'The Ugly Duckling could also be mentioned. Even though magic is not so obvious here, it could be something we call ‘Transfiguration’.’, she said, hoping it made sense. If not..well…she could at least say she tried. ‘Or…in “Beauty and the Beast” ’, she tryied one last time, ‘The Beast is a prince who was placed under a spell because he could not love. The one way he could break the spell was to learn to love another and earn her love in return before the last petal from his enchanted rose fell, which would bloom until his twenty-first birthday.’ |

William raised his hand again. " How about the Wizard of OZ?" William asked her. " There was a girl named Dorothy. her dog Toto, The CoWardly Lion, Tin Man and The ScareCrow.' William told the professor. " The was two witches. good witch Glenda from the North and the Wicked Witch of the west. " Willaim continued the story. " The person they wanted to see was the all powerful Oz, so you could possibly call him a warlock" William said to the professor. Dorothy needed a way home, got red shoes from the Good With, but thet Wicked witch took them from her and the ScareCrow wanted a brain, the Tin Man a heart and the Lion needed courage" William explained to the professor. " The all powerful Oz gave them all of these just by making them feel good, but I consiser this another part of magic because he made tham all believe in themselves and their dsetinations" William almost finished the story. " Dorothy woke up from her dream, everyone in her family and around town had been part of her dream, so in fact to me, that is powerful magic" William smiled. |
Amy put up her hand Profesor, in Rupunzel, Rupunzel's actual father is said to of stolen some, uhh, she pondered for a second. Then she remembered into the woods. of a witch's green vegtables, like cabage and all that she nodded, and then she, the witch lay a curse of his family, so not only did she take Rapunzel, she left a curse on their family so they'd never be able to have another child Amy nodded. There were loads of others...but she couldn't remember any of the other ones. Brother's Grimm had loads...she just had to remember, so I guess that because Rapunzel had brothers and sisters before then her mother must of had good fertillity and to change that so quickly could of been magic...she was waffeling. Annnnd, the tower had no way of getting up or down so she'd either of apparanted or had to use a broom, plus her hair was longer than most normal people could make and she could of had some help from magic, Amy nodded |

Looking at him as he spoke she smiled and simply nodded her head. She had not had many fairytales read to her as a child... this class was totally biased toward Muggleborns. It was outrageous. Though, she raised her hand and said, "Well... the Wizard of Oz was definitely someone who saw a few things from our world. I think. Either that, or the author was hallucinating. I think the little people could have been goblins... or gnomes or something, though. And the wizard was probably, well... a wizard yeah? Or... it could all just be some Muggles' silly idea as to what our world is supposed to be like." Ramble much? Yes. Indeed. |
Well, of course there was lots of magic present in fairy tales. That was WHY the muggles enjoyed them so much! Only in fairy tales could they hear about fairies and nymphs and all that--or so they thought. They were also so oblivious to the fact that the fairies and dragons in those stories were totally NOT realistic at all. Oh, Muggles. He raised his hand. "Well, there's that one story, Rumpel...stein? It's about a little man who makes a princess spin hay into gold, or something, right? OBVIOUSLY there's got to be some magic involved in there, cause you can't just pick up hay and have it suddenly transform into gold unless you've got some sort of magical ability," he explained. |
"Marry Poppins certainly was influenced by the idea of magic. The nanny flies with an umbrella, people can jump into the world shown in a picture which is rather inventive since we can't even do that as far as I know", Chloe responded after raising het hand. |

Simon knew if he wanted to answer he would just have to guess. "Jack and the beanstalk?" Simon knew that Jack met some sort of gaint so he was hoping that would be a good answer though he doubted it. |
Connor raised his hand again. "Sir there is a story about a Gingerbread man that walks and talks and and a wolf that talks in the same story. Could that have been someone levitating a treat to their dog or maybe someones partonuses talking or something? |
Quote:
Although the story clearly had a witch in it, she hoped it was a good answer for him. She didn't feel like getting made fun of today. |
Penny had thought of another fairy tale with magical incidents..Putting her hand in the air...."Sir, Red Riding Hood must of had some magic in it too... Firstly the wolf 'talks' to the girl in the woods.... she tells him she going to her grandmas, but he gets there first, swallowing the grandma whole and disguising himself as the grandma - I mean if he really was a wolf, could he talk....and how did he disguise himself ...sounds like transfiguration to me.." Then thinking about the fairy tale some more.."Also how did the hunter manage to cut open the wolf without killing him..in the story the hunter cuts open the wolfs stomach, the girl & grandma emerge unharmed and they fill the wolfs stomach with stones - when the wolf wakes up, he's thirsty and goes to the river to drink, but falls in and drowns" And maybe the story wasn't overly magical... Penny thought that it has definite points of interest.... |

Well, that would certainly have an effect on the other person...like making them FAINT. So, "True Love's Kiss" did NOT exist. Snapping out her thoughts the girl focused on the question that had been asked. What Fairy tales, that she knew of, had suble hints of REAL magic? Hehe, this is where her favorite stories her daddy told her would come in handy, but many people had already said them. Pfft. AHH! No, some said Little Mermaid, her favorite. Oh well, time to improvise. Hmmm....hmmm...hmmm...hmmm....AH! Peyton raised her hand so fast that if there had been a fly there it would have ended in a coma. "Professor, I have an idea too; Peter Pan," was that a fairy tale...eh? She didn't know. "Peter Pan was able to fly all the way from Never Land to Wendy's house. What if he used a broom to fly AND was able to stay young...a kid forever," Peyton stopped and took a deep breath and began again, "So, what if he had some kind of aging potion that kept him young, eh?" That sounded a bit right...right? Peyton felt confident of her answer, but one thing she was also confident was that she was never going to look at Peter Pan the same. |
Caroline finally raised her hand after thinking forever a fairy tale that no one else had bought up, she didn't remember anyone bringing up this one, Thumbelina, it was one from her long list favorites among the muggle fairy tales. "Professor what about Thumbelina, where the woman wants a child, a little girl so she when to a witch and the witch gave her a seed to plant. The plant bloomed into a flower and a girl came out of the flower. The girl was no bigger than the woman thumb, that's whys she was named Thumbelina" |
"Well there's all sorts of examples. Fire-breathing dragons in Sleeping Beauty, a pumpkin being transformed into a carriage in Cinderella." Ellie suggested with a shrug. Growing up, she never liked the classic muggle fairytale movies. They made magic seem all pink and sparkly. Magic didn't sparkle. |

SPOILER!!: Treyen! *snuggles* As she kept her attention on the younger girl, Kurumi caught something VERY sparkly out of the corner of her eye and instantly wished that she had brought her sunglasses with her. She had had them during Arithmancy, but didn't think she would be needing them for Muggle Studies. Yet, there HE was flashing one of his bright smiles and.... WINKING! Kurumi's stomach tied in knots and her cheeks flushed a deep pink. She immediately thought about sitting on a block of thick ice to prevent her hair from changing colors. |

Penny remembered a story that her grandma one told her about a boy & girl... trying to recall the name - and then it came to her... Putting her hand in the air.."Sir, in the story Hansel & Gretel, there are a few instances of possible magic... The witch who turned her house into Gingerbread to lure the children, The white bird that led them to the house, could the witch possibly been an animagus?, and the swan that carries them on his back across a large lake so they can get home safley..." Then Penny lost her train of thought, thinking longingly of have a large bird that she could use to travel... |
I had to wiki this for *some* details, but I got told it in Primary school. :3 Quote:
While she tried to think of an example, Iris listened to the other students. She noticed that some of the ideas were becoming rather, well... rather repetitive. She tapped her fingers against the desk lightly, as she thought back to her own Childhood. There were some Muggle fairy tales that her mum used to read to her; French ones. Or, rather, French stories that never really expanded to the masses of the world like Beauty & The Beast and Cinderella. After a moment or three of recollecting the story in her mind, Iris raised her hand. "There's a French fairy tale my mum used to read to me a lot... mainly when she found out I'd been rude to someone. It's called "Les Fées"... Though, it gets called "Diamonds and Toads" when it's told in English." You know, because there's nothing like translating something properly. "It's about an old Widow's two daughters. The elder daughter was the widow's favourite, as she looked like her mother. She was, however, very proud and self-centred. She liked herself too much. The younger daughter though; she was very pretty and kind, but looked a lot like her late father." Maybe using this story was a bad idea. She was going to have to explain the WHOLE story... Brushing some of the hair out of her face, the Head Girl continued, "The story is of how jealousy and greed is bad for you. The younger girl, the nice one, meets an frail, old woman by the water well, who asks the girl for some water to drink. Being the kind, polite girl she was; she gave her the drink. After doing so, she finds out that the old woman is actually a faerie - taking the disguise of an old woman "to test the character of mortals". As a reward for her kindness, the faerie put a charm on her so that either a flower, a diamond or a jewel would fall from her mouth whenever she spoke." Iris always thought that would be a huge inconvenience, to which her mum would ALWAYS remind her that it was a Muggle story and so should be perceived to be metaphorical and not literal. "The Widow was furious when she found out what happened, because she'd rather the older daughter have this kind of wonderful gift. Forcing the older daughter to go to the well, she made it clear that the daughter was to help a frail, old woman." Iris paused for a moment, to think over the story. Make sure she was on the right train of thought and such. "This time, though, the faerie appeared to the older sister as a very fine princess, again asking for some water. The older sister replied with a 'no', and insulted the princess." That was something Iris never really understood, either. Why would you insult a princess? "The faerie decided that, because of the girl's mean nature, that she should be punished with frogs and snakes falling from her mouth whenever she spoke." "The rest of the story is a lot like all the other fairy tales. The good girl found a prince and fell in love; then the widow was mad because the mean girl failed and disowned her and then the Widow died all lonely and grumpy." Iris nodded . There wasn't really much magic in the last part of the story, so there was no need to go into that much detail. Picking up her quill, she played with it in her hands as she went on to ACTUALLY answer Zookara's question. "It's obvious, from a wizard's point of view that the woman in the story wasn't a faerie, but rather a witch. Obviously Muggle's interpretation's are completely wrong, seeing witches as dark, evil people and faeries good." Iris's voice had a slightly bitter tone to it as she said this, "But I think it's safe to say that the 'Faerie' (Or... whoever inspired the character) in this story was a witch who was either using very small quantities of Polyjuice Potion - or more likely, charms and transfiguration to change her appearance and clothing. As for the jewels and flowers, and the frogs and snakes. Again, rather complicated spell work. Considering that it's a Muggle story though, I think that the Muggle who wrote it could've witnessed a backfired jinx or hex (OOC- Like Ron and Malfoy in CoS) and used that as their inspiration for the outcome for good and evil behaviour." There. Iris was done talking. Hopefully she hadn't bored anyone to sleep. |

That was just silly, right? Text Cut: Neptune & Legend The way Neptune was staring at him made Jeremy feel a little...uncomfortable. OKAY...? Giving her a small slightly amused grin, he turned to Legend, glad to have a good reason to shift his attention away from her at least for now. "So..you're saying, the FROG was an Animagus and his Animagus form was a prince?" He repeated with a laugh at the boy's theory. Snort. PROOF?! "Uhm. However you are going to prove that to Neptune, Legend-" Okay, there really was only one way. "-could you do that after class?" He did not want to witness that, thank you very much. Text Cut: Kurumi & Treyen Just as he was about to disagree with Kurumi himself, Treyen did it for him. And in a very nice and appropriate and over all correct way. "Well said, Treyen." Jeremy gave the Hufflepuff an approving grin before he continued, "While it sometimes seems that especially witches are mainly portrayed as evil characters there are various good witches too. Take the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella for instance. Even though she's a fairy, technically, you could say she's a witch." Yes, so like Treyen had said, there's good and evil everywhere. Text Cut: Connor, Sarah and Nessie He had actually been waiting, and dreading, for somebody to bring that up. Of course. The special magic of love. He was denying that something like that WAS possible. They all knew the story of Harry Potter and how he was saved by his mother's unconditional love after all. "Well, it is apparently. But you know this is a little different I think." How was he going to say that? He glanced back and forth between the three for a moment, looking for the right words. "I mean, like Sarah pointed out, how do they know that this is their 'true love'? They've never met after all." Now...that might evolve into a discussion on whether or not everybody had a soulmate or not. Crap. Quote:
What had Josh just said? That he actually believed in the magic of True Love's Kiss? He couldn't be serious, right? Jeremy turned to the Gryffindor with a grin on his lips...which faltered slightly when it seemed that the boy was indeed serious. "You have PROOF that True Love's Kiss works?" He was probably going to regret this question forever but how could he just leave it at that? Quote:
Noting everything the students had said on the blackboard, Jeremy finally turned back around when it seemed that nobody could come up with anything else. Well, they would still have more time to think about it after class. "Now, you see there are a lot of those references to magic in Muggle fairy tales which imply that the author or somebody they knew must have had some kind of experience with this world." He waved his hand which was still holding the chalk at the blackboard behind him to emphasize his statement. "Going back to our original fairy tale, Snow White, let us imagine that the authors, in this case the so called Brothers Grimm, did NOT have said experience with this world and hence did NOT include all those references. I'd like for you all to get into small groups of 3 or 4 and...well, 'unfairy' the fairy tale." Err, yeah, did that make sense? "So exclude all those magical elements. Be creative. Make the simple Muggle story still worth reading." Hopefully they would understand the task. |
They were supposed to make Snow White unmagical? Okay, cool. But they had to be in groups. Isobel looked around for someone to be with. Wasn't Jaymie here? She could have sworn she'd seen her. She looked around...nope. Oh well, maybe she was just hallucinating or something. Isobel looked around for someone to be on her group. |
Heh? "Unfiary"? What was that when it was at home....ohhhh. Right, he wanted to make the sotry boring. Boo. She loved her fairy tales magical, not muggle, still, she shrugged, she had to do it, even though she was 100% opposed to it, she stood up, uh, anyone free for a group? She asked, chewing her botton lip |
Anyone? Zara looked around for someone to be groups with. Maybe Nessie or Sarah? Or anyone, please. Just so she won't be standing alone, discussing to herself. She searched the room and looked for a familiar face. |
Zara wanna join? *brows* Kurumi turned to her friends at her table, parchment and quill in hand, and smiled at everyone. She would play the role of the scribe again unless others objected. So, there were certain elements in the story that clearly needed to be addressed like the dwarfs and the stepmother transforming into a witch. "Perhaps we should start by listing the magical elements of the story and then go down that list one by one to, um, unmagic them?" she offered starting to write down on her parchment. SPOILER!!: Kurumi's parchment Looking at her parchment, Kurumi thought she had covered the basics. Of course, people could add other details as they thought things out. "Perhaps the dwarfs were children?" |
