Hecate sat on the corner of her desk, listening to a tune in her her head no one else could hear. She swayed back and forth lightly, until her clock struck the hour her class would begin. Her face turned serious again, and she went behind her desk, waving her want to unlock the door.
Now that the door to the classroom was unlocked... kids just needed to begin filing in.
ooc: This class will stay open until October18th. Also thanks to Nixy! and AuroraQuinn for taking the picture of the Potions Classroom for me, and to Anna Banana for making it into a pretty graphic!
Adrienne blinked. Oookay. Apparently they weren't making Polyjuice Potion after all. And Lafay was leaving because of something she'd read in a note. That was incredibly suspicious, and probably had something to do either with the suspicious Arithmancy door or the probably-spies she'd run into in Hogsmeade. Whatever it was, something was up. But, for now, it meant she didn't have to make Polyjuice Potion! Adrienne eagerly leafed through her book, looking for Erumpent Potion, but she ended up in the H's before she saw it. With a slight disappointed frown, she glanced through the pages and decided do go with Hair Removal paste, since it looked pretty simple and would probably be really useful in her endeavours to annoy people, namely her cousins.
SPOILER!!: Recipe
Hair Removal Paste Use/Effect:
Removes hair
Ingredients:
beeswax (2 tablespoons)
juice from 5 flobberworms, freshly squeezed
shrivelfig (1, peeled & crushed)
calendula oil (10 drops)
Instructions:
melt wax in cauldron
add flobberworm juice and stir over high heat for 5 minutes, alternate stirring clockwise and counterclockwise every minute
add shrivelfig and stew over a low flame for 30 minutes
remove from heat and allow to cool completely before applying
add calendula oil after cooled and before application
Notes:
Can add essential oils for fragrance. Apply to area requiring hair removal, allow to stand for 5 minutes, and remove with a warm, moist, cloth. Discard after 24 hours
So.....He did not have to do the polyjuice potion. Sounded alright to The Prefect since he did not really have any want to. And a potion of his choice did sound like an awesome idea.
Nigel remembered Wade talk about a hair potion and want to do that. But could not find it in a book. So.....Essence of Insanity it was.

... Well, someone could've thought of a better thing to shape that note into. A butterfly, really? Not that Kat didn't like them, it just made her think that, of all the creatures that roam and live on this planet, why a butterfly? A Quintaped was better, because yeah... why NOT a quintaped? It was dangerous, but just super cool. Now she was taking charge of everything with Wade. Not like it was bad but it was cool to actually do something like this. Watch over a class and all.
So Kat flipped the pages of her book in search for a potion to brew. Sometimes that was random, because she didn't have anything in mind. She'd brew a Magical fireworks potion soon once it actually was useful. So she chose Wit-Sharpening for no reason at all. Some challenge though, but Kat was up for it. Always.
Text Cut: Page from book
Wit-Sharpening potion
Use/Effect:
Sharpens the intelligence and comprehension of the drinker.
Ingredients:
5 grams of ground scarab beetle
2.5 grams of cut up ginger root
500ml of Armadillo bile
8 grams of Fluxweed
Instructions:
Crush Fluxweed. Pour Armadillo Bile into cauldron.
Bring to a boil.
When potion has reached a roaring boil, add Fluxweed.
Stir potion 5 times clockwise. Let potion boil for 10 minutes stirring occasionally as needed. Do Not Allow The Potion to Boil Over.
Peel ginger root and chop fine. When time is up, add ginger to potion.
Reduce heat. The potion needs to come to a simmer for 30 minutes.
Stir potion counter-clockwise 3 times. The potion must be stirred counter-clockwise 3 times an additional 3 times while it simmers. Place the lid on the cauldron.
Grind Scarab Beetles to a find powder.
Sprinkle the powder over the potion. Replace lid.
Let potion brew for 45 minutes.
When time has elapsed, the potion will have reduced by half and now be a deep purple. If it is not, then you have done something wrong.
Remove cauldron from heat and let cool. The potion should now have a slightly thick consistency. Ladle potion into individual vials. Seal by using a sealing charm. Potion should remain potent for three month if sealed properly.

Ooooookay. That seemed highly suspect...... But at least they weren't having to do the Polyjuice Potion. Because that had been an utterly insane idea. Sky flipped through her textbook, occasionally folding down the corners of pages that caught her interest.
Finally, she decided on a potion and prepared her cauldron. "Scourgify." She could perform the spell nonverbally now, but in this instance she decided to just say it aloud. Just in case Professor Lafay was somehow listening in. Then she gathered her ingredients quickly and took them back to her seat.

Magical Fireworks
Use/Effect:
Magical fireworks do not require flames to be ignited, and are really little explosions of magic. Once created, they are much safer to use than their muggle equivalents
Ingredients:
Water
Big handful of dried flakes of Salamander skin
One jalapeno pepper
a dash of sheep bile
three grains of salt
A tab or wick
Tissue paper (whatever colors you please)
Instructions:
Fill Cauldron with water
Bring it to a boil
Add dried flakes of Salamander skin
Dice and add one jalapeno pepper to your potion
Stir 13 times anti clockwise
Add a dash of sheep bile. This will make your potion turn gray and become the consistency of liquid concrete, so it will be harder to stir.
add three grains of salt
stir 4 times clockwise until malleable
Mold into a form (any you'd like)
Put the tab or wick into the firework
Wrap it in the coloured paper

Minerva sat listening to the ingredients the other students talked about. Seeing a butterfly shocked the seventh year for a second, but she grew concerned when she noticed Lafay's face change. Something had to have happened for the woman to show a change in emotion.
When the professor turned and said emergency Min wanted to ask more, but figured it was better if she kept her mouth shut. Looking down at her parchment her eyes widen when the woman said class would still go on without her and they could pick their potion. Glancing at Kitty she couldn't help but smile a little. His time to shine as a leader, which was awesome, not that she expected anyone to need leading in one of Lafay's class. The woman probably had the room charmed to punish any child out of line when she wasn't looking.
Flipping through the recipe book, Min came across a shrinking potions. Thoughts going to History of Magic and that maze task she decided maybe this would be a fun one to try. She had done a few in the book over the past seven terms, but this one she hadn't yet. So jotting down the recipe on her parchment she went to the cupboard for her ingredients.

daisy roots (chopped)- 8 grams
shrivelfig (skinned)- one
caterpillar (sliced)- one
nettles (dried and crushed)- 8 grams
leech juice- a dash
ginger root (chopped)- 4 grams
Instructions:
Prepare and measure all ingredients ahead of time. Daisy roots and giner roots should be evenly chopped. Make sure all of the peel is removed from the shrivelfig. Leech juice will be provided by the professor (please walk carefully to the desk at the front of collect it before you begin brewing the potion).
Add daisy roots, shrivelfig, caterpillar slices, and nettle to 500 mL boiling water. Stir (direction is unimportant) for 2 minutes.
Add a dash of leech juice. Allow the solution to stew, stirring occassionally, for half an hour.
Add the ginger root and stir (direction is unimportant) for 2 minutes. Remove cauldron from the fire and allow potion to cool.
Write your name and house on two vials. Very carefully distribute your potion into the two vials (do not allow the potion to touch anything that is not the vial or the ladle- do not get on your hands!) Bring one to the front for grading and keep one vial at your desk for testing.

Okay, FINALLY it was time to do something! She had almost fallen asleep! She had really been bored during the first part from the lesson, but... what was happening? Why did the professor left the classroom? Had something happened and was there a emergency? Hmm, she was curious and wanted to find out what had happened when she was done with this lesson, but until than it was better to just concentrate on the lesson and to search for a potion she wanted to make and opened her textbook to search for a potion.
Hmm, there were a lot potions she liked, but also a lot were too difficult for her to do... And, she wanted to be the best in everything she did, but if she was honest she needed to confess that his lesson wasn't the easiest lesson from Hogwarts, she wasn't good at this at all! So she didn't wanted to do a really complicated lesson and found something she liked.

When she had decided what she wanted to do she grabbed everything she needed and prepared her cauldron, she cleaned it and made everything ready so that she could start with her potion.
Taylor blinked at the professor. Is she really going to do that? Tay sighed and nodded, getting her book and opening it, flipping through her book with a grimace. Why cant she just dismiss the class and give us like an essay about a potion of our choice? She frowned a little and grumbled, trying to find a good potion to do... one not too hard and not too easy... draught of peace... it stops anxiety... that would be really good right now... Taylor looked at the page in the book to make sure that she could do it.

To brew the Draught of Peace, follow these steps:
1.Add powdered moonstone until the potion turns green.
2.Stir until the potion turns blue.
3.Add powdered moonstone until the potion turns purple.
4.Allow to simmer until the potion turns pink.
5.Add syrup of hellebore until the potion turns turquoise.
6.Allow to simmer until the potion turns purple.
7.Shake powdered porcupine quills vigorously until they are ready and then add until the potion turns red.

10.Allow to simmer till the potion turns purple.
11.Add powdered unicorn horn until the potion turns pink.

14.Add more powdered moonstone until the potion turns grey.
15.Allow the potion to simmer until it turns orange.
16.Add more powdered porcupine quills until the potion turns white.
Taylor reread each part of the instruction then glanced at her cauldron then looked back at the page. Advance... eh... I can do this... cant I? Gosh, is the thought of making a potion to relieve anxiety making me anxious? How ironic...
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite
How completely unfair was THAT? Just when they were about to make the Polyjuice Potion, something had to come up and completely ruin that. Boo. What was so important that they couldn't continue on with this--pick a potion?
...
......
They were being given permission to make ANY potion in their book? Like legit?? There were a few that she knew for sure she wanted but then...after skimming through the pages and potions she saw one no one had ever bothered to point out to her before. When...when did this become a potion? Why didn't she know this?? Alexa read through the instructions. Simple enough. Scintillation Solution it was.
She hopped off her stool but didn't have to go very far for the ingredients considering she was sitting RIGHT NEXT TO the supply cupboard thanks to a certain 'Claw.
Her hands brushed against the ingredients inside, occasionally grabbing at something she needed and plopping it on the desk. This. Would. Be. EPIC.

Okaay. Lafay had gone. That was odd. and she was trusting them to brew potions on their own in the lab? Well that was interesting. Hopefully nobody would blow up the lab on anything. Clement began by looking through the book , picking his potion. He didn't want to do something too hard, because he would look like a bit of an idiot. Ahh. There. That one would do. He put the book back onto the bench, and began to write the ingredients that he needed onto a piece of parchment. He'd take this over to the cupboard, so that he didn't have to lug his whole book over there. Okay. There wasn't too many ingredients so that was good. Nodding to himself, he headed over to fetch the ingredients.

Lafay was leaving?
Ella hoped nothing bad had happened. The blonde also wasn't completely comfortable because some of the first years should probably not be left alone brewing whatever they wanted from their text book. She'd seen what could happen when a potion went wrong and yeah, it was unsettling. At least Wade and Kat were around to take charge if needed. She'd help too, of course. She'd just need to keep an eye out for anyone having trouble is all. She also needed to figure out what potion she was going to make. Hm.
After scanning the textbook a bit, the blonde settled on the basic sleeping draft. She was no stranger to nightmares and it couldn't hurt to get some experience making this particular potion.

Tora pick up her potions book and flipped open to a random page. She had really wanted to make an Invisibility potion, but couldn't as there wasn't a recipe for one in her textbook, hence the reason why she had wanted the class to make it. So she could get the recipe. Sigh. Oh well. She flipped blindly through a couple pages until she landed on the Scintillation Solution.

It sounded like it might make interesting results, but then again it also looked incredibly simple. So she flipped a couple pages back to a Hair-changing potion. That might be fun!

Hair-changing Potion: mild formulation
Use/Effect:
The mild formulation of the Hair-Changing Potion is used to alter the coloration of a person’s hair.
Instructions:
place moonstone in cauldron and add water
boil water for 5 minutes
add belladonna and nettles
boil for 5 minutes
reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes
stir, 20 full strokes clockwise followed by 20 full strokes counter-clockwise
place the clear potion in a goblet
dip the very tip of wand in potion and incant, "Coloro!" while concentrating on the color you want the hair
rinse hair in 200 mL of potion
wait 5 minutes for color change
Notes:
Belladonna (also known as deadly nightshade) is highly poisonous and this potion should not be ingested.
Remaining potion should be used within 24 hours.
Hair color will remain for 24-48 hours.
Moonstone may be reused.
She wanted to do both though, maybe she would have time to brew the two of them if she got on it? Both potions only took about 20 minutes to make, so she should have enough time...
But which to start with? She looked both over and eventually decided to get working on the one that looked more fun- the Hair-Changing Potion.

Wade merely watched as the rest of the class continued listing the ingredients before they were moving on. ..Hmm? Wade's brows furrowed as he then saw a butterfly shaped note fly towards Professor Lafay. Curiously, of course, he wanted to know what it was, but knew it was meant for her eyes only. Indeed, it seemed to change her tone of voice before she left.

Taking his potion book out, he opened it at a random page before flipping a few until he saw one. Hmm.. not a hair potion, but it'll do. Nothing like clean stuff, yes? Was it common that teachers just left lessons? .. Blinking, Benzi watched the scary looking potions teacher leave the classroom, scratching his head. So they were supposed to brew a random potion? He was going to brew his first potion by himself?!
This sounded like a recipe for disaster.
Flicking through his book, he allocated a potion that didn't seem particularly difficult. Actually, it seemed almost TOO simple. Simple enough so that Benzi actually felt like he might be cheating should he only do this particular potion. Skimming through the instructions, he figured it would take him about ten minutes to make. 15 if he was PUSHING it.

Use/Effect:

Ingredients
Water
8 drops of Essence of Wormwood
One cup of Jobberknoll blood
4 Billywig Wings
3 Belladonna leaves
2 tablespoons of poppy seeds
7 Sprigs of Valerian
5 leeches
Procedure
clean cauldron
fill it with water
light burner
add 8 drops of Essence of Wormwood one drop at a time
stirring your potion in a counter-clock motion.
add your Jobberknoll blood (low and slow stream)
crush 4 Billywig Wings and the 3 Belladonna leaves in your hands and let the pieces fall into the cauldron
clean the mortar and use it to crush the poppy seeds to dust
break the Valerian sprigs using your hands and add to the poppy seed dust
add the contents of the mortar to cauldron
add leeches to cauldron (wear gloves) → potion will turn a deep dark red
move wand in straight jabbing motion and say 'Verax' (potion will turn clear)
Now THIS looked more like it. Also slightly more useful, though he couldn't imagine it was allowed for use on students. Shame.
Perhaps he should make both the potions? The second one required more work, but he should be able to finish it within the time of the lesson. After all, they'd barely begun before the Lafay had left, so there was enough time until the next lesson. Yep, he'd do both.
About to grab his cauldron and go fill it up with water, Benzi suddenly noticed no one was really doing much. Just sort of staring at their books and cleaning their cauldrons. Actually, that was probably a good idea. Benzi made a mental note to scrub his clean before adding water. Also, they were all inexplicably silent. Why was no one talking?! The professor wasn't even here! ... Nerds.
"Uh.. Are we allowed to talk now?" the eleven year old asked nobody in particular, eyes flitting from student to student in search of the two Heads currently in charge.

Now that Ella knew what potion she'd be brewing, she set to work gathering ingredients. Surely everything she'd need would be in the cupboard, yeah? Yeah. The blonde slid out of her seat and went to have a look.
Lavender, chamomile, purslane, and ginger. Water would be coming from her wand so with the rest now arranged neatly in front of her, she was ready to work.
First thing she did was clean the cauldron. "Scourgify." Then she pointed her wand inside and began to fill it with water. "Aguamenti." When it had enough water, she ended the spell and glanced down at her notes. She'd copied the instructions over so that she could cross steps off as she went. Easier to stay organized that way.
"Incendio." Now she'd need to wait for the water to come to a slow boil. She could surely start crushing the other ingredients while she waited.
SPOILER!!: Notes"

Cat had barely any time to lament over the fact that they would not be making magical fireworks and were instead doing polyjuice, when Professor Lafay suddenly announced that she was leaving. Leaving? Whaaat. She watched as the woman swept from the room, all curious like, before dragging her glance back at her book. Time to select something to make.
Hmmmmmm... choices. Cat took peeks at Mo who had scooted closer to her, something that she greatly enjoyed. What was he going to pick, hmm? After a moment of thought, she decided to forgo the magical fireworks and go for the Scintillation Solution instead. She was all for colors and such, yes.

What?
WHAT?!
Lafay was leaving? BLINK. His mouth hung open a little as he watched the Potions mistress leave. ... Okay. It was probably a good thing Curly Wade and Kat were going to be here to make sure nothing went wrong. And he'd help! ... If he could. He doubted he'd be of much help, though.
Shrugging, the boy started flipping through the potions book, trying to find the right potion to make. She said that they could make anything, right? Yeah? He stopped at the page that showed how to make the Wiggenweld Potion and... BLINKED. This potion looked REALLY complicated! Or just long... but the longer the procedure, the more likely things were going to go wrong, right? And the last thing he wanted to do was get on the wrong side of Lafay so...
... he was going to pick something else.
Alec continued flicking through the book, back and forth, until his eyes landed on the page that had the Antillergen Potion on it. ... Could he? They did make this back in his first year so... Yeah! Plus, it didn't look too complicated. Unlike the Calming Draught with its two stages! Man oh man, it was a good thing he hadn't decided to make that all over again.

So the Professor was leaving the classroom? That was odd. But he took it anyway. He looked in his textbook to see what he could find. He flipped through his pages and saw one that he thought he could really use even for testing. He copied down the ingredients.....

Once he was done, he went to the cabinet to grab the materials he needed.
Now that Taylor knew what potion she was doing, she went about preparing her cauldron. Tay used scourify and cleaned it. She made sure that the cauldron was as clean as possible so that the potion will come out as it should. Taylor glanced at the page and looked at the ingredients that she needed, writing them down.
Huh... only four ingredients and a lot of stirring... how hard can this be? I just need to make sure that I don't cause an overdose of the ingredients since it would put people in deep sleep if I do... Taylor read and reread everything on the page then check and doubled checked to make sure she wrote every ingredient down. Taylor made sure to bring the ingredient list that she had made as she went to get them. She glanced down at the list and got the moonstone and the syrup of hellebore. Tay looked around for the porcupine quills and then got the unicorn horn. Taylor made sure she had enough of each before skipping back to the table. She laid down the four ingredients and then laid her wand down next to them and got out something to stir with and something to crush the ingredients with then cleaned them using scourify. Tay filled the cauldron with water using aquamenti and double checked that she had enough of everything and that she even has everything all ready. Taylor reread the page of instructions.
Maika looked up, surprised. She leaned over to the nearest student, whispering, "What was that all about?" She looked back to the doorway, and still opened her book, but she found herself horribly distracted all of a sudden.

Weeeell... that was just brilliant. Theo was getting excited about brewing the Polyjuice Potion but there was no way he would achieve that on his own. He flicked lazily through his potion book and tried to find one that had a small amount of ingredients, but also was at least cool to make.
...
Hmm... Wit-Sharpening Potion.
Theo lingered on this page and checked the list of ingredients and instructions over. It didn't seem too difficult, and it would be kind of useful to be smarter than he already was, of course.
Okay, the first ingredient was... water.
Excellent. Theo cleaned his cauldron as usual, and used the water spell with much confidence. It was his best spell, after all. He looked over at the page again and tapped his finger on the next ingredient.
SPOILER!!: page

Maika looked up, surprised. She leaned over to the nearest student, whispering, "What was that all about?" She looked back to the doorway, and still opened her book, but she found herself horribly distracted all of a sudden.
"I, for one, have no idea," Adrienne said in response to the young girl who was talking to her for some reason (why was she being talked to again?) "but I'm pretty sure it has to do with foreign spies and a locked door and a weird bearded professor." At least, she was almost pretty sure. Maybe. Okay, so by now she'd just about figured out that the 'foreign spies' were actually here for the EBSQBSLKFJDKL whatever competition, and she hadn't seen anything of the bearded Professor French since their first Arithmancy lesson, but hey. Spies were still extremely likely.
She pulled out her wand and cast a quick "Scourgify!" on her cauldron, then cast a glance at the ingredients list in her book. Beeswax, flobberworm juice, shrivelfig, calendula oil. That should be pretty easy to get ahold of, no?

...Well that was odd. Lafay was leaving so now they were just supposed to brew whatever they wanted anyway? Weird, but okay. Penelope was fine with not having to brew the Polyjuice Potion. But now she had to decide what to make since she didn't have a favorite already.
Flipping through the textbook, she did notice the Magic Fireworks that had been mentioned before, but it seemed like it had quite a few steps and stuff, so she decided to skip it. Then the Basic Sleeping Draft caught her eye. She'd never really liked the idea of depending on potions to sleep peacefully though, so she skipped over it too. And that was when she noticed the Wit-Sharpening Potion. Useful if taken before an exam? That WOULD be useful this year considering OWLs. She wasn't sure if they were gonna be able to use this since they had to leave it on their tables, but it wouldn't hurt to practice it so she could try it later on.
Yep. It was settled.

She was about to go get her ingredients but paused when she heard a younger girl whispering. Hm? Penelope shrugged a little. "Dunno. Was weird though," she replied in a half-whisper. She glanced briefly at the other girl who had responded as well but didn't pay much attention to the rest of what she said since she decided to go get her ingredients and stuff so she could start her potion.
Once she'd gathered the proper amount of each ingredient and a container to measure out the water, she set them on her table and then drew out her wand to cast Aguamenti before suddenly remembering there was something else to be done. Something with the 5 C's that she could only remember one of off the top of her head - cleanliness. "Scourgify," she said and then eyed her cauldron to make sure it really was clean. Hmm...yep. Looked clean to her. So with a quick "Aguamenti," she measured out 500mL of it before quickly casting "Finite" to stop the water and then poured it in.
And it said...to bring it to a delicate simmer? Alright. "Incendio," she said carefully, not wanting to light a flame that was too powerful or hot. Just needed a simmer. And...it looked to be doing that. So far so good.

Notes:
-This potion is sensitive to temperature so be sure to pay particular attention to the fire while brewing.
-In order to make the potion taste more pleasant, put a peppermint leaf upon the tongue and then, sip the potion. However, do not put the peppermint in the potion itself as steeping peppermint in the potion could alter the properties of the potion.
-Depending upon the brewing, one should feel the effects of the potion within 10 minutes, though it can take up to one hour.
