It was a bitter-cold morning. The wind whirled and howled, rustling the leaves on the trees violently. Admittedly it probably wasn't the best day to have a lesson on the Schooner, in fact it would have been more appropriate in the spring time. But... the students would survive.
As you board the main deck of the Schooner you are confronted with an unexpected sight. It had been transformed to look like a makeshift classroom. Small desks and chairs had been arranged in rows across the deck, facing the front where Professor Bentley was standing, writing on the small blackboard there. Surrounding her was a row of ominous looking ...fish tanks? covered with sheets. An eerie bluish-green light emanated out from behind the sheets, casting a strange glow across the first two rows of desks.
Situated slightly off to the side was the largest tank. It was tall and tubular.
Once she had finished writing her message on the blackboard Professor Bentley stood off to the side of the deck waiting to greet the students as they arrived. She was full of energy and excitement, but contained this in order not to scare the students away.

The weather is too cold for her to even think. Though, Aiden has no idea what is it in the tank. Perhaps gillyweeds? Shivering, Aiden stares curiously at the covered tank.

Well that was rude... not greeting her or acknowledging her presence. "Good morning", she said to the student nonetheless.
"Morning dear", greeted Seren as a particularly bright and bubbly Hufflepuff came onboard. She seemed delightful. Enthusiasm... brilliant!
And the students just kept coming. Seren was thrilled! "Morning", she greeted the young man.
Oohhh frosty reception from the Slytherin. Seren couldn't help but feel shunned.... "Good morning", she said cheerfully regardless of the students manners.
"And a good morning to you", replied Seren smiling as the girl adjusted her scarf to speak.
Seren nodded polietly and offered the Slytherin girl a smile. "Morning"
MMmm it was good to see the students curiously starring at the tanks. Hopefully they would find its contents as exciting as she did. "Good morning dear".
Ahh another enthusiastic student. This was lovely. "And a good morning to you too", she replied with a controled level of enthusiasm.
Oh how disappointing, no greeting?... manners seemed to be a weak point for some students. "Morning", greeted Seren in hopes of modelling appropriate behaviour. The girl did have a lovely flower in her hair.
Nodding as she greeted the students onto the main deck Seren smiled politely, "Good morning."
"Morning, welcome aboard" said Seren as she watched the student find a seat and fill out her card.
And this girl seemed to be a little out of breath... something about an alarm clock? Well yes that would help. "Morning, glad you could make it."
"Morning Master Carter", replied Seren as she watched the boy enter their makeshift classroom. He looked a bit blue... such a shame, he seemed to be such a nice boy at the feast. Oh what was that? Another flower? That was trully lovely. "Thank you for the flower Carter, it's lovely."
"Good morning dear", replied Seren as she observed the student take a seat... she didn't look too good. Sea-sickness perhaps?
"And a good morning to you", replied Seren brightly. It was nice to see fresh curious eyes bright with excitement.
Hhhmm Seren observed as a girl hurried onto the ship- clearly not in a good mood, and clearly forgetting her manners. "Morning", she said... a little bored of greeting students that didn't greet her back.
And another rude student... Slytherin... hhmm this was a trend by the looks of it. Perhaps she should have a word with Lafay...
Seren didn't even bother trying this time.
Ahh this was more like it, an enthusiastic Slytherin, clearly enjoying being out of doors. "Morning dear", chimmed Seren grinning at the girl and her salute.
"Good morning", replied Seren, pleased with how this girl ahd manners and greeted her... unlike some others..
Ahhh... Riley?... no greeting? Seren was a little disheartened, the boy had seemed so pleasant that day they had met in her office. She shrugged it off, thinking it may have been something out of her control... perhaps he got up on the wrong side of bed.
And with that Seren took another look down at her pendant watch... seemed as though it was time to get the lesson started. Some students were getting a bit restless by the looks of it. Striding briskly to the centre of the front of the deck, Seren took a stand in front of one of the tanks, the light glowing around her. "Good morning everybody, welcome to the first Herbology lesson of the term, I am so glad you could all make it."She gazed out at the sea of faces before her. Students... they were the future and here she was facilitating their learning. It was such a privelegde. "First of all I should formally introduce myself, my name is Professor Seren Bentley and I will be your Herbology teacher for the term. I have a wealth of experience in the area of Herbology, having spent a great deal of my professional life out in the wilderness studying a variety of magical and mundane plants. I have to goals for this term... the first is to provide you all with exciting and interrsting learning experiences and secondly to inspire you and help you to reach for your goals." Whatever they may be.
"Before we get started I must stress one key rule to you all...." Seren paused, taking the time to make eye contact with a number of students. "Safety... is first and foremost the most important thing you need to remember in this class. I trust you all brang your dragon hide gloves?... if not I have a few spares up the front."
And now on with the second most important part... the lesson.
Seren gestured around her at the ship they were on. "Now you're probably wondering why I've decided to hold the fist Herbology lesson on this ship.... and the reason for that is, its not every day we have this opportunity, and secondly it ties in quite neatly with out topic today."Gesturing at the sheet covered fish tanks behind her Seren moved onto the next feature of the lesson. The contents... "Now what do you think we might be looking at today?" she asked. Though really it was pretty obvious.
OOC: The lesson has now started, please to not post arriving to class from this point onwards- just pretend as though you were here all along. Any late comers will lose house points. Also chatting will not be tollerated during the lesson- please treat your Professor with respect.

Sierra sat in her seat, lounged back and eying the professor as she silently assessed the woman. She sounded pretty confident of herself, which Sierra really didn't mind too much, since they hadn't even had a Herbology class last school year. It was a welcome change to actually have a lesson. The second thing Sierra noticed is that the woman seemed so full of sunshine and happiness and hope for the future. It was almost nauseating, but again, Sierra was willing to overlook that.
What might they be looking at today? Hmm. Sheets covering a few tanks, from the looks of it, but she guessed that wasn't the right answer. Gillyweed was her first thought, but that seemed so overrated right now. "Algae?" she suggested, her hand in the air. It might make for a boring lesson, but maybe it was also used in some potions, which sort of sparked Sierra's interest. "...or gillyweed," she added as an afterthought.
Eino was at the edge of his seat by the time class began, and he was growing exceedingly excited to see the contents of the tank. When the professor asked the first question his hand shot up in the air. His initial reaction was to answer pirates, since they were in a ship, or maybe it was a treasure! He hesitated and quickly lowered his hand when he reminded himself that he was in Herbology class, not Muggle Studies or History of Magic. After thinking a brief moment his hand shot up in the air again. "Is it Panellus stipticus? Or perhaps Armillaria mellea? Omphalotus nidiformis? Omphalotus japonicus? Omphalotus olearius!?" He knew more about plants than he realized, and had to stop himself when even he couldn't understand what was coming out of his mouth. By the time he lowered his hand his heart was beating fast and in spite of the cool weather he was beginning to sweat.
"Is it possible that we will be working with Forget me nots" remembering the flower from the old tales her mom would read her as a child. Beautiful really. "Er the Myosotis sylvatica flowers?" she asked blinking and looking up to the front of the classroom. Boy she couldn't wait to see what they actually were doing today she was excited.

Gwen listened to the Proffestor asking what they would do today. Hmm...good one-you would expect me to notice that?, the girl thought. Really, obvious things didn't seem so obvious to her.
Think logically, she told herself. We are on a ship, the ship was underwater, herbology has to do with plantes, I think thet greenish thing that looks wierd in that corner of the ship is a plant, furthermore, plants live on this ship, the ship was underwater....so we shall talk today about plants that live underwater. Of course!
'We are going to study the plants that can live underwater?Like Hair Moss,Dwarf Spikerush or, eh...Algae?', she said.
Selina rose her hand at Professor Bentely's question and answered, "Selina Skylar, Gryffindor, Second year. Well ma'am perhaps we are studying the moss and overgrown fungi that has developed on this old ship from years of neglect and times at sea. Being in the water would foster the perfect environment for this type of plant life."

Ariadne was taking Herbology only because she wanted to know a bit about everything and she was a perfectionist, but otherwise, she hated plants with all her heart. Even more now, while seating in the gloomy ship and feeling the chilly November air. Nevertheless, Professor Bentley had just asked a question, and Ari was the type of student who couldn't help answering. She raised her hand and replied grumpily: 'We are probably going to study about some magical seaweed or something like that.' Yuck.

"Yes we will be looking at Gillyweed today... unfortunately no algae."
After all she couldn't imagine the students being too thrilled with looking at algae, nope, though some of them had their uses... perhaps they'd cover that another time.

Seren was slightly taken aback by the flood of ideas that was coming from the Ravenclaw's mouth. Very very enthusiastic mouth at that. She couldn't help but grin with anticipation.... but no... "No, I'm sorry we wont be looking at any of those this lesson, but I'll certainly keep them in mind for future classes."
A budding herbologist perhaps?

Seren nodded in agreement once again, "Yes, we will be looking at magical plants of the aquatic variety."
Seren peered around the classroom... The students had offered some really interesting ideas, and it appeared to interest them- she made a mental note to perhaps include them in another lesson.
"Today we're having an introductory lesson in magical water plants... I'm not sure how much you have been taught on this topic yet, so this is a bit of a feeler to see how much you know. Hopefully a lot of this material will be knew to you though."
But back to what she had for them today. She looked at the line of tanks, each a different shape to the next. Oh she had planned an interesting lesson for them- or at least she thought so. Then again it didn't take much to get her interested in herbology... she lived it. Uncovering one of the smaller tanks Seren peered down at the tangled knot of slimy greenish-grey seaweed. "Gillyweed", she said gesturing to the plant.
"What can you tell me about gillyweed?" she asked in general, testing the students underdstanding of the plant- after all they had probably already studied it at some point.
OOC: Ok guys and gals, I'm off to bed, I will resume the lesson in approximately 9 hours. When answering this question please only provide one snippet of information so that other people can get in with a different answer, that way you're not all repeating the same thing. Have fun, but remember the site rules and herbology rules when posting. Professor Bentley is still there, though I am not... also NO chatting... it is a lesson not a gossip-fest. Thank you!
Also... do not edit your posts to change your answers or anything. I will know if you did. *watches you all*

Thea swallowed. 'Gillyweed allows a person to breath under water for an hour. To do this however, you must eat the Gillyweed.' Thea flipped her dark hair behind her. ' It'll cause you to grow gills, and you'll get webbed hands and feet.' She grinned. That had made sense.. right?

Feeling her brain power seem to bubble up again and actually exist she decided to answer in a more elaborate of a fashion. "Gilly weed is Native to the Mediterranean areas - and it is a water plant that looks like a bundle of smiley or even soggy rat tails" not that she'd ever seen soggy rat tails.

Gillyweed? That's what they were learning about? If the Professor expected them to eat it and go swim in the lake, Evelyn would be ditching. She didn't eat it last year, and she wasn't going to now.
Answering the question however, she could do. "You turn into a fish when you eat it." Webbed feet and hands, gills...fish. Yea. "But apparently there is some debate about how long the effects of gillyweed lasts with salt water versus fresh water." Pfft, herbologists.
Eino was slightly disappointed that none of his guesses were being studied. He had never seen those plants before, only read about them, and it would certainly be exciting if they did. He was still curious about the glowing light, which occasionally stole his attention. Nonetheless, Gillyweed was just as exciting, at least according to what he knew. He shook his head to clear his thoughts and tried to focus. Gillyweed. "It was discovered by Elladora Ketteridge," He began with his hand raised, "but nearly a century later Beaumont Marjoribanks was the one credited for its discovery." He felt he would give a new bit of information since everyone had already described its main properties and purposes.

Arya HAD been discreetly looking for a place to push Chicken Girl off the ship, when the new Professor started going on about safety. Meh. She'd trip her later or something... when the professor wasn't looking.
Regretting not sitting beside Treyen, she glared at Destiny, looked for Ivory, all the while completely missing the first question. Oops! The professor got her attention again with the second question though. "Gillyweed tastes disgusting." Her hand went up. "But it's good if the aquatic situation calls for it and not the bubble head charm."

Oh, so the answer was gillyweed. She shrugged to herself and then watched as the professor uncovered one of the tanks, revealing the greyish-green look associated with gillyweed. Noticing this, Sierra decided to point out the common appearance of the plant. "It looks like a bunch of greyish-green rat tails," she pointed out, her hand raised in the air. Wow. How appetizing. Fresh rat tails, just in the perfect color to remind a person of puke. Ewww.

Amy put up her hand for the first time that lesson, she had her gloves and everything, but she still didn't particulary like Herbology, she always got covered in something manky, professor Amy nodded, it is used in a drink that lots drink, gilly water, so presumabley it only takes a certain amount to allow a human to breathe underwater, right?

As soon as he saw the fish tank, his first thought was mermaids. Wouldn't that be interesting?! But before he had the chance to get an answer in, the Professor had moved on and revealed that the lesson was about Gillyweed. Wow, that sounded a lot more boring than a lesson on mermaids. Hmpthh...
Jamie lazily put up his hand. "It's a weed that gives you gilly's. Ueh, I mean, gills." Easy mistake to make. The name of the weed gave out a false impression of what it actually was, anyway. Gillyweed. Why not Gillweed? The third year looked at the piece of weed that the Professor was gesturing down at. Looked so gross. Hopefully they wouldn't have to eat any to test out it's abilities.
Otherwise, he'd be outta there!

Gillyweed. Right.
Well, Helena had been close, when she said something about water plants. "The effects of Gillyweed, gills and webbing between the fingers and toes, last about one hour," she said as she raised her hand. Or at least something like that, about the Gillyweed. "It is also used for Gillywater," she mumbled, more for herself, because it wasn't quite related to the lesson. Juuust saying.
Large dark eyes roving over the tanks and the surroundings, Ivory tried to take it all in. It was a lesson on the ship!! Still a little giddy with excitement as she tried to make out what was inside the tank nearest hers, the Ravenclaw prefect almost completely missed the first question of the day.
Lowering her hand ruefully as it seemed everyone else had beat her to it, Ivory listened attentively now prepared to participate. Fiddling with her attendance card in her lap, Ivory glanced up blinking at the second question. Ooh, she totally knew something about Gillyweed but first...
Hearing her best friend's voice from a little in front of her, Ivory turned slightly in her seat to peer around some of the taller people hiding her. Catching Arya's eye, she gave her bright smile and wave before turning back towards the professor to raise her hand and put in add her two cents.
"It's a parasitic plant that feeds off the moisture and nutrients of a host plant and comes from the plant genus Cuscuta," She piped up with a smile. "But only Cuscuta oxy,"She had to pause here for a second as she tried to remember the exact species. It was on the tip of her tongue...what was it- Oh, right! "...oxygenium is considered Gillyweed when it is harvested in it's active form." Yeah, because if it was harvested when it was all dry and devoid of moisture it wouldn't do much good for swimming. "And while you can use the plant in its dormant stage for various potions," She added remembering a potions class from a few terms back."It's usually known for the gills and webbing it gives the person who ingests it." Which is what they were going to try out??? Maybe? Possibly? Please? Cue hopeful smile.

Yes. They were indeed going to learn about disgusting aquatic plants. How fortunate. The word gillyweed did ring a bell for Ariadne, but it was more related to history than Herbology. Not surprisingly, since history was the girl's favourite subject. 'Harry Potter used gillyweed to breathe underwater during the second task of the Triwizard Tournament in 1995.' the Gryffindor firstie replied, after having raised her hand.
curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog
Were they going to have to actually EAT the Gillyweed today? GROSS. Alex did NOT want to touch that stuff, no matter how much it may have improved his swimming abilities. He wrinkled his nose at his sister's answer--it DID look like gross rat tails--but then remembered he was angry at her and quickly glanced away, but not before he GLARED at her. Just to remind her he was still not talking to her.
He raised his hand, "Well, once you eat it the effects usually last for like, an hour or so," he said. That was all he really had to say on the matter.
