Has she... seen it? "The movie? No," she said quickly, slightly blushing. "I've just read it." Juuuust a couple of months ago or something like that, along with many other muggle fairytales. Especially for Muggle Studies. "Have you seen it?" Or maybe just read it? It didn't really matter, they had to know the plot.

"Hi Helena. What year are you?" She asked curiously. Ellie guessed she was either a second or third year.

Oh, right. For some reason, Ellie had trouble remembering that not everyone had a crazy muggle mother any muggle background. "I've seen the muggle movie, yeah. I've never read it, but it can't be too different right?" She said with a shrug. Right, now to change things up a bit. "Alright, so... If I understand correctly, we have to remove any bit of magic from the story and recreate the story of Snow White. So, what if the seven dwarves were just.... Snow White's little brothers? And we definitely need a new name for her; Snow White isn't... normal." Ellie began sputtering out ideas and scribbling notes down in her notebook. She dipped her quill back in her ink and looked back up at Helena. "Any more ideas?"

Viola sat down. "Thanks" she muttered, before removing her parchment and quill out of her bag. "Yeah. That's a good idea." She nodded her head. "How about the dwarves? They'll have to go as well. Instead, Snow White can find a cottage that belongs to a group of forest guards or...woodcutters?" Yep, that sounds okay.

Alex sighed. MORE group work? He was tired of partnering up, he much preferred to work alone. Not that he didn't like people, he LOVED people, but he would be certain that he got all the work done up to HIS standards if he did it himself.

"Anyone want to group up?" he asked, scanning for some lone students, or smaller groups that could use another person.

Viola was just starting to write when she heard a boy nearby ask if anyone wanted to group up with him. Viola slightly turned to look at him. He didn't seem much older than her, thankfully. She smiled. "Hey. You can join us, if you want." She hoped that was okay with Michael.

So, there were certain elements in the story that clearly needed to be addressed like the dwarfs and the stepmother transforming into a witch.

"Perhaps we should start by listing the magical elements of the story and then go down that list one by one to, um, unmagic them?" she offered starting to write down on her parchment.

SPOILER!!: Kurumi's parchment

Muggle Studies lesson one - Muggle Fairy Tales
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
magical elements
  • dwarfs
  • magic mirror "mirror mirror on the wall"
  • stepmother turning into an ond witch
  • poisoned apple
  • True Love's Kiss

Looking at her parchment, Kurumi thought she had covered the basics. Of course, people could add other details as they thought things out. "Perhaps the dwarfs were children?"

"I think perhaps the Mirror could be a regular old Mirror. Maybe the Queen suffered from some kind of muggle disease. Perhaps Insanity, or Multiple Personality Disorder. The poisoned apple could have been injected with a muggle poison and Maybe Snow white was merely unconscious, perhaps the prince's Kiss was just a kiss of a man who saw a beautiful girl and wanted her to love him. She could have been coming around on her own and just happened to wake up and return the kiss." All of that made sense to him, he sure knew how the prince felt, only this time the princess was wide awake.

Maybe it was a result of his Veela blood, Kurumi wasn't entirely sure how it all worked, but Connor had been very moody recently almost to the point where it was getting hard for her to keep up with him. Nodding, Kurumi set her quill down. Was there really a question as to whether or not they were a group? She had assumed that Heather, Connor, Eino, and herself were already one.

"Of course," she nodded with a look of utter confusion on her face. Why wasn't his heart in it? They were just looking at things from a logical and scientific standpoint.

Kurumi recognized the older girl from the opening feast seeing as she had been one of the few Slytherins to actually accept her cookies without turning them over and trying to figure out if they were poisoned or not. "Of course," she chirped as she scooted over a bit to allow the girl some more room.

Nodding as the other girl spoke, Kurumi had to giggle when she said that she thought Grumpy seemed more like an adult. He had seemed very childish to her, being upset over everything in the same way that a young boy is when they don't get milk and cookies before bed. "So...they were a small people family that she just happened upon in the forest?" Kurumi asked scratching her head. That sounded silly as well. Wandering through the woods and happening upon a colony of small people. If that were the real story, she was sure that everyone would have thought her crazy. "What if...Snow White, the real person," if there ever really was one. "What if she just called those who helped her 'little people'? You often hear people when they give speeches say 'I would like to thank all the little people who helped me get to where I am now.' Someone could have overheard that and decided to turn it into something more elaborate like dwarfs living in the woods. Snow White wandering through the woods until she found the next town isn't nearly as enchanting."

Connor nodded. "That makes sense too. I mean isn't there a muggle disease called Dwarfism, don't those people call themselves Dwarfs." He asked. He was full to the brim with ideas and he would share them, he just didn't feel right destroying a beautiful classic story and rewriting it. "I wonder what the Brothers Grimm would think if they knew we were all tearing apart something beautiful they'd written from their hearts?" He asked the table in general. "I'd hate it if someone did something like that to one of my songs."

Anyone?

Peyton smiled at the girl who agreed with her on Peter Pan. It amazed her in some way how muggles could have come up with fairy tales with the influence of the wizarding world. If that were to be true and there was a way to prove it then her mom wouldn't be so against fairy tales or...even muggles. Ugh, who was she kidding. Her mom was NEVER going to like anything associated with muggles.

She just knew it.

Looking around, Peyton didn't see a familiar face, BUT she really wanted to be in a group. "Anyone need an extra person?" she asked, loud, but not TOO loud.

Heather sighed, trying to take in the lesson. If only she paid more attention to the muggle fairy tales her father used to read to her instead of sleeping at the minute the story was starting to be told.

what were they supposed to do again? She kept perfectly quiet seeing that her friends were busy thinking, but she wanted to help in the least.

problem is, she has no clue what to do at all or what to think of.

Ah! Yes! There was someone in need of a group. The girl almost did a celebratory dance, but didn't. That would be weird for the people in this room. Instead, the red head returned the girl's smile and patted the chair next to her. "Yup, have a seat," she said to her new partner. "I'm Peyton Baltazar." she smiled.

Okay, time to come up with ideas. "So, lets get started," she said. The first year had an idea of what the professor asked, but did she have to write it down?

Kurumi jotted down notes as Connor spoke. "I've actually read that the first version of Snow White had her with blonde hair. When they went about making the films, they turned her hair black," she said not really knowing where she was going with this idea. "I suppose that gives us a better placement for where the story took place..." Clearly no where in Asia seeing as blonde wasn't a natural hair color there.

Kurumi looked around. Yes...that was completely off topic. Back to what Connor was saying...

"That kiss really is the tricky part," Kurumi said as she aimlessly tickled her lips with her quill. When you thought of things logically, the whole idea seemed a bit...well...absurd. She almost voiced her thought that someone had come up with the idea to give young girls forced into marriages hope that they really would feel something for whatever old fat man they were marrying, but she kept such thoughts to herself seeing as the group she was sitting with probably wouldn't appreciate it.

Deciding to put the whole kissing notion aside for the moment, Kurumi's eyes flicked upwards...

Kurumi looked around at her group again. Were they supposed to totally rewrite the story as if things had really happened? That sounded like a big dream crusher.

Her attention returned to Connor and his comment about hoping no one ever tried to analyze his music, and she laughed softly. "And I am sure that Shakespeare is rolling around in his grave because we are required to pick apart his poetry," she said sticking her tongue out. "I think it would be an honor to have someone want to study my music and try to figure out what my motivation was." Fairy Tales were another thing. Especially thing one since the ending was...well...awful.

"In the queen was forced to wear iron slippers had already been put upon the fire in the original story," she said wrinkling her nose a bit. "Then she was forced to put on the red-hot shoes, and dance until she dropped down dead. I suppose...this could be seen as a way of documenting actual ways of torturing people..."

Now THAT was a rather morbid thought.

"Thanks for letting me join you," she told them all. Looking at Heather she said, "I guess we're supposed to make the fairy tale Snow White into something more realistic? Without all the magical elements and that stuff."

Zara agreed to everything Kurumi and Connor said, probably took the words right out of her mouth. What else could she say about it, hmm. "Well, the one about the stepmother turning into an old witch, I wish I could say she used the shriveling potion, but that would include magic. So, maybe the stepmother put on a disguise? You know those masks they sell at department stores in Halloween that seem kind of realistic. That's probably it and she just made her voice all hoarse and raspy and like that of an old lady. And Snow White never seemed to notice her fake mask because her stepmother was wearing a cloak and did her best to cover her face as much as possible." Well, at least it was something right?

"Going back to our original fairy tale, Snow White, let us imagine that the authors, in this case the so called Brothers Grimm, did NOT have said experience with this world and hence did NOT include all those references. I'd like for you all to get into small groups of 3 or 4 and...well, 'unfairy' the fairy tale." Err, yeah, did that make sense? "So exclude all those magical elements. Be creative. Make the simple Muggle story still worth reading." Hopefully they would understand the task.

He got a grin! That was wickedly amazing! But he wasn't going back into that list just for that. No.

The boy still nodded and smiled, and then they had to do what now? Group work? Well, he knew WHO he should stay away from, that's why he headed towards them.

Peyton grinned sheepishly, "I know plenty of stuff about fairy tales." They were her favorite kind of stories. "Okay, so since we are talking about Snow White and taking away the magical things from it, we can rule out the mirror," she explained hoping to not sound too confusing. "The step mom could have been loony for all we know and talked to mirrors thinking that her reflection was someone else." You know demented from the head or something. Why couldn't her step mom be like that. Pfft.

Deciding to put the whole kissing notion aside for the moment, Kurumi's eyes flicked upwards...

...and she saw a VERY confused looking Heather sitting across from her. "Heather, where do you think the idea of the evil stepmother turning into an old witch came from?" she asked hoping that the subtle hint would help bring her back to what they were discussing. "I was thinking that perhaps it was just a matter of her growing old and, as Connor mentioned, perhaps her mind had become so demented that her appearance changed due to pulling on her own hair and whatnot."

SPOILER!!: Kurumi's parchment

Muggle Studies lesson one - Muggle Fairy Tales
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
magical elements
  • dwarfs
possibly children? really were little people? just people in the next town over who were called 'little people'?
  • magic mirror "mirror mirror on the wall"
regular mirror and the queen had multiple personality disorder?
  • stepmother turning into an old witch
  • poisoned apple
    apple injected with poison
  • True Love's Kiss
    happy coincidence

Heather gave out a soft squeak when she heard her name being called, but then sighed in relief. Thank Goodness for Kurumi! really! Heather put on a smile, and thought of an answer to her friend's question.

"uhm..I think it's a logical thought. After all, the queen was jealous of Snow White's beauty and she was getting so old, and the more jealous she got, the more ugly she sees herself. It could be psychological-pushed to the brink of insanity, wanting to stay beautiful, and if she can't, then she'd kill what is beautiful." Good, good, she was getting the hang of it now, she really needed to thank Kurumi later.

"i think i've read somewhere, that crazy people in the olden times were mistaken or thought of as witches..." Really, how discriminatory of muggle fairy tales, really. "...so, maybe that's where the idea of the stepmother turning into an old witch came from? Maybe the stepmother went crazy because of her obsession to be young and beautiful..."

"The step mom could have been loony for all we know and talked to mirrors thinking that her reflection was someone else." You know demented from the head or something. Why couldn't her step mom be like that. Pfft.

Samira nodded thoughtfully. "Yeah...I like the idea of her being crazy! And also, the thing about the seven dwarfs. Maybe they could have just been really small old men." Creepyyyy. Samira didn't know about Snow White personally, but she wouldn't want 7 old dudes she didn't know following her around everywhere.

"Alright, so the step-mother was delusional." Hehehe.

Snow White:
-The Magic Mirror was never magical. The step-mother was delusional and loony so she thought she could talk to mirrors and the mirrors would talk back
-The seven dwarfs were not really dwarfs, but just really small old men

Sarah turned to Zara and said, "Shall we?" with her brows raised. She took out her parchment and quill and wrote the heading Muggle Fairy Tales neatly and underlined it.

Jamie had almost been sleeping, but because he was near the front of the class, it was less easy to cover up. Hearing the sound of chattering students, his attention span widened and he looked around. Group work? Blehh...

Knowing that he wouldn't get away with just slithering in the corner by himself, Jamie stood up and did his usual partner gaining skills, by waving his arms around uncontrollably. "Anyone want meeeee?" For their groups, that is. He knew that everyone wanted him. As a friend, as a boyfriend, as an acquaintance. Yep.

What were they even supposed to be discussing in groups?
....

Sarah saw a guy waving for someone to join him. He seemed to be older than her. She moved towards him and smiled. "Wanna discuss with me?" she offered with a smile.

Peyton giggled at Samira's comment about the dwarfs. "That's gross," ew, she wasn't going to be able to see Snow White the same, either. "Okay, how about...the prince?" Peyton suggested. "What if he and Snow White had been seeing each other for a really long time and the step-mom didn't know about it. That would explain how he was Snow White's love," yes, because according to her daddy, two people HAD to know each other long before falling in love.

"First, the Witch was probably not a Witch, but a person from a mental institution that thought they heard a mirror talk," go on, Legend, write it down! "And Snow White was probably a Nurse there," oh, that was a pretty picture, and for the record, he was completely joking, Zookara.

Hmm. He needed a group. A group of people that like didn't hate him. Ahh. There as Neptune. She'd protect him from the haters too right? Finlay wandered over to them "I'm joing you lot too...." Cause like I'm headboy you know? You gotta let me do what I want? And anyway it wasn't likely that Neptune was going to say no. Or he'd not let her have an snuggles anymore. Which would be very disappointing because Finlay liked snuggling.

Ahh. Snow white was a nurse? "So....in your little story Treyen where to the dwarfs come in?" Because like...he couldn't see little people working at a mental hospital. Unless they like propped up things....like propped up the tables instead of table legs... Yeah. That explained that!!
