Default DADA: Know Your Spirit Guardian

The first floor was... certainly busier in a different way than Professor Schirmer's own usual haunt of the third level. Less injured children she supposed, and more Dash. She wondered if the professors of the first floor were more social as a result and made up her mind to befriend the healer. Third floor solidarity.

The classroom she'd chosen for the defense lesson had been one of her favourites as a student, and the tall blonde woman was a little bit dismayed to see how dusty and unused it was. Really, Hogwarts was it so hard to keep yourself clean? Even with elves that were off doing goodness knew what? A few quick charms and minutes later the room was sparkling.

Literally.

Unlike most of the Defense rooms, this one featured bright windows that allowed the light to stream in, diffused with colours and generally giving the room a bright and happy feel. The view looked out over the lake. There were no desks or chairs in the room and even the professor took a seat on the ground, waiting there with her feet tucked up comfortably beneath her for the students to arrive. She had a stack of books next to her and looked serene, if a bit distant.

When it was time, she charmed the doors to open, and greeted the students as they begin to file in.
ooc: the lesson will begin approximately 7.5 hours from the time of this post I'm simply opening it now so you can post arriving if you want to. The lesson has begun! Please act as if you were here all along if you haven't yet posted, latecomers will likely lose points. Please remember to follow Professor Schirmer's rules which can be found here.

SPOILER!!: the room looks something like this

In addition the room is now decorated for a party. Balloons and streamers are everywhere, there are tables set up with food and drink, and music playing to add to the festive feel.

Questions:
What do you know, or think you know, about the Patronus Charm?

Discuss amongst yourselves some famous witches and wizards and their known Patronus forms. Given what we know about them; their achievements, their experiences, what do you think their Patronus form indicates about their personalities?

For those of you who can cast a Corporeal Patronus and know what form it takes, see if you can match up how it fits your personality. Younger students, you can work with students who do have a known Spirit Guardian, or you can look up mine, which is a Dove, or Headmaster Tate's which is a Mountain Goat, or that of another adult you know, even some of the historical figures we were discussing.

"I want you to think of your happiest memory. Something strong enough that you can focus on it easily, maybe something that makes you smile. It doesn't have to be relating to love. If you have more than one, lucky you! You can experiment to see which is best. You don't have to share it if you don't want to, but feel free to put your hand up and share if you do.

----------------------------------

Levitation party activity! Click here for instructions. Read the post carefully and please take note of your classmates posts following this one too. Worth ten points!

edit: Activity still running, only please focus on the third part, AKA testing out your happy memory with a levitation potion.

The party is still going, you can help yourself to food or drink while we wait for a guest fetched via a patronus message. In the meantime the professor wants to know who can cast a patronus already and whether its corporeal or non-corporeal.

PLEASE be realistic with your character's abilities. The patronus charm is ADVANCED magic and little firsties should NOT be able to manage it. For the purposes of this class please pay attention to the following:

6th & 7th years: May be able to cast a corporeal or non-corporeal patronus, depending on character's skill level and experience. May learn how to do one or the other during the lesson.

5th years: May be able to cast non-corporeal patronus, depending on character's skill level and experience, very FEW and RARELY may a 5th year manage a corporeal patronus. May learn how to do one or the other during the lesson.

4th years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, very FEW and RARELY may a 4th year manage a non-corporeal patronus. May learn a non-corporeal patronus during the lesson.

3rd years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, may learn a non-corporeal patronus during the lesson. But its okay for them NOT to learn how yet too.

1st & 2nd years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, may learn an UNSTABLE non-corporeal patronus during the lesson. This means they might manage a slight whisp, but otherwise should NOT be able to cast a patronus. Its okay for them NOT to learn how yet too.

When we get to the spell casting aspect of the lesson, please note that anyone not being realistic may have their post edited or deleted, which I don't WANT to do but we're not all Harry Potter! For reference, Althea learned hers in 6th year non-corporeally, and managed a corporeal patronus in 7th year. Remember, just because your character might not be able to do it yet, it doesn't mean they never will!

As you saw, Professor Scabior came because I sent him a Patronus message. What do you think are the benefits of communicating via Patronus?

"Alright are you all ready to give it a go? Stand up if you are and make sure you give each other a bit of space. Wands out. The incantation is Expecto Patronum. Ecks-PEK-toh pa-TRO-num. You simply need to point your wand and focus really hard on that strong happy memory. Practice the incantation a few times to get the hang of it and then you may start. Those of you who can already manage it, please do encourage the younger ones and let them see how you do it. I have an activity for you too, that we'll start in a little while!"

Please note, I'm waiting to get an all clear regarding the recent Malware threat on SS before continuing, not because of any risk, rather because several people may be staying away right now and I'd rather be sure nobody is left at a disadvantage because they don't feel safe accessing the site. Expect that the lesson will continue on sunday. Everything is all clear Sorry for any trouble.

The latest instructions can be found in this post.

Selina was late. No, that was the understatement of the century; Selina was very late. Why did this always have to happen to her? She knew that setting an alarm clock was a brilliant idea, but she could never bring herself to actually set the alarm. It had something to do with the fact that she was not a morning person. A class at ten o'clock in the morning, in her book, was too early.

So she was running down the hallway, her a mess, eyes a blazing trying to get into the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom. Once she ran inside she must have made a screech sound on account of how hard she broke. Upon entering she rose her hand and said, "I'M HERE!"

She looked around the room and saw that Professor Schirmer was still admitting students and the lesson had, in fact, not begun. Her face heated up a bit and she looked at her Professor, "Hello ma'am. Um... I'll take my seat now."

Presley skipped into the defense room. This was definitely one of her favorite classes. She paused, however, when she actually noticed the room. It looked so...magical. There was no other word to describe this. "wow," she breathed softly. Still looking around in awe, Presley took a seat, closer to the front of the room, and pulled out her things. "Hello, professor." It was polite to greet your teacher after all, and even with the wonder of the classroom, Presley Black did not forget her manners.

"Good day Mr. Stonewall." Yes faces and names were coming together now.

She tilted her head to the side a bit when she saw Professor Schirmer sitting on the ground, but for some reason didn't question it. Perhaps that was an indication of the strong first impression that the woman had had on the fourth year - you just don't question what she does.

"Good day, Professor Schirmer," Kurumi smiled as she too took a seat on the floor and removed her textbook from the bag.
"And to you Miss Hollingberry." The professor answered as the girl sat down.

Jonathan walked inside and not many student had came yet. Was he that early? Jonathan was still amazed by everything though. The room looks so much bright with all the rainbow colors. Just when he was about to take a seat, he saw Kurumi and Marilyn. Early birds as always.

Looking at the professor, Jonathan gave a slight bow "Hello Professor" he smiled. Where was the DADA professor anyway? Why was Professor Schirmer teaching? he then took a seat on the floor.
"Hello Mr. Kim." She greeted, noting his reaction to the room as well as his good manners. Althea liked good manners.

Sitting down with her bag on her lap she waited for her friends to arrive.
"Hello Miss Salazar." She greeted the Slytherin.

He said as he approached the rest of the students. There were no chairs, which was good. That meant they weren't going to be writing, unless Professor Schirmer was cruel enough to make them write without writing desks. Eino was inclined to believe that wasn't the case, and that they would have a practical lesson, which made him extremely happy, and a little impatient. He dropped his backpack then took a seat right next to it as he waited for class to begin.
"Mr Uronen." She inclined her head gracefully in return. She liked that one. Polite and smart. Good combination clearly.

...

Hopefully? The professor raised one shaped eyebrow and managed not to snap at that. This was supposed to be a happy lesson and she didn't want any of the children to start it off feeling down from being told off.

"I believe that will depend on you, Miss Charlotte." Althea answered politely. Truly it would. Her lesson WOULD be interesting, thank you very much.

She started to make guesses on the topic of DADA today. "Would it be a practical lesson?"she thought to herself. She put her belongings onto the floor and stood besides the wall, acting quite uncomfortable since her friends have not come yet. So she have to wait and wait till the class began.

"Hello Miss Pevensie, do take a seat." The professor greeted.

The room was beautiful. As in VERY beautiful. The glass-stained windows printed the floor in different colours, right on top of Alyssa and Penny. Janice walked towards them.

Good save, she supposed, though it indicated that the young lady hadn't read the announcement.

"Miss Trewhella." She nodded a greeting.

Unlike most people, bright, happy rooms threw Sierra for a loop, and for a moment, she just wanted to slither back to the dungeons where everything was dark and damp.

No chairs either. Hmm. Noticing Professor Schirmer seated on the ground, Sierra also took a seat a considerable distance away. After that look the professor had given her at the snowman building competition, she wasn't sure how to react to the woman. Honestly, though, Sierra hadn't asked for the fate she'd been given.

Another look was earned by Miss Greingoth, this time for the lack of a polite greeting.

He smoothed his hands over the pockets of his robes and sighed a sigh of relief when his hand came in contact with a lump. The egg had been safely tucked in there the whole time.

Hmm...

Was he in the wrong classroom then? He was pretty sure he had gone up to the first floor. Then he realized, maybe Professor Schirmer was teaching DADA as well. Cool.

After finally getting situated on the floor, his legs crossed and back straight, the Gryffindor looked towards the blonde Professor as she mentioned they were ready to get started. Wonderful. He was still wondering why the Charms professor was teaching DADA but he wasn't one to ask these sorts of questions.

Oh a Patronus charm? He had read about those breifly in one textbook or another and had heard a few students talking about it just the other day. Raising his hand, August began to speak, "Professor, I read somewhere that the Patronus charm is a spell made up of very positive energy that deflects evil or bad things." Yeah, you know whatever it was that you fought against in Defense Against the Dark Arts. "Oh and I also heard a few seventh years talk the other day about what 'form' theirs took, so I guess they can be changed into more precise forms?" he said not entirely sure.

Well, sitting on the floor had distracted Stella enough from greeting the professor, or maybe it was just having Professor Schirmer teaching DADA that had thrown her. Either way, it seemed that the lesson had already started before she could focus on anything other than checking to make sure she had anything that might be needed for this lesson, and that her egg for Charms was still safely wrapped up in her bag as well. Both seemed good, so she'd looked up and raised her hand almost simultaneously. "The Patronus Charm is used for protection against particularly Dark creatures. Notably Dementors and lethifolds, but they can also be used to send messages to people and warnings," she said, thinking about her unicorn.

Oooh. DADA. Indiana liked this lesson, or what she had actually seen of it so far. So she was pretty excited to be having another lesson today. Indy really hoped that it would be fun, but Charms had been pretty epic, so she had a feeling that was going to be super fun. She listened intently to the professor, wanting to not miss anything that she said. Ooh. A patronous charm. Indy had read about that, not too specifically though. It looked hard, and she wasn't really about to try to master a charm that was really hard, not till she was older. But she kind of new what it was about. Indy raised her hand, and then she spoke. "The patronous charm protects from...." Now she knew this. She knew this. Ooh. It was those dark hooded people right? Were they even people. "Dementors. I think thats what they are called. Nasty dark hooded things...." People maybe? Indy smiled at the professor. That was okay right?

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Riiight, Professor SchurrMerr...he should really take a note on that. The Slytherin mumbled a apology as the Professor eyed him and after finding out he was in the right class he sat down on the ground and listened.

BAM

His hand shot in the air with him even realising it. He had heard about the patronus charm from his brother alot of times who likes the brag about it that he can do it. "A patronus charm is a positive source of energy and a protection against the dark arts, Professor!" He said as he shook his hand a little to caught her attention. "Each and everyone of us has a sort of spiritual animal guardian. It works when the caster thinks about something that is a happy peaceful thought for them." he lowered his hand because it started to feel weird. But his talking didn't stop. "My big brother has a panda which is soooo cute! i wanna cuddle it but i always fall through the white silvery smoke , which is not cool and..." blahblahblah

Bliiiiiink!

They were learning about the Patronus Charm today? Now she gets to find out what her patronus would be! YIPEE!

Ahem!

Back to the question. Kita raised her hand and said, "It's a charm that defends you from the Dementors." Which were totally SCARY! Or so she heard. "And, er, they act as a sort of protection." Had she already said that?

"Oh! Does it defend you from other creatures as well?" she asked, her hand in the air, "I heard something about Lethifolds..." ... Maybe she needed to calm down.

Patronus charm?

Was that's what they were learning? Gideon couldn't help but be amused and a little excited at the prospect. Sure it had been mentioned and shown in the defense club last term but this was a real live defense lesson. When the professor asked if anyone knew anything about it, he raised his hand to answer having seen it done a few times.

"The patronus charm is a spell to produce a patronus to protect yourself from a dark beings or to send messages," he said lowering his hand. "It can be anything from a small wisp to a mist in the form of an animal."

Maxwell raised his hand. "My mum told me about the Patronus Charm, she said it's like the guardian of your good emotions." Maxwell felt silly talking about something he didn't know much about. "I don't really know much else about them."

Orr smiled at Prof. Schirmer and raised her hand to give her answer, "I've read that the Patronus charm helps protect oneself using a positive happy energy."

At least that is what it said in the DADA book.

Maddy thought she knew. She read something about it a while back "Isn't it a charm used to communicate? when you conjure up the spell it creates an animal and the animal can be sent to people to deliver a message or something" Maddy answered. She remembered there was somethig else as well but wasn't quite sure of what that might be.

Alyssa was grateful that the Professor hadn't penalized for hugging Sierra even though, she had commented about that. So Alyssa chose to work even harder in her class. She thought about the question and then raised her hand. "Professor, a patronus charm is something that one conjures up using their wand and casting the Expecto Patronum spell to protect themselves against the dementor. The patronus is a form of energy created from within the person and it usually is in a form of an animal."

She listened to the girl's answer and nodded.

"Expecto Patronum is the incantation. We'll get to that."

"Unable and unwilling." She agreed with a smile. "That's a good way to put it."

"So a Patronus Charm is a difficult charm which requires a strong happy memory and dedicated focus in order to cast it. That sounds easier than it is and even for those of you who might manage it in a safe and comfortable classroom, its less simple when faced with the true fear a Dementor inspires." Althea spoke to the children at large.

"It can be used to fend off Dementors and Lethifolds, and also to communicate and pass messages on, as much of your will needs to be infused into its creation." Just reiterating things.

"A Patronus may be substantial or insubstantial.... known as corporeal or incorporeal. Most of you will not manage an corporeal Patronus, at least not until you are older, but that is no reason not to learn about it now." Right?

"The corporeal Patronus takes an animal form, relating to the personality and traits of its caster. You can refer to your textbooks for this next question. I'd like for you to discuss amongst yourselves some famous witches and wizards and their known Patronus forms. Given what we know about them; their achievements, their experiences, what do you think their Patronus form indicates about their personalities?"

Nate's jaw feel loosely open. "P-p-pa-pa..." he paused for a second, gathering his excitement, "...patronus?" he said, more to himself than anyone else. He raised his hand swiftly. "Well, Professor Glass, a Patronus is a force, really, that protects everyone around it by exerting positive energy. It is made up of said positive energy, and usually takes the form of an animal. They're also very useful in driving off dementors." Then he lowered his hand, trying to look as humble as he could. Nate knew very well that he could come off as haughty when excited. He couldn't wait to figure out what his patronus was!

Hmm. Indiana smiled at the professor as she thought about a famous witch or wizard that had good patronus. Oooh. Indy raised her hand with a smile. "I think I read somewhere that Harry Potter's patronus was a stag." Which was like really cute. "And that his dad was an illegal animagus, and his animagus form was a stag." How strange. "There is obviously a big experience related to Harry and his father, which would relate on patronus. I first thought maybe it would be a sad emotion, but I think maybe it was a happy one?" Because she was sure a sad emotion wouldn't make a good patronus. "Maybe it's kind of like showing that Harry had a bit of his dad in his personality."

Orr thought about it for a moment before raising her hand, "Well, Albus Dumbledore had a Phoenix Patronus. He is well known for being the headmaster of Hogwarts during the time of Lord Voldemort in the late 20th century. Since the story goes that he helped Harry Potter during his battles with Voldemort even after his death, it seems fitting that his Patronus was a phoenix."

Wait so.....That scary woman wasn't here?

Actually, Ellie'd much rather prefer the new DADA Professor to this woman.

What was worse was that apparently, they'd be attempting Patronuses. Yeah, well, not Ellie. She really shouldn't have come at all if she'd realized that was what the aim of this class would be.

The fifth year had only attempted a Patronus once. In her third year. Nothing happened. She didn't expect anything to, but still. She knew who she wanted to learn the spell from. And this woman took his place.

This was uncomfortable. For Ellie. And, in her opinion, Schirmer should be uncomfortable, too. That was why she was receiving glares. Again.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Daichi smiled broadly as the Professor mentioned that his brother had a good patronus. "Yes! but...i know it's a patronus but that doesn't mean i can't TRY to hug it right?" His eyes twinkled a little as he said that.

At the next question he fell silent and tried to think of an answer. But honestly, he never read about others patronus. The only patronus he knew where from his brother, a panda and father which is a wolf.

So, he grabbed his textbook and tried to find an answer. Flipping through the pages he finally stopped at the patronus section and read it. Resting his eyes on Ron Weasley's patronus he automatically raised his hand even though this was a discussion among the students themselves.

"This guy..Ron Weasley, his patronus was or is a Jack Russell terrier. Aren't those dogs very loyal to the people they like? And ..i don't know..maybe it reflects how Ron was because he was one of Harry Potter's best friends and would help him no matter"

They're also very useful in driving off dementors." Then he lowered his hand, trying to look as humble as he could. Nate knew very well that he could come off as haughty when excited. He couldn't wait to figure out what his patronus was!
Kurumi was just about to raise her hand when...she heard the Ravenclaw boy. "That's not Professor Glass," she said in a medium whisper. Poor kid, he was probably just nervous. She knew that she was her first year around pretty much every professor except for Professor Zookara - she really missed him. "Professor Schirmer is taking over the lesson today."

An honest mistake, but Kurumi hoped that her small correcting of the boy would put a stop to any sudden mood shifting that Professor Schirmer's current smiling persona.

She then turned her attention back to the Professor and thought for a moment. When Harry Potter had been mentioned, her hand lowered for a moment before it went back up straight in the air. "Kingsley Shacklebolt produced a Patronus in the shape of a lynx," she began. Really, feline Patronus' were something that intrigued her a lot, so they stuck with her in memory more than others. "The lynx has powerful eyesight and great abilities of stealth and cunning are formidable, so I suppose that all these traits would be reflective of the person who produces their Patronus. The powerful eyesight might not be literal, but could perhaps represent that Mr. Shacklebolt was a very watchful person. He is said to have been a very good judge of character, so you could say that this is also related - the ability to see people for who they really are."

So, they were learning about the patronus charm today? Leaning back on her hands, the Slytherin girl kept silent for the first question, mostly since everyone already jumped at the chance and said pretty much all there was to say about the cahrm, yet the second question...the variety of answers had her raising her hand. Though going through and choosing just one person and figuring out how their patronus relates to their personality in the minimal time before she was called on was the hard part. "The ex-Gryffindor Head of House and Transfiguration professor, Minerva McGonagall's patronus was a cat. Cats have been known to be mostly independent, though territorial, not to mention quite...sympathetic to friends and hostile towards their enemies. She was a Gryffindor after all." Yea, that said it all didn't it? Sorta.

Patronus charms... Eino had heard of them and had always wanted to try the charm, but never found enough time to do so. It wasn't an urgency after all, he didn't expect to run into any dementors or lethifolds, but it would be rather nice to know how to do so. Plus, he was eager to find out what his spirit guardian would be. Oh, he wanted a big, great dragon! The greatest of all dragons! He couldn't contain his excitment and enthusiasm, but he would have to... She wanted them to discuss. As any other Ravenclaw, except for Ellie maybe, Eino would be exceptionally eager to engage in a discuss... at any other time, but not now. No, now he wanted to practice! Nonetheless, he tried and raised his hand. "I am positively and undoubtedly sure that Merlin's patronus could be nothing other than a dragon! He was the greatest wizard to have ever lived, and so his patronus should reflect that!" Thus his patronus would be the greastest creature ever, duh.

Since he was pretty much bad at history of magic and stuff related to it, Josh had to remain silent when the professor asked about famous witches/wizards and their patronuses. Not that he did not know anything at all. Yet whatever he knew the people in the class had already mentioned...like...all of them.

However, still, there was one matter he wanted to ask about. It was not maybe directly about famous people in the past yet at least it was related to the forms that patronuses did take. ''Professor...if we are saying the patronuses are our guardians that have been formed by the positive energy of our powerful memories, does that mean a different memory or emotion caused by it might cause a different form or is it directly and only related to our personality?''

He hoped that had made sense. The case was a little bit confusing to him after all so he wanted it to be illuminated a bit. ''Also, i have heard many times before that love is more powerful than any other magic that exists. So, can we say a memory or emotion related to true love can make the strongest patronuses?''

No, he was not going to make it oh-so-obvious and stare at a certain she-snake right now.
