Default 1 - Independent Brewing

Hecate sat on the corner of her desk, listening to a tune in her her head no one else could hear. She swayed back and forth lightly, until her clock struck the hour her class would begin. Her face turned serious again, and she went behind her desk, waving her want to unlock the door.

Now that the door to the classroom was unlocked... kids just needed to begin filing in.

ooc: This class will stay open until October18th. Also thanks to Nixy! and AuroraQuinn for taking the picture of the Potions Classroom for me, and to Anna Banana for making it into a pretty graphic!

And now it was time to add the wicks and wrap her magical firecrackers. Yay!! She added the wicks and looked over at Sky, the other girl that had made muggle fireworks... She tied hers together... That was a cool idea... She wanted to do that now but that would be like copying.. She shook her head nope and started to wrap each of the fireworks only using blue, purple, and green paper. Because the other colors were not for Nerida's fireworks. She then tied a ribbon that had been on her wrist so that none would get lost and then used a sticking charm. Then she smacked on a green tag.

MAGICAL FIREWORKS
SPOILER!!: Recipe from Textbook

Magical Fireworks

Use/Effect:
Magical fireworks do not require flames to be ignited, and are really little explosions of magic. Once created, they are much safer to use than their muggle equivalents

Ingredients:
Water
Big handful of dried flakes of Salamander skin
One jalapeno pepper
a dash of sheep bile
three grains of salt
A tab or wick
Tissue paper (whatever colors you please)

Instructions:
Fill Cauldron with water
Bring it to a boil
Add dried flakes of Salamander skin
Dice and add one jalapeno pepper to your potion
Stir 13 times anti clockwise
Add a dash of sheep bile. This will make your potion turn gray and become the consistency of liquid concrete, so it will be harder to stir.
add three grains of salt
stir 4 times clockwise until malleable
Mold into a form (any you'd like)
Put the tab or wick into the firework
Wrap it in the coloured paper

She was on her last step... YAY! She glanced at the child a few times just to see if she would dare act up in front of her mother, but all seemed well on that front. She had to admit thought that she would like to see professor Lafay handle that one, but she was sure that she would get her wish before the year was over.

Glancing once more at her textbook to make sure that she was on the right page, it would really suck to mess up this late in the game, she noted the next step of the potion brewing process. It stated that all she would have to do from a more powerful brew would be to add ginger. Well, she wasn't wasting her time on a wear potion so she figures that step would be mandatory for her.

She grabbed just a pinch of the ginger and stirred it five times counter clockwise. This potion sure did like to be stirred counter clockwise for some reason. Oh well, she didn't really care about anything other then the fact that she was finally done. Could she leave now? Oh she almost forgot that she needed to label it. How dumb would it be to not get credit after doing all of that work?

Basic Sleeping Draft

Use/Effect:
The basic sleeping draft is to be used before bedtime in order to aid in sleeping. However, it should not be used longer than a week or two or one may start falling asleep at odd times of the day.

Ingredients:
water (500mL)
lavender (a pinch; crushed)
chamomile (a handful; crushed)
for nightmares: purslane (a pinch)
or more powerful brew: ginger (a pinch)

Instructions:
Bring water to a slow boil.
Add lavender and stir 21 times, counter-clockwise.
Add chamomile and let simmer for 20 minutes (potion should be pale, clear, purple with a tint of green, though the green may not always be observable)
For nightmares: add a pinch of purslane and stir 5 times, counter-clockwise
For a more powerful brew: add a pinch of ginger and stir 5 times, counter-clockwise

Notes:
Potion can be stored for up to a month, though it is advisable to brew a fresh batch weekly.

Lex gave a heavy sigh. It was like all her hopes and dreams bolted from the room the moment the Professor came back. She didn't ONLY want ONE. That wouldn't do. It simply wouldn't!!! Also, wasn't that Professor Lafay's daughter?? She was getting big like Jessa. Come to think of it...they were about the same age or something. She wouldn't really know. She didn't try knowing anything about her so-called baby sister or whatever.

From the looks of it, the kid was a brat. See why Lex didn't like babies and little people creature things?

The Gryffindor slumped into her seat as she was approached by the Professor. "I brewed the Scintillation Solution. It causes the drinker to glow in their favourite colour and become bright and animated, basically, I'm gonna look epic after I've drank this." She gave a solemn nod. Of course she also had a question. "Will we be allowed to keep more than a vial? Pleeease? Like....half the cauldron...?"
"Absolutely not." Hecate said calmly, "You may take one vial for homework, and that's it." She told the girl. "You don't need a half a cauldron."

Stiffing as she felt Lafay coming close to her workstations she wanted Wade to speak first, but the thought of his pickle cleaning thing made her cringe so she took a deep breath, "Well Professor I made the shrinking solution Medicamentum Contraho." She lifted her finished vial for Professor Lafay to see. Trying to make as little eye contact as possible terrified if she did the woman would scream at her, turn her into stone, or whatever else she could think of.
"Very good Prefect Wheatborn... I see your potion making skills are improving." She said though she didn't look at the girl.

But one thing was for sure... that was she'd get this done. And that the potion would work. Yeah? Of course. None of her potions failed anyway.

After ten minutes of waiting and just pretty much WATCHING everyone in the classroom, Kat peered into her cauldron and then added the 2.5 grams of cut up ginger root into the potion. She then reduced the heat a bit, because the book said so, and then.... Merlin, waiting again. For thirty minutes? How was she supposed to handle this? She still didn't know. Knowing she had nothing else to do, Kat waited. And boredom had started... now.

...

Thirty minutes seemed like two hours for Kat. When the hand on her watch said that thirty minutes was FINALLY over, she sighed in relief. "About time," she said to herself. Kat took the laddle and stirred the potion counter-clockwise three times. And then, while it was still simmering, she stirred it counter-clockwise again. Three twice too. Well, this potion mainly consisted of stirring and lots of time. Then she placed the lid on the cauldron. Time to grind the scarab beetles.

She took the mortar and pestle and started to grind it. GRIND... grind... grind. It didn't take long though. Once it looked like it was fine powder, Kat measured 5 grams of the powder and sprinkled it over the potion before replacing the lid on top of the cauldron. And then, of course, she had to wait... for another 45 minutes. Why did she choose this again? How many times had she asked this question to herself? Fifty times? She couldn't keep count.

...

Another sigh of relief after 45 minutes. Kat knew that the potion would almost be done. ALMOST. She just needed to remove it from heat and let it cool down for a bit. First though, she looked in the potion. Dark purple? Hmm. She glanced on her book again. Great, she'd done it right! And it reduced by half, which was also another sign that she'd done it well. Kat took her cauldron off the heat and let it cool. After what seemed like 3794390739053 minutes, she checked the potion again. Alright, that was cool enough. She ladled the potion into a vial, noting that it was slighty thick. Of course, she'd done it right... AGAIN.

All done.

Oh, Lafay was back. WITH A BABY. Hello, baby. But anyway, Lafay was moving around tables and like... oh, okay. It was a good thing Kat had finished on time then. And then Lafay was reached her table. "I brewed a Wit-Sharpening Potion." The name says it all, right? "And I have no questions, Professor." But you have an adorable daughter, just saying.

Mhm, yeah. Was that okay now? She'd done her potion and nothing seemed to have gone wrong.
"I see that, Miss Hudson." She said to the head girl... "A nearly perfect finished product."

Potions classroom was full of them.

As the teacher approached her, she put her book aside, took the phial with the sample and showed it to the teacher.

"It is a Antidote for common poisons, Professor Lafay. It's done, but I have some question. I didn't find in the book any mention to the colour it would to be. It's a beautiful and glowing blue sample as you can see, but I don't know if it's right and would work... and I don't intend to test on myself" the girl rushed to say. "Would have a way to check it without having to poison anyone?" She sighed. "I'm glad to see Ariadne here. She's not sick, is she? If my potion is okay, may I play with her outside the Potions classroom, at the corridor?" She said, grinning and waving at the girl in the bubble.
"She's here because she has recently been exhibiting her magic at an early. And she was a bad girl." She added looking back sternly at the child who was trying to poke through the magic bubble. "And no. Although your potion looks good, you are in class Miss Glasswall, you will continue with your education."

Cool.. and they get to share their potion. When his turn came, he held his up for her. "My potion's Magicleanse.. The scent it leaves is pickles with a hint of lemon." Well, dropping a whole pickle with part of a dried lemon gave it that.. Now did he have any questions? "No, no questions here, Professor." Least not that he could think of right away.

But now he was reduced to watching the hourglass count down the ten minutes, chin rested on arms which were folded on the tabletop. Every now and then he'd check the potion and give it another stir if it looked like it needed it. Eventually, Tobias kind of glazed over as he watched the hourglass, and started to come to just in time, because the last of the sand had dropped. Tobias grinned and sat up straight again, immediately going for the chopped up ginger root.

Once he'd dumped that into the potion, Tobias turned down the heat and...

... oh...

30 whole minutes, too, while the potion simmered. With a tiny groan of frustration, Tobias left the potion to it and started readying the scarab beetles so he could grind them up for a later step in the potion making process. As he was doing that, Lafay passed by his desk.

"I'm making a Wit-Sharpening potion," he said simply, with a big bright smile directed at the potions mistress. HAPPY VIBES, PROFESSOR. FEEL THE HAPPY.

He had caught glimpses of a few of the other students using their wands to perform this task and wanted to try it too. Cutty laid out his instruments, a stirring stick, a scale, a knife, mortar and pestle and his cauldron, all of which were previously cleaned if not new. Waving his wand, he said the incantation, "Scourgify!" for each item and checking his results after each was self-satisfied that he'd done something there. Though, whether he had or not would've been hard to tell.

What was that spell they were using for lighting their fires? He took his wand and pointed it at his burner. "Incendio!" Spark. "Incendio!" Short-lived burst. "Incendio!" Ah, there we go! Third times the charm, literally in this case. Cutty adjusted his cauldron a little to ensure even heating and began to combine the ingredients.

Text Cut: Potions Book
Aging Potion

Use/Effect:
Causes the drinker to advance in age

Ingredients:
Red Wine (100 mL)
Prune Juice (10 mL)
Hairy Fungus (2 g, mashed)
Tortoise Shell (2 g, powdered)
Caterpillar (5 g, sliced)
Bat Tongue (1, diced)

Instructions:
Prepare all ingredients as listed in the ingredients list, weighing and measuring each carefully.

Slowly heat the red wine and prune juice and begin stirring clockwise until you can just see bubbles starting to form. (The mixture will be dark purple/brown)

Immediately add the Hairy Fungus and continue to stir clockwise for ten minutes. (The mixture will slowly fade to a lighter purple/brown)

Continuing to stir clockwise, add the tortoise shell. (The mixture will be a creamy color)

After eight minutes, remove the cauldron from the heat and add the caterpillar and bat tongue, making sure to continue to stir the solution in a clockwise motion.

As the potion cools, it will turn milky white. Once it is completely cooled (about fifteen to twenty minutes), you may cease your clockwise stirring and dispense the potion into appropriate vials for storage.

100mL of red wine was followed by the prune juice in the smaller amount of 10mL. He stirred his deeply purple concoction clockwise with his stirring stick and noticed the tiny formations of bubbles starting to form. Better work fast.

Cutty quickly measured out 2g of hairy fungus, the smell of which he thought might be handy to have around, and threw it into the mortar and pestle for grinding. The tortoise shell was already powdered, which only left the caterpillar and the bat tongue to be prepared. Working urgently, Cutty mashed up the hairy fungus, checking on his potion to see that it was threatening to fully bubble in another second to two. No time to waste, he added the hairy fungus and stirred clockwise. How many times had he to do this? Cutty glanced down at the book page. 10 minutes?!!! He stared at the clock, counting down mentally in his head and stopping his caterpillar's myriad of attempts to get away during that time.

When the Professor came around he responded with, "I'm working on an Aging potion, Professor Lafay. See how it's brown and purple like? It'll turn white by the time I'm done with it." Or it had better turn white!
"Looks good so far Master Mordaunt." She said to the first year.

She looked back at her textbook, and now she needed to add the shrivelfig that... she hadn't actually peeled or crushed yet. So Adrienne went through and peeled off the thick, purpley skin and then crushed it over her cauldron, using her gloved hand as once surface and her silver knife as the other, trying to make sure all of the juice got into the cauldron. She stirred once so it was mixed - was she actually supposed to have done that? - and then lowered the flame, letting it stew while she contemplated the potential uses of this potion, assuming it actually worked. The practical portion, that is, she was all right with the theoretical. "Well, it was meant to be hair removal paste." Given that it now vaguely resembled brownish-purple curdled milk, however, she was pretty sure she'd done something terribly wrong. She wasn't entirely sure what, but definitely something. Sophie quickly cleaned her cauldron then lit a fire underneath it, wasting no time. Okay, step number one:

Sophie laid the marigold out before her and began the process of cutting them into the pieces. Then, grabbing her mortar, she crushed the ingredient until it looked fragrant and wet--just as the book suggested it look.
"Good luck..." She said...

As for what potion she was making, the seventeen year old waited quietly for her turn to speak. "I made the Basic Sleeping Draft, Professor." And she glanced down at the potion before looking up again. "And I was also wondering if I might be able to keep some of the potion." Since West had asked, she didn't see any harm in asking too.
Ariadne figured out that if she laid down and rolled, the bubble would roll with her. Hecate watched her daughter roll through the tables.... then she shook her head and turned to the girl. "I may need some of that..."

AWWW. AWW. CUTE. Awwwww.

She wiggled her fingers a little, but kept her attention rapt on the professor as she started making rounds through the classroom. She smiled politely at the woman when she reached her, "I made the Scintillation Solution, Professor. No questions at this moment, though."

Nothing pertaining to potions, anyway.
"Good." She said and nodded at the potion.

DNA... Merlin! He had totally overlooked that! Where on earth was he to find someone's DNA? He for sure wouldn't use his own! Lafay was already giving him enough nerves just being herself. He wouldn't want to imagine if she was to consume the Hate Potion of him! Frankly, Angeal was absolutely nervous, but he didn't allow it to be seen by his classmates. He rummaged his bag in hope to find something in there. He pulled out a crumpled piece of paper. Oh, hey! It was the letter Eric sent yesterday... And it had blood stains on it. He probably didn't feed the bloody bird Terrant and got bitten.

With a sly grin on his face, he cut the part of the letter which had the blood stains, tracing them with the knife slowly and added them into the potion. That ought to do the work!

Angeal waved his wand around the cauldron, just barely above its mouth. "Oh-DIE-yo-sus!" Nothing happened. One more time. "Oh-DIE-yo-sus!" Still unfortunate. "Oh-DIE-yo-sus!" Again... Several failed attempts to get the spell right, Professor Lafay finally was near his table. He raised his hand. "Professor, I made the Hate Potion and... The spell didn't seem to work," he mumbled.
"Practice it a little bit prior to doing it on the potion." She said and moved on.

When Lafay got to his table, he cleared his throat and showed her his cauldron. "Well, Professor, I'm working on the Befuddlement Draught. I'm not finished, but according to the book, it is progressing the way it should be," he explained, pointing at his blue-ish potion. "So no, I don't have any questions, except...will we have time to finish our potions?" he asked. He kind of wanted to see the end result!
"Good Master Newell," She said and moved to the look at the cauldron... "You should have the time to finish it."

Sarah felt like giving her a big hug.

A look back at her watch revealed that enough time had passed and now it was time to work on the ginger. She cut it like she was told and soon five minutes had passed and she put the ginger in the potion. She had to fight the urge to stir. She looked at her watch now and marked 20 minutes.

Then the professor came over to her, "I am making wit-sharpening potion. There seems to be more then one recipe for it in this book" Sarah said, "I chose one.. yet what are the differences between them?". Sarah's eyes happen to wonder across the room to the little girl. "If you need someone to take care of her, play with her or what ever, I would love to help. I have a nephew her age so I am used to it. I know the stories that are told, games that are played... and if you want her to go to sleep I know how to rub her back and sing her lullabies. I do have 20 minutes before the next step."
"Ignore Ariadne..." She said and looked at the potion.. Looked good!

SPOILER!!: Potion

Basic Sleeping Draft

Use/Effect:
The basic sleeping draft is to be used before bedtime in order to aid in sleeping. However, it should not be used longer than a week or two or one may start falling asleep at odd times of the day.

Ingredients:
water (500mL)
lavender (a pinch; crushed)
chamomile (a handful; crushed)
for nightmares: purslane (a pinch)
for more powerful brew: ginger (a pinch)

Instructions:
Bring water to a slow boil.
Add lavender and stir 21 times, counter-clockwise.
Add chamomile and let simmer for 20 minutes (potion should be pale, clear, purple with a tint of green, though the green may not always be observable)
For nightmares: add a pinch of purslane and stir 5 times, counter-clockwise
For a more powerful brew: add a pinch of ginger and stir 5 times, counter-clockwise

Notes:
Potion can be stored for up to a month, though it is advisable to brew a fresh batch weekly.
"That's one of my best potions..." She told the children.

QUOTE=amadshade;11454153]Tora looked up from reading the recipe for her second potion when she noticed Professor Lafay by her desk. Of course she had noticed the disturbance when the Professor entered the room, but it hadn't really registered until she had to explain what she was doing.

Tora gestured to her completed Hair Changing Potion at the front of her desk. "I completed one potion, specifically to use in the upcoming game against Slytherin," at this she winced slightly. Perhaps it was not a good idea to remind this Slytherin professor of the upcoming game when she was in her class. Ahem. "...and I was planning on making another potion too. Originally I wanted to do the Scintillation Solution, but now I'm not so sure," she added looking up from where she sat at her desk into Lafay's face.

"This will be good." She told them.

"Ok, sounds goOOOOD!" Caleb said, when to his horror, just as he was finishing his sentence...his voice cracked. OMG. HOW EMBARRASSING. And in front of a family member too! He really hoped nobody else had heard that. Blushing and trying to hide the fact that his face was turning a terrible shade of Gryffindor red, he looked back at the potions book and tried to stop himself from blushing again.

"Ok, add the five lovage leaves, then let simmer for 10 minutes before stirring ten times counter clockwise," Caleb read aloud. Taking his five leaves, he dropped them in and then leaned back. Time to relax again. Omg he could not believe his voice had just cracked. It had happened before but thankfully only around his parents or when he was talking to himself...

Ohh? Some Ravenclaw had done TWO potions?! Sophie suddenly wondered if it would be appropriate to ask to have his and ditch hers. Less work for her, and hey, she could turn in somebody else's hard work for her own points, right? Right? ... Err.

Yeah, right...that was more like it.

Sophie knew that and therefore started on the next step of her potion.

Quote:
Take a silver knife and cut the aloe leaf at a 90 degree angle. Squeeze the gel out of the leaf and into the cauldron.
Sheesh, so precise of a measurement. Sophie guessed it was one of those situations where you needed just enough and not too little or too much. She measured out the best ninety degree angle she could manage and then used the silver knife to cut the aloe leaf. She then squeezed the gel out of the leaf and into the cauldron.

He'd been at the receiving end of WAY too many of those to trouble himself over them. Teachers got mad at him and there really wasn't all that much he could do about it.

"Well, this was my first time making a potion and since you weren't here I picked the ones that seemed most simple and doable to me. But the first one I did took about five minutes so I figured I'd make another one just to get more practice.. Is that bad?" Benzi asked, his face a mask of innocence. Of course, he didn't know what he was guilty of, but clearly it was bad so best keep a straight face.

"I'm happy to know she isn't sick, Mrs Lafay." I'd love to see her casting her magic, the girl added in thought. "I'm glad to know my potion looks good. I'll try hard next time to make it perfect."

She grinned at the teacher, although, indeed, Annabeth got disappointed. So she couldn't get out and have fun with the toddler, despite her potion was ready and her table cleaned. Although Professor Lafay hadn't answered her question about how to test the potion without poisoning a person previously, she gave her two precious informations: 1) her potion looked good (then it should work); she should be studying (rather than reading a novel). At least Ariadne wasn't sick and it made her happy.

Quickly, she shoved the novel back into her bag and picked up her Potions book once again. She didn't know what to do. Anna looked at Ariadne trying to not call her attention, then to the teacher's desk, on which there were some phials with other students' potions. Glasswall peered to read their labels. Scintillation Solution, shrinking solution, Wit-Sharpening Potion, Magicleanse, Draught of Peace, Basic Sleeping Draft, Dreamer's Elixir, calming drought, Wit-Sharpening Potion....

She thought it would be useful to read about them in her book, then flipped through the book and found the Scintillation Solution. It didn't seem to be a useful potion, though it was always good to learn useless things when you didn't have anything else to do.

One more minute of stirring, and then Cutty could add the powdered tortoise shell. His eyes never left the clock even as the Professor's baby fussed within her bubble and his best friend went on to roll high and brew a 2nd potion, and as soon as the laast of the 60 seconds was up, Cutty carefully added the 2g of tortoise shell. He looked down at his potion as he continued to stir in a clockwise motion noting the colour change from a dirty purple to a cream sort of shade. Eight more minutes. Merlin this potion was a lot of stirring! The caterpillar meanwhile squirmed beneath an open phial that had been upturned into a make shift bell jar imprisonment, stubbornly trying to get out. It knew it was gunna die.

Cutty took up his wand and released the caterpillar from it's cell, but only briefly as before it could crawl away the boy had taken it's head off and began to slice its body. One less butterfly for the spring. It was a lovely colour, however. He wondered if there was a superior breed of caterpillar that made any difference whatever in the final result. He quickly followed that with the bat tongue, which took longer to cut into the dices using the spell he'd learned for Herbology. Two more minutes, then he could take it off of the heat. Cutty watched the clock.

Minute was up! He removed his cauldron from its heat source, then he grabbed hold of the sliced caterpillar and added it to the now creamish concoction, following it with the bat tongue. Cutty continued his eager stirring, but had to switch arms by now. He noted the time on the clock and allowed himself a question. What magical properties were there in bats tongue? Cause he felt like he understood the caterpillar, and the prune juice was almost self-explanatory, but the bat tongues. There wasn't a great deal Cutty knew about bats. Preferring to be independent, though, he made it a point to research it later.

Text Cut: Potions Book
Aging Potion

Use/Effect:
Causes the drinker to advance in age

Ingredients:
Red Wine (100 mL)
Prune Juice (10 mL)
Hairy Fungus (2 g, mashed)
Tortoise Shell (2 g, powdered)
Caterpillar (5 g, sliced)
Bat Tongue (1, diced)

Instructions:
Prepare all ingredients as listed in the ingredients list, weighing and measuring each carefully.

Slowly heat the red wine and prune juice and begin stirring clockwise until you can just see bubbles starting to form. (The mixture will be dark purple/brown)

Immediately add the Hairy Fungus and continue to stir clockwise for ten minutes. (The mixture will slowly fade to a lighter purple/brown)

Continuing to stir clockwise, add the tortoise shell. (The mixture will be a creamy color)

After eight minutes, remove the cauldron from the heat and add the caterpillar and bat tongue, making sure to continue to stir the solution in a clockwise motion.

As the potion cools, it will turn milky white. Once it is completely cooled (about fifteen to twenty minutes), you may cease your clockwise stirring and dispense the potion into appropriate vials for storage.

Home stretch now. He just needed to stir until cool. Then he could phial it and test it, of course...yes. Test it. That's what we'll call it.

Default um yeah doing this in one post hope thats okay...Just recently got back on...
Upon A Star Arista's bae

Narumi flipped open her potions textbook, and pointed.....Scintillation Solution, okay sounded good. She waved her wand and said "Scourgify," and gave that cauldron a good cleaning before adding the water. "Aguamenti!" filling the cauldron halfway with water, and then starting a fire underneath it.

Taking the oranges she began to juice them with the silver knife after she cast scourgify on that as well. After juicing the oranges added the juice into the cauldron. Now the next step said to add the Billywig Stinger, she carefully added it to the potion, and then looked back at her textbook for the next step. Time to lower the flame, picking up her wand she lowered the flame.

Crushing the dried ginger root was next. She put it into her mortar she started to crush it until it was powdery. She then added that and the sugar. Reading the next step she blinked... Okay... So five peppermint leaves so five counter clockwise turns then. Doing one counter clockwise turn she added in a peppermint leaf, another stir, another leaf, another stir, another leaf, another stir, another leaf, another stir, another leaf. And lastly the final stir afterwards.

Narumi smiled, making potions was fun!!

Oh look there was the Professor, "Um, Hi Professor. I am making the Scintillation Solution!" Yeah and nope she had zero questions.....

Squeeze the fluid of 20 firefly bulbs into the cauldron. Cool! Picking up the first bulb she carefully squeezed the fluid into the cauldron before going onto the next one. Second Firefly bulb. Third Firefly bulb. Fourth Firefly bulb. Fifth Firefly bulb. Sixth Firefly bulb. Seven Firefly bulb. Eight Firefly bulb. Ninth Firefly bulb. Tenth Firefly bulb. Eleventh Firefly bulb. Twelveth Firefly bulb. Thirteenth Firefly bulb. Fourteenth Firefly bulb. Fifteenth Firefly bulb. Sixteenth Firefly bulb. Seventeenth Firefly bulb. Eighteenth Firefly bulb. Nineteenth Firefly bulb. Twentieth Firefly bulb.

Finally she squeezed all twenty of them into the cauldron.

Then she added the clabbert pustules whole, all nine of them. Picking up her spoon she stirred the potion once counter clockwise, and the once, twice, and thrice clockwise. She picked up the Magnesium Gluconate Liquid and dropped two drops and then quickly added the Flobberworm Mucus afterwards. Picking up the runespoor eggs she giggled as she removed the shells. It was kinda cold... Since they were frozen. After peeling all of the shells off she picked up the powdered purple moonstone and sprinkled them over the frozen eggs. After doing so she added the three eggs into the cauldron, and remembered not to stir afterwards.

Picking up her wand she waved in a circular motion over the cauldron and said "Vividus Excandesco!"

Afterwards she placed some into some viles and placed a name tag on them,

UGH.

She was meant to be finished soon, and Sophie still had a few more steps to go. Then she had to bottle her potion, label it, etc., etc., etc. Suddenly, she felt really rushed, which caused her to have a moment of confusion with her potion. What step was she on again? Oh. Right...

Quote:
Slash the Plantain leaves with the diffindo charm, careful not to fully cut them. Wring them out letting the juice from them drip into the cauldron.
Diffindo. Ugh. Sophie hated the way all of the professors seemed to expect the students to already know the charms involved in their classes. She knew what Diffindo was, but...she hadn't exactly done the spell before. Oh, well. First time for everything.

She retrieved her wand and aimed it toward the plantain leaves. Flicking it forward, she said, "Diffindo!" Oh, heyy...it worked. Strange little coincidence. She began wringing out the leaves and letting the juice drip into the cauldron.

Oh, the professor was back... with her kid again. Mo watched the bubble baby with some interest before realizing she'd asked a question. He hadn't bottled any of us, but that was because it needed some extra time...

Erm. Mo raised his hand. "Professor, I made the Devomotion Potion for developing moving pictures. I know it needs to simmer for a month, and I was hoping maybe I could let it simmer in the lab. I'd really like to see how it turns out." And also, he'd really like to use it to develop pictures and see if it worked. Mo jumped backwards as the baby rolled across his toes, although he tried his best to keep a fixed smile on his face.

Nearly perfect finished product.

Kat wasn't exactly sure if she was allowed to say something? Yeah? No? She'd go with yeah because Professor Lafay did say something nice about her potion. "Glad to know that, Professor. Thank you," the Head Girl said with a nod then she looked at her potion. Awesome. So at least she didn't do anything wrong, right? Of course. She'd never done a potion that ever went bad. But yeah, it was nice to know since it came from the Professor herself.

But... nearly perfect. She'd try to make that definitely perfect soon. Just watch. Wasn't that the reason why they even had to go to school? A few more months left of it then...

See? THIS was why she wanted to be good and done before the Professor got back. Bloody potion making her take so long because of all the steps. Her brows crinkled as she got ready to make her final appeal. Would groveling work? She wasn't above that you know. Not at all.

"But Professor, pleeeeeeeeeeease??? I worked real hard on the whole thing? What'll happen to the rest if I only get to keep one vial and it's only for homework?? Can't I pleeease keep more than that?? Please??? I don't get a chance to glow BLUE very often." Yes, yes she WAS making pathetic pleading faces to the Professor. She would have clung to her while she begged but for two reasons she didn't. One, she was no longer 11 and two, she valued her life.

The begging was still happening though.

Sophie looked around the room, trying to guess how much time she had left, if any at all. Most others seemed to still be working, and the professor wasn't telling everybody to pack it up yet, so she guessed she was good. She only had two more steps anyway.

Quote:
Let simmer on a low flame for 30 minutes and drop in the Essense of Murtlap and the Vitamin E.
Sophie turned down the temperature to a low flame and took note of the time. Thirty minutes. Got it. In the meantime, she began to drop in the Essence of Murtlap. *drop drop drop drop* There. Four drops, just as the book said to do. Now for the Vitamin E, which she needed five drops of. *drop drop drop drop drop*

Okay...one more step to go!

Might as well ask, right? West put his hand up.

"Professor, I know you said to take only one vial but since this potion, the Dreamer's Elixir, has two different effects depending on when you stop the brewing process, I took a vial at the first stage as well as the last stage, could I take one of each and compare them, maybe?"

It was kind of important actually, and he wasn't really sure which option would work best for his purposes, so West wanted to try both.

WOOT!

Just one more step in the process, and Sophie will have finished her very first potion to brew all by herself! She'd done AMAZING, she knew. That was mainly because the cauldron hadn't exploded or nothing had boiled over and ruined. Nevermind the fact that that could still technically happen. She just wouldn't think about that part.

Add brown sugar and baking soda. Again turn three times clockwise then one counter clockwise, repeating until the mixture is a paste.
Sophie measured out the brown sugar and baking soda then added in both. Then she began stirring three times clockwise and once counter clockwise. She repeated the process, waiting for the mixture to turn into a paste-like substance.

"No." She said turning towards the boy. If she gave him permission she'd have to give the Cambridge the same, and that wasn't happening.

Uhhh....

Yes? No? I don't know?!

Sophie wasn't even sure what this was supposed to look like in its final stage, so whatever she said in answer to that question was a complete and total guess. "Yes?" she replied, her answer coming out more like a question.

She didn't suppose the professor would allow her to light something on fire to test that, hmm? Nah. Likely not. "Just bottling it and labeling it now."

Sophie bottled a sample of the potion then began labeling it. It read:

Sophie Newell
1st year Slytherin

OH, YEAH. She was a master potioneer now.

This potion was labour intensive.. well not really. Yet it was not consistant, after allowing her potion to simmer for twenty minutes she had to stir every three minutes. She did a stir and watched her watch. Two minutes and thirty seconds later she decided to tick for each time she stirred, each counter clockwise stir got a tick on the right corner of a scrap piece of partchment, while a stir clockwise got a tick in the left.
She then stirred in the other direction, gave a tick and waited. The pattern repeated itself. change direction...Stir...tick...wait... Until she haad seven ticks on her scrap. She held her hand over the potion.. no heat coming off it.

She then added the right amount of drops of the bile. Now more waiting. She was trying so hard to ignore the child.

By the time eight minutes came around Sarah had a major headache due to the smell of the potion. She was feeling nauseous. ugh. Maybe she should not have tried it.

She tried to ignore the pain as she bottled her potion. She labled it as follows:

"Once potion turns mint green, it is completed," Caleb read. He'd been letting his potion simmer as the book commanded, and he peered inside his cauldron. It looked pretty green - what exactly constituted MINT green though? Mint like the ice cream flavor or the actual color of a mint leaf? Because right now it was about somewhere in between.

Bottling up a vial of his potion, he labeled it with his name and year and smiled, proud of himself for actually FINISHING the potion, and during his first lesson at that!

Kace was having fun with this activity. He was doing everything right. He allowed the potion to simmer until it turned purple. He looked at his next set of directions and saw what he needed to do.

SPOILER!!: Kace's Notebook!

7.Shake powdered porcupine quills vigorously until they are ready and then add until the potion turns red.
8.Stir until the potion turns orange.
9.Add more porcupine quills until the potion turns turquoise.
10.Allow to simmer till the potion turns purple.
11.Add powdered unicorn horn until the potion turns pink.
12.Stir until the potion turns red.
13.Allow to simmer until the potion turns purple.
14.Add more powdered moonstone until the potion turns grey.
15.Allow the potion to simmer until it turns orange.
16.Add more powdered porcupine quills until the potion turns white.

He was up to step 7. He took the powdered porcupine quills and shook them vigorously.

Shake...shake....shake...shake....shake...and a little more shaking. Then once he felt he was ready he added them to his potion till it turned red. The he took his ladle and stirred it till it was orange. He was getting good at this. Now he saw he needed to add more porcupine quills. He didn't have enough so he went to the cupboard and got more.

He added some more till it turned turquoise and then he allowed it to simmer till it turned purple. It didn't take too long because now the potion was at the temperature it needed to be. Then he saw he needed to add powdered unicorn horn. He found it and he added it to the potion and then he stirred it again with his ladle until it turned red! He was smiling how well this potion was going. Then he had to let it simmer some more until it turned purple.

He only had three more steps to go. He could do this! He found the moonstone and added it to the potion until it turned grey and then he allowed it to simmer till it was orange.

Good thing he got more porcupine quills because he added a few more till it turned white and then he was done with the potion! Now he just needed to label it.

GOSH, SOMEBODY had clearly woken up on the wrong side of the cauldron.

Tobias tried his super hardest to not smile too widely while Professor Lafay could still see him. He simply couldn't just not smile, y'know? But he'd TRY. Because he was told to...

...

...

... no, it was too difficult.

ON WITH THE POTION!

The stirring was meant to be done during the simmering, right? Yeah? Toby had no idea, but figured he'd just go ahead and assume so, because that's what the instructions made it sound like. He grabbed the stirrer and stirred his potion three times counter clockwise.

The intructions didn't tell him any specific amount of time until he was supposed to stir the potion next, so Tobias just waited a few minutes before repeating the action... and then again... and then again.

Four sets of three counter-clockwise stirs done, Tobias put the lid on the cauldron and got to work on grinding down them scarab beetles. He still had some time left for the potion to complete the 30 minutes, and by that time he'd totally mashed up them beetles good. Tobias removed the lid again, sprinkled the beetle powder inside and replaced the lid once more.

NOW MOAR WAITING

Keeping an eye on the time, Tobias began to tidy up his workstation some more, cleaning everything and putting his own ingredients back into his potions kit, and leaving out what needed to be returned to the store cupboard in the classroom.

*SOME TIME LATER*

As the end of the 45 minutes drew nearer, Tobias found himself checking the time more frequently. He didn't want to screw things up this far into the process. That would not be cool.

As the last second ticked over and brought Toby to the 45 minute mark, the Hufflepuff lifted the lid off his cauldron and peered inside.

There WAS significantly less in there, though whether it was exactly half or not, Toby couldn't tell. And it was purple too. Dark purple. Though it was pretty dark in here, so it could be a trick of the light. BUT TOBY WAS A POSITIVE PERSON. As far as he was concerned, everything had gone exactly to plan and nothing had gone wrong.

With a grin on his face (HE COULDN'T HELP IT) Tobias removed the cauldron from the heat and extinguished the flame. Whilst he let that cool, he quickly wrote up a label for a vial to be handed in.

And now for ye olde ladling. Tobias took his ladle and spooned the kinda thick potion into it carefully, trying to be extra careful not to get it anywhere but inside the vial. With that done, he sealed the vial with a tap of his wand and affixed the label. WAS HE ALLOWED TO SMILE NOW? 'Cause he kinda already was.

SPOILER!!: Notes
Wit-Sharpening potion

Use/Effect:
Sharpens the intelligence and comprehension of the drinker.

Ingredients:
  • 5 grams of ground scarab beetle
  • 2.5 grams of cut up ginger root
  • 500ml of Armadillo bile
  • 8 grams of Fluxweed

Instructions:
  • Crush Fluxweed. Pour Armadillo Bile into cauldron.
  • Bring to a boil.
  • When potion has reached a roaring boil, add Fluxweed.
  • Stir potion 5 times clockwise. Let potion boil for 10 minutes stirring occasionally as needed. Do Not Allow The Potion to Boil Over.
  • Peel ginger root and chop fine. When time is up, add ginger to potion.
  • Reduce heat. The potion needs to come to a simmer for 30 minutes.
  • Stir potion counter-clockwise 3 times. The potion must be stirred counter-clockwise 3 times an additional 3 times while it simmers. Place the lid on the cauldron.
  • Grind Scarab Beetles to a find powder.
  • Sprinkle the powder over the potion. Replace lid.
  • Let potion brew for 45 minutes.
  • When time has elapsed, the potion will have reduced by half and now be a deep purple. If it is not, then you have done something wrong.
  • Remove cauldron from heat and let cool. The potion should now have a slightly thick consistency. Ladle potion into individual vials. Seal by using a sealing charm. Potion should remain potent for three month if sealed properly.

Cutty had been looking down at his potion then up at the clock for about 15 minutes. He was impatient for his potion to cool so that he could stop stirring. He had, of course, switched arms several times while waiting for the time that he could at last stop stirring. It was at least a nice white shade that Cutty thought would pass for a milky white as the book described. Could a potion be the correct colour...and perhaps smell as intended, but still fail to do what it was brewed to do? Although, he would've loathed to fail he was ultimately too curious to find the results. Too hungry for information.

When the steam had stopped coming from his cauldron, he removed his stirring stick from the potion and watched it swirl a bit before grabbing one of his phials-a deeply purple one that sort of mimicked the shade of the potion in it's earlier stages of brewing. Very carefully, he ladled a portion of the magic liquid into the phial and popped a stopper onto the end. He took a label, as with his ink quill wrote down the information required for his teacher.

Aging Potion

Text Cut: Potions Book
Aging Potion

Use/Effect:
Causes the drinker to advance in age

Ingredients:
Red Wine (100 mL)
Prune Juice (10 mL)
Hairy Fungus (2 g, mashed)
Tortoise Shell (2 g, powdered)
Caterpillar (5 g, sliced)
Bat Tongue (1, diced)

Instructions:
Prepare all ingredients as listed in the ingredients list, weighing and measuring each carefully.

Slowly heat the red wine and prune juice and begin stirring clockwise until you can just see bubbles starting to form. (The mixture will be dark purple/brown)

Immediately add the Hairy Fungus and continue to stir clockwise for ten minutes. (The mixture will slowly fade to a lighter purple/brown)

Continuing to stir clockwise, add the tortoise shell. (The mixture will be a creamy color)

After eight minutes, remove the cauldron from the heat and add the caterpillar and bat tongue, making sure to continue to stir the solution in a clockwise motion.

As the potion cools, it will turn milky white. Once it is completely cooled (about fifteen to twenty minutes), you may cease your clockwise stirring and dispense the potion into appropriate vials for storage.

He held up his little phial, staring at it through the dim lights of the potions classroom letting it hypnotize him and feed his imagination.
