Default HoM: Lesson One

As you enter the History of Magic classroom you notice that shockingly nothing has been moved around or changed. Each desk has been left in exactly the same state it had been in the year before. However, a piece of parchment is left on each of the desks.

Up at the front of the classroom Professor Scabior leans on the front of his desk, and is lazily pointing to a large note, that is neatly written on the board behind him.

Quote:
Please write your name, year and house on the parchment. Each parchment is charmed to turn into a name plate so once you are finished lay it back on the desk.

Jez raised her hand. "A lie. I ate three apples a day for the first six years of my life and I still had to see the Healers for injections. I was kind of hoping the apples would give me a force-field or something." So, not to be taken literally, obviously. "But I think it means that if you take care of yourself and eat healthily, then your chances of getting sick, and consequently having to see a Healer," not a nice experience, "are lowered." Or you could just make sure you take the right potions all the time. Hey, it worked for Keegan!

Penny had been taking notes, and every time a question was asked she did have an answer, but someone had already said it before Penny got the chance too..

She thought about the saying 'An apple a day, keeps the healer away'.... it sounded familiar to her though..

Then realised that there was a saying just like that one in the muggle world too...
'An apple a day, keeps the doctor away'..... Penny thought the two saying meant the same thing.
Putting her hand in the air, Penny decided to answer now while she got the chance.

"Professor, it basically means if you eat your fruit and vegetables everyday, then your less likely to need a healer - or doctor in the muggle world, where they have a similar saying"...

It was common sense really!

Urg. Wrong history facts. That just made Everett want to hit his head against a wall. "Good expressions. Merlin's heard, and in the name of Merlin are both used to express surprise or anger. But Miss DeSantis, Merlin was not the first wizard. He is just one of the most famous wizards." Even more famous than Harry potter.

"Oh..." Pixxi's mouth opened and closed like a fish on land. She knew Merlin wasn't the first wizard. She had just been caught up in the moment of excitement to answer a question, and as she did so she lost her head. "I'm sorry..." she almost whispered while looking down on her desk.

SPOILER!!: Kaos.Doodles

"So. I was given a number of good idioms or if you rather expressions. There are more like, I'm so hungry I could eat a hippogriff, and time is galleons, but that's okay." He paused. Write. Quickly, as to make sure the Professor knew she wasn't stupid or didn't like the subject, Pixxi pulled out her ink bottle and parchment and started writing down everything the Professor said.

When answering the new question, Pixxi was more cautious. She didn't want to make a fool of herself again, and she was quite sure students around her had supressed giggles. Not that she really cared, because this was nothing she would be embarrassed by usually, but this was the first lesson in History of Magic, a subject she really liked and was interested in.

Slowly, she raised her hand and carefully chose her words, "'An apple a day, keeps the Healer away' is something my mum used to say to me when I was little. I think it means that... If you eat healthy, your body stays strong and... You don't get sick." She didn't want to explain more in case she was wrong.

Blink blink.

Staring at some of these people as they gave their answers, Evelyn couldn't quite tell when some of them would stop talking. How in the world did they know so much about apples? Why would anyone NEED to know that much? It was an apple. It was healthy. It tasted good. It made people NOT hungry. That was all that one needed to know.

"Apples are rather healthy food..." she said slowly after raising her hand, tearing her gaze away from Cookie Girl. What was she saying again? "And most of the time people feel healthy if they eat healthy foods so there would be no need to visit a healer, unless you're allergic to...apples..." If that was the case, then they probably shouldn't eat apples.

Louisa's jaw dropped open but she quickly closed it and wanted to protest... when he took another five points.

WHATWASHEDOING!

She frowned, folded her arms and sank in her chair. She wanted to jump on the man and... do something. Because she was listening. She'd been raising her hand ever since the bloody class had started! Looks like someone was getting OLD. Hmph!

....

She was still fuming and biting her tongue and thinking why the heck did that happen? He could've said that it was not the kind of expressions he needed. It wasn't like she called someone a mudblood. She was a mudblood.

Besides, Louisa had been into a food fight AND managed to get away while the others got detention so... what happened? Mmm?

Using all of her will to push the bitterness to the back of her mind, the girl looked at the board slowly and stared at the words.

Looking at the professor next, blank cold stare, she raised her hand. "I think the bigger meaning of this expression.." Emphasizing on the last word so he knew she DID pay attention and was aware of the word, "..is to encourage humans to consume natural food instead of processed one." Pause. "And demonstrate that the former keeps you healthy while the latter could get you sick more often."

Violet smiled a bit happy about the teachers praise then thought about the expression she had used raising her hand. "I believe that phrase means that when you do healthy things such as eating apples there is less likely reason to go to the doctors…err I mean healers because you are eating healthy and not eating food bad for you and making yourself sick. Which in my opinion is true I don't eat very healthy and get sick not so often but I realise if I were to eat healthier it would probably be less and also you don't hear about people over eating healthy food and having to go to the hospital for stomach aches or things like that…at least not very often."

"Yes! Merlin's Beard and In the name of Merlin are expressions that are used to show outrage or shock. Galloping gargoyles also falls under that." Everett nodded. Correct!

Clearly this one had some kind of school pride. "Absolutely correct, and very good interpretation. It is actually stated in some sources that, that in fact is Hogwarts motto because that was the only thing that Salazar Slytherin and Godric Gryffindor agreed on together, with out any arguments." Of course that could be debated but everything could be. Everett nodded at her. Perhaps taking away the points made some people smarten up?

Or it could have been the head girl's glares.

"Correct Miss Hollingberry." Although, he had hoped that she would have explained a little further. "The basic meaning of that expression is to do something that causes a lot of worry to other people." She seemed to be in some sort of shock? Oh well

"Yup! A common one. Basically meaning to hold on or relax, could also mean, slow down? Or even wait for an explanation." Professor Scabior nodded. Right.

Professor Scabior glanced at the girl for a few seconds before finally opening his mouth. "Five points from Ravenclaw for using such a disrespectful and derogatory term in class." He said loudly, still looking at the girl. THAT wasn't needed. At all. They were talking about nothing of the sort. "And another five for not paying attention in class. But Miss DeSantis, Merlin was not the first wizard. He is just one of the most famous wizards." Even more famous than Harry potter.

Well..that was one you didn't hear every day. "Yes! That's an expression as well. Similar to Merlin's Beard, but less popular."

Everett sighed. Then blinked. Then shook his head. "Not quite...nice try though." He had never heard that one. And he doubted it made any sense.

"Yes! I suppose- actually yes. That can be one. In the sense of losing something valuable but learning a lesson because of it, or something along the lines of that." You got what he meant, yeah? Yeah.

"Yes. Not only is that bad luck. But you just never know what might happen, and that is exactly what this expression is trying to say."He nodded his head.

"You are as correct as the sky is blue." That meant really correct. Yeah. Hopefully he got that.

"Good! Perfect. This one is usually used by mothers or females, or even grumpy old men but yup. The meaning is pretty basic; there being no room, in a room." Which completely defeated the point of a room.

Another rarely heard one! Good job. "That's right Mr. Starr. That saying basically means that it's better to have a small advantage than a greater one." Everett didn't really believe in this saying but, it was there nonetheless.

This girl. With the heart on her name plate. Everett nodded slowly, the words forming in his head. "You see Miss Greingoth, that really wouldn't be considered an expression or an idiom. That is actually a quote- by Albus Dumbledore so a really good quote. But still a quote. You can basically tell because there is no deeper meaning to the words. They said what's right there. Don't dwell on dreams." Although not all expressions were more complicated most of them were, and for most the idea behind it wasn't so obvious.

Don't die. Oddly enough this was the SECOND time around he was hearing this. "Hm. Yes but again, there is no deeper meaning other than don't die. You wouldn't hit your thumb on a chair and yell DON'T DIE. It just wouldn't work." Really, he would have to have a word with Tate.

Professor Scabior sighed. "Well...yes..but I guess no. But yes. It is used often but personally I hate this so called expression. It dates back to the idea that wands made out of elder are really difficult to handle and therefore their owners don't do well. The only time you would be able to use this would be when you are talking about an elder wand but..but other than than you can't. But it still is a saying in the sense that...people still use it. I guess it's more like a myth." He shrugged. Really..sometimes things were always black and white. Sometimes there was a grey area, especially when it came to History more so than subjects like Charms.

"Very well said! Most likely the unicorn will never like him because it is a man but.." He shrugged. He didn't know too much about unicorns but he had heard the expression a lot.

Everett grinned then clapped his hands. "Yes. Perfect. And you see this expression is one I love because it seems like it was made for people around your age. With all your insults and taunting of one another." Smirk. What? It was true.

"Yes! Another good example of something a student would use. Basically that expression just means that someone seems normal, other than they are a bit dumb." Adults could use it too. He had heard many of them use it, just to sound less cruel.

Everett sighed then let out a breath. Really? How....would he explain this? Oh yeah. "That's more like a quote. But it can be an expression...if you relate it back to your enemies and relate it to accepting and whatnot." Huh. Yeah it could work. But it was still a quote. He nodded.

Huh. "Well..that could work." He grinned. He had actually never heard of that before! "Like saying the Ministry robs from Weasleys just to pay Malfoys....yes! You could be the creator of a whole new expression." Look! History in the making right now!

"Quote. By a Mr. Albus Dumbledore. You can't use it in everyday language and make it make sense. It would be more like giving advice. Just a quote, not an idiom." He nodded.

"Good! And the meaning behind that basically is hippogriffs are like wizards. They have their own minds. You can't force them to do anything. And you can basically substitute that for anything. You can't force anyone to do anything they don't want to do." The Professor nodded once again.

"If you are using it in the sense of just talking about a wand then it is a quote. If you are talking about...looking deeper like explaining if you care for your friend then they will care for you? Then yes! A good expression." Sometimes it was really in the eye of the beholder.

"Perfect. Basic meaning; if something is done its done. You can't take it back, because chances are you don't have a time turner so jus go and fix it." It was a good one.

"YOU!" Everett said pointing to the boy. "I shall come back to you in a bit."

Everett clicked his tongue. Huh. "That's more of a Muggle expression but it works. Basically saying that you are better off not getting into any problems then trying to fix them once you go get into them."

-----

"So. I was given a number of good idioms or if you rather expressions. There are more like, I'm so hungry I could eat a hippogriff, and time is galleons, but that's okay." He paused. Write. This down. "As you all know, everything has history behind it. All of these expressions have a story behind why they were created. Since it would be extremely dull for me to go through all of them, I have decided to just talk about my favourite one. That that would be a variation of the one that Mr. Watson said."

Professor Scabior pulled out his wand once again and tapped it on the board, right beside the list in big bold letters was a simple saying.

An apple a day, keeps the Healer away.

"Now, let's get your brains working. What do you lot think this means? And also, what does it mean to you personally? " Personally as in, do you think its true? False? Only lies that your mum has told you?

OCC: calling it a day for now. class will start back tomorrow at 4pm EST sharp (and by sharp this time I mean SHARP)

Adam scribbled down some of the other sayings that the students had offered, but wrote the one Professor Scabior put on the board a bit bigger and underlined it. Ahh...An apple a day keeps the healer away...that was actually pretty close to a muggle expression..hmm...

"In a literal sense it teaches that if you eat at least one apple a day, it will keep you healthy enough that you won't need to go to the healers. In the 19th century, at least in a muggle concept, the saying probably was meant to help factory workers living in the horrific city conditions in Europe during the 19th century," Adam offered. That made sense yes? "There were so many diseases and malnutrition circling, that this was probably a small step towards encouraging people to eat healthier. Personally I don't think the statement is true entirely on its own, but when put into a larger scheme it can be true. I think the saying could be broadened to mean eating healthily will help keep the doctor away, but obviously you'd need to eat more than just an apple a day to remain healthy."

"Um, to me an apple a day keeps the doctor away is perposterous cause I am alergic to apple but I know what they mean. Eating healthy is a good thing. It helps keep us healthy as long as don't eat anything we may be alergic too or eat unhealthilly. Both will definately have you going to the healer quite often", Nathan responded with his hand raised high ending with a smirk.

Sage perked up a bit after reading the saying Professor Scabior put up on the board. She knew of this saying. Her mum would tell her it all the time when she was younger and refused to eat the healthy, and yucky, food on her plate. At first Sage had been confused, why would she want to keep the healers away, they were nice people. Her brother had explained that their mum just didn't want Sage getting sick.

Sage raised her hand before giving her thoughts on the saying,

"It kinda means eat healthy foods so you won't get sick. My gran would would say something a bit different though.... Eat an apple on going to bed, And you'll keep the Healer from earning his bread." Sage recieted back to the professer. Sage wasn't sure why some people didn't like History of Magic, she was enjoying it so far!

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Jory raised his hand and gave his answer.
"Well, apples are considered a fruit very good for heath. I think apples were used in that saying -though another healthy fruit or food could have been used- to mean that eating healthy foods keep you fit and you would not have to be visiting the doctor/healer unnecessarily,'' the young Huffie said. "I agree with the saying since eating right can help as you older.''

Jesifur thought about the expression.

An apple a day keeps the healer away.

She raised her hand when called upon she said,"To me that expression means to eat healthy in general, eating whole foods is way more healthy for you than eating junk foods. The more wholesome food you eat the less likely your chances are to need a healer."
Hoping that would suffice she went back to taking note on the other things said.

Justin finally was able to participate in the discussion and he wasn'y about to miss out on this one opportunity. So, up shot his hand , " Professor Scabior, it is a literal translation. Apples are good for you. They're packed with fiber and other imoprtant vitamins. Eating an apple a day can stave off scurvy . "

Isobel raised her hand for that one. "Well apples are healthy, and healthy people generally don't need to see the Healer." That was what she thought it meant, even if she had said that specifically.

Nessie raised her hand.

"I think it's just a saying parents use to make their children eat fruits and vegetables. Their's no actual base on it, but they were invoking fear on the kids by saying that if they don't eat fruits and vegetables they'll have to go to the doctor." Nessie then layed back in her chair and listened to the other people speak, all the while she was taking notes.

It sure felt good to be proven correct, it made Kimalia happy to have such a handsome professor clap for her answer, she did her best to keep her smirk small, especially after hearing a Ravenclaw students lose 10 points. Oh mum would have a fit if she knew what Kimalia was thinking of her old house.

"An apple a day, keeps the Healer away.." Kimalia swore she heard that expression somewhere, though it wasn't Healer.. Hm. Probably from her muggle primary school, but oh well. Now she had to figure out what it meant. Kimalia rose her hand, "Well, apples are delicious.. maybe it's like a bribery if you give a Healer an apple, they would see so reason to-" Oh no, no, no.. That wouldn't make sense at all! Kimalia blinked in surprise, what was she saying?! "Wait, that's not right, since Healers are the best at curing people, perhaps it's just a reminder to keep eating an apple so you wouldn't need one?" Kimalia felt herself warm up, she was regretting mentioning the word "bribery" in an expression that was meant to be used as advice.

Lucy looked around the others who were saying the answers. Lucy had the same thing going on in her mind. Well, maybe that was true she thought. Raising her hand she said "Professor, It means that we should eat an apple everyday so that our health is good as apple contains many vitamins that are need for our body to keep it fit and fine. And, if we don't eat it, then we would have to go to various process that the healer gives us to get out body fit and fine again?" she said and brought her hand down.

Man, Damon thought, he had only been trying to lighten the mood with his joke. This Professor didn't like them obviously. He didn't really care about the points though. Damon hadn't really been paying attention to the class until he heard the teacher quote his mother. He paled.

"An apple a day, keeps the healer away."

Damon leant forward and gritted his teeth, trying to keep the tears in, hoping nobody had noticed his reaction.

Before he had the chance to realise what he was doing he said, "It's a saying that was created for parents to say to their kids. I mean what child likes a healer? It's a lie. Yes, typically an apple is healthy, good for you, but in the end it isn't going to prevent illness or death. If you get ill, you get ill. It's inevitable. You can't not be ill for your entire life. Even if you do eat an apple every day, it isn't going to cure you, make you healthy for the rest of your life. So I hate to pop anyone's bubble but it's just a saying, nothing more. It didn't save her." He stopped. Did he really just say that out loud?

He grimaced, he really needs to learn to keep his mouth shut.

Blink.Blink. Was this even a question?, Gwendolyn told herself, trying not to stare at the Professor. An apple a day, keeps the Healer away, she kept repeating in her head. It's kind of catchy, though... Now... let's see- I should say something smarter than just 'apples are healthy'. Or- why not? Better than nothing, the girl decided, raising her hand. 'Apples contain Vitamin C-', she started saying, but made a short break. After a couple of seconds, she went on talking: 'That's good for the immune system. Aaand...do something that reduces cholesterol' Or so I've read in some muggle book. The only muggle book I ever read, actually...

'This is kind of true. But not entirely... Not ONLY apples can keep you healthy', the young Ravenclaw said. 'Professor? I'm not sure about this... but wasn't any fruit that was round and grew on a tree considered an apple?A looong time ago, of course' Duh, Gwendolyn... this is history class. That implies ancient stuff...

Evelyn had been listening to alllllll the other answers as she twirled her quill and stared at her notebook, perhaps drawing a few things here and there around her notes, but she was mostly listening to the Slytherin answers.

They were behaving. So far. It was only a matter of time though before one broke the good streak...

...

Like this one.

Looking over to 'Mr. Bennett', Evelyn frowned even more as he gave his answer. That was true, all of it, and she was a tad confused on what the 'didn't save her' part was about, but a shorter and less dramatic answer would have been just a bit more suitable. The expression about the apple must of hit a nerve on the kid or something.

Sitting up in her seat, the Slytherin seventh year cleared her throat, louder than usual, as she STARED at him now. Keep it in youngster! Keep it in until the end of class. It wasn't long now.

Violet had raised her hand and spoke when it was her turn. "It's true in a way--apples, like many fruits, are really good for you. But if you only ate apples every day, and ignored other fruits and vegetables, then you would be missing out on things. And no matter how healthy you eat, eventually you will get hurt or sick and need a Healer for something."

Professor Scabior pulled out his wand once again and tapped it on the board, right beside the list in big bold letters was a simple saying.

OCC: calling it a day for now. class will start back tomorrow at 4pm EST sharp (and by sharp this time I mean SHARP)
Hmmmm....August had heard the muggle version of that saying many times before and since a Healer was just the Magical comparrison of a Nurse or Doctor, the Gryffindor assumed it meant the same thing.

After raising his hand, August spoke to the Professor, which he REALLY liked so far. "Professor, I personally don't believe the saying refers to eating an apple specifically each day keeps you away from Healers but the fact that if you eat healthily you are far less prone to sickness. And for the most part I think it is true. Well as long as you rule out diseases that aren't controlled by good eating habits."

Eris had to repress the urge to let out a laugh, the back of her hand flying to cover her mouth. There was no way an apple a day was going to keep her away from the healer. Well, she didn't get hurt too often, but an apple doesn't protect you from backfiring spells and jumping off trees now does it?

And if there was one that does, she was going to find this apple.

What if there WAS one? The professor might be leading up to- ...ah....but this is a history lesson, if such existed....the apple is probably just as gone as the Book of Mysteria.........

The young witch sighed inwardly at her thoughts before deciding to answer using them.

Raising her hand she gave a shot at the answer, " Same as what most people are saying, That eating an apple a day will keep you healthy enough so you don't have to visit the healer....but it is false, cause last time I checked apples can't save you from spell errors and broken bones." the little tomboy was sure to put some emphasis on 'last time I checked' with an almost suspicious air to her voice, because really, she wanted there to be some amazing apple out there.

"...Other than that....it's true about keeping you healthy...."

And now Eris craved an apple.

A ship in harbor is safe — but that is not what ships are built for.

Haha. That is a cool motto!

Victoria hopped that would work on her. But unfortunately apples don't help travel sicknesses. Boo.

"It means that eating apples is really good for your health. Eating apples daily keeps you good health which would let you avoide seeing the healer." answered Victoria after raising her hand.
