It was chilly in the arena this time in the morning, but the fires flickering in the braziers, scattered in the corners of the room, should warm it up quick enough. Frosty looking windows with morning sunlight shining through them gave an almost enchanting glow to the place. Familiar to most students, miniature desks were placed evenly apart on the ground, though the pillow styled mats would have been a new sight to take in. In different colors, they sat right next to their partnering desks, looking quite comfortable to sit on. The professor herself was sitting, lotus style, on her own deep burgundy colored pillow-mat, with two bags of pixie crisps and phoenix crackers sitting next to her, awaiting the arrival of the students.
OOC: The lesson has started. If you're just joining us, pretend as if your character has been here the whole time and jump in where we are currently at. Or risk your student losing points for being late.
Sarah knew loads of spells, she just hoped that she was not going to repeat any spells hat others had said. She raised her hand, "how about the Toenail-growing hex, it makes a person's toe nails grow very fast which is very uncomfortable. Once the victim has that it will be hard to wear shoes and stand." Too long toe nails in shoes were really sore, it hurt.

It would ruin sitting, which is among my favorite activities."

The professor nodded. "Yes, there have been duels such as those in the past. Not entirely common, since one would like a good range of spells to duel with, but not unseen either. Good question, Mister Montmorency."

Sarah looked worriedly at the Sltherin side of the board... they were out of control as were the claws... and the puffs.. man where were the lions? She raised her hand, "there is the Melofors spell, when a person says Melofors there is an orange light and whammm there is a big pumpkin around the victims head. That will be hard to see past and very uncomfortable too!" said Sarah. She wondered if the pumpkin could be used to make pumkin soup later, yet how to get it off the victims head?
Alex giggles as he sees how much spells his housemates have listed. Although, the giggle is very brief before he starts jotting down some spells those sound easy for him to try and after he finishes, he raises his hand, glancing his surrounding, looking tense. "I heard that there's a spell to read minds of other people..." he pauses, swallowing his own saliva. "D- Do they use it in duels as well, professor..?"
Belle looked at the board and wanted to try and get the hufflepuff side some help. Belle thought of a spell. "Professor i would use Stupefy as a simple spell to use against an opponent."

Daichi looked at the blackboard and read which spells had been named"There is a spell that causes the opponent to vomit slimey slugs, though i do not know what the incantation is, Professor" the Slytherin answered again after raising his hand in the air.
So....cool spells were out of the question, basically? Ones with blood and gore and COOLNESS? How BORING. If they were REALLY dueling, they'd get to use them, so they should be taught. Aidan nodded to himself.
Then thought of a tamer spell, "What about that one that makes things burn you? Could you hit their wand with that so it burns when they hold it?" Yeah? No? Yeah?
Laura looked at the Professor and smiled. "There is the Oppugno spell." Laura was really sure that was a spell and she was hoping that the Professor would allow her to have this spell, she could use all three of the spells she had said which would be awesome.

Elise beamed. This was a really cool lesson, seriously. Since the obvious spells had been mentioned already, Elise racked her brain a bit to find a spell that hadn't been mentioned. She doubted that Confundus would do anything, nope.
Aidan's question... Elise knew that charm. It was the Flag-something. Ah, right. Turning towards the younger Ravenclaw, she smiled. "You mean Flagrante?" Because he could cast that on the opponent's wand and it'd have the effect he was looking for.
Raising her hand for her own answer, Elise smiled. "How about the Tripping Jinx?" Because she could hold her opponent off that way or something. BEAM.

She should have known that this was going to be a class where she was going to be more listening and taking notes than anything else. First the topic had started with dueling which had only been briefly touched upon by her grandfather figuring she'd learn soon enough once she was in Hogwarts. So she had stayed quiet. And then Professor Romanos asked the class about the spells one might be used in a duel and there was an explosion of various spells and incantations that went way over her head.
Ellura just stood there wide-eyed in wonder. Her hand steadily gripping her quill as she tried to write down as much as she could from hearing...the task made easier when they appeared on the board for all to see. She could only hope that perhaps a fraction of the spells mentioned might be ones taught to them within the next 5 years of her education.
Rachel stared all her classmates saying all the spells anyone could use in a duel and felt completely lost. She knew about most of them, but realized that if she was in a duel right now, she would not be able to do most of them.
Still in shock, the girl raised her hand.
- Hm... there's also Diffindo. - said the girl - It "cuts" objects and I think it could be really usefull in a duel... - it could... right?

"I assume you're talking about Legilimency, Mister Moon." Medea suggested, looking towards the young Slytherin. "And...no, not often is it used in duels, if ever. The act of performing Legilimency is difficult itself and requires accurate concentration which may or may not even give you a glimpse of what your opponent's next move could be."

Oh, yes, one of the more...unnatural spells in her opinion. "Are you sure, Mister Katharos?" she asked. "Or perhaps...the name given for this spell?" She knew which he was talking, but, she wanted to know if he knew. The Slytherins could spare a spell or two anyhow judging by their growing list.

Just about to ask if the young Ravenclaw knew of the name of the spell, despite the lack of incantation said, another spoke up, giving just that. "Yes, Flagrante is one that has been used." She nodded to both students, glancing towards the chalkboard to see it being quickly written underneath the Ravenclaw section.

Speaking of the board, the number of spells posted had her glancing to her watch. Oh dear, the class was to end about a minute ago. Medea chuckled. "Alright everyone, it seems...we've gone a little over the time limit here." she tapped the glass on her watch before glancing to the class. "Time flies by when you're having fun. Well done Slytherins! Your effort has earned your house 10 points. Gryffindors, Hufflepuffs, and Ravenclaws...5 points to your houses for your excellent endeavor as well."
"Class is over, but, keep these spells in mind, especially for next lesson. Feel free to stay behind and continue copying them down if you need to. You may go around to the other side of the chalkboard if you still need to copy down that information from before, but...if you don't have any questions... you may go. Have a nice day, everyone. Homework will be posted later on the noticeboard." And whoever had the bags of pixie crisps and phoenix crackers, please take them!
Medea herself, well, she was waiting to see if Professor Drools A Lot was going to move.

Ella was copying down spells like a crazy person, knowing these would come in handy at some time or another. She was the tiniest bit disappointed at how many the Slytherin students were calling out but really, they probably dueled more than Hufflepuffs, right? Seemed legit.
The blonde blinked when Professor Romanos then announced that class had ended. SIGH. Already? At least she said they'd need the spells for next lesson...Ella smiled hopefully because maybe they'd get to try some of them out? That would be brilliant!
Finishing up the last of her notes, the fifteen year old badger packed up her things and headed for the door. "Thanks for the lesson and the crisps, Professor. See you next time." BEAM.

Alyssa was glad that even though their house hadn't been able to earn the maximum 10 points in the spell naming game, they still were able to earn 5 points. '5 is better than nothing.'
Then she heard the words, class is over which made her sad. But she knew that there would be other DADA classes in the term, so she had that to look forward to. Packing up her journal and textbook into her backpack, she slung it over her shoulder, stood up and made her way to Professor Romanos.
"Thanks again for another interesting lesson. I'm definitely looking forward to your next one." she told her DADA Professor with a smile, before listening to whisper discreetly in her ear.
"Uh Professor, is our Astronomy Professor alright? He seems to be trying to get your attention, lying on the floor like that. Maybe he has a crush on you." Alyssa whispered with a grin.

The silver haired man was observing, as was his task, and part of that highly developed skillset was to make sure one doesnt attract attention to oneself lest the subject matter be... distracted and start behaving differently from how they usually do. The benefit perhaps of one of his pallor was that he could almost blend into the walls.
As he moved quietly around his gaze would shift from student to student, to the Professor conducting the discussion, to the one still on the floor... everything-- and finally rests his eyes on the board. That is some list they were amassing, and had started to wonder...
Ah but now class has ended. He pushed himself off the wall and neared the brunette "Professor Romanos? I'm Corin Vanderbilt..." he said finally being able to introduce himself as the students ebbed out of the room. "Interesting class discussion you have here...." he said as he looked around, and once again found himself looking at the suited man on the floor. "Was there any particular reason why he's there?" he asked curiously

Seth, was NOT happy with the results. It was clear and fair who the winners were, therefore making him angry that the Lions didn't step up their game.
Furrowing his eyebrows he left the classroom as angry as you can possibly imagine. His competitive side was showing, but he could really care less right now. No wonder his father wasn't pleased young Aguirre was sorted in the Lion's Cage.
5 points? Nope he wanted all 10!
He left, with the disappointment. Now off to his cave being the library, in order to cool off. He must NOT be disturbed, at the moment.

Now that class was ended, she could slip back into her normal speaking voice and didn't have to concentrate on making sure everyone could understand her. Until the board candidate came up and introduced himself. Alas, a few moments longer of focusing on voice. "A pleasure to meet you, Mister Vanderbilt." she greeted with as much warm and welcoming tone as she did with her students when they entered her lessons.
"Not that I know of, no. You'll haff to ask him." She smiled guiltily, glancing down to Airey. Shrugging up her shoulders a little, Medea knelt down to the astronomy professor, wand in hand, glancing up to Corin momentarily. "I do hope I didn't bore you too much during the lesson." Theoreticals weren't all that exciting, but they had to be done every once in awhile.
And, with a not so subtle manner, Medea poked Airey's side with her wand. Just a little-

"Alright, it's about time for us to start." she spoke up, waiting for the talking students to hush down. "I hope you all had a good summer. Today will be more theoretical based than practical to wake up those sleepy minds of yours." Ahem, they fall asleep on these pillows, they were going to have a cold wake up call. "We'll be covering a topic that we have gotten to in the past with spell practice, but never really talked about." Pausing for a moment, she sighed as her gaze unwillingly landed on the Astronomy Professor.
"We do have a guest with us today. You may recognize him as your Astronomy professor; Professor Flamsteed. He's...erm..." Just WHAT was he doing!? She bit the inside of her cheek, trying to figure that out. Invading her lesson, that's what he was doing. With a flick of her wand, a chalk board in the corner of the arena rolled it's way to the front of the class and stopped behind her. The chalk on the board floated up, beginning to write seven letters:
DUELING
"Can anyone tell me the definition of this word?" Just ignore Professor Flamsteed for the time being.
The second year was seated on one of the cushiony floor mats, eyeing the Astronomy Professor that was lying face down on the floor when Professor Romanos began class. It was a little chilly in the room, but she thought that might be because they were going to do something that made them warm in a little bit. Fire spells maybe? That would be exciting! On the other hand though, dangerous. Speaking of dangerous, Professor Romanos informed them they would be talking about dueling. Dueling?! Real, honest to goodness dueling? Am I ready for that? she wondered, not sure whether she was more excited or anxious about the idea.
She raised her hand and gave a short and sweet answer to the question. "Dueling is the agreement between two people to have a physical challenge against each other, usually using the same choice of weapon and rules. They usually happen to solve arguments, at least they used to a long time ago, but now we can use them to practice spells and not really be fighting. Hopefully..."

The piece of chalk writing on the board finally settled down from scribbling furiously, pausing in mid-air, waiting. Medea paused for a minute, letting those who were taking notes to do so and let others have a moment for the information to sink in. Moving the two bags of pixie crisps and phoenix crackers in front of her, she opened each and scooted them over Professor Flamsteed to two students who sat in the front. "Feel free to take some and pass them around please."
There was another moment of silence before Medea continued. "Lets focus on duels in general for a moment. Does anyone know of any notable duels that happened in our history?"
Eliza made mental notes of a lot of the information, since it seemed pretty intuitive, but the rest she marked down. She dipped her hand into the passing bags of snacks and munched on them lazily while she thought about Professor Romano's next question. She could think of one duel a long time ago with Headmaster Dumbledore, but she was sure everyone would say that so she tried to think of another. Oh, there's the one between Molly Weasley and Bellatrix Lestrange... She tried to get the words out before someone else could, but she was too slow.
She couldn't seem to think of another wizard duel, but for some reason a different one came to mind. "Professor, I know it's an old story, but in Beauty and the Beast, the beast sort of dueling Geston for the love of Belle...so that sort of answers both questions. But Geston didn't really love Belle, not truly. But I guess that's besides the point anyway." She got shy about her answer, though she didn't really know why. Something about speaking of love and things in front of people. Funny though, it had never really mattered to her before. Maybe turning twelve was starting to make more and more things matter. She wasn't sure.

Which wasn't all that surprising. "Travel two countries away though and you'll have a completely different variety of answers."
"With why duels happen set aside, has anyone ever seen someone intently observing or studying a duel? Or done so themselves? If so, or even if not, what would be a person's reasons for doing this?"
Eliza really didn't think she had ever seen someone purposely watching duels or anything, other than in classrooms she supposed, but she could find reasons why they might do so. "Professor, a reason why someone might watch a duel would be to get a good insight on a potential opponent. Seeing how they fight would help a person prepare a strategy against someone." That was a really good reason in her opinion. Though she didn't wish harm on anyone, if you felt someone might want to duel you sometime, it was only in your best interest to know everything about them right?

"Yes, I'm sure some people watch duels for support or if money is at stake..." The professor chuckled. "Making sure the duelers follow the rules or for support, indeed, but there is also much to learn from the duel itself. Tips, techniques, and strategies. Studying a person's dueling style to take note on what worked and what didn't, such as which spells worked or even footing placement and stances. I'm not suggesting to try and copy someone's fighting style precisely down to the flick of a wrist because they're great, but, it is worth to take a moment to sit back and observe, if only to greater your own style." Medea paused for a moment. "Which, we'll be getting into next lesson."
Glancing down to the Astronomy professor, her eyebrow raised and nudged him with her clean boot before standing up. Still breathing right? Was...was he drooling? On her floor! Hmph. "For now though..." Medea turned the chalkboard around to the clean side. The students had enough time to finish copying down what was written, though it wasn't erased in case it were still needed. "I spoke of 'spells that worked'."
"Who can name a spell one could use in a duel? Ten points to the house that list the most."
Eliza's eyes widened as a flurry of answers rang into the air. Quick, think! she thought to herself hurriedly. She sprang her hand in the air, eager to earn points for her house and added to the clamor, "The hair growing charm! You could grow their hair so long that they would trip over it!"

Eliza was glad the Ravenclaws had done so well, but she did wish they had won. Maybe next time. She packed her things and got a little closer to the board so that she could be sure to copy all of the spells down for studying later.
"Thank you for the lesson Professor Romanos! The race for points was fun!" She smiled and filed out of the room with the other students, and gave one last look back at the Astronomy Professor on the floor. Strange, she thought once more.

Yeahhh Slytherin were the BEST. Too bad she was nice enough to give the other houses points for being lame, even if it was funny that Ravenclaw got the same points as Hufflepuff and Gryffindor. Sometimes coasting through apparently WAS a good option.
... .and West DID have questions of course, but he waited while Romanos.... whatevered with the Astro professor.
Oh and:
"Sir you have crumbs on you." On his SUIT. Look, some were sort of STICKING even. Helpful!West.

Dylan beamed as it was announced they'd won the points. YES! FIST PUMPING! Slytherins had banded together and whatnot. It was a rather proud moment for the Snake Captain...
...and then class was being dismissed.
Packing up his stuff, he made sure he had the spells list copied...When everything was in order, he slipped that, too, into his bag.
Spying another adult joining them in the room, the Slytherin rolled his eyes. Ugh...Creeps. The lot of them. What did they care what they were learning and not learning? As far as Dylan was concerned, Professor Romanoes was one of the best at the school.
Snort.
"Have a nice day, Professor." With a last look, he was out the door.

Alex continues to write down more spells as the students empty the class, but when he realises that only a few of them left, he starts to panic. He jolts when he hears Professor Sleepy's shriek. What did Professor Romanos do to him? O___o
The Snake recklessly shoves everything on his desk into his bag before he heads for the door, tripping over the desks and chairs a few times. "Goo- Goodbye, Professor Romanos, Professor... Sleepy-" says he and quickly leaves the classroom.

10 points for Slytherin. Awesome! Even he didn't help... much, but he was glad that Slytherin had the spirit to gain more points and points and it affected to himself. Such a very awesome teamwork, wasn't it?
Then he realized that class was already over. Honestly the Head Boy hoped that today they also practiced the duel instead of the basic theory. Well, practice makes perfect, right? But maybe they would get the practical thing at the next lesson. Made sure that he did remember all of the spells that had been written on the board, Gary packed his stuffs and walked out to the class.
"Thanks for today, Professor. Looking forward for the next lesson." He said. Still wondered how could Flamsteed trapped in this class. Meh, weird man.

Slytherin got the ten points. Oh well, at least they were given five points for consolation. Yes, she was satisfied with that now even though she had so badly wanted for their house to excel. Just as Louisa had said, no point in crying over spilled milk. And the former Head Girl was right.
While most of her classmates exited, Beezus stayed a while and hastily copied down the list of spells on the board. She'd have to visit the library later and research about the ones she wasn't familiar with. Scribble. Scribble. Scribble. As she did this, she heard their visitor talking with the woman Professor. She was almost finished when the lying Astronomy Professor let out what seemed like a squeal.

Looking up from her notebook, she stared at the adults curiously. "Er, Professors...is everything okay? ...Can I be of any help?" They seemed to have something going on. *mellow*
...haha. Aspen pulled her hood up from her cloak, but the smile on her face for that so called "Captain" just couldn't be concealed. Next class, she was going to slay him.
And, dumb as he was, he (and everyone else in this class) had provided her with a list of exactly what spells she could expect in dueling. She sure didn't offer any spells she knew. Aspen DID stay after class to copy down the list though. Good info to know. Very educational class.
