Hecate sat on the corner of her desk, listening to a tune in her her head no one else could hear. She swayed back and forth lightly, until her clock struck the hour her class would begin. Her face turned serious again, and she went behind her desk, waving her want to unlock the door.
Now that the door to the classroom was unlocked... kids just needed to begin filing in.
ooc: This class will stay open until October18th. Also thanks to Nixy! and AuroraQuinn for taking the picture of the Potions Classroom for me, and to Anna Banana for making it into a pretty graphic!

Hecate looked over and said "That's not going to work... It may work on your nanny, but I'll be sent to Hades on a basilisk before you hang me upsidedown kid by my feet."
She smirked as the child looked away.
"That was the 5th nanny..." she said under her breath and shook her head.
She then looked at the class and eyed their potions. "Well... things look... decent..." So she began walking through the tables and said "Which potion are you working on?" and "Do you have any questions?"

Wade merely smiled at Min. He liked how caring she was to him, making sure he didn't fail over a supposed little risk. Especially after she did quite well with her potion and everything. So she may have a point on the scent, since not everyone was as enthused with pickles as Wade, even if it had some hint of lemon too. The only thing going for him was on what the book said about how the scents won't affect how the potion works. Ah well, there was no turning back now even if he had doubts as the door opened.
Wade turned his head, smiling at the sight of Professor Lafay who was not only back safe, but she wasn't alone. Wow, her beautiful baby daughter had grown so much over the last year. It made him think about his future siblings, like what if he had a baby sister.. but his thoughts went away as soon as Professor Lafay addressed the class again.
Cool.. and they get to share their potion. When his turn came, he held his up for her. "My potion's Magicleanse.. The scent it leaves is pickles with a hint of lemon." Well, dropping a whole pickle with part of a dried lemon gave it that.. Now did he have any questions? "No, no questions here, Professor." Least not that he could think of right away.
Taylor glanced up at the professor as she approached her table. "I made Draught of Peace... and nope... no questions..." She glanced down and relaxed. After a few moments, Tay looked around and then started to fiddle with her hair. Taylor made sure that all of her things were neatly packed and ready to go as soon as Professor Lafay told them they could go. She made sure that her wand was securely packed in her holster and she smiled at her few friends and ignored the way to Brodie. Brodie... blech...

Sky sort of flinched when the door slammed open, but that quickly dissolved into her trying not to laugh as she listened to Lafay speak to her daughter. Sounded like she had a handful on her hands. But what had happened to the other nannies (as it was obvious what had happened this time)?
Anyway, as the professor begin making the rounds to see what they'd all made, she listened, rolling her eyes occasionally at the simple mindedness of some of her older classmates. "I made Magical Fireworks, professor. And nope, no questions," she said, with a slight smile, once it was her turn. Totally had this in the bag.

Just when Sonea was done with cleaning everything end when she was waiting for the professor to return she saw her. She looked at the potions everybody had made and... nervous she looked at her own potion, it didn't had exploded this time, so... maybe it was good enough! "Eh, hello professor" spoke the third year old quick when the professor stood besides her table. "I have made a Basic Sleeping Draft" and she showed the professor her potion. Please, let it be good, please... spoke the third year old in silence to herself while she crossed her fingers behind her back. She really DIDN'T wanted to have a bad grade of this lesson so she hoped that the professor would be satisfied with her work...

"I made the Dreamer's Elixir, professor. Through to the final step." He indicated the labeled vials which contained the clear liquid. "Can I keep some of the potion to test myself?"

Hehehe. Manners. What was Professor Head of House going to do? Spank him?
But noted nonetheless. The Professor had gone, though and in the interim, Cutty had found himself in the midst of his first potions lesson teaching himself his first potion. A thought his budding but nearly fully-bloomed independent side found very exciting.
He had hesitated long before deciding on which potion to brew. Could there BE a wrong choice? Something that wouldn't take too long, and something that a wizard with his experience could feasibly make with few difficulties. He paged through his Potions book and found what he thought might have been the egg-fart smell: Noxious Potion. Which Cutty thought sounded quite novel. Something the ladies would hate. Something he could slip into someone's perfume bottle for the up-comming Valentine's Day holiday. But paging more through his potions book had changed his mind again. His eyes stopped and he drew a deep inhale at the next words he saw.
S h a h a r a z a l m
And what it did only made it all the more enticing! Reading through the instructions however proved that it would be timely with it's grinding on the moonstone and having to learn a new charm just to prepare some of the ingredients. Cutty dog-eared the page deciding THAT was going to be the potion he challenged himself on during his Hogwarts career.
The next potion that Cutty came across painted vivid visuals in his mind about pustules. And he thought, that if he could brew the Boil Bursting Unction properly the effects would be a splendour of puss and whatever that white substance in blemishes was. But suppose they had to try out the potion themselves? Having not gotten to the age where his acne was anything to boast about, Cutty imagined he would have to either be handy with a jinx for pimples or brew up a potion that would allow him to grow his own in a very short period of time. He flipped more and more, thinking he'd found nothing until finally his eyes set upon a truly wonderful idea.

Aging Potion
Use/Effect:
Causes the drinker to advance in age
Ingredients:
Red Wine (100 mL)
Prune Juice (10 mL)
Hairy Fungus (2 g, mashed)
Tortoise Shell (2 g, powdered)
Caterpillar (5 g, sliced)
Bat Tongue (1, diced)
Instructions:
Prepare all ingredients as listed in the ingredients list, weighing and measuring each carefully.
Slowly heat the red wine and prune juice and begin stirring clockwise until you can just see bubbles starting to form. (The mixture will be dark purple/brown)
Immediately add the Hairy Fungus and continue to stir clockwise for ten minutes. (The mixture will slowly fade to a lighter purple/brown)
Continuing to stir clockwise, add the tortoise shell. (The mixture will be a creamy color)
After eight minutes, remove the cauldron from the heat and add the caterpillar and bat tongue, making sure to continue to stir the solution in a clockwise motion.
As the potion cools, it will turn milky white. Once it is completely cooled (about fifteen to twenty minutes), you may cease your clockwise stirring and dispense the potion into appropriate vials for storage.
Red wine? Caterpillar? Bat tongue? This was going to be meaty. Cutty hurried off to the storage cabinet to gather his ingredients, trying to hurry before the now returned Professor Head of House got to his table and not yet registering what the Newells had said about their Professor in her absence in not so quiet voices. Meh. Maybe it had been a bad idea to sit near Caleb.
For a Hufflepuff, Tobias was really impatient sometimes. It was just that, when you were waiting for something, you had to be still. He'd done all he could to stay busy over the 10 minutes. The ginger root was all peeled and chopped up really fine and he'd made extra sure that was done thoroughly until there was no way he could justify spending more time on it. But now he was reduced to watching the hourglass count down the ten minutes, chin rested on arms which were folded on the tabletop. Every now and then he'd check the potion and give it another stir if it looked like it needed it. Of course, Tobias didn't really know how to tell when a particular potion needed stirring, but the instructions said to do the thing and so Toby did the thing.
Eventually, Tobias kind of glazed over as he watched the hourglass, and started to come to just in time, because the last of the sand had dropped. Tobias grinned and sat up straight again, immediately going for the chopped up ginger root.
Once he'd dumped that into the potion, Tobias turned down the heat and...
... oh...
... more waiting.
30 whole minutes, too, while the potion simmered. With a tiny groan of frustration, Tobias left the potion to it and started readying the scarab beetles so he could grind them up for a later step in the potion making process. As he was doing that, Lafay passed by his desk.
"I'm making a Wit-Sharpening potion," he said simply, with a big bright smile directed at the potions mistress. HAPPY VIBES, PROFESSOR. FEEL THE HAPPY.
SPOILER!!: Notes
Wit-Sharpening potion
Use/Effect:
Sharpens the intelligence and comprehension of the drinker.
Ingredients:
5 grams of ground scarab beetle
2.5 grams of cut up ginger root
500ml of Armadillo bile
8 grams of Fluxweed
Instructions:
Crush Fluxweed. Pour Armadillo Bile into cauldron.
Bring to a boil.
When potion has reached a roaring boil, add Fluxweed.
Stir potion 5 times clockwise. Let potion boil for 10 minutes stirring occasionally as needed. Do Not Allow The Potion to Boil Over.
Peel ginger root and chop fine. When time is up, add ginger to potion.
Reduce heat. The potion needs to come to a simmer for 30 minutes.
Stir potion counter-clockwise 3 times. The potion must be stirred counter-clockwise 3 times an additional 3 times while it simmers. Place the lid on the cauldron.
Grind Scarab Beetles to a find powder.
Sprinkle the powder over the potion. Replace lid.
Let potion brew for 45 minutes.
When time has elapsed, the potion will have reduced by half and now be a deep purple. If it is not, then you have done something wrong.
Remove cauldron from heat and let cool. The potion should now have a slightly thick consistency. Ladle potion into individual vials. Seal by using a sealing charm. Potion should remain potent for three month if sealed properly.

Oooh, professor alert. Look sharp. Theo watched as she brought in a child and trapped it in a bubble. That was a good idea. Where could HE learn this spell? When professor Lafay got to his table, Theo sat up straight and smiled with pride. "I made a Wit-Sharpening Potion." Which seemed quite a popular choice when he listened in to the others speak.
Darn.
Anyway... he pointed at his vial, still beaming.

As someone who was never exposed to the wizarding world despite growing up in a wizarding family, Angeal felt excited, but agitated as he handled the dragon scales. He put them into the mortar and crushed them until they turn into powdery substance. He took some and sprinkled into the cauldron, repeating the step until there was no more powder left. Then, he stirred the potion once in a clockwise direction, then gently dropped the essence of devil's snare.
Switching his attention back to the mortar, the first year performed the Scouring Charm on it again. Putting the biting toadstool fangs into it, he then crushed them until they turned crystal-like substance. Angeal grabbed the ladle near him a scooped some of the potion from the cauldron into the mortar. And now waiting for the granules to dissolve...

Wave wand over cauldron in a circular motion. Incantation: Odiosus.
Brew for 2 hours.
Cutty returned to his desk carrying all of the ingredient he remembered he'd be needing for his potion. Good thing it didn't involve too many ingredients. He began to measure them out so that he could put away the rest.
The boy had seen his mother brew potions enough times to know that the first step was to clean the cauldron. Not to mention Hufflepuff Prefect McHAIR had said it outloud a few moments ago. He had caught glimpses of a few of the other students using their wands to perform this task and wanted to try it too. Cutty laid out his instruments, a stirring stick, a scale, a knife, mortar and pestle and his cauldron, all of which were previously cleaned if not new. Waving his wand, he said the incantation, "Scourgify!" for each item and checking his results after each was self-satisfied that he'd done something there. Though, whether he had or not would've been hard to tell.
What was that spell they were using for lighting their fires? He took his wand and pointed it at his burner. "Incendio!" Spark. "Incendio!" Short-lived burst. "Incendio!" Ah, there we go! Third times the charm, literally in this case. Cutty adjusted his cauldron a little to ensure even heating and began to combine the ingredients.

100mL of red wine was followed by the prune juice in the smaller amount of 10mL. He stirred his deeply purple concoction clockwise with his stirring stick and noticed the tiny formations of bubbles starting to form. Better work fast.
Cutty quickly measured out 2g of hairy fungus, the smell of which he thought might be handy to have around, and threw it into the mortar and pestle for grinding. The tortoise shell was already powdered, which only left the caterpillar and the bat tongue to be prepared. Working urgently, Cutty mashed up the hairy fungus, checking on his potion to see that it was threatening to fully bubble in another second to two. No time to waste, he added the hairy fungus and stirred clockwise. How many times had he to do this? Cutty glanced down at the book page. 10 minutes?!!! He stared at the clock, counting down mentally in his head and stopping his caterpillar's myriad of attempts to get away during that time.
When the Professor came around he responded with, "I'm working on an Aging potion, Professor Lafay. See how it's brown and purple like? It'll turn white by the time I'm done with it." Or it had better turn white!
Adrienne felt like... something was not quite right. She was pretty sure her potion was not actually supposed to be this colour, nor was it likely that it was supposed to be that gelatinous-feeling, either. It was actually getting hard to stir when she looked at her watch and found that her five minutes were up, thankfully. Her arm had been starting to hurt!
She looked back at her textbook, and now she needed to add the shrivelfig that... she hadn't actually peeled or crushed yet. So Adrienne went through and peeled off the thick, purpley skin and then crushed it over her cauldron, using her gloved hand as once surface and her silver knife as the other, trying to make sure all of the juice got into the cauldron. She stirred once so it was mixed - was she actually supposed to have done that? - and then lowered the flame, letting it stew while she contemplated the potential uses of this potion, assuming it actually worked. She could put it on someone's head while they were sleeping and wait to see their reaction when they woke up bald... or, even more easily, she could get rid of someone's eyebrows and then they'd look incredibly stupid and not be able to just put a wig on. Perfect, now she just had to decide whom to use it on...

...oh, Lafay was back. Adrienne wasn't expecting her to have returned so soon. And she was asking questions, too? About their potions? Merlin, she hated this class. The practical portion, that is, she was all right with the theoretical. "Well, it was meant to be hair removal paste." Given that it now vaguely resembled brownish-purple curdled milk, however, she was pretty sure she'd done something terribly wrong. She wasn't entirely sure what, but definitely something. "Is it... supposed to look like that?"

Oh, ...GREAT.
So this was an emergency about somebody in Sophie's family, although, it wasn't the kind of emergency she'd imagined. She had pictured somebody in some terrible broom accident or the victim of a spell gone wrong. What she hadn't imagined was a toddler, who was technically her Aunt Ariadne, being pulled into the classroom in a pouting fit.
Embarrassing...
Sophie looked up as her grandmother passed by her work station. "I'm making the Brann G-ni-ster..." whatever... "Unction," she said. Only, she was just getting started. She only had the ingredients laid out before her. Hopefully that little fact would go unrecognized.
Sophie quickly cleaned her cauldron then lit a fire underneath it, wasting no time. Okay, step number one:
Quote:
Cut and then Crush the Marigold with a marble mortar until they are fragrant and wet.
Sophie laid the marigold out before her and began the process of cutting them into the pieces. Then, grabbing her mortar, she crushed the ingredient until it looked fragrant and wet--just as the book suggested it look.

So that's where Professor Lafay had gone, to get her daughter? A daughter who was going to be a handful, clearly. Ella tilted her head as the little girl defiantly turned away from her mother, amused. She made sure her expression remained neutral, though. The last thing she needed was to get in trouble.
As for what potion she was making, the seventeen year old waited quietly for her turn to speak. "I made the Basic Sleeping Draft, Professor." And she glanced down at the potion before looking up again. "And I was also wondering if I might be able to keep some of the potion." Since West had asked, she didn't see any harm in asking too.

Cat had been sufficiently happy with the cleanliness of everything in her sight and had begun to wonder, once again, where Lafay had gone off to? Like.. was she okay? She was her Head of House. One worries. She was very glad to see the woman return but she was super surprised to see a little girl with her.
AWWW. AWW. CUTE. Awwwww.
She wiggled her fingers a little, but kept her attention rapt on the professor as she started making rounds through the classroom. She smiled politely at the woman when she reached her, "I made the Scintillation Solution, Professor. No questions at this moment, though."

Alec, who had been staring down at his notes, jumped a little when the door opened. His eyes widened as he looked between the Professor and... OH HEY! Little Professor! She had grown up quite a bit since the last time she had been here. ... So... this was the emergency? Her daughter? That was better than someone being hurt, yeah?
His potion? He waited for Lafay to reach his desk before smiling a little at her and saying, "Erm... I made the Antillergen Potion, Professor." Which didn't seem to be a potion that many other people had made. ... Was this a good thing? Because it was different but then... he had no one else to compare the results of his potion with to see if he had brewed it correctly or not.
... Oh questions? "And... no questions." For once.
"Girding potion, Professor," Ascanius replied with a certain level of ease. Yeah, that was what he had done and no he didn't have any questions. At least not about the brewing part of the class. The kid in the bubble, now that was something he was slightly curious about, yeah?
Anyway, he was good. He was a Slytherin, so this was under control. She should go and assist the other students. 'Cause he was good and attractive.
Hiss!Roar!Growl!Caw! | Hermione's Double | The Little Three | Alecate
Well, there was step one out of the way. Plus she was working with a clean cauldron and had a good fire going underneath it. She might be able to finish this after all. Nevermind that this was her first time actually brewing something, and she was doing it all by herself. She'd seen her mother do this many times, but she'd never just gone solo with it.
So, what was step two again?
Quote:
Put on your protective goggles and dragon hide gloves.
Slowly simmer the witch hazel in the cauldron, adding the crushed marigolds.
Sophie decided to do steps two and three all in one sitting, because...well, step two was just to put on her goggles and gloves. She reached for both and put them into place--one on her hands and the other on her face. She double checked that she only had one cup of the witch hazel, and then she slowly simmered it into the brew. She followed that by adding in the crushed marigolds.
After taking the stirrer out, the boy poured the Quandury blood into the cauldron. He scrunched his face as if he felt disgusted. Well, anyone in their right mind would feel disgusted knowing there was blood in something there were about to drink! Leaving the potion as it was for a while, he glanced back to the book.

DNA... Merlin! He had totally overlooked that! Where on earth was he to find someone's DNA? He for sure wouldn't use his own! Lafay was already giving him enough nerves just being herself. He wouldn't want to imagine if she was to consume the Hate Potion of him! Frankly, Angeal was absolutely nervous, but he didn't allow it to be seen by his classmates. He rummaged his bag in hope to find something in there. He pulled out a crumpled piece of paper. Oh, hey! It was the letter Eric sent yesterday... And it had blood stains on it. He probably didn't feed the bloody bird Terrant and got bitten.
With a sly grin on his face, he cut the part of the letter which had the blood stains, tracing them with the knife slowly and added them into the potion. That ought to do the work!

Caleb jumped when Hecate re-entered the room - not because he was scared of her, but it had just taken him by surprise. He saw that she was holding Ariadne, who was technically their aunt despite being only three years old, and smiled a bit to himself. He had a feeling it was a baby emergency that had made her run out of the room. He gave the little girl a wave as she sat in her little bubble, but he wasn't sure if she even saw her or recognized her, um...nephew.
When Lafay got to his table, he cleared his throat and showed her his cauldron. "Well, Professor, I'm working on the Befuddlement Draught. I'm not finished, but according to the book, it is progressing the way it should be," he explained, pointing at his blue-ish potion. "So no, I don't have any questions, except...will we have time to finish our potions?" he asked. He kind of wanted to see the end result!

Baby. There was a baby.
The potions Professor had a baby. In a bubble. There was a baby in a bubble.
This was SO weird.
Ogling at the kid, Benzi didn't notice the Professor walk up to him until she was RIGHT by his table and he jumped. "Er. I did two potions Professor and I'm done. I did the, uh," he glanced down at the two vials perched in the middle of his table, "singing suspension and the lin- linguaxus truth serum," Benzi stammered, a tad embarrassed at having forgotten what he'd made. But he was DONE. He brewed TWO potions AND cleaned up.
If it came to the worst, he would say the baby was distracting him. Which was nothing but the honest truth. There was a BABY in the potion's classroom.

A look back at her watch revealed that enough time had passed and now it was time to work on the ginger. She cut it like she was told and soon five minutes had passed and she put the ginger in the potion. She had to fight the urge to stir. She looked at her watch now and marked 20 minutes.
Then the professor came over to her, "I am making wit-sharpening potion. There seems to be more then one recipe for it in this book" Sarah said, "I chose one.. yet what are the differences between them?". Sarah's eyes happen to wonder across the room to the little girl. "If you need someone to take care of her, play with her or what ever, I would love to help. I have a nephew her age so I am used to it. I know the stories that are told, games that are played... and if you want her to go to sleep I know how to rub her back and sing her lullabies. I do have 20 minutes before the next step."

Distracted by the fact that people were actually volunteering to take care of the small child, the sixth year tried to turn her attention back on her potion. She had no idea why someone would want to babysit brats. Whether or not it was the offspring of her head of house made no different to her. She wanted no parts of that. She was sure that the child would EAT the Gryffindor for lunch, but there would be no skin off her back so whatever. If only a Hufflepuff would volunteer too... this might be a good thing after all. There was no way that she could get blamed in the child ate puffers, she thought to herself a little angrily. She was still ticked about losing points for speaking the truth of puffers.
Moving on. Her attention back on her potion, she read the next set of instructions. Purslane was the next ingredient and it was only used for nightmares. What the heck she thought... might as well add that in there too. She added a pinch and stirred five times counter clockwise. She was almost completely done.
SPOILER!!: Potion

From that point on, Sophie tried not to look at Ariadne. For one, she was a little embarrassed that her aunt had made such a scene in the classroom. Although, she did wonder what the little girl had done to make five nannies up and quit. It sounded pretty cool. Heh. Then for two, she didn't want to give the little girl anymore attention and make her act up even further.
So instead, Sophie put her all into the potion.
Quote:
With a wooden spoon give three clockwise then one counter clockwise turn. Repeat 3 times.
She picked up the wooden spoon and dipped it into the cauldron. She stirred three times in a clockwise direction and then once in a counter-clockwise direction. Then she repeated that a second and a third time. Potion brewing was turning out to be pretty easy--if Sophie could get the cauldron from exploding, that is.
Tora looked up from reading the recipe for her second potion when she noticed Professor Lafay by her desk. Of course she had noticed the disturbance when the Professor entered the room, but it hadn't really registered until she had to explain what she was doing.
Tora gestured to her completed Hair Changing Potion at the front of her desk. "I completed one potion, specifically to use in the upcoming game against Slytherin," at this she winced slightly. Perhaps it was not a good idea to remind this Slytherin professor of the upcoming game when she was in her class. Ahem. "...and I was planning on making another potion too. Originally I wanted to do the Scintillation Solution, but now I'm not so sure," she added looking up from where she sat at her desk into Lafay's face.
