Default The Greenhouses: Herbology Lesson Two

Herbology Lesson Two

The second Herbology lesson of the term was taking place in the relatively warm greenhouses—enchanted to shield the collection of striking plants from the frosty winter conditions. They were going to be working in Greenhouse Three today, and Seren had quite a bit in store for them. Seren stood just inside the entrance to the greenhouse, dressed in robes of teal, she eagerly awaited her students to arrive. Hopefully they would come prepared to get down and dirty.

As you enter Greenhouse Three you find that a long Oak table occupies a length of the central corridor, with stools positioned around the sides. To the immediate left the flower bed is completely empty. At the front of the Greenhouse, is the all too familiar black board and on it, it says....

Oh.

So Helena's idea about talking to plants was not that bad after all. Well... of course they need attention, since they are alive, now aren't they?

But... What. Was. That. Smell?!

EWWW.

Helena stared at the super smelly buckets, but had no idea what it could be there.

Eww. Herbology could sometimes be so disgusting.

Sierra wrinkled her nose at the sudden appearance of the three buckets, filled to the brim with what was supposedly three different types of...substances. Whatever they was supposed to be... She didn't know, and definitely didn't want to know, but the smell was terrible all the same. She raised her hand. "Stinky, stinkier, and stinkiest," she said, pointing at each of the three buckets as she answered.

[QUOTE=Hera;10413853]

"Now today we will be looking at Magical Plant Care and Maintenence... so now my first question to you, is what do you think this entails?"

Samira raised her hand. "I think it means how you take care of a magical plant specifically, since they're different from muggle plants and all. Like, certain plants can be dangerous, or need more care than others, so you need to make sure you're taking care of it properly...?" It came out sounding more like a question. Eh, plants was not Samira's forte.

SPOILER!!: Ze professor again!

Samira scrunched her nose as she looked at the-stinky!-buckets in distain. Wasn't digging around in poop in first year bad enough? Her eyes roamed over the buckets again, and she tried to hold her breath as best she could. "Um, dragon dung?" she answered, using her last bit of air. Or, in other words, poop.

"Yes, it is dung dear, but what kind?" she asked.

Nika raised an eyebrow. Well if one of them was dragon dung then anything was possible right? "Erm.... Elephant dung?" Yeah okay that was an awful guess, but it was the only thing she had. "Or maybe cow poo?" She had heard of her friend's families using that on their plants, but they were muggles so maybe wizard stuffs different.

Samira wracked her mind as she tried to come up with an answer. She wasn't very good at identifying....poop. Raising her hand tentatively, she said, "Maybe just mud? Or..." her thoughts suddenly flashed back to that horrid Care of Magical Creatures class, and she couldn't help but add, "Or maybe chocolate pudding."

What creature could possibly be so lucky to have dung sufficiently magical to be used as a fertilizer? "Do they all come from creatures?" Eino asked with his hand raised. The least she could do was give them some tips, for all he knew it could be her dung. In which case, she just killed the whole herbology thing for him. Or it could be plant dung? Some plants are carnivorous they ought to disgest food somehow. He shook his head. Too much thought was being put into this. Why was dung so mysterious? He stood on the tip of his toes and leaned forward, trying to take a glimpse at the contents of the buckets. Eino knew of some sort of horse dung that was used but couldn't remember which. "Abraxan dung?" He said finally with his hand raised. It was either that or Thestral dung, but that one would be invisible, right?

Hello, Daddy! Hello, Mom! I'm your ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-cherry bomb!

Lucas flipped through the textbook quickly but didn't see anything specific about dung (which was, by the way, gross). Maybe he'd just missed it. He decided to take a stab at it anyway. He raised his hand and said, "Well, I know some Muggles use cow... Um... Dung as fertilizer, so maybe that could be it. But are they all from magical creatures? I'm not really sure... Isn't most dung good for fertilizer? Perhaps it could be from something like a hippogriff?" He frowned a bit. Alright, herbology wasn't his best subject. He basically knew nothing about it. But hey, at least he'd tried, right?

Lexi raised an eyebrow when the Professor winked at her. She hated Mooncalf dung like... SO much. She liked to watch the mooncalves dance, but she had vowed several years ago never to collect their feces ever again. It was one of the most disgusting and scarring moments in her life.

"Abraxan po-- dung? Or unicorn? Could it be the dung from any such magical creature? It stands to reason that a magical creature of any sort would have dung of a slightly magical nature maybe? Since... dragon dung is the most potent..." Grasping at straws... she did it.

Why was everyone so grossed out by dung. He wouldn't say it was pleasant, sure, but was part of life. And they weren't even touching it yet!

Peering to see the fertilizers better, Spike puffed out his cheeks in thought. "Is that one just really good quality homemade compost?" he asked. Did the greenhouses have a composter? He wasn't sure. "And the other one...looks like a kind of mashed up seaweed." He frowned, not completely sure. He'd heard of seaweed being used, and they did aquatic plants before. But it was a bit odd. Dragon dung was the common choice, afterall.

Now they are talking about dung? It disgusts her, but she has no choice since plants need dung. "Mooncalf manure?" responded Aiden hesitantly as she pauses. "... Or perhaps mixture of nitrates?" Nah! Maybe not. Nitrates mixture is common among the muggles, but not to the wizarding world.

"This is disgusting," Stella thought to herself looking with disgust at the smell brown lumps. The first lump is dragon dung and now the question is what are the other two. Thinking what could the other two lumps be. "Maybe one of the lumps is abraxan dung and the other one could be some sort of compost," she suggested raising her hand.

He gave Lexi a quick glance as she replied to the Professor's questions. Good one, Abraxans, there was a stable around the grounds for them wasnt there? As Kurumi sat in her seat thinking, all of the more obvious answers were immediately thrown out, leaving her to sit back and think a bit more a few of her favorite creatures, namely the phoenix and the griffin, hadn't been mentioned yet, but she somehow had a hard time imagining someone following one of those fantastic creatures around with a small plastic bag hoping to catch some of their droppings. "How about Re'ems, professor," Kurumi said after a brief moment of thinking. "I have read that their blood gives the drinker immense strength, so perhaps some of this is also transferred to their...erm...droppings and therefore will make plants stronger if used." Of course, the creatures were extremely rare, so it might be rather difficult to collect it.

Penny was thinking about the different fertilizers that could be in the buckets....
1. Dragon Dung
2. Thestral Dung
3. Cow Dung

She couldn't think of any other kind, and now the smell of the buckets was making her nauseous..

Louisa, squeezing her nose with two fingers, raised her hand, "Ubbb... I think since they use Dragod Dudg.. they might as well use Hippogriff's Dudg?" Oh and she was NOT about to let her nose free since those buckets were around, no matter how stupid her words sounded. Hmph.

The joy of being praised for answering the first question evaporated as soon as they started talking about....poop. Lovely. Ari didn't say anything at first, listening to her mates, some of which suggested dragon dung. It was, apparently, one of the right answers. Trying to distract herself from the smell. Ariadne raised her hand to venture a guess. 'Unicorn dung, maybe?'

A conversation on poop, how lovely (sarcasm) "Well perhaps erumpet dung could be used for fertilizer if you don't pervoke the creature and just collect the dung. However if anything went wrong things could turn very dangerous real fast", Chloe responded with a slight shudder with her hand raised high.

"No... and I can't say I've ever tried it, but thats an interetsing theory Miss Hollingberry."

Ariadne raised her hand to venture a guess. 'Unicorn dung, maybe?'
"No... Unicorn dung would be too difficult to obtain, and it would probably be worth its weight in gold...."

"Abraxan po-- dung? Or unicorn? Could it be the dung from any such magical creature? It stands to reason that a magical creature of any sort would have dung of a slightly magical nature maybe? Since... dragon dung is the most potent..." Grasping at straws... she did it.

Seren clapped her hands together in joy. "Yes! The second one is Abraxan dung, its not as common as Dragon dung, but its still very good, very affordable and easily stocked."

Isn't most dung good for fertilizer? Perhaps it could be from something like a hippogriff?" He frowned a bit. Alright, herbology wasn't his best subject. He basically knew nothing about it. But hey, at least he'd tried, right?

"Correct! Hippogriff dung is also used as fertilizer, though its not always avaliable and is a little pricey."

"So now that we have identified our three fertilizers, heres what you need to know. Dragon dung, is one of the most common, and most popular fertilizers on the market. It is well stocked and very afforable. Hippogriff dung is just as good but because its not as popular and there is nowhere near enough of it on the market you'll find that it is a little more expensive to buy. Though if you have your own Hippogriff then by all means use its dung, as its very good especially in greenhouses. The middle man in this situation is Abraxan dung... often overlooked, Abraxan dung is best used as part of a compost in a flower bed or as used as dired fertilizer on small trees and shrubs."

With a flick of her wand, the three buckets of dung disappeared, and another single bucket appeared on the table. This one had a silvery substance in it.

Mooncalf dung.

"Now, we used Mooncalf dung last lesson in a solution... Why do you think we opted to use Mooncalf dung as opposed to something more common such as Drangon dung?"

"Because it is a very potent dung when picked in the full moon in the moonlight. It helps a plant grow tenfold what other dungs are capable of", Chloe responded with her hand raised high.

Louisa exhaled loudly for a second when the three buckets disappeared but another bucket was replaced. She groaned and sniffed. Hmm. Well it was only one and it didn't stink that bad. Smelling her brothers' diapers for a few years, she was fine with one bucket of poop. "Umm.. Because it is more powerful...?" She asked rather than answered.

Were they SERIOUSLY talking about different kinds of DUNG?!

EWWWW!

This couldn't get any more disgusting. And smelly.

Ah, the Mooncalf dung. She remembered perfectly that smell. Why did they use it? "Because it's more... special?" Helena suggested with her hand raised.

Ariella thought for a few minutes about her answer. It was an odd question...because both dungs helped a plant to grow. She decided to raise her hand and take the shot anyway. "Well, mooncalf dung is very powerful. It helps a plant to grow, while strengthening it, whereas other fertilizers might just help a plant grow." That sounded extremely awkward, didn't it? Ugh.

Seren smiled, "Yes, but powerful in what way?" ... though that was somewhat self-explanatory.

"Special... yes it is special... but why?"
Seren could see on the girls face that she wasn't ammused by the topic thus far.. it always ammused her how students didn't like dung.

"Yes, thats exactly right."
“Mooncalf dung is re-known for its effects on magical plants. It helps plants grow stronger and faster, which is good when you’re a little pressed for time. Generally speaking Mooncalf dung is used quite sparingly, or as a solution. It’s also particularly good to use on cuttings as it increases the speed of root growth, which is essential for the plants survival.”

Flicking her wand once more the Mooncalf dung disappeared... and the table was clear again.

“Now before we go onto the practical portion of our lesson today, there are two more things we need to cover. Firstly... watering.”

Seren peered along the table at the students faces. They should know this by now... but there were always a few that were clueless.
“What are the dangers of over-water or under-watering a plant?” she asked... “And are the effects reversible?”

OOC: I will post the next part of the lesson- which is leading into the practical portion- in approximately 7-8 hours.
