Alex raised her hand. She was quite before but she need to answer this..
" Professor Levicorpus can be used as a defensive spell.
It Dangles the target person upside-down by the ankle in mid-air."

BanaBatGirl 10-07-2010 01:35 PM

ignore my belatedness.

"I must say... after the thorough lesson we had on vigilance and your histories at this school, I am shocked that no one even suspected the hot chocolate was questionable. Do you always imbibe whatever is offered to you?"

Of course, of course. Fletcher the GlitterPuff Hufflejock Champion Made of Awesome had to attend Defense Against the Dark Arts. OF COURSE. How else was he supposed to survive the rest of the tournament, eh? REALLY, HOW?

Fletcher nodded again toward the Headmaster and took a deep sip of his hot chocolate. He was about to swallow when the man made him fear for his life with one sentence, and Fletcher promptly spat out his chocolate all over the floor.

"Pffffffffftooooooie," he choked, trying to wipe his tongue off on his sleeve. "Tate. Sir. Really." HOW COULD YOU POISON A CHAMPION?! And even if he hadn't poisoned it, HOW COULD YOU PRANK US LIKE THAT?

SPOILER!!: quotesssss

I found your homework responses very enlightening." He rubbed the back of his head thoughtfully. "Last time, I asked you to consider the adage 'the best defense is a good offense.' Today's adage is 'think outside the box.' It's a very Muggle saying... not really sure what this box is they refer to, but does anyone know what it means?"

It means that there is often an obvious answer to a question, and then there are less obvious paths to equally viable answers. Thinking outside the box is about being creative and open-minded, and it's about being willing to look at every scenario as a blank sheet of paper, rather than as a tunnel, forcing you down the same path to the same answer."

Hm. Rather poetic. He should write that down.

"So how does this apply to Defense?"

In the absolute strictest sense, I want you to list as many offensive and defensive spells as you can. One each so everyone has a chance. He glaaaared at the Headmaster as he continued asking questions and shifted in his seat, attempting to siphon up the spewed hot chocolate with his wand without being too much of a disturbance. Fletcher was successful, for the most part, though there was still a small dark puddle under the seat of whoever was sitting in front of him.

Oh welll. That wasn't too... suspicious-looking or anything.... noooo, not at all. And now that Fletcher was done making messes and cleaning them up, he could answer the most recent question!

"Fiendfyre, sir." The Hufflepuff grinned wickedly. "That could distract your enemy for a bit." Like... until they burned to crisp. Why not?

"Awesome." Jimmy agreed quietly. Except not quietly. He wasn't much of one for whispering. Only trouble with Fiendfyre was the part where the fire wasn't so picky about what it burned and in a duel it could easily give the caster just as much trouble as was intended for the victim.

But still.

"Fiendfyre is Awesome."

Capitalised baby, yeah.

"Yeahhhhh it is." Fletcher turned his head and man-nodded to the kid who agreed with him. Cheya, he knew Awesome. It was his middle name. Just ask Neptune Bott.

"Only thing is," he added to the other guy, as if they were the only ones in this class carrying on a conversation, "you have to be quick on your feet and have an exit strategy after you cast that sucker." Like BOOM there it is. And then run away. Run far, far away and/or somehow lock them in the room where you were dueling.

"Bit of a last resort." Jimmy agreed, taking the opportunity to kick his feet up on the desk all casual-like, leaning back in his chair. Loooooooooooungin'.

"You'd get a rep though. No sucker'd mess with you once you pulled that baby off." Pause. "Wouldn't want to char your audience though." Hmm. Dilemma. Gotta have people to pass on the stories of epic after all.

"What about stupor?", Fee said raising her hand.
She was soo happy thsat DADA was again. She really had enjoyed the last lesson and hoped this would be just as great as the last was.

"There is Rictusempra" she anwsered "It causes the victum to feel the sensation of being tickled"

Lara was sitting calmly listening to the students suggesting spells ,each time she thinks of one someone else say it, they were really fastbut she should say one at least. So she wanted to ask them to be calm for a couple of seconds but that was surely impossible so she tried to think very hard and remember what her father used to teach her , she wished she had listened to him before, but it as too late. And yes she remembered one "Tarantallegra!" Lara said suddenly jumping excitedly "It makes the person unable to control his legs as they move randomly" Lara added as she got a grip on herself. She hoped that no one else had said it because it would have been really stupid.

Luna thought about this for a while. Were they going to duel? Luna didn't always like the idea of dueling. Hurting one of her fellow students sounded like a horrible idea. Luna put her hand up into the air anyway. "Impendementa is used for tripping, freezing or knocking back sthe target," Luna said hoping that it would work.

noodles 10-07-2010 06:13 PM

Oliver raised his hand. "Um.. what about the Conjuctivitis Curse, sir? It makes your eyes go all red and gross. It can be used to impair an oponents vision."

So they weren't supposed to get creative yet? Alright, then what hadn't been said yet...?

Keefer put both hands into the air. "Well, there's obviously the Unforgiveables. You know, Avada Kedavra, Crucio, Imperio. But I don't think those are within the realm of what most of us would actually use in a duel."

He thought of the students who seemed to appreciate the mention of Sectumsempra. He shuddered.

"So I guess I will have to say Confringo."

Eh. Viky didn't know thiss! She zipped her jacket - well, Simon's jacket - up to the very top, glad to be sitting by the nice fire. Warmth was good. Anywaaaay..... duelling spells to be used only in duelling? Cue the clueless face! Stupefy? Expelliarmus? Petrificus Totalus? But they had other uses too; she was sure of it. She just had to find out... what. Yeah. But, um, Depulso? Nah, that blew stuff up. Or it might have done, anyway. She wasn't sure.

But she stuck her hand up in the air, hoping one of her answers would be right. 'Petrificus Totalus, Sir?' she asked with a hopeful smile. It was probably wrong.... 'It would, like, freeze your opponent up, so they wouldn't be able to curse you back....'

HOPEendures 10-07-2010 10:28 PM

Daisy raised her hand and put it down. Raised it again and put it down. Everyone kept taking her answers so she just took note of all the incantations that were mentioned.

Cassirin 10-07-2010 10:46 PM

Tate wrote down the strictly defensive and offensive spells as they were stated, leaving off those that were used in any other possible scenario. They were all revved up to be thinking creatively, clearly, because they were already stating some out of the box ideas.

But this was in-the-box time.

Petrificus Totalus
Expelliarmus
Locomotor Mortis
Bat Bogie Hex
Stupefy
Impedimenta
Protego
Histedius Jinx
Stinging Hex
Finger removal jinx
Incarcerous
Rictusempra
Tarantallegra

"These are all spells that, if you don't know them, you should make every effort to learn them. I didn't list a few spells that are often used in dueling but also have other uses aside from dueling. I didn't list the Dark spells, because you aren't expected to learn or use those. Ever."

He paused to let everyone examine the list. "Anyone want to add anything to the list before we move on? I won't be removing anything at this time, but there may be some additions."

TeafortheSoul 10-07-2010 10:51 PM

AWESOME.

THAT was permission right there to use the finger removing jinx ladies and gentlemen! Feet still up on his desk, Jimmy grinned and raised his hand, almost forgetting his 'no answers or participation in class because you're trying to prove you shouldn't be a ravenclaw' approach to learning. "The knee-reversal hex, professor?" Yeaaaaaah. Awesome.

noodles 10-07-2010 10:55 PM

Oliver raised his hand again. "What about Furnunculus, sir? The boil spell. That's gotta hurt." Right?

Marie wrote down the list that was on the board as she listened. Hmm, what else could be added? Oh she knew one. Raising her hand she said, "Sir, what about Immobulus? That would render the attacker immobile so they would be unable to attack." That was in the box, right?

SPOILER!!: Marie's Parchment

Sophia raised her hand, smiling. "I know it is pretty evil, but couldn't Sectumsempra work?" she said, half asking. She knew it was a terrible spell, but if you were in a lot of danger it could work.

Alice copied down the list of spells into her notebook. She figured that Flipendo did have some other uses, and was probably used more commonly on objects than people, but it was worth a shot. She waited to see if anyone had any more suggestions, her hand and pen poised to write them down if they did.

"Great," Tate added a few to the end. "Now, this is the list of spells that you are NOT allowed to use in the next exercise. I'm going to propose a series of situations to you, and I want you to consider what you would do to protect yourself or your peers... but you may not use any of the spells from this list."

He seated himself on the edge of the desk. "Let's say this. You're walking down the Diagon Alley when you spot an older student using Levicorpus on a younger student. What are our options?"

TeafortheSoul 10-08-2010 01:34 AM

Jim raised his hand,

"The older one, is she hot?" Important information.

PadfootAndTheWolf 10-08-2010 01:40 AM

Riley eyed the list of non-usable spells and thought hard for a few moments. This was definately causing the students to think that was for sure, something Riley was never really that good at to be honest. "Umm Headmaster, could you perform the Jelly-Leg jinx on the caster, that way he would lose his balance and perhaps end the harmful spell?" the Gryffindor said hopefully.

Erindipity 10-08-2010 01:40 AM

Lexi raised her hand and said, "Well you could try to cast the counter to it... which is Liberacorpus and then punch the bloke in the face..." She was sure that the punching was uneccessary, but hey... she didn't like to see younger kids getting picked on and to a lot of people she WAS a younger kid.

Destiny 10-08-2010 01:47 AM

Was this a trick question?

Destiny thought it was. After all, what could she possibly do? Being underage only gave her one option and she was surprised no one had mentioned it. She sloooowly raised her hand, "Ugh..I would go an get a shopkeeper, or someone of age?"

Or she would just sit back and watch..probably laugh, too.
