It was chilly in the arena this time in the morning, but the fires flickering in the braziers, scattered in the corners of the room, should warm it up quick enough. Frosty looking windows with morning sunlight shining through them gave an almost enchanting glow to the place. Familiar to most students, miniature desks were placed evenly apart on the ground, though the pillow styled mats would have been a new sight to take in. In different colors, they sat right next to their partnering desks, looking quite comfortable to sit on. The professor herself was sitting, lotus style, on her own deep burgundy colored pillow-mat, with two bags of pixie crisps and phoenix crackers sitting next to her, awaiting the arrival of the students.

Wait, wait, wait...Were they going to be able to DUEL this year? Dylan eyed his peers. A lot of people were asking...
THAT would be AWESOME...Sweet Merlin...
He eyed Aspen Odessa eyeing him.
Yes, ma'am...It. Would. Be. ON, Ravenclaw.
As to answer her question, though...the Slytherin shrugged. People had already said the good ones...Hmph. "I know the opponents are supposed to bow to each other." Glares for Aspen.
Was THAT a question, Odessa?!
Aspen grinned all the more.
And to ... keep up with the lesson, and code, Aspen bowed to Dylan. Since opponents were supposed to, according to him.
Bring it, Slytherin.
After Belle was dazing a little bit in the classroom, she heard the second question the professor asked. Hmm...code duello....that seemed like an interesting term. But wait! Belle knew that term.
Belle heard her other classmate's answers. Then she raised her hand and said, "Professor, Code Duello is when you arrange a time and place to battle if you want a proper duel. An improper duel is when a wizard can use unforgivable curses like in the triwizard tournament of 1994/1995 against another wizard." Belle remember hearing about the famous duel of Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort.

Nerida thought for a moment.. It sounded famillar Code Duello...A code for dueling. After hearing some of her classmates answers she remembered what it was and added her own into the answers "Code Duello regulates dueling and thus help prevent vendettas between social factions."

WHY was she looking at him like that?
Seeing the bow, Dylan returned it, offering a rather nasty look.
As soon as it was go time...
You and me, Odessa.

Why did HE have to sit next to HER? And why was she on the ground? Peyton just realized she wasn't sitting on a chair at a desk. See what the dude on the ground did. SIGH. Well, she was sure there was a perfectly good explanation for this.
Anyway. Seth. Why was he still alive? "And I spy with my pretty green-gray eyes an idiot," she shot back, rolling her eyes at him. "For your information, I've attended all my classes on freewill." So. THERE.
Pffffft, Seth, pffffffft!
Seth silently chuckled. He found it amusing, how easily Peyton can be set off. Of course he didn't mean it in a bad way, he was actually happy to see his only friend here. People only know Seth on the surface, but if he would allow people to know him deeply. They would find out what really went on, in the Mad Hatter's mind.
.......
Keeping focus on the lesson, all these dueling questions were really getting him excited! Anything that would teach him how to defend himself and inflict major pain, he was all for it.
Whilst listening to the students answers he was making mental notes. However there was one student in the class, that was truly just annoying him. Just the sole sound of the voice, belonging to that person.
kill. Seth thought to himself and remembering that one family member that's caused him so much grief, in his young life. Yup he definitely wanted to learn how to do that, while dueling...perhaps.
The rules of dueling? Well, she supposed that anything really went in dueling because it was a duel. Of course, you had to do the bowing thing at the beginning, but beyond that it was a duel. The point was to DISARM and HURT your opponent... no? Well, at least she thought so. Eh, maybe she misunderstood the point of the whole dueling thing. Although, she was pretty sure that she didn't.
Raising her hand, she said, "I suppose in a school setting one rule would be a Tate classic- don't die." Although, she supposed that the don't die thing was IN GENERAL a good rule. Right? No one else thought so? Okay then.
Peyton bit her quill in concentration, scanning her brain for any useful information. She...didn't pay attention much when it came to dueling. She usually liked it when people skipped it to the Zap! Zap! and the Bam! Bam!
She was jotting down notes, though. Even if she hated staying quiet, Peyton did. Wait. She did know one, which was bowing but someone already said it. Next time she'd raise her hand faster than anyone else and beat them to the answer. Yep. That was the plan.
Noticing others scribbling notes Antoinette just listened to the Professor and others talking. She figured she might as well write out some notes after class to make sure she had some reference in case someone else needed it. Or in case she wanted to go over it just in case but she highly doubted it would ever really come to that. This topic however did interest her.
She'd never really heard of dueling with wands, the first thing coming to mind was some sort of old fashioned duel from the cowboy movies but... it seemed interesting enough. Still she found herself stumped on the possible rules or limitations so she just sat quietly listening, absently picking up her quill and twirling it between her fingers as she bit her lip in thought. Next time she'd have to look through the book before class.

Code Duello. Those were the set of rules to be followed during a duel. Were they discussing on that stuff because they REALLY were going to duel duel duel today, as in practically, just as Professor Romanos had said earlier? Can they just skip that part and get to practice already?
Oh, there was a question. Choosing not to speak up, the brunette kept her hand down and listened to her classmate's answers. They pretty much gave all the possible ones. She, on the other hand maintained a thinking that the first rule must be to respect and honor ALL the rules. And whoever fails in following the conditions must be sent to Azkaban forfeited from the duel or something. Yeah. That should be it.
Hmm.
Hmmm...
The love birds from Divination were on it again, she could see. Of course, she was eyeing the two from the corner of her eyes. They were rather obvious. Unfortunate for them, Beezus wasn't going to let the older Odessa lose any more points if she had plans again. No, thank you. Nope.

West was exactly the kind of kid who knew about Code Duellos. He was in fact, the kind of kid who had one up on his bedroom wall. THAT MADE ONE ANSWER ONLY really hard.
He decided to PATIENTLY listen to what others had to say and fill the gaps in. There would surely be gaps on account of -West was pretty sure- not everyone knew as much about obscure things as he did.
It was REALLY HARD THOUGH to not immediately come up with an answer that was awesome, even with all the awesome answers in his head. Finally he DID put his hand up.
"The number of paces what they take is agreed upon before the duel starts and covered in the Code Duello. Usually if the insult what started it all is more serious and stuff, there are less paces taken."
So they were getting to discuss limits and completion points and exciting things like that? MAYBE SOME FAMOUS DUELS TOO. Excellent. And no Yoga? Also excellent.

The snake was listening attentively to what was being said. First, because her knowledge in that field was poor and second because she had become interested in this. She wanted to know how to stand out to annoying people without the need of help. And this sounded like the perfect chance to do so. Whether Professor Romanos had meant to help or not. Because according to Cassia's own categorizing, annoying and disrespectful people were listed in the dark people category. Mhhm..
So the thirteen years old leaned forwards paying attention and even retrieved a quill and a parchment from her bag to scribble down important information. Yup if she cared about something she'd make extra effort. Though she had to admit that the pillows were very appealing to lay on. But no she was concentrating now.
But Cassia was hoping she could get to see this in action. Just to watch and learn and write some useful info down. This dueling and Code Duello seemed cool. And useful....Just in case.

Code Duello. Kat has heard of that. Read of that. Whatever verb best fits. Oh nevermind, at least Kat KNEW about it. Not all, though, but enough for her to be able to answer questions in class.
Before she could even raise her hand, one student spoke. And then another one. AND THEN ANOTHER ONE. Kat just blinked at how fast they answered and sooner, all HER possible answers were already taken by students. HMPH. Kat kinda crossed her hands cos she NEVER experienced this before. It made her feel dumb.
.... WELL anything else you want to add, peeps?

Nigel did not know anything about this Duello thing. All he knew was duel was between two people. But he did wonder if there were illegal duels and he did have a question.
"Professor, What happens if you are killed in a duel?"
Even if this duello thing was to prevent death. Nigel bet it did not work as well as it should.

Elise missed the first question on purpose, since everyone was pretty much giving the same answers and Elise would much rather be scribbling notes. And scribble notes she did. Her whole scrap of paper was full of the definitions of the word duel and she had to flip it over to continue with the next question.
What other rules were involved in Code Duello?
Well, Elise wasn't exactly a specialist at this, but she did know that a duel essentially meant a fight to an extent agreed to prior to the duel. Raising her hand, Elise voiced her answer. "In Code Duello, the two duelists have to duel. Because of some Ancient Magic or something?"
Well, for now, Elise would just doodle in coloured ink on her parchment.
Sarah had been lying against the ppillow her hands cupped behind her head, when she relunctantly removed one hand and put it in the air. "one is the limit of no physical contact, just spell contact. Sometimes those who might have thick figures yet equally think brains might find it easier to duel someone else with their hands or weight, yet that is cheating a wizards duel" Sarah for one was much more powerful by wand then by physical contact. As it was she weighed nothing plus she developed her brains instead of her body muscles. Sarah replaced her hand to behind her head.
He had had read about that but before he could even raised his hand, his classmates already said what he's about to say. There's no need for him to repeat that. So the fourth year decided to write some of his classmate's answers in his notebook. It might be useful for him in the future. Who knows, right?

Code Duello?
Well... Theo had never heard of that in his life, so he just kept quiet for this question, because he was that clueless, that even guessing would be a waste of time.
But actually he really SHOULD know this stuff. Duelling stuff was cool to know.

Ira blinked up and a smile played on her lips as soon as the word duel was mentioned. When had she seriously dueled? Like, really dueled with the rules and all? A few eons ago it seemed to her! Though she had done last term.
Still the first DADA class of the term, and they were probably going to duel. And no yoga was kinda like with a cherry on top. Exciting!
But while her mind was swirling with all the excitement, the answers about Code Duello had already been given by so many of others! And it seemed to cover everything. Nothing to add.. Chewing on her bottom lip softly, she just waited for the lesson to proceed.

Types of Duel
1. A fight breaks out where there are no rules
2. A duel is agreed upon abiding by specific rules and limitation agreed by both parties.
Code Duello: establishes the type of combat
Then she put down her quill and thought of the possible rules and limits that would be included in the code. Once she had a possible rule, she raised her hand.
"Professor no one else should be involved in the duel especially if it is between just two people. This prevents either party from being 'ambushed' by someone else."
"Involved directly, no. That would be dishonorable to have an ambush set. On the other hand, outside the duel itself, there usually are bound to be witnesses, not to mention the assurance of a healer. Though this is not always the case." Unfortunately. "We'll get to more of this in a moment."

Oh? Other rules and terms of the Code Duello? The blonde couldn't be sure but she figured what she was about to say was legit. "Professor, if someone fails to show up to a duel then the other person would be the winner and erm...well the one who failed to show would kind of be an outcast, yeah? Looked down on and stuff?" Ells wasn't sure this counted but she figured she'd give it a go.

Not quite what she was looking for when it came to Code Duello, but it was a good observation to take into mind. "Unfortunately...yes. Nowadays, the idea of failing to show to a duel that was challenged is a little more relaxed than that of the older days. One would have been labeled as a coward, as Mister Stonevall mentioned, and it'd have been quite hard to come back from that title." Still was nowadays.
"There were times often when both duelists were kept in separate guarded rooms so they could not sneak off into the night or one could not harm their opponent before the duel to give them the advantage."

Laura wasn't sure she would like that. "Also Professor if a girl was cheating in the duel because they were losing would they get into trouble?" Laura was enjoying this lesson.
"No, Miss Hyde. That would just be someone trying to get another into trouble." Had this...happened? Or planned to happen? Medea contemplated what Laura was asking for a moment before speaking. "That would depend on a variety of factors; where the duel was taken place, who witnessed the cheating, and who the victim was. Naturally though, cheating is frowned upon. There will bound to be consequences from it, however light or severe they are."

Medea nodded. "A second is indeed wise to bring. Not only are they there to step into your place if you cannot continue the duel for whatever reason, death not being the only one, but they can be used as messengers of the like. Try and resolve the matter between the two parties before the duel actually begins. You don't see much of that nowadays though." It was all about the fighting.

This was just one of those things she ended up being wrong about, wasn't it? SIGH. Well all her life she'd gone thinking anything goes when in a duel--the Professor even mentioned that people could possibly die so she would stick to that way of thinking.
However, for the sake of answering the question..."I think certain spells are banned from duels, right Professor? Like you wouldn't be able to use any of those three curses. I'm pretty sure you'd go to Azkaban for those but I don't know what punishment you'd get from the duel officiator themself..."
Did people even try using those in duels?
"Will we get a chance to duel at all this year?"
The professor smiled and nodded. "Generally yes, due to the consequences of using the unforgivables, the duelists agree that they are not to be used...as well as any others they agree upon beforehand, unless, and only unless, the very rare case in which they are allowed. Very rarely, Miss Cambridge, has that ever happened. They are far too dangerous and far too unfair to work with."

He raised his hand. "There are formalities and traditions that take place as part of the duel, like bowing and taking paces. I guess the bowing might be about showing respect to each other, or a mutual acknowledgement that you're following the rules, because if anyone decided not to follow the rules... that would be really dangerous. And the pacing is to get far enough apart for proper spell casting." Or, you know... something like that.

Oh yes, she was hoping this was brought up. "Bowing and how many paces you take are just a small part of the duel but still are as important as the duel itself. "Precisely, yes. Only may one use magical means to fight an opponent, though this doesn't necessarily mean just wands may be used. Duels can include a variety of other magical means, if decided upon beforehand."
As the students spoke, a list was being formed on the chalkboard, writing down their answers in the appropriate spot. Medea waited for a moment before adding a few of her own. "I think you all have done a pretty good job on the rules that Code Duello provides. Some more limits though include the length of time a duel may run for, the use of other weaponry, a specific list of spells, the number of casts a duelist may use whether that be in general or for specific spells, the allowance of replacement wands if necessary, the use of one's surroundings, and it can even go as far as what clothing one can wear."

General Rules:
- Each duelist may bring a second to take his/her place in the duel if necessary [unless decided otherwise].
- Each duelist may bring a witness(es) to ensure fair play in accordance with the agreed upon limits.
- Each duelist may bring a healer in case of injury.
- Each duelist will bow to one another and take five paces in opposite directions [unless decided otherwise].

The piece of chalk writing on the board finally settled down from scribbling furiously, pausing in mid-air, waiting. Medea paused for a minute, letting those who were taking notes to do so and let others have a moment for the information to sink in. Moving the two bags of pixie crisps and phoenix crackers in front of her, she opened each and scooted them over Professor Flamsteed to two students who sat in the front. "Feel free to take some and pass them around please."
There was another moment of silence before Medea continued. "Lets focus on duels in general for a moment. Does anyone know of any notable duels that happened in our history?"
Sarah knew a lot of duels, so she quickly raised her hand, "the most famous duel there ever was was probably the one between Albus Dumbedore, and Gellert Grindelwald, after which upon defeat the latter ended up in jail. Yet even before that there was dueling, All-England Wizarding Duelling Competition for example took place in 1430, where Alberta Toothill used a Blasting Curse and won. Then there was the iots at the 1994 world cup, Hogwarts itself has witnessed many duels, not only through the dueling club, there was the battle for Hogwarts in 1998, the battle for the astronomy tower. There were a lot of duels involving Harry Potter between the years 1995 and 1998, mainly against Voldemort and his Death Eaters". She then quickly glanced over at the boards, commiting the notes to memory. She hoped she never had to use a killing curse or one of the 3 unforgivable ones in her life.
Ah yes. Seth remembered one, he wasn't sure it'd be correct but still went ahead and politely raised his hand "Harry Potter vs. Voldemort during the Battle at Hogwarts?" he answered, as it was the first time he's spoken out on since class started.
He forehead wrinkled as he was thinking real hard, second guessing the answer he's just given the Professor.
Nervous? Maybe? For some reason the Professor made him nervous?

Sierra took notes as she tried to follow along with the discussion. Did they really have to discuss dueling? Couldn't they just get up, aim at one another, and play a good ole fashioned game of 'Survival of the Fittest'? Heh. Notable duels in history, though? That one was easy. She raised her hand. "There's the duel that happened between Egbert the Egregious and Emeric the Evil," she said. "I think it's notable, because when Egbert won, he became the rightful master of the Elder Wand. Apparently, he and Dumbledore are the only two people who ever won the wand in a duel."
Peyton jotted down the notes that were being written on the board. She was sort of taking her time and trying to let everything sink it. Thing was, the thought of dueling had gotten her excited and concentration was hard to come by now.
She took the bag of crackers that was being passed down, took one and passed it to the next person. Notable duels? Oh! She knew of some. Peyton raised her hand and...
...Seth stole her answer. Dang it!
She settled for another answer instead. "Erm, there's Alberta Toothill vs. Samson Wiblin's duel. It was during the All-England Wizarding Duelling Competition in 1430." That's the longest answer she's remembered. Meh.

Scribble. Scribble. Scribble.
Merlin, there was a lot to know about duels! Ella was quite fascinated though and she listened with a smile on her face to everything that Professor Romanos had to say. She was quite surprised to learn that people involved in duels used to be kept in locked rooms and guarded. That was some serious business right now and also sort of made Ella feel like duels weren't such a good way to solve problems, especially if people couldn't be trusted to follow through with them.
Pixie crisps and Phoenix crackers? BEAM! The blonde took a few of each and passed along the bags with a smile. This was a nice treat, yeah? Big ups to Professor for this one.
Oh and notable duels? Ella knew lots about those. She liked to read, y'know? "During the battle of Hogwarts, there was lots of dueling. I've read that Professor Filius Flitwick defeated a Death Eater named Dolohov."
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

"If it has been declared a fight to the death and you have the proper witnesses, as well as battled fairly, than no, you will not be punished for it." Physically that is. Emotionally was another story. "That hasn't stopped the suffering party from trying to set the authorities on the survivor in the past however."
Oh yes, she was hoping this was brought up. "Bowing and how many paces you take are just a small part of the duel but still are as important as the duel itself. Though bowing is more about respect than mutual acknowledgement of the rules. One can always take back their word if they so wish." However dishonorable it may be. "But it would indeed be dangerous to not follow the rules, not for just the duelists sake, but the onlookers as well."
"Not to mention, the less amount of paces there are, the more difficult the duel will be for the two opponents." she said, glancing over to West. "These duels usually end much quicker and with nasty results."
"Yes, exactly right." Medea nodded. "One should always have witnesses present as well as a healer. Those are a given, unless the duelists decide against it, in which that would be rather...foolish of them."
"A part of it, yes." The professor nodded. "Though, indeed, there are no limits when it comes to duels of, improper, nature."
More or less what she said, but Medea was happy enough with it. "Yes, exactly. Thank you, Miss Eventide." A little text-book sounding too, now that she thought of it. Hmmm.
...
"Yes, that...would be a very good rule."
That was a good question from Nigel. "Well, with these particular duels, if it were a fair fight, even if not so on your opponent's part, ...there's not much one can do if this comes to pass. Even so if death was not part of what was agreed upon, the surviving duelist could take the honorable approach of taking responsibility for the passing of his opponent, but other than what consequences may or may not arise from it, death is...unfortunately...irreversible. If family was not present at the time, news would be given quickly and they would decide what to do from there."
"Not necessarily, Miss Fairfield." Medea said, moving a little so her legs stretched out in front of her instead. "One can always back down from a duel, though it is generally frowned upon to do so." Even if she thought it was smart to pick your battles instead of being pressured into one by society's standards.
"By 'other weaponry', I mean the use of potions or other magical objects of the like. And as it was stated before, completion points of duels include the first to disarm their opponent, disable their opponent, injuring their opponent, or to the death. Disabling by use of body-binding the opponent or similar occurrences."
Yeah...she figured it'd be something like that.
Using unforgivables in a duel didn't exactly sound like fair play, now did it? She could only imagine someone using one the moment the duel started...the other person wouldn't stand a chance.
Ooooo, crackers!
Lex waited for the bag to get to her then stuck her hand in and pulled out a few; not too much but enough to nibble on so she could be kept occupied, especially seeing as this wouldn't be much of a practical lesson.
She paused her nomming to look at the Professor when she asked a question. Immediately the girl froze. What's with asking a question like that?? Why would she do that?? This wasn't History of Magic class!!!!
These days, all the subjects seemed to be creeping in on each other's territory. That was all good and find until HISTORY was brought into a class like this!!!
