Di smiled at the boy. "Good question, Mr. Trigwell. It is not that water itself is 'feminine' - more so that in ancient times, it was associated with the feminine. Same goes for the moon. Like most things beautiful, it was primarily associated with the feminine - you might be aware that there are a number of 'moon goddesses,' but barely any 'moon gods.' The Elder Futhark runes are based on the knowledge amassed back in those times. Hence the connections."

"The claim that Laguz is a 'female rune' is also strengthened by the fact that it is represented by Nerthus, a mother goddess - a goddess of motherhood, abundance and fertility, things that were viewed as 'feminine' in those days." Hmpfh. "Does that help clear things up?"

Di's eyes lit up. "Mr. Carmicheal, it seems you have competition," she smiled. "Take five individual points for Slytherin, Miss..." Pause. Um. Di had no idea what the girl's name was. "Miss -?"

"Sowilo. Like a few of you have mentioned, the name of this rune literally means 'the sun.' It is another of the runes mentioned in all three Rune Poems and - most commonly - represents light, guidance, happiness and a new beginning."

She tapped the chalkboard again. "Looks like the Slytherins are catching up fast, Ravenclaws."

So. "Since it looks like most of us are enjoying the s'mores... let's suppose chocolate is the name of a rune." Di smiled slightly. Slightly. "Tell me something about this rune. What does it represent? Its runic number? Colour or god or goddess associated to it?"

Yes. The chocolate rune... did not exist. But a chocolaty question couldn't hurt. The students were free to make up fun answers!

"Professor chocolate rune could be the one indicating sweets?" she said and smiled

Bleh. Everyone was like, eating marshmallows. And...and chocolate!! OMG! Evelyn, seriously hoped that Destiny was not seeing this. Just once, could she not see without her glasses on? Did she even have her glasses on? Otherwise, the professor would totally regret letting them bring stuff to eat. "Umm..." Oh geez, what should she say her last name was?! WHAT?! Flores...or Shepard? Or, Flore-Shepard? "Flores. No, no wait...no, yea, Flores. Shepard."

That was extremely confusing. "Chocolate rune? It could represent..." What in Merlin's name was a chocolate rune? "Energy? Happiness?" Since, chocolate gave one spazz attacks and made people happy she supposed. "Then again...it could represent danger and chaos. Lots, and lots of chaos." And yes, she was staring RIGHT at Destiny when she said that. So much horror.

Selena raised her hand!! "The chocolate rune represents perfection," Selena said with a grin. Because chocolate was like... her best friend. Chocolate~` Chocolate~ Chocolate. Hehehe.

The chocolate rune?! Fee thought about it.
"Well, the chocolate rune represents happiness and new love. Its colour is a dark brown nearly black. It is associated with the greek goddess Eutychia and its runic number will be similiar to the urus rune", Fee said making up her own chocolate rune.
Yeap happines and new love. That was what chocolate meant.

The choclate rune means we all get to have choclate at the campsite' Rex laughed. " The other defintion it choclate is all the bad side of the gods and godesses of Runes." Rex explained to the professor.

Awww. Finn was rather slow about the next rune, but he was putting a few marshmellows onto a stick, before putting them over the fire. Yummy roasted marshmellows. But maybe he would answer the question. "Chocolate could like had a hidden meaning." He grinned, before putting a rather sticky marshmellow into his mouth. "I mean chocolate is lovely before can be bad for you. So maybe the chocolate rune could symbolise something good but equally bad in someones live." Yup. That answer was epic.

Arabella-Marie laughed and knew there wasnt a chocolate rune and raised her hand and said "The chocolate rune can mean that we can eat as much chocolate as we like"

Di nodded. "Certainly."

Di frowned slightly. Had she misheard? "I'm not sure I quite caught the name, Miss... Flores? Shepard?"

Energy. Happiness. Of course. "Danger and chaos. Nice interpretation." Di - who missed the fact that Evelyn's gaze was practically glued to a certain Slytherin as she said this - could see how that made sense.

Perfection. That was an unexpected answer, right there.

Di smiled. "Nice answer."

Quite a thorough answer!

"Mmhhm, sounds good," Di nodded. "The goddess of happiness and good fortune? Makes perfect sense."

Right, right. "Nice interpretations, Mr. Trigwell," Di said, giving the boy a short nod of her head.

"Duality?" Di offered. That sounded like a good enough word, to summarize Mr. Carmicheal's explanation. "Good answer, Mr. Carmicheal."

Di smiled at the first year. Or second year. The child looked like she could be either. "That sounds like a good prospect."


Back to the chalkboard. "Ravenclaw is still in the lead, but Slytherin has made fantastic progress," Di commented. "Gryffindor seems to be moving ahead at a steady pace... Good job, guys."

And mmhhm, chocolate. Melted chocolate in fact. S'more, remember? Di took a smaaall bite and swallowed, before she spoke again.

"The Chocolate Rune certainly sounds like a good rune," she said. "But, moving back to the Elder Futhark runes for now, who can tell me something about this rune?" She held up one so that everyone could see it, as she said this. Only a few more to go.

Well what do you know. It seemed she had learned something.

Smiling, Ivory sat up a little straighter. Not only were the s'mores delicious but the sugar was working on getting her thought process to function a little faster than it had a few minutes ago before the game, when she'd e sugargrown quite sleepy at the sight of their homey camp.

But now thanks to the sugar, she felt more into the games. Now she just had to hunt through her memory for which rune this one was.

Raising her hand she bit her lip for a second. Was it the rune of Mannaz meaning....man? Or was it the other one...the horse one?

Arabella-Marie smiled and went back to listening to what her classmates were saying as she didnt know much about the other runes

Iris looked at the rune the professor was holding. It looked vaguely familiar. "Ooh, that's Ehwaz." She said, with a little smile.

Was she allowed to go on and say about the rune? ... No... she'd let the others do that.

Enya looked up from eating a marshmellow. Meh she should say something. Answer or something. Think. Meh she really didn't care of getting it wrong. Enya went back to her marshmellows.

"Thats the rune ehwaz also called eoh", Fee started to explain,"The traditional meaning of ehwaz is horse.Ehwaz reversed often indicates a loss of some sort or the breakup of a relationship. It can also signify false friends",she ended.

Mmmmmmm, the marshmallows had practically occupied Ella for the majority of the lesson. She eyed the rune that was held up, still munching away.

"The Ehwaz rune? That's something about.. transportation?" She said out loud with her eyebrow raised into space. It just..... rang a bell in her mind, so she thought that she'd share it. And summin' about a horse sprung to mind. Well, a horse was transportation. So yeah, she was totally right.... right?

NomNomNom. These marshmellows were yummy. Finn looked up as another rune was pulled out. Oh he didn't know that one. "I don't know what one." He pouted, before sticking another marshmellow into his mouth.

Louisa's lips twitched in an attempt of smiling, but failed. She was still confused by Enya's fit of tears and annoyed that she walked away everytime they tried to talk!

She nodded her head down at Enya and continued to pay attention to the Professor. Huh? Louisa narrowed her eyes trying to concentrate on the Runes she was holding. Hmm. That was familiar...

Yeaaaaaaaah. She raised her hand excitedly and said, "Does it mean partnership, Professor?" Yeah, it probably does.....

Right?

Alice smiled gratefully and said, "Thanks." she then when to sit next to Firstie.

Alice contemplated on the rune the professor showed them. Being a fan of Runes, Alice had read several books about them and she was sure she has encountered this one. Yup she has! "It's Ehwaz and the meaning is horse." Right? Alice shared, a little too enthusiastically, with the rest. After recognizing her outburst, Alice wasn't so sure if that was the right answer. Dang it!

Amy raised her hand "that would be Ehwaz it symbolizes an unbreakable bone or true friendship"

Indeed.

"That's correct, Prefect Beaumont," Di nodded.

Di smiled slightly. Horse, mistaken for man? The thought amused her for some reason, even though it was a fairly common mistake.

"Ehwaz means horse, Miss Mayberry," she said, gently.

"Should I be shocked by this revelation, Mr. Carmicheal?" Di asked, though there was a smile in her words.

Di nodded. "Correct, correct," she said. "Ehwaz literally means horse, and is recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem. It represents travel, speed, progress, transportation, faithfulness and partnership, and burden or its transference. Don't confuse it with Eihwaz or Ēoh, the yew-tree; or Mannaz; which has a similar shape."

She turned to the chalkboard and tapped it again. "Seems the Snakes have snatched the lead from the Eagles by three points."

She ought to continue the lesson, though. Each house still had a chance to win. "Our next rune is... Berkanan."

Arabella-Marie had no idea who this new rune meant so she just stayed pretty quiet

"That's the rune of growth." Finn grinned with a big smile. Oh Finn really did think growth was good so it wasn't that surprising that he knew. He shoved a marshmellow into his mouth before continuing. "It can also mean rebirth." Not that he thought that was that epic.

"The rune berkanan stands for Growth. Fertility. Re-birth. New life. A new broom. Physical beauty or stature. Berkanan refers to renewal, regeneration, purification, healing, and recovery. It is the rune of the family and the home, and represents the enjoyment of romantic relations, fertility, and birth", Fee ended her speach and took another marschmallow.

Oooh, ooh.. "Does it represent.... Birth, Professor?" She had to ask, because she wasn't sure if it was a fact. But these runes were definitely stuck in her mind somewhere. She was better at this lesson than she thought. Heh, yay.
