raising his hand " Michael White ...Hufflepuff.... Any Organism that life is not based on Photosynthesis"

Iris looked at the professor, quite glad that she'd apparently not noticed that she'd paused and stared for a good minute or two. She made herself a bit more comfortable in her seat, and listened to Professor... Saylen talk.

Creature... What does it mean to us?

The prefect raised her hand. "Iris Beaumont, Professor." Iris looked directly at the professor as she started to talk, "For me, the word 'creature' defines any... uh..." Okay, finding the wording for what a creature is, is actually very hard, "like, any animal or being that's alive, but isn't a plant."

Eh... that wasn't a very good answer, really. Iris carried on, and elaborated her answer. "I mean, like... a plant wouldn't be a creature, because it's rooted to where it lives and grows, even if it's able to move and stuff. But! A Creature can travel, move around freely at it's own will. So... to me, creatures are anything that can travel, hunt for food, communicate with others of it's own kind - and sometimes other kinds." Iris nodded uncertainly at her own words, "I suppose in a way, we wizards and witches would also be creatures, in some senses."

There. That sounded more like a half decent answer. Even if it was a lot of nonsense. It's what she thought a creature was, and that's what the professor asked for. Teehee.

Leaning down to pull out his own gloves from his bag, Simon smiled as he straightened up to find Viky seated next to him. He could certainly get used to her being around especially next to him in class as long as it wasn't too distracting. As the professor spoke up starting class, the Gryffindor turned his full attention to her thinking on his answer.

"Simon Bennett, Gryffindor," he replied doing as he was instructed when there was an open chance to speak. "To me a creature is a living thing either kept as a pet or out in wild. Something not human but still a living breathing part of nature," he answered.

Oh question time. Taking a moment to think about it, Mia raised her hand into the air. "Oh, Mia Gibbins, Hufflepuff." She said remembering that she was supposed to give her name first. "A creature is an organism and in historical belief the term means all such things were created. It generally means non-human animals but as we were all created as well then I believe it includes humans too. So basically a lot of things."

Feeling a pair of eyes on her, Melanie shifted her gaze from her school bag to Treyen... who was having trouble seeing? She raised her eyebrows at the Little Lockhart, noting his narrowed eyes worriedly. Did he need glasses or something?

She nodded when the professor asked if they had gloves, letting her bag drop to the ground with a muffled thump. Melanie held the worn dragon hide gloves up for the professor to see... but quickly lowered them as she started to talk.

Melanie shrunk back in her seat just a little as the professor started speaking. The words didn't make as much of an impression on her as the manner that the Professor spoke with. She seemed very authoritative to Melanie. It reminded her of a certain past professor, only it wasn't quite the same. She looked over at Treyen to see how he was reacting, before looking up at the professor again.

Raising her hand nice and high, she started to speak. "I'm Melanie Lockhart and I'm a Hufflepuff." Cue proud smile. "To me a creature is an animal... with distinct animal qualities. They live in the wild and live off what's available. That's usually how I hear the word used anyway." Eh... She wasn't too sure about her answer. A little uneasy, Melanie lowered her hand to her side.

Salander gave Sapphie a small wave. She's always so happy that one he thought as he turned his attention back to the Professor. Maya Saylen. The name was imprinted in his memory. Which is quite a feat, given the fact that his memory was a little.... leaky.

At her question Salander raised an over-eager hand and replied "Salander of Slytherin."Hmm, that kinda sounds nice "A Creature is this large, walking frog-man that drags people to the bottom of the lagoon."

That did not just come out of his mouth did it?

Sammy raised her hand. even though she knew she would blabber. "Sammy Mec-I mean Sammy Star" she corrected herself "a creature doesn't necessarily have to be living, like zombies" she started, here comes the zombie obsession. "a creature, can be anything, like leeches" *shudder* "or a cat" YAY CATS! "but the term creature can't really be defined, because pretty much everything is a creature" she said, okay now would be a good time to shut up "and not many people believe in zombies" *glare* "but they'll be sorry when the zombie apocalypse comes" okay now she shut up, she was done. She had said her part ... about zombies.

Wonder if the professor remembers her?
Dianna raised her hand. "Dianna Malfoy. Slytherin."
"A creature to me is something created. It can also be inanimate or animate." she said as she lowered her hand.

Ever raised her hand immidiately.
"Ever-Lily Youngblood, Professor...a creature is any living thing, more likely one that can move, eat, drink, and think on its own...basically anything magical or nonmagical that can defend itself."

Noooooo, Silent Lockhart.

She never understands! That girl!

Back to the Professor. Oh, the gloves. Hehe. No, Treyen didn't bring those, actually, he had no idea where they were...sooooo....

Raising his hand the boy answered, "Treyen Lockhart, but you already know that...Hufflepuff, and you already know that too, Professor" he said, a small smile on his face, "A creature, to me, is an animal or living thing that we can take care of, or not" he said, lowering his hand now.

Narrowing eyes now.

Well wasn't this Professor just a ray of sunshine. Hehehe. Yush, Evelyn would actually like this class a bit more then. Leaning back on the bench, the Slytherin listened to the answers, almost missing what the question was in the first place. Something about what a creature is.

"Evelyn Flores-Shepard, Slytherin house." she said after raising her hand before starting her answer. "In my opinion, a creature is anything that isn't fully human." Simple as that. She would have added anything not fully human OR a plant, but some plants...she just wondered about. They had a mind of their own.

Kurumi raised her hand. "Kurumi Hollingberry, Gryffindor first year," she said with her violet eyes full of excitement. "I think that a creature is any living being that is able to act based on its own choice or decision. I can understand why some of my classmates say that humans are different from creatures, but I would consider us a type of creature as well." She put her hand down with her eyes still fixating on the two containers and her protective gloves in hand.

Right, Marie had her protective gloves with her. She never went to any class without them. Now she was really wondering what was in those tanks that they were going to need their gloves.

Raising her hand she said, "I'm Marie Salazar, Slytherin 4th year professor. To me a creature is anything that the Ministry has given a rating. Be it a 1X or a 5X rating. If it has a rating then it is a creature." Yep and there were a LOT of creatures out there. Some were kept as pets, like Frankie and Kali and others were not meant to interact with humans.

Raising his hand he smiles "JD Stevenson, Ravenclaw. I believe a creature is something that is living, breathing and can think for itself."

Dark eyes turned to the first speaker. Allright.
"Thankyou for that answer, Kellen Stern from Ravenclaw." Recording into memory. Yes.

'Uhm yeah Savanna Conrad?' Hah! But the girl had a good answer aswell. "Mhm." Nod nod. "Thankyou."

"Thankyou for that answer, Mister Sinclair." So far the students were proving themselves quite alert.

Hm. A cuddly animal...allright. "Thankyou for that personal answer, Miss Johannsen."

Oh, really? Maya squinted at the boy. "Thankyou for that enlightning answer, Mister White." Squiiiint.

Oh...my. gosh. Maya raised her eyebrow, listening as the girl tried to explain. "I understand what you mean, Miss Beaumont." Nod.

Hehe, they all looked pretty fun with their gloves on and nothing to hold. "Mister Bennet, that was very insightful." ...into your brainnn. Yep.

"Thankyou, Miss O Mia Gibbins." Hehehe. "Good answer."

"Yes, most people do hear it like you do, aswell." They certainly did. "Thankyou, Miss Lockhart-" Squint. Were she and that boy related? Hmmmmmmmm.

Uh... "You must be thinking of a Clabbert, Mr Salander." Oh she hoped he was. "And what is your first name?" Dude.

"Sammy Star." Well, well. Maya was approving what the girl was saying, until she mentioned zombies way too many times. "Yes, I am sure the zombies will be happy for your support. And there are many different types of zombies too." Cue smirk.

Ah, it's "Miss Maylfoy, thankyou for your answer." She wasn't sure what she meant with the animate/inanimate, but this wasn't a right or wrong answer type of question.

Exellent. "Good answer. Thankyou, Miss Youngblood."

Oh, here it comes. Maya stared dully at the young boy. Yes, she knew his name and all that, but was glad he hadn't ignored her request. "Interesting. Thankyou Mister Lockhart." WAS he the other Lockhart's brother?

"I see what you mean." Nod nod. "Thankyou Miss Shepard."

Hehe. This girl was learning. "Quite...interesting. Thankyou Miss Hollingberry." Aha.

"Marie Salazar," Nod. "You trust the Ministry to give you the right information, then." Foolish...or not? "Thankyou for your answer."

Maya was content. These kids knew. "Mister Stevenson..." Hmmm. "Thankyou." Maya nodded again and paced some more, stopping before one of the vivariums before turning around to face the class again.

"Very good answers from you all." No confusion here, right? "So what makes a creature magical?" Hmmm? She looked up at the sky, "What makes a creature non-magical?"

Pam raised her hand. "Pamphylia Barstow, proffessor." She smiled. "To make a creature magical, it would have to be of wizard decent right? Like how a dragon is magical, because it was found by wizards?" She blushed slightly, knowing how stupid that answer was.

Raising his hand once again "Well professor, ma'am, a magical creature would have abilities nonmagical creatures wouldn't. Fer instance, thestrals can only be seen by someone who has seen another die."

Adeline said brightly "Well when a creature is magical, they can do stuff muggle animals cant do, and are rather smart and cuning. Some of their parts can be used in potion making" she said with her chin up and a pewny smile across her face.

Hmmm...."Thats a good question professor." the Gryffindor chuckled as he had raised his hand slightly so he could talk. "Well I would have to say that in order for a creature to be magical it would have to have some quality that made it special over regular creatures, much like in Herbology where we have magical and mundane plants. So then a non-magical creature would be missing these traits." Riley finished with a curt little nod and continued to look at the professor through his grey eyes.

Simon listened as Professor Saylen comment over each other their answers, glad to see his own hadn't got too bad of a thought. At her next question, he debated on what to say before answering. "The abilities of a creature can make it magical or none," he replied. "After all no non magical creatures are known to spit fire or be born from ashes," he further added using dragons and phoenixs as examples.

Savannah smiled at the professor, glad to hear she was at least some what right.

Aha. More questions. Why was Savannah not surprised. SNORT.

Oooooh....good question, a question Savannah had to think of for a few seconds, Savvy raised her hand again. The wheels were still turning in her head, she hadn't totally thought of a GOOD answer yet but it was worth a shot, right? RIGHT.

"Uhmmm....like...."She began to twirl her hair, thinking."A creature is like...magical if like it has abilities and strengths that would be like considered abnormal for a normal muggle animal. "She paused for a moment, looking back at the professor."Like...it would be weird to see a dog that like breathed fire or something...."

Sigh. Did that make much sense? Probably not.

Brant raised his hand "Well Professor, for a creature to be magical doesn't it need to have magic in its blood?, like some animals don't have any magical ability. And once a creature has magic in its blood it gets passed down through its offspring?" Brant couldn't help but smile at the professor, she was so pretty. He hoped that he was not staring at her too much.

Is it like humans either you got it or you dont non-magical =muggle

Was it all discussion for the first part of the lesson? Well, surely yea with Lawson they discussed things but it was more about what creature they would be studying that day. The discussion they were having now, gave Evelyn NO clue as to what they would be looking at during the class. Supposedly something small. That's all she knew.

"A magical creature, is one that is one that is either created from magic, commonly used in the magical world, or has that extra nature about them that you wouldn't quite find with a common animal in the muggle world." Were owls common in the muggle world? She didn't know if they kept them as pets or not.

Non-magical creatures? "And non-magical creatures are just your, everyday creatures. Animals that don't need to be watched by the ministry or given extra precaution around so muggles don't find out about them. Unless...it's an owl. The muggle world pretty much knows about them." Or something. Right? Were owls even considered a magical creature? Maybe...

The whole first half of the conversation, completely missed by the small puff. She was to mesmerized by the vivariums that contained the creatures. Couldn't be more serpents, could it? Hm. It was when she realized that everyone around her, including the professor, that she realized the lesson had begun.

"The same thing that make us wizards and muggles, muggles." She responded, hand raised halfway. "They have the ability to do things that are out of the ordinary in the muggle world. Like winged horses; they are larger than non-magical horses and have wings. And Thestrals can only be seen by those who have witnessed and accepted death. All of those are qualities of something magical." Magically awesome. "Non-magical creatures can't do awesome things like fly or breathe fire. Like dragons. And there not as intelligent as magical creatures."

"There still awesome though." Totally. She would know, she had quiet a few non-magical creatures. Lowering her hand, she let her eyes flick around the classroom, listening to all the other students speak, and only occasionally peeking at the vivariums.
