It was such a nice day outside, the weather was mild, not quite warm but not cold either. Just the way Seren liked it. Unfortunately the lesson wasn’t being held outdoors, no, it was being held in Greenhouse One, where the air was cooler, and the smell of damp soil filled the air.
As you enter the greenhouse the first thing you notice are the stools arranged to the side of the greenhouse by the door, and directly opposite these are stools of a different variety. That’s right, toadstools! While they may look harmless from a distance it’s not wise to get too close to them just yet, after all you wouldn’t want to be sent to the Hospital Wing before the lesson has even started.
Waiting patiently for the students to arrive, Professor Bentley stood by the door to welcome them as they entered; Though she was careful to position herself near the seating area so that she can keep an eye on any mischief making. Standing slightly to the side of the toadstools, was Professor Bentley’s old blackboard, neat and tidy cursive writing slowly appearing on its surface- as if by magic!

Standing to the side so that some of the students could have a better view of the toadstools before them, Seren turned her head and gave them a fond look. Precious little toadstools they were. With such an amazing reddish brown cap, and white stem... stunning.
Right next question... to keep these students were on their toes.
“Who can identify this type of toadstool for me?”
Jez raised her hand. "These toadstools might be Leaping Toadstools, but since they seem relatively quiet and still, they are probably Biting Toadstools, which have reddish brown caps and slim white stems similar to these. The Biting Toadstool has big teeth under the cap which lash out at prey or predator, although these teeth are not particularly dangerous to humans - not fatal, anyway. The Biting Toadstool is bigger that the Leaping Toadstool, but they do share characteristics." Jez was really enjoying herself here.
Lana jotted down the notes about toadstools as they appeared on the blackboard. Healing potions? That made her think and she raised her hand, "Excuse me professor. If many toadstools are considered poisonous, why are they used in healing potions?
As the professor pointed out some other toadstools, Lana peered over some other students to get a better look. From what the others were saying, she didn't want to know what kind they were. Or not first hand at least.
"When you use just a tiny little bit of something poisoness your white blood cells notice it and go after it along with what ever else is causing the same symptoms as the plant." Mickey stated with out looking away from her notes. "That's what Meme told me anyway." looking at the girl across from her. "It's the same technique muggles use in homiopathic meds." She said her Boston accent coming through from the embrassment of just blurting that out. 'don't take house points don't take house points' Mickey started chanting in her head.
"It's not who you are that holds you back, it's who you think you are not."
Adam had been listening intently and taking notes while Professor Bentley spoke and the students answered her questions. Adam was certainly not the Herbology expert in the slightest, so he preferred to sit back and just listen to people talk. He stared at the toadstools on the table by Professor Bentley...eh...mushrooms. He didn't really mind the ones that you could eat but those...those didn't really seem all that appetizing.
"Are they Amanita muscaria?" Adam asked, not sure if that was the right answer at all.

Sage, who wasn't one to be excited for Herbology, was getting quiet bored. She was slumped down over her desk, leaning her cheek against her hand. Plants were quiet boring to her, they didn't do much of anything. Why on earth would she need to know these things.

Sage looked at the toadstool for several minutes before coming to a conclusion.
She had no idea.
Shrugging her shoulders, Sage took a wild guess, "Is it a Cleopatra Cap?"
Charner really wished school wasn't such a formal place. There would be a lot more jumping about and excited noises coming from her. As it was she sat eagerly in her stool, staring at the plants across from them as the Professor talked, shifting this way and that.
Until puzzlement had her. And she froze. Blinking, her eyes turned up to the Professor with confusion, and her hand raised. "Professor, if they are poisonous, how can they be used as an ingredient in healing potions? Isn't that a bit of a... contradiction?" Unless of course healing had a completely different definition depending on the person it was aimed at.
It didn't so much matter to her as to what kind of Toadstool it was. It was a Toadstool. And they were going to get to play, right?

Another question? Raven surely didn't know how to indentificate the toadstool. Yawn, actually she didn't have much interested with Herbology, but when she remembered her mom's suggestion to take lesson that required to assign as a healer..
Right, notes... for the students’ benefit. Not hers.
With another flick of her wand, answers appeared beneath the question on the board. The smart ones would copy these down. She wasn’t about to baby them into doing it. It was their responsibility.
Allowing the students to mull this information over for a minute, Seren glanced behind her at their special guests... they would get to that soon.

OOC: I'm off to bed... tis late. Though I am not in the classroom Bentley is. So NO chatting etc.... I'll reply when I wake up, approx 8-9 hours from the time of this post. Thanks!
Janice thoguht that it looks like the poisonous mushrooms you can find in forest in the Muggle World. But it's a toadstool, so-
"Is it, err, the Leaping Toadstool, Professor?"

It is a popular but undefined term for a mushroom, and unlike some mushrooms that can be eaten, toadstoods are believed to be unedible and poisonous."
Alyssa hoped that her answer was correct.

They live in this little village, in toadstools, which is really cool. And they eat these berries, which they call smurfberries. They are really cool. They are in a book I've got....I can show you it if you want." Indiana smiled as she opened up her text book, so she could look up toadstools. She figured that this lesson wasn't going to just be about smurfs, and why they live in toadstools. Woah. Maybe she could go find a smurf later.
But back to the quesiton. Indiana looked up at the toadstool. She had no idea what it was, but hmm. She looked back at the textbook. It would be in here right. Sticking her nose into the book, she tried to find a image, or some text that described the toadstool that the teacher had showed them. "Is it a leaping toadstool?"
Seren was a little concerned now. Smurfs? blue people, three apples tall? ... She gave Spike a quick look, he should spend some time with her catching her up... because this was... beyond weird.
Turning back to Indy, Seren smiled warmly. Poor girl. "Sure... bring it by my office and I'll take a look."
Did these smurf things really exist? Or was it a figment of her imagination?

Listening to the other students, they were talking about whether it was a leaping toadstool or not. It certainly could be, but there was one that she hadn't hear anyone say yet.
"Professor? Is it a Talking Toadstool?" she asked, her hand raised high so that the professor would be able to see her.
"No... not a talking toadstool." She said shaking her head. Interesting guess though.

"Poisons in small amounts, when balanced with other chemicals and toxins result in positive, harmless reactions. Many poisons are used in potions, but they are used sparingly and are usually teamed with ingredients which negate the effects of the poison without spoiling the positive effects of the ... toadstool for example." Yep, poison wasn't always bad, it didn't mean you would always die. "Peppermint, for example is a fine stabilizer often used in potions for this reason."

Her head turned at the sound of 'Hutchinson' coming from a little girl. Curious. Ellie shot Spike a glance and saw him shrinking down in his seat...
Oh My Merlin! Spike's ickle sister was a firstie!! Awwwww!!
Then Bentley went on about toadstools. Or, Ellie guessed that was what it was about, but she'd tuned most of it out. For all she knew, the Professor could have changed the subject to Venomous Tentacula or something. Whatever it was, it was nothing that caught the interest of the Fifth year.
She also didn't hear the question asked. But was aroused when the students around her began answering. And, judging by their responses, she wouldn't have known the answer had she been listening, anyway.
Merlin this girl cracked her up. Seren grinned broadly. Giving into the Captain's wishes she answered her question... best ut the girl out of her misery. "We identify toadstools by their shape, with their iconic umbrella-shaped cap, their stems are also usually thicker than mushrooms."
Didn't the girl attend her lesson on identification and cautions last term?

Instead she quietly pulled out her Herbology notebook and quickly jotted down the stuff written on the board. Biting toadstools? BITING toadstools?!
Oh dear Merlin, please no.
But some others were suggestion leaping toadstools. Those sounded much better than mushrooms that were capable of biting her fingers off.

Also I would guess that since it's less poisoness that it would boost the immune system a lot less than a more poisoness one." Her face turned bright red. Yup she was wrong. "Or not." "Nope... interesting guess though," she said offering the girl a smile. Huh? a hypothesis? Well this would be interesting. She allowed the girl to talk. "An interesting theory, I would love to indulge on it later perhaps?"

Seren turned to give the 'stools an appreciative look. They really were magnificent.
"Now don't be alarmed, these toadstools - while they do feed on flesh, they don't have near enough of an appetite to take a chunk out of you. "Now as your aware, toadstools are often used in potions, though we generally use caps, stems and spores, Biting toadstools offer us a different ingredient."
"Fangs!"
She waited for the reality of what was about to happen to sink in. "Today, we will be harvesting biting toadstool fangs. But only the fangs."
After a brief pause, taking the time to make eye contact with each student, she continued, "The biting toadstool is blessed with the presense of many teeth, which you will see around the underneath rim of its cap. There are, two fangs which protrude a little further than the rest of the teeth. These are the ones we will be harvesting."
"But before we do that, you need to familiarise yourselves with a numbing charm. This will ensure the toadstools aren't in any pain when we.... so nicely yank them out."
Sort of like dentistry.
"You are to repeat the incantation after me." She paused, then flicked her wand at the board.

Adam's shoulders slumped when she had listed that leaping toadstools was not one of the answers. He knew it probably wouldn't be right, but still,he didn't want to hear the right answer because he would have let himself down.
After getting over his momentary sadness an disappointment,he paid attention, once again to Professor Bentley. Now they were to repeat the incantation,as a way to practice before they actually made the toadstools numb before ripping them out from their surroundings.
"Ve..Ro...Vero.. Torpeooo..Viro Torpeo.." He repeated his voice shaky after the other. But finally understanding how she had pronounced it he gave it another go Viro Torpeo.." Then it came to him. What if someone said the incantation wrong, would there be a way for them to know,or would the mistake just happen without the wand holders knowledge.
"Professor..What if someone were to say it wrong..Would there be any indication as to know that you,did it wrong?I mean..If we do it wrong,is there some sort of magical sign that will tell us we did it wrong?"
Sarah scribbled the notes down quickly as an overwhelming feeling of dread hit her like a wave. Oh no! Did she remember her dragon hide gloves? As she finished copying down "Viro Torpeo" she slid her hand into her bag, rummaged around, and pulled them out. Whew, close one! She regained her composure, set her wand down on the table in front of her, cleared her throat and practiced the incantation in a clear, assertive voice along with the class. "Viro Torpeo... Viro Torpeo... Viro Torpeo."

Biting toadstools?!
Is that what they're going to plant or harvest or whatever it is today? Jonathan blinked and just sat there. GULP. If there's one think he doesn't like, its plants that can move. Last time he encountered one was when he was with Kurumi. Boy, did he finally had that exercise of running and catching them. Kudos to Kurumi though, she caught more than he did. What?! Jonathan doesn't have a green thumb. He's just hoping that he'll pass his OWLs in Herbology this year. Yup.
Jonathan kept listening to the professor and the more she described those plants, the more Jonathan got worried. They have fangs? They feed in flesh but not human flesh. Another GULP. Okay, so today they'll be planting the toadstools, biting toadstools, fangs.
Further more instructions were given. Jonathan sure was ready--- well his equipment was. And with the professors coaching, Jonathan went along. Viro Torpeo."Viro Torpeo."was that correctly said?
Ira did as instructed. She repeated the incantation "Viro Torpeo, Viro Torpeo, Viro Torpeo..."
"Why do we need to harvest fangs of a biting toastool? Do we need their venom or something?" She fished out her dragonhide gloves and wore them."What happens if the pronunciation of the spell is wrong? I mean, what is the other effect, professor?"Ira was curious to learn. She found it exciting to actually perform her first practical in the first class itself.
Fantastic! They were studying biting toadstools after all! Eino wrote down down the charm and a few additional notes, wishing he would have learned this spell much earlier. It sounded very helpful and he would be able to use it in a variety of occasions, including on himself if he was ever injured. So they were going to bewitch the plants, then remove the two largest fangs from them? Of course, they couldn't remove all of their fangs otherwise they wouldn't be able to chew their food, so they wouldn't be able to eat, and would die, but one thing he didn't understand, so he raised his hand and asked.
"Professor, are the two largest fangs more valuable than the rest? If yes, how so and why?" He would imagine that the two largest fangs were the ones the toadstools used to cut off the flesh while the others were mostly intended to chew it, just like humans and most animals.
After lowering his hand he proceeded to practice the incantation for the spell. "Vee-row Tor-pay-oh, Viro Torpeo, Viro Torpeo." He said chant-like with the rest of the class, until the pronunciation sounded as correct as possible.

Sort of like dentistry.
"You are to repeat the incantation after me." She paused, then flicked her wand at the board.
"Viro Torpeo", she said in a loud clear voice. "Incantation only."
"Viro Torpeo."
OOC: Practice the incantation only. We will practice the wand movement shortly before continuing with the activity.
So those were Biting Toadstools, she thought. While the class was giving out their ideas she did not gave her answer for her uncertainty and also because of her curiosity. She was looking intently at the toadstools when Professor Bentley announced that they were going to yank out the fangs of those creatures. Good thing she always brings her Dragon Hide Gloves with her.
But oh, poor little things. They would be taken their primary assets. Not that she cares a lot but as they are Biting Toadstools then it must be necessary for them to have those fangs. Yet, it was part of their lesson.
So, time for incantations. "Numbing Charm huh ? This should be easy enough." she silently muttered. She read the incantation on the blackboard first. And then slowly mumbled it, "Viro Torpeo." she breathed. "Viro Torpeo." She kept on saying the incantation until she got the right pronunciation.

They were going to be doing what?! Kourt wasn't very sure that she was going to enjoy this class. First Herbology lesson and they were at the risk of being injured? Not very much, but still....She had a feeling the nurse would be busy after the completion of this class.
Wide eyed, she stared at Professor Bentley as she explained what they were to do, and then instructed them in the proper incantation. There was certainly no wasting time here.
Though a bit of excitement was sparked at the thought of using her first bit of magic, it was overlaid with uncertainty about the collection of the fangs.
Regardless, she should do as she was told; wouldn't want to get points taken away for not participating in class.
With that decided, she looked up at the board and quietly spoke the words, repeating them over and over again. They sounded foreign to her, but that was to be expected.
Orchid was shocked. She had never seen more than a picture of a biting toadstool before, they didn't look that harmful, but I guess that's why they can't actually cause any serious damage to you. Wait - we're going to be WHAT?! Oh snap! "Well that should be interesting." She mumbled to Lauren. Wonder how many people will get bitten during that project. She thought as she heard the incantation and started practicing the pronunciation. "Viro Torpeo...Viro Torpeo...Viro Torpeo." She repeated. "Professor, does this charm work for all things? Or can you only use them on small objects?"

Sometimes Destiny felt like the Professors only made them go to class so they could do their dirty work. Really! Why was she going to have to learn how to rip out the teeth of a toadstool? Why would she even be near a toadstool!? Ugh..
Pulling her parchment closer to herself once more, she copied down the incantation of the numbing charm. "Viro Torpeo. Viro Torpeo. Viro Torpeo." That was shockingly easy. Usually those spells were hard to pronounce. Like herbologically. She still couldn't pronounce that word.
"Professor!" She had a very good question. "Does this charm only work on toadstools?" Or like.. could she use it on Carter's legs?

Interesting lesson this would be. Harvesting the fangs of biting toadstolls. Quite carefully Isabelle peered at her biting toadstoll. Yes, those fangs did not look to pleasant at all. Good thing she was smart and had brought her dragonhide gloves.
Clumsly, Isabelle tried to withdraw her wand from her pocket. But her dragonhide gloves made it hard so she decided to quickly slip one off, grab her wand, then slip it back on again. Proud with herself she began practicing the incantation. "Vee-row tor-pay-oh. Vee- row Tor-pay-oh," she said sounding it out very carefully to make sure she got it right. "Viro Torpeo, viro torpeo, viro torpeo," Isabelle practiced very carefully.
Seren listened intently as the students made their suggestions, guessing at what the curious 'stools were. "Talking toadstools, no... Fly Agaric, no ........... Amantia Muscaria, no.......Poisonous, no.... Leaping, no."
And finally....
"Biting toadstools! Correct!"
Seren turned to give the 'stools an appreciative look. They really were magnificent.
"Now don't be alarmed, these toadstools - while they do feed on flesh, they don't have near enough of an appetite to take a chunk out of you. The worst injury you get is a little uncture or a scratch.... But that's why you have you dragon hide gloves with you." She eyed them all. They did remember to bring them, did they not?
"Viro Torpeo", she said in a loud clear voice. "Incantation only."
"Viro Torpeo."

They were going to take the fangs OUT! Why?! That would be painful to the toadstool. Even if Kennedy didn't like the idea of touching them, he didn't agree with them being in pain. Gosh, he sounded like such a softy. He payed close attention as to what they had to do and the boy slumped his shoulders in relief. The toadstools weren't going to feel pain after all. Softy.
Vi......WHAT?
Oh sweet mother of pudding, was that even a word...like an English word? He supposed not. Wizards had weird words, some that he couldn't even pronounce, but this was not the time for him to complain.
At first, Kennedy tried pronouncing it without looking at the blackboard. "V-Vir...Viro...Tor..Torrrrpedo. Viro Torpedo!" Yeah, that sound right...right?
WRONG!
He reddened when he read the pronouncination on the board. N'aw man! He said wrong, the worst part was that he said it out loud. Pfft. "Vi...ro...Tor...peo..." Hehe! It wasn't torpedo. "Viro Torpeo." He grinned to himself when he accomplished saying the word correctly. "Viro Torpeo. What's the name of the Charm? Viro Torpeo." Oh yeah, he knew how to say it and it made him feel cool.

Jez was itching to actually start casting spells - they hadn't even done that in Charms yet - but she realised the importance of learning the incantation. "Vero Torpeo," she muttered. "Vee-row Tor-pay-oh." Best to say it in parts when learning. "Vero Torpeo."
Jez was secretly thrilled that she'd gotten the answer to Professor Bentley's question right. Biting Toadstools! Easy!

No? They really were biting toadstools?
...Oh Merlin.
Why was she taking Herbology again?
But Vashti clearly couldn't back out now, so she'd just have to deal with the evil biting toadstools. And make sure she wore her dragonhide gloves the entire time. Maybe she could borrow an extra pair too for some added safety. Yeah, that sounded good.
Because apparently they were going to be "harvesting" their teeth. Fangs. But on the bright side - sort of - at least they got to learn a new spell - the Numbing Charm. Because apparently the evil mushrooms could feel and stuff.
"Vee-row tor-pay-oh," she said slowly, sounding it out. "Vee-row tor-pay-oh... Viro Torpeo." Once she thought she had it, she quickly scribbled it down into her notes.

Biting toadstools! Ashley tilted his head and peered at the plants again, waiting to see of any of them grew restless and started to snap or growl or generally look menacing and like they wanted to bite. Maybe they only did that if you touched them. Well, he was very glad he had brought the proper equipment, getting down to taking some notes before looking up again to pay attention.
A numbing charm. That sounded useful. He sat up and started to practice the words to get them right, viro torpeo, knowing that how they were said was very important.
"You are to repeat the incantation after me." She paused, then flicked her wand at the board. "Viro Torpeo", she said in a loud clear voice. "Incantation only.""Viro Torpeo."
"We are going to be doing WHAT?!" Jayden thought to herself, looking at the fungus she paled, freaking inside. "Viro Torpeo, Viro Torpeo, Viro Torpeo..." She repeated aloud, over and over again. She knew she had to say it correctly, one slip up and she could be toadstool brunch..."Professor, what potions are the fangs typically used for?" Jayden asked politely while rifling through her bag for her gloves.
