Transfiguration Lesson II [Inside the Practice Room]
You are not in the classroom today, no, you are in the slightly bigger practice room just down the corridor. As you enter you notice that gone are all the usual things kept there, to be replaced with four rows of plain chairs (no desks). Two rows down the left hand side wall, and two down the right. On the wall above the chairs on the left is a sign that reads "1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th YEARS SIT HERE", and on the opposite wall is a sign that says "5th, 6th & 7th YEARS SIT HERE."
At the back of the room are red and green clothes makers dummies, with spring-loaded bases, arranged all higgledy piggledy rather than in uniform rows. In the big space in front of the them, and between the rows of chairs, stands Professor Magnus. With her hands clasped behind her back, and a smile on her face, she is ready to greet you as you arrive.
SPOILER!!: Classroom Layout for those that wish to know
OOC: Class will start at about 5pm, so for now please just have your character enter the lesson and take their seat in the correct place. No excessive chatter though, please!
Kennedy's eyes had been set on the dummies the whole time. Were they going to practice on them, because if they were then that would be really fun. He looked back to professor Magnus when she began to speak. So, now they had to go with the older students. Alright the, but he did feel better with the younger ones. Maybe, that was because with the younger group he was one of the older students. Whatever, he stood up and made his way to the other side. That meant he was going to get to learn the trickier spell. He liked that.
Ooooh! Daichi was looking forward towards this lesson when the Professor started to speak. He listened to the first question and after some thinking he raised his hand.
" It cuts things, Professor!" he said, his hand high up and he shook his hand. The second year made a mental note to thank Evan for telling him to check his books before school. It was much easier to know some things than being clueless in class.

Looking away with her cheeks looking like they'd been badly sunburnt, she also wondered what was the reason they needed a bigger room. What were they going to do?
... she was afraid to ask.

Scowling, she raised her hand. "Diffindo does three things--it rips, divides, and separates an object," she said. Pretty gruesome-sounding for such a simple spell. "...into parts," she added as an afterthought. Just to make it clear that there was a purpose.

Still glimpsing at the dummies, she wondered what they'll do with them. Do we get to practice each spell on them?! That would be interesting!

Was this how things were always going to be? She hoped not.
When she asked who knew what diffindo was Selina wanted to scream. She learned this in Charms last year, "Its a severing charm, ma'am. Its often mistaken for transfiguration.
"You are all correct, of course. It is a severing charm, and as Selina pointed out, not strictly Transfiguration. But it will be used to assist whichever upperclassman that you younger folks will be pairing up with." But she wasn't going to tell them exactly what they would be doing with it just yet. "So I thought it prudent to teach those of you who don't yet know it, since charms and transfiguration are very closely linked." Isabelle gave the girl a smile and wink before pulling out her wand. With a quick flourish she conjured a melon and held it out in front of her.
"The wand movement is down, then up, then down again. In one fluid motion," Isabelle held the melon in one hand and showed them the movement with her wand. Not saying the spell though, could be bad. "Now, would anyone like to demonstrate it for me? Anyone at all."

Alyssa raised her hand to volunteer and stood up. She had seen what the Professor had done. Taking out her wand, she copied exactly the movements. "Is this how it's done, Professor?". Waving her wand down, then up and then down in one fluid motion, Alyssa did the wand movements for the spell.

There weren't a lot of fifth, sixth, or seventh years here. Why? Did they, at least the sixth and seventh years, all drop Transfiguration after OWLs? It was a pretty useful subject though, so Vashti couldn't see the reason behind such a thing. Maybe they were just being lazy, or they'd overslept. Probably one of those.
So this lesson was about the Severing Charm? Except they were in Transfiguration, and that was a charm. Confusing? A bit.
She would've volunteered to demonstrate, but another student already beat her to it. So she just watched silently, her notebook balanced on her knee and her quill raised to take notes when needed.

Don't all rush at once. Heh.
Isabelle smiled at Alyssa as the girl stood up, nodding when she repeated back the wand movement that she herself had just shown them. "Wonderful. Now if you take this and place it on the floor - I'd like you to cut it in half for me please. The pronunciation is 'Dif-FIN-doe'. Have a go, so everyone can see." Isabelle held the melon out for the girl to take.

Diffindo?
They were going to need it to assist upperclassmen? Eh...seeing he was sitting at that side, it meant one of the littles was going to attempt to diffindo him. Sounded great!!! Josh was going to have fun watching him or her try to attack him with the spell...
Wait...
The professor said 'assist' though, so it probably did not involve attacks. Eh...it could have been fun but whatever.
Moving on his seat for a more comfortable position, Josh just stared at the side of the younger students wondering who would be brave enough to pick him.

India had been sitting on the older students side, watching and waiting for instructions.
Nothing. Not yet, not even a peep. Pfft it was like she was inivisble - wait they all were invisible.
So running her hand through her hair she sighed and just decided to try the wand movement - without the words. No accidental chopping someone's hair or worse off.

Sitting back slightly, Mina watched as all the fourth years made there way over to to the other side. It really didn't dawn on her just how lopsided most of the lessons were. Shrugging, she turned her attention back to what the underclass-men were learning.
They would be paired up later, but she glanced over to the other side briefly. She didn't really know that many underclass-men, but she didn't think they were all too bad. She just hoped that whomever she was paired with wasn't a self-proclaimed know-it-all or something.
Glenn looked over her shoulder at the table of older students. She didn't really want to work with them; she had always learnt best on her own.
She also noticed how much taller they were than all of the younger students like herself. Glenn wondered how much more magic they knew than all of them. Gee - even half the first-years knew more than she did about spells and performing them.

Kourtney made a note of the incantation and the wand movement, and watched with interest as an older girl volunteered to perform the spell. She hadn't a clue about how to do the severing spell, but hey, that's why they were here, wasn't it? Laying her quill down, she watched closely for the demonstration. She was sure they'd have to perform the spell themselves later and she didn't want to miss anything.

Isabelle took a step forwards and clapped her hands together to call for quiet. "Okay everyone, we'll get started. As you can see we are not in the classroom today, it was a little too small for what I have planned." They needed space. Lots of space. "You'll also notice that you're divide into two groups. That is because there will be two spells learnt today. One for the younger students, and a slightly trickier one for you older students," Isabelle smiled at the small number of kids to her left.
"Although we are a bit lopsided with numbers, so could all you fourth years please move to the opposite side?" she gestured with her hands as if she was sweeping them across herself. "Alright then, first spell and first question to you 1st through 3rd years - can you tell me what 'Diffindo' does, please?"
Kurumi's jaw momentarily dropped when she heard that she was considered in the "older" group. It really only hit her then the weight of being a fourth year. It was the final transition into the upper grades, the real in between year. If you divided all seven year up evenly that is. Three for the younger grades, and three for the upper grades, leaving fourth year somewhat in limbo. Neither being young nor old. OWLs were the indicator for reaching the threshold perhaps.
She was still over thinking things.
Slightly reluctantly, Kurumi flashed a smile at Selina and began gathering her things. She followed Gideon to the other side of the room where she already saw Josh chomping at the bit to do something active. She smiled at Jonathan as she took a seat towards the back - seeing as everything else had already been taken.
Her hand shot up, out of pure reflex mind you, when Professor Magnus asked the question before realizing that it was directed at the younger group of students.
Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevermind...
Kurumi sat and waiting for Professor Magnus to finish with the younger group. Merlin...she hoped they wouldn't be learning anything too complicated. She didn't want to make something or someone melt in the process...

Alyssa took a big gulp. She didn't expect the Professor to ask her to actually perform the spell for real. But she trusted that the Professor knew what she was doing, so she walked up, took the melon and placed it on the floor. Then taking out her wand, she waved her wand down, then up and down again in one fluid movement while saying the words:
"Dif-FIN-doe"
A green beam shot out from her wand, and engulfed the melon within a split second. Immediately the melon split into half sending small bits of melon flying in all directions. Taking a deep breath, Alyssa wiped some off her face and looked at Professor Magnus. She was sure that she had done the spell correctly but needed confirmation from her.
August had been watching as the Professor expalined and then demonstrated the wand movement for the Diffindo spell. The she pulled out a melon. The Gryffindor sat up straighter in his chair as Professor Magnus pulled out a melon.
Yum! Were they going to get any of it to eat? Hmm?
Then she called upon someone to split it open, and a younger Hufflepuff girl stood up and did it. Auggie clapped quietly for her.

Tori had entered the Transfiguration classroom -- or practice room, rather -- with great suspicion for the doll thingies all lined up. Some were green, which was good because that was Slytherin's colors, but then some were also red. Hmm. She wasn't a big fan of red.
She also didn't like having to sit with the little kids on the left side of the room. Pffft. Lame. Who separated students by age anyway?
Tori sat still and stared at the professor as she started asking questions about spells which she had never heard of, much less used. Whatever, professor. It looked easy enough.
Were they going to be sewing or something today, then?

Minerva saw Alyssa get up from beside her and do the spell perfect. She had no doubt that Alyssa wouldn't do it correct the first time. Minerva smiled at Alyssa and mouthed "great job" Minerva took her own wand and practiced the movement thinking of the word in her head.

Elise raised her hand, particularly happily today. She knew this one! Oh, mememe!
When Professor Magnus inclined her head towards El, indicating that she answer, answer she did. "Diffindo's a severing spell, used to cut things open!"
Feeling pleased with her answer, she lowered her hand and stared around the classroom for more answers, jotting them down in her trusty notebook.

Elise clapped as she saw one of them spit open a melon.

Come on over little ones... we don't bite... hard.
Sitting back with her legs stretched out in front of her and her arms crossed over her chest Marie waited for the professor to ask a question directed at the older students.
This could prove to be a very boring class with all this waiting around.
Salander, who was sitting directly behind Marie, cleared his throat as he propped himself straighter in his seat curious and a little concerned for the current discussion. It was a simple enough spell, Difindo, but in the hands of young ones it could have quite unpredictable results. He should know, he has unpredictable results and he's older than most people in this room save the Professor.
Then again, if the young ones get to do Difindo, what awesome spell does the Professor have for the older students. He kept his eyes on the Professor, curious at what next is in store.
