.''

Back to Professor Hadley- Nairne. Noooo aprons for him, thank you very much. Adi collected one roll of the film from the bin and a pair of goggles. Back at his seat, he wondered how Mr Specs would make out with wearing goggles and specs. Or would he see properly if he had to take off his glasses? Hmm...

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

So then.....not something she was going to need for her NEWTs. Merlin, the Professor could have chosen an easier way of saying that instead of going about with excuses and whatnot about it being good to understand everything and blah blah blah. Lex merely nodded, accepting that this wouldn't be a portion of the text she needed to revise.

With the invitation put forth, she rose from her seat and went to collect the goggles and the film. So many restrictions on what she could and couldn't do with the damn things, so many restrictions period when it came to Hogwarts. Then they wondered why she was so happy to be leaving.

As she got back to her seat, she slapped the googles on, fitting them over her eyes in such a way the Professor wouldn't need to have any complaints.

There. Ready.

Dorothy smiled at the Good Witch in front. Developing film! Cooool! She followed the other kids up to the front to grab a pair of goggles and an apron to protect her favorite blue dress. She took a moment to peek into the box juuuuust to make sure there wasn't a hidden pair of slippers in there. You could never be too hopeful. This side of the rainbow was full of surprises
