Hecate stood in the middle of the classroom. She seemed more pleasant than usual... for one thing she was no longer dying. She was cured, and she looked the picture of health... well... unless you count the streak of gray in her hair, and the one gray eye... You didn't really notice the eye unless you were close to her, and not many students would dare get close enough to see... except maybe...
Well...
She'd hex the hufflepuff who did...
She opened the door to the classroom and sat behind the desk.
ooc: This class will stay open for at least 72 hours (probably more.) Also thanks to Nixy! and AuroraQuinn for taking the picture of the Potions Classroom for me, and to Anna Banana for making it into a pretty graphic!
When the professor asked if she was familiar with the noxious potion, Belle only heard about it reading a book. She was in the library one day and was researching potions. She wanted to learn more. She then remembered the paragraph she read...
"Professor i know that noxious potions release a green fume or gas and it can make the victim violently ill. The maker of the noxious potion can also intend to injure or kill the person." That was all she knew so far.

Jory scrawled a definition down in his book as the Professor responded to the students. After some thought, he raised his hand to answer the second question. "I'm not familiar with the potion, Professor,'' the boy began. "But I think it will make the person who consumes it fall ill.''

The Noxious Potion? "I bet it's noxious, Professor," Alice stated matter-of-factly, a dead serious look on her face. Honestly. Were they supposed to read up on this stuff before lessons? Because professors always seemed to ask questions that only Ravenclaws and other geniuses could possibly answer. And that was why they were here, to learn, so why couldn't they just be TOLD everything and take notes? Hmm? That was what she would have really liked to know, not stuff about some weird-scented potion.
But, really, that was the best guess she could take.

"Morning Captain Skyler... Please do not flirt with the Slytherin Captain in class." She said said rolling her eyes. Why did students always want to whisper sweet nothings into each other's ears?
"Alright class... I'm feeling very well, and that means I can also get quite angry with you if you misbehave." She glared at the quidditch players. "That said, consider yourselves warned. Let's start. Who can tell me what the definition of the word noxious is?"
OKAY, there were a lot of things wrong with what Lafay said. First of all, her last name was pronounced SKY-LAR not SKY-LER. Second of all, she was no longer a captain, which was a source of discomfort for her. She was SO proud of Alice and all, but she missed the Pitch and everything that went along with it. Moving on from that. THIRD OF ALL, she was Head Girl Skylar. Fourth of all, she was NOT flirting with Dylan. Psh. That NEVER happened.
Of course, Lafay was really REALLY scary so she was not going to say any of those things. Instead, she settled for a quiet, "Yes, ma'am." There was no need to get into it with the woman. She was scary.
Okay, so there were two problems with Lafay's question. One was that she was not sure what exactly noxious meant and she had NO idea what type of potion that was to be honest. So she kept her hand down and stayed very silent. She was SO lost it was not even funny. They were talking about potions. The only thing she knew for sure about potions was that when she made them they blew up.

"I think it's just a distraction," Sierra said, raising her hand. "Like you said, being noxious doesn't mean it'll kill you. It just means it can injure you or really set you back somehow." She lowered her hand and gave it a little more thought. "I think a person would use it when they want to make a quick get-a-way or when they want to distract their opponent in a duel. Things like that. It releases green, odorous fumes, I think, and...most people get away really quickly when they see things like that."
Well at least she had been pretty close to the mark. The mention of the noxious potion brought a few memories up but they were too insubstantial to even try to remember. It didn't take a genius though to take a good stab at what it was. From what she did remember though it was a relatively hard one to make.
"Professor the fact that it's called noxious could explain what it does. It probably renders the drinker great harm or discomfort."

Well, hadn't everyone just swallowed a dictionary today?
Also, because Professor Lafay felt better, it was more so likely that someone was getting hexed today. Seemed legit to him. Who would it be was the better question...and if no one felt inclined, perhaps he could...instigate...

Hmph. Another question.
After some hand-raising, he spoke. "Professor, noxious can mean a smell that is simply unpleasant. So, perhaps this potion is one that makes someone smell revolting." Maybe it could...Maybe it couldn't. "Like if you were someone trying to deter someone's affections, perhaps you could take this and make them lose interest."...because nothing was more unattractive than a stinky female.

Noxious.. Dangerous.
Wait, so today we're gonna make poisonous potions? Well, maybe it wouldn't the one that could kill someone after consume it. Perhaps just like a prank that could make someone pass out or sick? Yup, just like the famous Skiving Snackbox from Weasley Wizard Wheezers.
"Well, Professor. I think the skiving snackbox also contains noxious potions? Because they could make someone sick or pass out." he spoke as he raised his hand. Luckily he'd never had them before but he used to prank people with Skiving snackbox when he was a child.

Alyssa blinked when Professor Lafay responded in reply to her answer. 'Whoa! Did I just get a very good from her? She DEFINITELY is feeling a lot better.' Alyssa thought to herself. Then Professor Lafay posed her next question. 'Hmmm.....what is the Noxious Potion?' Alyssa rubbed her chin as she thought out the answer. She had never seen one before but decided to hazard a guess. Raising her hand, Alyssa answered.
"Professor, I believe that the potion makes the person who is smelling it unconscious. It being something not good, its color would be most likely be green....I mean....it being something that is used for the benefit of the user, which is a good thing...it would most likely be green in color." Alyssa quickly amended her answer, belatedly remembering that Professor Lafay was the Head of House of Slytherin, whose house colors were green and black. 'Emphasis more on the black than green.' Alyssa nodded to herself.

Lana listened as everyone offered up input on the Noxious potion. She had heard of it, but she wasn't completely sure as to what it really did. Just from the sound of it, she figured it wasn't the kind of potion that was pleasant by any means.
Not wanting to assume too much about what little she did know about it, Lana remained quiet and just took notes as to what she had heard about the potion.
Melody wasn't quite sure what the answer was it the potion could do plenty of things. The only thing she could think of was it was something unpleasant to either the user or the person the user used it on. This time around Melody stayed quite and waited for someone else to answer.
Well, this got awkward and strange for the young snake. She could FEEL the tension radiating from Aurora and Richard. Were they not happy with each other? They always to seem to be. Peyton bit the inside of her cheek. AurorawasignoringRichard. Why? They were, not only her house mates, but her only friends here, really. She's met several people and got along with them, but Aurora and Richard were before she came to Hogwarts...so yeah.
She grasped her quill, her fingers slipping off the end. That's when she realized it had gotten wet along with the side of her parchment nearest to Richard that got soaked too. Peyton withdrew her wand and concentrated hard to dry her items, in the process she got Richard's as well and maybe even drying him a bit. Whaaat? She wasn't just going to let him sit there all soaked. Plus, no where in the rules did it say she couldn't help a housemate --and now teammate. And no one said she couldn't either. AND...what if it affected her potion in some way? That'd be bad.
Setting her wand aside, she picked her quill back up and began writing down notes. Not all noxious things could kill, okaaay. It still sounded like it could. Peyton hasn't heard of this Noxious Potion, and if she has, it was probably from her mother. In that case, Peyton had not paid attention at all, but she was interested in guessing. She raised her hand. "My guess it's a potion that can harm someone or make them ill." Since Lafay had mentioned that not all noxious things kill.

Honestly, Kendall didn't particularly even want to know what the noxious potion was supposed to do. She was in the class because she'd promised people that she was going to stick with the subject, and she'd determined even before Professor Lafay had started this lesson that there wasn't a risk of her turning into a zombie anymore. That didn’t make her any less nervous about the lesson, especially knowing now that they were learning a potion whose very name meant something unpleasant. She didn’t particularly want to brew a potion that smelled bad, or made somebody smell bad, and she definitely didn’t feel like passing out in the middle of class. Therefore, for now she was determined to keep her attention on the discussion, taking notes while technically not really listening to what was being said. Not focusing on that was what was going to get her through the lesson, and she could do more once they actually began brewing.
Besides, she knew better than to just offer up a random guess, and she really had no idea about what the potion was, or did, or what color it was supposed to be. Especially not when the professor had started things off by saying she was feeling well and wasn’t against discipline of her own device if they made her angry. She wasn’t going to do anything that could come close to angering her, just in case, and she hoped that nothing was going to happen after the incident that had started the lesson. At least she could remind herself that it was possible that the potion wasn’t meant to kill them. Once again, she wasn’t entirely sure that the professor was perfectly willing to if so inclined, and therefore, she was going to do everything she was told.

Thomas gaped at the Slytherin kid with the black hair.. West - he liked the name but what was he talking about? Latin and roots and words.. Tom felt incredibly stupid as he sat there and listened.. while not really listening at the same time. It went straight over his head.
Back to Lafay his attention went, though he caught Addy Kennedy smiling at him and he sent one back her way. She seemed dead nice.
Noxious.. yeah. Like noxious gases. The Gryffindor boy's dorms had it's own fair share of those..
Tom raised his hand once again. "Does it make poisonous gases? One whiff an' you're on the floor. Like puts you to sleep or makes you fall unconscious. Or maybe it jus' makes a bad smell." He added as an afterthought. "Like a stinkbomb in a bottle."
Hmm.. What else?

Well, obviously. What would something noxious do?
Kat raised her hand. "As you said, Professor, not every noxious thing would kill you. So if the potion wouldn't really mean to kill," Kat paused. Let it sink in. But... why would something not poisonous NOT kill you? It kind of required some more thinking. Think like a Ravenclaw, act like a Slytherin. Ok, whatever. "It could injure you." Injuring would be the nearest thing to death that a Potion could manage.

Yay, I answered the question right. But oh boy, it seems we may be making a noxious potion today. But so far all Lafay is asking is has anyone heard of it. Stay calm, nothing bad is happening at the moment and hopefully it won't. I will just answer the question to the best of my ability.
Oichi raised her hand, "A noxious potion is a potion that may be poisonous in some way and emits green clouds of smoke when brewed correctly.".

It was one of those 'I'm not in a good mood' days. For some unknown reason, she woke up with her eyebrows already in a knot as she endured a pounding headache that only added fuel to this dilemma. She couldn't even reign herself up to be cheery despite the fact that Professor Lafay had been looking better when she entered the Potions classroom. Way, way better than last term. And so, in place of her usual greeting, Beezus only bowed slightly at the woman before taking a seat and pouring herself over a blank piece of parchment whom she so laboriously spent an awful time glaring at.

...she only tore her glares away from the poor thing when class begun.
As glares to Quidditch players, including herself, were given, she had to take a deep breath just to not return it. Baah. Everything around her seemed to be innate irritants to her system even the Potions Mistress but she managed to take a hold of her expressions and stay calm.
Noxious?
Ugh. More like obnoxious. Everything...everyone appeared obnoxious and extremely unpleasant for the brunette at the moment. But she was guessing they'd be brewing the Noxious Potion.

Of course not all noxious things would kill her. It was going to be the other way around. She was going to kill all those noxious things. Inner!scowl.
Oh, hey. Bingo.
Just as she had guessed.
Her almost stoic expression with forked brows while her lips were closing to forming a single line didn't change even though her hunch had been correct. Instead, her hand went up to the air as she took a deep breath to contain the bad mood that was steaming up her senses, "I am familiar with the said potion, Professor." At least her voice wasn't in such an odious tone as her mood. "When completed, it releases green puffs of smoke that, although it hasn't been proven yet, can be considered poisonous, therefore, it might bring harm and injury to the drinker or the one that would be able to inhale the smoke."
Wasn't that just appropriate for her current mood?

"Does it smell so bad that it can make people unconscious?" West wondered out loud, hand up. "If its super noxious and stinky or whatever, and visibly noxious too, I can't imagine anyone would actually drink it, so it must be the vapours and gas and whatnot that do the job."

Noxious Potion? Well, he wasn't entirely familiar with the said potion, but he may have an idea on what it can do.
He raised his hand as soon as West finished reciting. "Professor, I suppose the Noxious Potion can corrupt the mind? Meaning, it can manipulate one's thinking to do harmful things." He wasn't sure about this, but he guessed it was worth a shot.

Minerva gave a small smile as she said she was correct. Using her last name didn't bother her and she didn't think it was sarcastic since so many used last names. Min listened to the others as they said their answers.
Not really knowing the potion Minerva thought about what it could mean. Putting up her hand, "Professor, could it be a potion that would make a person pass out for a bit or even fall into a sleep." she wasn't sure if that was right, but it sounded fun to do.
Nigel wondered if the noxious potion was poisonious. But she did say that maybe it was not. Nigel had no idea. But he did know that the noxious potion releases green smoke. Nigel raised his hand.
"Professor, it releases green clouds of smoke when it's done."
Nigel was not sure what else it does. But it sounds like an awesome potion. If not use on himself.

Yet she did remember one thing or two, "when released it gives off green clouds of smoke. Precisely what It does I am unsure, yet it is some kind of poison. Perhaps it makes a person collapse from all the harmful eh noxious fumes" She said upon raising her hand.

Now that's was good news..You know, finding out that not all noxious things will kill you. It was the thing the snake needed to hear. And she did so her life was safe here and she didn't have to flee the class. So she reached for a parchment and titled it.
Though it's been said more than once, Cassia still raised her hand and spoke. "The potion has not very pleasant effects in fact harmful and dangerous ones." That about summed it up. Why speak a lot. "I think it comes in handy if you want to get rid of someone or just teach them a lesson." That wasn't part of the question. She just felt like wording out her bitter, Slytherin-ish thoughts. That was allowed right.

Ethan was still getting his things from his bag and was preparing to Scourgify his supplies when he heard a voice at his side. Oh it was Nell.. he gave his fellow Ravenclaw a smile and was about to open his mouth to say, Sure have a seat when he heard Lafay start the lesson. He knew better to say anything now, especially since she was no longer knocking on death's door, so he settled for a nod in Nell's direction.. though she was already sitting now and it was probably a moot point.
He turned his green eyes back to the front of the room and thought about the first question. Noxious sounded an awful lot like obnoxious.. though he knew the meanings were a bit different. The other students quite sufficiently provided the answer and he didn't really have anything to add to the definition that wasn't just an echo.
Noxious potion and its effects.. The sixth year had never brewed that one and wasn't entirely familiar with it, though he had heard of it before. He thought over its description as well as some of the other answer and raised his hand. "I'm fairly sure that one gives off green fumes. So maybe instead of drinking that potion, one just opens the vial to release noxious fumes.. and maybe that renders the recipient unconscious?" Yes, it was a guess.. but it was a guess inferred from what he knew.

Not being familiar with the potion in question she listened to other suggestions and waited for Professor LaStreak to confirm or deny.
