Muggle Studies Lesson One (Electricity: Building Simple Circuits)
The classroom has been arranged into a style that might be familiar to those of you who have been taught by Professor Hadley before; there's several round tables, along with five or six chairs around the tables. Each table is void of any materials or props (for now).
Professor Hadley is seated at the front of the classroom, mesmerized by the pulling of a simple string on a lamp. Light on, light off, light on, ...
ooc:take a seat and keep chatter to a minimum. We'll begin shortly as soon as enough people arrived. Lesson has begun (semi). No entering the class, but please pretend like you've been here the whole time. Thanks <3
Lesson Progression
First Question: Introduction and what are different types of Electricity you know of?
Answers and Next Question: So what type of unit is used in electricity which determines how dim or bright a light bulb will be?

Minerva sat there.. Sat there listening to everything. They were really talking about batteries, batteries.. This was just odd to Minerva, she had lived as a muggle. Her grandparents were muggles and they were just batteries. No big deal, just stick them in and they make things work. So why did it really matter what kind they were.
Putting up her hand she still had a confused look on her face. "Professor does it really matter the amount in the battery? It's a battery. Each item just takes different batteries. It depends on the item really of how bright it is not the battery, right?" She really wasn't sure they were batteries who cared. She wasn't trying to be rude, but she honestly didn't know nor honestly cared that was the job of the people that made the batteries and the items they go to, right?

Though numbers still wasn't exactly Penelope's idea of fun, this was so much better than Arithmancy. Because this was actually understandable and wasn't based on a bunch of nonsense and the professor was actually not off her rocker. Could Hadley just teach both classes? Not...that it would matter too much at this point since Penelope wasn't sure she was ever gonna go to an Arithmancy lesson again. So whatever.
The 9 volts thing surely was brighter and stuff because the number was higher, so that was what probably affected brightness, but the fifth year didn't feel like repeating all that since most of the others had covered it. So she just continued to listen for now.

Seemed like everyone had their encyclopedia eating hats on today, yeah? What was the point of even mentioning watts or voltage or anything if everyone else was just going to spit out the answers.
And to be farr, he found it kind of funny that they all knew this. He had spent his summer slaving in a shop learning about all of this stuff and batteries for working on motorbikes and cars. Ascanius at least UNDERSTOOD what everyone was going on about.
But he was just gonna sit in the back and let everyone else answer. They all knew it anyhow.

Uhh.... no. West didn't know. He didn't. Because he'd not been taught anything useful like this in Muggle Studies ever before and his Muggleborn friends tended to tell him like... other things or whatever. He stayed quiet.

Laura looked at the Professor and raised her hand. "Professor it would all depend on the type of brand you used, if you used two Duracell AA batteries that are 1.5volt and the 9 volt one is a cheap brand then I would say that the Double AA 1.5 volt would be brighter but if it's the other way around then it would be the 9 volt battery that is brighter." Laura stopped to get her breath, all this stuff was weird and she was wishing the ex professor was back even though she liked her head of house, the best subject for her was Arithmancy not Muggle Study. "Anyway Professor. "Voltage is the answer your looking for."

Potential to cause injury. Did that mean Muggles could use this electicitery stuff as a weapon?
And Quidditch? Alice perked up some.
But then they went back to discussing boring bulb stuff- weren't bulbs part of Herbology?- and the sixth year zoned out again, once more looking as if she was going to drift off from boredom.

She wondered why she even bothered coming to this class. It really was a waste of her time. Still, here she was so she might as well just make the best of it. They were talking about electricity. She had the urge to tell the professor how dumb muggles and their electricity were, but she had a feeling that it wouldn’t go over to well with the ex arithmancy professor. Instead she tried to think of electricity. Hmmm…. OH! Her hand was in the air. ”There’s static.” That’s what made peoples hair stand on end right? Did that count?

"SO what's the type of unit that is used in current electricity which determines, for example, how bright or dim a light bulb will be?"
Ok so she was definitely beginning to lose Hannah. There were units? Maybe coming to class was not such a good idea after all. She searched her brain for anything that send bells ringing, but she was getting nowhere and fast. ”Um, could it be decimal or decibal.” What was she even getting at? Maybe she would be better off just taking notes.

"And then tell me again, what determines brightness?"
That should give it away, without really giving it all away, right?
Guesswork. Hannah could definitely get down with some guesswork. She thought about the question and figured common sense would be her best bet. She just hoped that she was on the right track with that. The sixth year raised her hand. ”Professor I think that the 9 volt battery would be brighter because even if you added 1.5 plus 1.5, 3 is still less than 9 so 9 would be better and brighter.” Well, it made sense in her mind anyways. Um, did she ever tell them what determined brightness? Hannah didn’t know so she would just take notes this time.
Well... Tora thought a bit about that. She wasn't good at math but even she knew that 1.5 times 2 was no where near 9. "So," she continued her train of thought out loud. "it means that because the voltage of the 9 volt battery, it would shine brighter, right? Or is it one of those things that is opposite and flippy." Even though her parents were basically Muggles, she didn't know much about electricity. Only really that it existed. She knew nothing about the specifics and the little extra bits that went along with the Muggle technology. Maybe if she learned about Muggle technology, she could create Muggle- Magical things, because when the Muggle and the Wizarding world collided, really awesome stuff could be made.

Kat had no idea what they meant by dimness or lightness of a light bulb. Isn't it supposed to be LIGHT since it is a light bulb? Muggle Studies was... confusing her. Even more confusing than when Hadley taught Arithmancy. See? This is why they should return her back to the Arithmancy post. It was written in the stars, Josephina Hadley and Arithmancy. It only made sense that they were meant to be.
AHEM. Anywaaaaaaaaay...
She was talking about numbers, which was related to Arithmancy. DID YOU SEE HER POINT NOW? Kat was officially distracted from the lesson about light bulbs. She didn't need those anyway, but she took down notes. NEWTs reasons.

Sarah raised her hand, "if there is a resistor present, teh brightness could differ, even in the form of a dimmer... also, it depends on what kind of circuit it is. Is the bulb connected in series or parallal? All these would make a difference to the final answer" She said.

... He... was thinking too much.
Shaking his head, Alec focused on what Hadley was saying instead. This... wasn't one of those tricky questions, it seemed. Because sometimes in muggle science classes, the teacher would ask something that seemed simple enough but they were just trying to trick you. And then you ended up feeling guilty and bad for saying the wrong answer. ... Alec didn't like that. Nope. Not at all.
He raised his hand in the air before saying, "Erm... the 9 volt battery. Isn't it made up of six 1.5 volt batteries?" ... Was it? ... The next question was simple enough. Definitely. "And voltage! The higher the voltage, the... the brighter the bulb?" Or was that Watts...? ... This... sounded a lot like those science classes back in primary school.

This was Muggle Studies, what in merlin's beard were NUMBERS doing here. Eyes for the former Arithmancy Profesor, still trying to spread the 'art' we see.
Wild and ridiculous numbers in that Arithmancy class and now more numbers in Muggle Studies. You didn't see this kind of nonesense happening in DADA, did no one else notice? With another sigh she raised her hand to answer, despite there being other responses. "The one with 9 would be brighter. It has more voltage and volts are what brightness are measured in." That was the only answer, like legit.
Lex tried to cheer herself up. MAYBE there WOULD be food afterall. Professor Hadley was a hufflepuff, there HAD to be food somewhere along the line...please?

"So you're all getting this now! Yes, the nine volt would indeed produce a brighter bulb. That's assuming that the bulb is from a battery, but even if it's not, there's SOME kind of voltage that travels through wires to be able to light up a room when you flick a switch." SO even just a simple lightswitch flick had a whole current behind it. It wasn't just simply 'magic'. "The higher the voltage, the more energy produced and the brighter the result. YES, the watts within the lightbulb does have SOME bearing on the brightness, but even if you have a 100 watt bulb, but only 3 volts powering it, it wouldn't be as bright a light as say, a 60 watt bulb, with 200 volts." Yes, she was exaggerating a bit, but exaggeration was necessary to see the point.
Anyway, she was straying and probably putting some of them to sleep with this boring terminology and numbers talk, but background information was necessary to be able to understand how it worked.
"Alright, so each table is going to get to build a miniature circuit, as an example of how electricity works. The circuit will be controlled by a switch, just like if it were a broader scale, like the electric circuit in your house. But obviously we couldn't bring that circuit to the classroom." Too large. And way too much voltage.
"Name ONE material you think we need to build a circuit. I've already mentioned a few." So even if you knew nothing, if you were paying attention, then you should know at least two or three of the materials. "Hint; there's five that we'll be working with."

So they were building a circuit? That was pretty cool. Ella always liked the hands-on stuff best. She smiled a little at Hadley just to show that she was paying attention and then considered what might be used. Five things. Hmm.
"Professor, are we going to use batteries for power?" Cause the power had to come from somewhere, right? And she'd mentioned batteries before so it didn't seem too far fetched.

Leave it to an ex Arithmancy professor to still be talking about numbers! She didn't like the idea of having to build a circuit. She didn't like the idea of relying on other either, but she figured this one time might just benefit here. Everybody knew that Hannah was out for herself and would only help others if it in fact helped herself.
She thought about what would be needed to build a circuit and something that the professor had already said came to mind right away. "We will need a light switch." she said with a raised hand. Hannah could sure point out the obvious.
Ah okay. SO he was KIND of right. That was good, sweet, awesome, etc.
OooooOOOH. Building a circuit. Tobias had a vague memory of doing this way back in primary school. The main thing he remembered were the little safety clips used the clamp on to stuff so the current could go through. Tobias mainly remembered those because he would clamp them onto the ends of his fingers and when he took them off there would be 'teeth' marks.
He raised his hand to give it a go, but couldn't quite remember exactly HOW they'd done it when he was younger.
"Uhhh... wires? Or something to conduct the electricity, and then something to insulate US from the conductor," he said with a cheerful grin. It was worth a shot. "Oh yeah, and with bigger electric things muggles always need to make sure they ground themselves with like... rubber or something. I think that's an insulator."

"Batteries are definitely one needed for a miniature circuit, yes, good!" Hadley nodded, writing that on the board.

"Yes. Wire, very good. More specifically, we'll be using an insulated copper wire," Hadley nodded at the two young hufflepuffs, as she added 'insulated copper wire' below where she wrote 'switch'.
"Two more items. One ... is your evidence for how you know that the circuit works? You need some sort of visible way to see if it works, yes?" That was a hint.
"There's actually another two items which aren't necessarily needed in the actual circuit, but just as aids to help you build the circuit." So there were six items. But she supposed that she could have them use magic instead of one of the supply items. Diffindo would work nicely enough.

Sarah raised her hand, "how about a resistor, to use as a dimmer?" she asked. She knew all this from science and all. She thought having one in a room was necessary when sharing a bedroom when it came to compromising. Like if one wanted the lights on and the other wanted the lights off they could dim the lights mid way so that both would be happy.

Minerva listened still a bit confused as to why they were talking about all of this until Professor Hadley said they would be making a circuit. Well this sounded kind of cool. Maybe it would be a little more interesting now. As she asked the questions Min put her hand up of course thinking of mental wires, but as she held her hand up someone had taken her answer so she put it back down.
Two items were still missing well Duh couldn't have a circuit without an end product, right? She put her hand back up, "Professor we need an actual light bulb to see if it's going to work. Without the end product we will never know if it actually did anything." Minerva put her hand down yes she was being captain obvious, but wasn't that one of the missing materials.
I guess they will be learning about electricity today. That is somewhat cool in Kace's opinion. But he wasn't really fascinated with it, i mean unless he wanted to be an electrician. But he heard the student's answers and they did make sense.
He was gonna answer but then Minnie took the words right out of his mouth. "Professor i agree with Minnie, you will need a light-bub to figure out if the circuit is working or not."

Scribble... scribble... scribble...
Batteries, light switch, wires, resistor and a light bulb. ALL used for a simple circuit. Yeah. This lesson DID sound a lot like science lessons. And science was very close to maths. Maths was the Muggle form of Arithmancy, essentially. And Hadley taught Arithmancy before. See, it ALL linked back to the same point again. Nodnod.
As for her question, he had no idea what else was used for a simple circuit. Sometimes power packs were used for the slightly larger/bigger circuits, right? The ones that were going to light more than one bulb and were probably parallel? Yeah. Maybe.
But now he had a small question regarding the whole light bulbs thing. "Professor?" he started, raising his hand in the air, "Can buzzers be used in some simple circuits?" Because he had a faint memory of being shown a circuit that had used a buzzer at some point. Or maybe it was just the idea that some things used electricity and circuits but they made a sound instead of -- or in some cases, as well as -- producing a light.
Adrienne continued to have no idea what she could contribute to the discussion, so she just sank further into her chair and crossed her arms more tightly. Her robe was pulling slightly at the shoulders, and it was uncomfortable. As the professor spoke, she stared blankly at her, and then eventually decided she'd better write this stuff down (solely for the purpose of tests, because she was not interested in the slightest in this subject.) So she slowwwly sat up and scribbled down a few rather illegible things about circuits and lightbulbs. There. Close enough; muggles were dumb and so was this class.
Tobias raised his hand again, because he wasn't sure if anyone else had said the thing he'd thought of. He was, once again, tempted to mention those crocodile clips, but decided that they were more likely to be used by little kids. SO he had his other idea instead.
"What about like... wire strippers. You can use them to cut through the plastic-y rubbery insulator-y bit around the copper wire and pull it off, but they don't necessarily cut through the wire. Just 'cause you need to get the right length of wire to connect and like... wrap around the stuff in the circuit so it all flows."
Aw yis. Concentrating in primary science because there was shiny stuff and potential danger was turning out to be a good move.

Good merlin what were they on about now? Wires and circuits and--...hang on...they were MAKING curcuits?? Essentially they were going to be playing with electricity like that time at the seminar on safety...looking back she could see the irony in the whole thing, considering she'd nearly lost her hand. No regrets though and it was only a pity she'd never gotten to keep at least one of them. Too many buzzer haters apparently.
Lex felt this was the moment to raise her hand and say she had absolutely no idea what went into circuit making but others were giving legit things so she'd kinda look bad.
"Would electrical tape be used?" She remembered her father getting some once while they were out shopping and asked what it was for. Based on his explanation she got the idea that maybe it would come in handy now? She didn't KNOW. They may have lived among them but they were certainly nothing like them. When her father wanted something fixed he only needed to get his wand.
"You'll also need willing volunteers to build and test." Not everyone would trust muggle stuff to not be shoddy. You just never knew sometimes.

West was pretty lost to be honest. How did everyone know so much when Cerulean hadn't even got close to giving them this sort of information in any past lessons? Was there a reference... or like a page in a textbook he was supposed to be looking at? Because he literally didn't know any of this so it was pretty much impossible to answer any of the questions.
