| | | Defense Against the Dark Arts Lesson 1 It was chilly in the arena this time in the morning, but the fires flickering in the braziers, scattered in the corners of the room, should warm it up quick enough. Frosty looking windows with morning sunlight shining through them gave an almost enchanting glow to the place. Familiar to most students, miniature desks were placed evenly apart on the ground, though the pillow styled mats would have been a new sight to take in. In different colors, they sat right next to their partnering desks, looking quite comfortable to sit on. The professor herself was sitting, lotus style, on her own deep burgundy colored pillow-mat, with two bags of pixie crisps and phoenix crackers sitting next to her, awaiting the arrival of the students. OOC: The lesson has started. If you're just joining us, pretend as if your character has been here the whole time and jump in where we are currently at. Or risk your student losing points for being late. |

Nigel started think about all the spells that are used in a duel. Well if it is a fight to the death then of course the Killing Curse will be used. As well as the other unforgivable curses. But that one would be used the most. "If the duel is a fight to the death. Then the Killing Curse could be used"
Nigel was sure there were cooler spells that could be used during a duel. But his mind just went blank and the only thing he could think of was the killing curse.

Hmmm...more possible spells? Ella eyed the list she'd made of the ones she knew, crossing them off as they were said. What about..."Furnunculus could be used." Shudder. Boils were not fun to think about but useful in a duel? Yup.

So.. like.. if they came running at you or something.. yeah. Good thing they didn't have to explain or reason why they chose spells, wasn't it? If they did.. yeah. She was lucky they didn't.
And.. and there HAD to be more than those two. Ones that everyone hadn't already named.
This was hard. Herbology-level hard.

The Killing Curse? Mo gave the other Ravenclaw boy a wide-eyed look before returning to his own notes. Nope. No Unforgivables allowed. People went to prison for stuff like that. He picked up his quill and looked at the list for a spell that hadn't already been mentioned.
"Oh!" His hand shot up. "What about Anteoculatia? It makes antlers grow, which could make the opponent person's head get all heavy and make it hard to move out of the way of oncoming spells. Or they could get tangled in stuff."

Thinking hard, Dylan mentality went through all the spells he personally knew. Of course, he knew a good many...but ones appropriate for dueling.
Well, if one thought about it, ANY spell could be used in a duel...if used in a creative way. That was his philosophy..."Accio? Like, you could summon something and then have it knock your opponent in the head..."...

| Dani's Citrus Duck Spawn | Mama Giraffe | Lemon PATch | Pushed the Red Button "Confundus." YES. Yes. That one confused people, didn't it? "So they couldn't think of any more spells to shoot at you!" BEAM. That would work, right? And Alice knew how AWFUL it was, as she was confused more often then not. It would definitely be unsettling during a duel, too, then? Sure. Sure it would.
And.. and she couldn't think of any more. SIGH. The lioness began to copy down the spells that everyone was naming for research later. Useful knowledge, yeah?

Ten points? Ugh, without Kurumi there all of the lions had to step up their game and answer some spells to use in a duel. Except Selina did not see any answering. Huh. That was funny. Her lions were ALL going to have a chat with Mortimer about CLASS PARTICIPATION. And that was no joke. Run lion cubs, run.
Oh look, Cambridge and Biter were answering. Okay, well THEY were off the hook. But everyone else was going to wish that they had sucked it up and just answered. YEAH SHE SAID IT. RAISE YOUR HAND LIONS! POINTS AT STAKE!
Raising her hand, she said with a shrug, "Its not ideal in a school setting, but Crucio could be used. Actually, in fatal duels it is a pretty common spell." Not exactly a NICE spell, but it could be used in a duel.

These were good spells, and Mo wrote each of them carefully on his parchment. Most of them he'd heard of, whether from other classes or from his mother or from his own curiosity. That antler one, for example, he REALLY wanted to try and had spent ages learning to correctly pronounce it.
Someone was getting antlers soon. It was going to happen.
"Or what about Lentesco? The Gluing Spell? You could glue your opponent to the floor, or you could glue their wand to their hand so they can't properly grip it."

Nigel thought of another. But this one was not a nice one also. "The Blasting Curse"
Nigel continued to take notes on all the other spells that were said.

Seth had very good knowledge about this type of field. Though sometimes he had way too much knowledge.
Politely raising his hand he answered "Confringo?" Seth said hoping his fellow lions would win the ten points.
Though a part of his still felt disappointed for the house he was sorted in. Mostly because his father wasn't too pleased about it.

| Stephanoodle || Adorable Nerd Belle made a note of the famous duel she mentioned of Dumbledore vs. Grindlewald. Belle remembered hearing about that duel but that was from her family. She must have forgotten about it. She was after all very young.
Then she heard the professor ask a different question. Why would someone duel? Belle had a theory for this one. "Professor i think someone would want a duel because of revenge or the person challenge to the duel would not want to let down a challenge."
Then she heard the professor ask about naming a spell to use in a duel. Belle heard it and decided which one she would use. "Professor i would use Levicorpus to levitate the opponent and have an advantage."

Oooh! Ten points!
Peyton perked up at the mention of points. She was soooo in.
She thought of several spells, but one stuck out the most. And she wasn't happy with it because her stupid cousin was involved. He said he'd used it in a flag game of sorts. Meh. Peyton raised her hand and said, "The Gripping Charm can be used in a duel. You can use it on your hand so you won't lose grip of your wand." 'Cause your wand was the most important tool in a duel. Duh.
So if you had to tuck and roll you wouldn't lose your wand and then BAM! you're ready to strike.

ANOTHER GRYFFINDOR WAS ANSWERING. Well, it was about time. They needed these points, but as far as Seth was concerned he had just been scratched off of her reign of terror on the lazy Gryffindors. They all needed to get their priorities straight. And the most LOGICAL way to handle that was Mortimer, right?
Pushing that aside, she tried to wrack her brain for another spell that could be used in a dueling scenario, but it was a hard task because so many people were giving such amazing answers. Especially her little Biter, which was she justly proud about. Anyway, Selina had to focus if they were going to have a shot at those ten points. So she wracked her brain for a spell that could be used. Huh. What COULD she say?
And then she thought of something kind of obscure. Points for creativity? Raising her hand, she said, "You could use engorgio on someone's tongue so that way they can't talk and it renders them speechless? Then it gives you the chance to do a more straightforward attack with a defenseless opponent." Random? Yes. Invalid? Never.

Having heard his answer, he raised his hand once again. "Mimble-Wimble. The tongue tying curse. It's used to prevent the opponent from speaking."Seth answered.
Hmm Peyton? That's impressive, she knew dueling spells.
Oh how he imagined using that curse on some of his family members. But couldn't.

What else what else what else? Mo doodled along the margin of his parchment as his classmates shared more spells that were good for dueling. He drew a wand with sparks flying from the tip, the sparks curling around the top of the page and down to the other margin.
"Glacies Transeo? The Frostbite Hex will temporarily freeze an arm or leg of the other person to keep them from casting or blocking other spells. But it's pretty dangerous," his brow pulled down at that. It didn't seem right to do dangerous spells for fun.

Oh wait, hang on. Had no one said this one yet? That was weird. This was a spell that Selina would have totally have used if she were in a duel situation. Actually, that wasn't true. If she were in a real duel setting she would have just pulled out Mortimer and used him. She didn't need a wand when she had a TERRIFYING bat. Whose name... was Mortimer. N'aww she loved him so much. What a cutiepie.
Raising her hand again, she offered up her THIRD spell of the class. She was on a roll, seriously. But she had effectively run out of good ideas. So this one would have to do. Yes, it would. It was a GREAT spell though. Always fun to use on pie. Pie was delicious. "Professor?" she said trying hard not to be rude, "You could always just use Flipendo. It would knock the person backward... sort of. Yeah." And with that she had effectively tired out all of her obscure thoughts. Everyone else had already said the practical ones.

| Baguette | there is no D in my name | TRAITORclaw | Queenie of Narnia After taking her seat on one of the mats - since she apparently couldn't sit on the professor who was clearly trying to be one of them - Penelope sort of froze up for a few seconds when the topic of the lesson was revealed. Dueling. A lot of thoughts rushed to her head at once, but she pushed them away as quickly as possible. This was a good topic, she told herself. It would be helpful...for a lot of reasons.
So after taking a deep breath to help herself focus, she pulled out a notebook and a pencil - those quills and ink got frustrating to take notes with after awhile - and focused mainly on taking notes on the questions and answers and things written on the board instead of really providing any answers herself. She needed all the help and information she could get, and she couldn't both take down information and spout it out at the same time. Plus, if she stopped, she'd have to actually process all the information she was hearing and writing down, and some of the stuff she was hearing would probably freak her out more. So she didn't stop while she could help it, and her writing hand was pretty cramped up as the lesson started winding down.
Penelope set her writing utensil down and tried to stretch her hand as she listened to the next question. List spells that would be useful in a duel? This would be a good time to stop her note-taking and actually answer something. Her hand was soon in the air. "You could use the Jelly-Legs Jinx."

Okay, so they were on a race to see which house could list the most spells that can be used in a duel? Cool, a competition. Sierra thrived on competing against others. No, scratch that. It was nice to compete, but what she really thrived on was winning. There was only first place, no other winning positions. After that, it was just 'first place loser' or something like that.
Raising her hand, she said, "What about ears to kumquats?" she suggested. "The spell causes the victim's ears to turn into kumquats, which would interfere with their hearing." Because...who could hear with a pair of kumquats? "Then you could cast on them, and they might not even see it coming."

Well, there are so many of them that could use in duelling and most of them had been mentioned by students here. The blonde guy just kept silent and thinking what else that they hadn't mention yet.
"Don't forget about Shield charm, Professor." Yeah, Protego. Since that was the only charm that used as the defense, right?

There were mentions of good spells. And one of the ones Peyton liked was mention. Oh snapper-doodles!
Peyton twirled a strand of red hair in her finger while trying to think of another spell. Soon, her hand was up in the air faster than you could you say bludger. "Glisseo Charm can come in useful. You can freeze the ground your opponent is standing on," and BAM! down they go. Heheee.

Well, well, this was getting interesting.
Seth smirked as he remembered a spell, one of his family members were very fond of. "Obscuro. This spell causes a blindfold on the opponent, preventing him or her from seeing anything in their surroundings." Seth answered after he had rasied his hand for a third time.
What a better way to defeat your opponent, by literally scaring the lights out of him/her.
Oh this young Lion, had learned so much. Can too much be bad? Nope, it can't.

Sierra peered up at the board and quickly read the spells that had already been suggested. Trying to hurry, she quickly raised her hand again...and then jerked it back down when she saw her suggestion under the Gryffindor section. BAHHH. She reread the list again and finally came up with something new. "What about the Momentum-reversing spell?" she suggested, raising her hand. "This way you can stop your opponent and force them back."

| Funny Beauty This lesson is certainly getting rather interesting, especially with the current question at hand, 'Why would someone observe a duel, that's obvious, bu naming off new spells can definitely help to be a better dueler. Oichi raised her hand and responded, "I believe protego is a pretty awesome spell that can protect a dueler from amy spell that is thrown at them besides a certain unforgiveable".
