Another term and another lot of new faces and names to memorise. Then again, with such a good memory and the opportunity to watch the sorting, life was a lot easier.
Seren stood, arms by her side, rocking back and forth on her heels and toes. The first lesson would be... different to what she would usually do. Better in some ways, but not so much in others. Feeling all 'mixed emotions' about the task she had in mind, she waited for them to arrive.
Hopefully the students would be in a right enough state of mind to gather in front of her and not cause too much trouble. Despite her lack of instruction to do so.
OOC: The lesson will officially begin in approximately 12 hours. If you haven't done so already then please read through the Herbology Rules and Expectations and the SS Site Rules. All SS Board Rules apply. IC rule breaking will result in IC punishment, OOC rule breaking will result in OOC punishment. Please behave appropriately and most importantly... have fun. If you have any questions don't hesitate to send me a PM.

After having jotted down everything she knew or could tell by looking at the mandrake, Ariadne folded her parchment and moved on, trying to avoid the crowds and looking for a more secluded plant. Her thoughts drifted back to her favourite perfume and what it contained. If she remembered correctly, rosemary was one of the ingredients. Maybe there would be some here too?
Several minutes of wandering around, but there it was. Unfolding her piece of parchment, Ari continued to fill in her table.

Plant: Rosemary
Appearance: woody herb, green and needle-like leaves, with pink flowers
Usable parts: as a whole; leaves;
Uses: perfumes, culinary, medicine (improving memory)
And that's entry two sorted. More herbs to go, though...

Only she didn't - not to worry, professor. Kurumi now thought that she had seen this girl's face before. Perhaps at one of the dinner parties she had attended while staying with Jonathan over the summer or perhaps from pictures.
Frowning for a moment, Kurumi's hand instinctively went to her chest...where the necklace wasn't at. It had been there for so long that gripping it was still a subconscious habit. But she didn't have that anymore. He had taken it. "Yeah...I know Jonathan," she said, her lips curling into a smile now. "I never called him that though, we both preferred to call each other by our names instead of nicknames. It was more...personal that way."
By now Kurumi's eyes had somewhat lost focus on the task at hand, but Juliet pulled her back in after a few minutes. "Hmmm? OH! Thank you for pointing it out," Kurumi said with a nod and a small bow. "There is some aconite over there that you can use for your chart," Kurumi pointed out just to Juliet's right.
Hand back on her quill, Kurumi placed the tip against her parchment and began to fill in the last bit of her chart. Hopefully...all this was right. She knew that the uses were but her mind had been a little, erm, distracted by other things.
SPOILER!!: zee parchment
Kurumi's silence didn't go unnoticed to Juliet. Of course Juliet knew she would be silent but she didn't meant to bring her cousin up, it just did because they had the same last name. Juliet gave her a faint smile. If she would take it back, just to make things not-so-awkward she would. Juliet is not very well in handling this sort of situations. She just freezes and sometimes would make it even worse.
"He's not a big fan of this subject in particular" she added, again, possibly something Kurumi would know. Maybe she should just change the subject, it's not making things less awkward. Shut up, Juliet. But then it wouldn't... Next thing she heard from her are about nicknames and how they both never had one. Jonathan doesn't have a nickname back at home too. She's surprised to hear this JonJon thing herself.
She's half-way through herself. Hooray! She only needed 2 and Kurumi is helpful enough to spot one plant from around. Juliet stood up and smiled at her "Thanks" biting her lower lip "I'm just not good with this" classifying those plants that is.
Aconite.
Juliet went over and bent down to further look at the aconite. It's really pretty and adorable. Juliet touched it for a few seconds before taking her parchment out from her pocket.
SPOILER!!: plus
Okay, she needed one more. ONE more and then she will be done. What Juliet liked about this is because everywhere you look there's plant after plant. She likes it. Eyeing a certain one, which is not that far from where she is standing, is catnip. She's sure about this one too... CATNIP. Walking towards the plant, Juliet once again bent down to touch the plant before writing on her parchment.
SPOILER!!: LAST!
Done. Done. Done.
Juliet had a wide grin on her face as she held the parchment on her hands and staring at what she already completed. She had to admit however, she did need some Herbology information more. Study it perhaps? Meh, maybe some light reading.
Glancing back at Kurumi, she walked over to her and placed one of her hand onto her shoulder "thank you for helping me with this" she held up her parchment for her to see. "I owe you." big time. "Tell me if you need anything..."
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Putting his quill behind his ear, Daichi lowered his arm that was holding the piece of parchment and held it by his side. Two herbs done, three to go.
The Slytherin looked around at his fellow classmates for a moment and overheard Kurumi and Juliet talking about Jonathan. A small sigh escaped his lips as the thought of how he actually missed the older Slytherin crossed his mind. He didn't go to them though but instead went to search for a new herb to write down on his list.
He suddenly stopped in front of a plant that reminded him...of the Duck Pond of course... He wasn't even sure if it was a herb or not and who cared? He wanted to write this plant down now because it associated with a duck pond, hmpf!

Now that Alyssa had successfully found 2 herbs, she continued to walk through the rows of planters while at the same time referring to her Herbs and What They Look Like book to help her identify the next herb to look for.
As she walked along the rows, she tried to match each plant with the ones in her book until she spotted one that looked similar to the picture in her book. It was a Rosemary
Alyssa quickly read through the notes in her book regarding its uses and what parts were used and added it into her table.

Reason: having problems with internet. Adding in table now.
Okay, only one herb was needed now. The Ravenclaw picked up the pace a little as she made her way over to the last row of beds on the side of the greenhouse. She had the textbook closed on her thumb in one arm and the other holding the quill, occasionally tapping it on her chin whenever she spotted something interesting or familiar. She paused here and there where a couple of students were discussing a herb or someone was poking something or reading from their textbook, she wasn't copying others but she did have interest in what the others were interested in.
And she moved on. Reaching the end of this row, she opened her textbook and fixated her gaze on one of the pictures and went looking for it. It took her longer than she thought, about ten minutes, in which she huffed and puffed a lot, until she came upon it.
SPOILER!!: Table

On her quest, Ari then noticed a plant she remembered from Potions class. Gwen would be proud of her, hehe. Taking her quill out, she began to fill in the third row of the table with information on the asphodel herb.
Text Cut: Parchment

Plant: Asphodel
Appearance: perennial herb with long leaves
Usable parts: root
Uses: Potions, like the Draught of Living Death
There wasn't that much to write about it, really. Unless she started a whole paragraph about the Draught of Living Death, but she was quite certain it wasn't what Bentley wanted. Shrugging it off, Ari was ready to move on to another plant. Was it just her or her classmates seemed to be moving on much quicker? Some of them had already completed their tables.
Glancing at her watch, the girl was reassured that there was plenty of time left. Nevertheless, she tried to hurry up a bit.

After the introduction and description of the task, Milton copied down the table into his notebook and grabbed his textbook before getting out of his seat and wandering around the greenhouse, searching for herbs. It took a minute for him to stare at a plant and his textbook to realize that it was an herb.
Crouching down, Milton inspected what he discovered was a basil plant and wrote down what it looked like. It smelled really strongly, too. Then he went through his textbook and copied down information for the assignment.
Annabelle was walking around the classroom when she noticed a strange looking herb. She got out her textbook and identified it. She even was feeling it and it was slimy. "Ewww gross!" Belle said as she recoiled her hand. She wiped her hand on her pants to get the slimy feeling away from her hands. She got out her quill and wrote down the information.
Uses
1. Helps one breathe underwater. One can have fins and gills.
After she copied down her list, it seemed easier. She made a list instead of a chart, lists seemed easier to her anyways. She was walking around for more herbs to fill in her chart.

From medicine, to potions, to perfumes...these herbs had many more uses than Ari would've thought initially. Moving closer to a plant that wasn't surrounded by many students, the girl noticed its carrot-like appearance. But it wasn't a vegetable per say, although her grandma used it a lot when cooking. Yes, it was caraway.
Deciding that this would do as a fourth entry, Ariadne once again picked up her quill and completed the designated spaces. First of all, she looked up the herb's scientific name in the textbook.
Text Cut: parchment
Quote:
Plant: Caraway/Carum carvi
Appearance: carrot-like: long stem, feathery leaves, green, with brown fruits that look more like seeds
Usable parts: fruits and roots
Uses: cooking, fragrances
Great. Now she was craving food made with caraway. The fifteen-year-old hastened away before her stomach rumbled. It was still a long way till a decent meal in the Great Hall.
So it seemed that Selina was right to keep her mouth shut. The rest of her peers seemed to have a very good grasp on the material that Bentley had proposed. She herself was not so knowledgeable on the lesson as a whole. But when Bentley explained it more acutely and concisely Selina understood it all a little better. For once she was glad that she had kept her mouth shut. All she would have done was make a fool of herself if she had answered.
When they moved onto the first part of the lesson, Selina did a victory dance. They could use their textbooks. At least she would have a clue as to what was going on. The textbooks were a gift sent down to her from the Bentley goddess. Just as she was about to get up to go and grab a textbook, Selina saw that their were further instructions on the board. Right, that was important. So she scribbled that down as quickly as possible, before getting up to grab the textbook.
Though Max wasn't wild about Herbology, he was certain he could locate some herbs without a problem. He quickly drew a chart, being careful to construct straight lines, then he set off around the greenhouse.
The first herb that came to mind was dittany. He wasn't sure why - he just liked it for its healing properties. Max poked around the greenhouse for half a minute before finding it, identifying it first by the shape of the leaves, then by its release of vapors he knew to be flammable upon closer inspection. Good. "Burnin' Bush - check," he muttered under his breath as he began to scribble on his parchment.

So what did she have so far? Mandrake. Rosemary. Asphodel. Caraway. One more to go before her table would be complete. Trying to dodge the many people walking around, Ariadne noticed another plant familiar from Potions classes. On closer inspection, she was indeed sure that it was a Valerian. Scribbling the name down under the Plant heading, she thought of a good way to describe it, but not much came to mind, so she made use of the textbook.
Text Cut: Parchment
Quote:
Plant: Valerian
Appearance:roots merging into a conical root-stock, round and hollow stem, paired leaves, varying in breadth, with tiny pink flowers
Usable parts:roots
Uses: Potions like the Draught of Living Death and the Draught of Peace; ingredient in Treacle Fudge; medicine-against insomnia.
With the mention of Treacle Fudge, Ari's thoughts instantly flew to Honeydukes and sweets. Not helping. But at least her table was now complete. The girl moved back to where she first sat at the beginning of the class so as to leave room for manoeuvre to the students who were still working. She wondered what they were going to do next...
Sarah listened what the teacher had to say and then wrote down some notes. The first herb she spotted was a Rosemary.
She wrote down the neccesary information in a table.
Quote:
Plant: Rosemary
Appearance: Evergreen, needle like leaves with white, pink purple or blue flowers
Usable parts:the whole thing
Uses: Decoration, To improve memory, for cooking and medicine, The leaves are sometimes used to flavor various foods, like stuffings and roast meats.

Once he was done writing down the information about his first herb, Rosemary, Richard dropped the quill on the table and went on with looking for more herbs. Walking slowly he eyed the greens thinking which ones would be proper herbs. Well...were not all those herbs in a sense? He was not sure but meh...it did not matter. All he had to do was to look for them so...back to the job.
All had green leaves though and that made it slightly difficult tell which was different. Mentioning green leaves, the Slytherin stopped beside one particular herb which had nothing but green leaves, unlike the Rosemary. He took his book and checked the info for it, once he was done, he went back to the parchment and wrote it down.

Points? Ethan shot a confused look at the Puff girl to whom the professor was speaking. Apparently this school had some sort of points system that was deducted for infractions. Bizarre...
Ethan's attention turned back to Professor Bentley as she gave the students instructions. Introductory lesson? The Ravenclaw lifted an eyebrow as he first looked at the professor then around the room. It sounded like something a first year should complete.... but he noticed there were many different ages filling the room. Apparently all the years took the same classes here. This school was getting weirder by the minute...
Ethan gave a quick shrug as he pulled out his parchment. At any rate, he'd get this piece-of-cake lesson done and then perhaps he could move on to something more challenging. Meh, he was sounding like a true Ravenclaw already. Shaking himself of that thought, Ethan started over to a corner of the greenhouse. His eyes landed on a familiar leaf and his hand tentatively reached out before quickly pulling back. Nope, he wasn't about to touch that one. "Most definitely a nettle," he murmured, the hint of a grin pulling at the corners of his mouth.
He jotted a few notes down on the parchment before his eyes searched the greenhouse for the next herb.
SPOILER!!: Ethan's notes
Plant: Nettle
Appearance: Green, oval leaves ending in a point and arranged opposite sides of the stem; leaf edges are serrated; stinging hairs on the leaves and stem
Usable parts: leaves and stem - especially with the stinging hairs left intact, flowers
Uses: potions, beverages, has healing properties

Next, Max wandered the greenhouse for just a moment before stumbling upon a familiar plant nearby: asphodel. That was a good one. Its long, slim leaves made it easily identifiable. Before writing, Max glanced at those around him - Louisa was around, and she seemed to be done already. So did Kurumi. How were they finished already? Ah, well. Twenty minutes wasn't even up yet. He had plenty of time.
Drawing his attention back to his parchment, Max filled in the next row of boxes on his chart.
Text Cut: Chart
Deep down in his heart, he felt like he was doing something wrong. That feeling had stuck with him all throughout his Hogwarts years. Perhaps one day he would get over it, but today was not that day. He scratched at his eyebrow and peered down at his chart, wondering if he should double check with a textbook. Nah.
Two down, three to go. What else?
...Aha! A nearby purple-flowered plant was calling his name...
9 3/4 ticket holder / The SS Mentalist / Sherlock / The Master Of Everything / Josh + <3 = Ev
Basil.
It had a weird name that Rich did not like for some reason. Basil. Meh. Such a lame name. After writing down the info for the basil plant or herb, whatever it was, the Slytherin boy dropped the quill and looked at it for a bit more. It definitely was not an attractive plant. Next time he was going to try and find a better and more useful plant. So, moving on he started to look for such a plant.
Green, green, green. Everywhere was green but there were also plants with flowers too. He decided to go for those so he made his way to the plants with flowers and eyed each carefully. There were of course some which were very easy to identify, like the rose, but then the Slytherin saw what he was looking for: Wolfsbane. Smirking at the herb a bit, he went back to write down the info.

Ella had been scribbling down notes, taking down any new information her classmates shared about herbs. She was surprised by how much some people knew, wondering if they were really into Herbology or something. Some people liked to read a lot, too. That could have been the reason for knowing so much. Ells answer was kind of a fail by comparison.
Right...an herb hunt. Ella could totally do this, yeah? She just needed to be a detective. Something she was totally capable of, minus the whole Edrilyn debacle of last term. Meh. Grabbing her chart, book, and quill, the third year took a look around the greenhouse, debating on where to go first. Her eyes fell on a familiar looking plant and she headed in that direction, ready to do some herb identifying.
Why couldn't he just sit and look gorgeous? Why was he having to walk around and interact with the greenery. SERIOUSLY, Bentley? EXPLAIN YOURSELF, WOMAN. Some would say it was unhealthy to have such an obsession with plants. Perhaps he should recommend she go see Healer Tillstorm... that was at least a woman with a USEFUL profession (and who also had some interest in plants, but not an unhealthy obsession).
Looking at the table on the blackboard, Elijah quickly scribbled a rough copy on a piece of parchment and got to work. As far as he was concerned all plants were herbs. At least for this exercise at least, so coming across a purple plant he filled out the first row on his table:
Quote:
Plant: The purple one Appearance: Rather plant like. Usable Parts: The plant parts, i'd imagine Uses:To make my life a misery To decorate a pretty girl's hair.

The assignment was easy enough. Perhaps, a little too easy because Aspen's mind was already wondering to ways to make it more interesting. She was glad not to have to work with partners or to have to interact with Bentley directly. In other words, freedom to do this assignment as she saw fit.

She made a POINTED EFFORT to walk around any patches of sunlight shining in through the greenhouse.
And she approached the Hufflepuff.
"The purple one is.... safe for usssssss. Good job." Just so he knew. Aspen smiled, politely even, bearing her teeth with all the innocence she could muster. "You better stay close though."

It was clear by the look on the Professor's face that Lex was right. Why wouldn't she be right? Everyone knew that once something was on the television it had to be true. Just like all those ads that they put up, weren't they completely true. Yup, they were so her definition most obviously had to be right.
Yikes...
This was the second time she had seen someone losing points for arriving late. See this as why she tried her best to be early...that and she didn't want to be hauled off by a dragon.
She looked up at the Professor as she began talking and felt the blood leave her face when she said that they would have to go walking around. So then...they would have to move...as in she would have to move from her side--there were so many things that could go wrong there!!! Deep breaths Lex... She had an idea. Very subtly she pulled off the dragonhide gloves and stuck them in her pocket. There, now she wouldn't be target should that beast show up.
Now onto searching for the plants--herbs...whichever...Ooo that one looked promising and she headed over to it. Her brows furrowed. She didn't know what it was called...in fact...she didn't know what anything in the greenhouse was called...

Max leaned toward the purple-flowered plant and peered closely at it. Yep. Aconite. He pulled back and wobbled his quill between his pointer and middle fingers, trying to think up what its uses were. Well, potion-making, of course. That's how he knew it in the first place. Didn't it have quite a few common medicinal uses, too? Perhaps? Hmm.
He was PRETTY sure he knew what he was talking about with this one so Max scribbled down the name, followed by a few hunches at its uses, then he described the appearance and usable parts.
Text Cut: chart
Over halfway done! His eyes lingered from one surrounding plant to the next. As a Slytherin boy neared the aconite, Max scooted out of the way. He gave him a polite, half-smile, then turned his attention back to the plants. He didn't recognize any other herbs he immediately knew in the area, so he set off to meander through the greenhouse once again. Herbology was BORING.
Poor Aidan. Max had surely let down the young boy with his encouragement that magical plants would probably be fun for him.
The assignment was easy enough. Perhaps, a little too easy because Aspen's mind was already wondering to ways to make it more interesting. She was glad not to have to work with partners or to have to interact with Bentley directly. In other words, freedom to do this assignment as she saw fit.
And Aspen saw fit to see how Elijah was doing on HIS assignment.

And she approached the Hufflepuff.
"The purple one is.... safe for usssssss. Good job." Just so he knew. Aspen smiled, politely even, bearing her teeth with all the innocence she could muster. "You better stay close though."
To say that Count Drodessula startled him would have been an understatement. When the girl popped out of nowhere, Elijah backed away suddenly, whacking his ankle on a stool that was inconveniently positioned behind him. He muttered a few curse words as he frantically rubbed the back of his ankle, willing the pain to subside.
The pain was mostly forgotten, however, when he heard the words leave Aspen's mouth. "For..." GULP, "... us?" he repeated. Oh Merlin. It was TRUE. She had purposefully turned him so that she could have a new vampire FRIEND to play with. She had infected him so that she could force him to join their little nocturnal club! Elijah had been terrified of Aspen ever since she bit and infected him, but he was still a MAN and he refused to be bullied by this FANGER (even if his confidence did waver slightly when she showed off her teeth). When his fangs grew in, Elijah knew he'd still be attractive. In fact, maybe he'd start a trend...? But, he'd still rather NOT be a vampire.
"What... what you did to me... was NOT cool, Aspen," he managed to mumble. "You should ask someone's PERMISSION before... before... turning them. There has to be... laws, or something... against that." Elijah might have reported her to the authorities, if he wasn't scared she and her vampire clan of a family wouldn't come and rip out his throat... Besides, he was going to be seeing Healer Tillstorm for a cure, anyway. Or so he hoped.
Trying to avoid the girl some more, he quickly walked past her to a plant that was next to the purple one he had been making notes on previously. He recognised the smell, actually. He began to take in the scent of the plant with the small, white balls, occasionally looking behind him to see if Aspen was still lurking behind him like a creeper...

Okayyyyy. So this should be interesting. Right. Interesting to see if Sierra could figure all this out without getting annoyed, that is. Sierra grabbed a hold of her parchment, found a quill with plenty of ink, and then set off on a journey around the area.
She passed a few plants she wasn't sure about. Hmm. Then there were the ones she knew were herbs but couldn't remember all the uses for them. She'd just skip those altogether. There had to be some easier plants around here somewhere...
That was when she came upon a Shrivelfig, and she thought she knew enough about it to complete a line on the chart. She copied down its name and described it the best way she could. Remember there was a purple liquid inside of it that was used in the Shrinking Solution, she jotted down that, too.
Mmkay, that'd been pretty easy. Now she just had to find four more where that came from.
There's some good in this world and it's worth fighting for| LOTR|Whovian|Sherlock Fan
Now that she had found 3 types of herbs, Alyssa was on the lookout for her fourth. She knew that the Professor had them growing all over the Greenhouse. So she continued walking through the plants, keeping a wide berth from the man-eating plants that would occasionally pop up their heads and try to take a snap at her.
As Alyssa searched through the flowerbeds, she continued to match each plant with any of the herbs identified in her book. Finally she came across that looked a little like a sage bush. When she bent down to smell the leaves, she found its smell familiar. Carefully, checking the leaves with the picture in the book, Alyssa was glad to see that it matched. She had found another herb, Sage
Noting the position of where she had found the herb, she quickly picked up her journal and wrote in the information that she found in her book into her Herb Table.
