| | | History of Magic Lesson 1
Professor Truebridge opened the classroom door and all of the windows so that the room could air out a little bit. With a few flicks of Loretta, the majority of the dust was gone and Ethan spent a moment looking around, spotting his old desk and looking underneath it to see if his name was still carved into the wood. Yup, there it was. He straightened and headed to the door, leaving and returning after a few moments with a bulging sack which he stashed under his desk up the front.
He took off his shoes and placed them aside, walking over to the door and tapping his wand against it to reveal a message; Please take your shoes and socks off and leave them at the door.
Thank you,
Professor Truebridge
Barefoot he strode around the classroom, idly moving each desk so they weren't quite straight and not quite facing in the same directions.
Organised chaos.
After a few moments he padded barefoot over to his chair and sat in it, waiting for the students to arrive. ooc:
The class will open in a few hours... basically whenever I wake up... it will go for about 24 hours or so, giving ample opportunities for everyone to join in.
Posting in the class indicates you have read the rules thread and intend to follow them.
Please pay attention to ooc instructions in this class, but refrain from posting ooc notes yourself; if you have any questions, please PM me. |

That works both ways, though, even for my view," Jake reasoned. "So I suppose unless we delve into his strictly dead mind, we won't have a true answer."
That seemed okay. Jake looked around; it seemed like everyone had quietened down a bit now. Blah. Feeling just a tad bored with the mostly lack of discussion with others, Jake propped his elbow on the desk and held his head up.
He could always visit the library again later. She turned back to Jake as he spoke once again. "Hmm...then what is the point of the lesson if we can't assume what he was thinking at the time? We have the facts on the back of the card and going from what it says, you have to assume that he was anti-muggle" Kayla raised an eyebrow at Jake. "Our feelings don't come into it, we have to go by the facts that are presented before us...no?"

Rian looked over to a younger-looking girl who said that Salazar Slytherin deserved it. As much as it seemed weird, Rian agreed. "You know what?" she asked, turning to the girl. "I agree with you. I mean, if it weren't for him...who knows what Hogwarts would be like today?" she smiled at the girl, who she saw was in Ravenclaw. Hmm, must be a first year. "I'm Rian, by the way," she said, sticking out a hand.
Lyra took the hand that was offered to her. "Hi Rian. I'm Lyra. Well, Lyra #2. Lyra Noir is Lyra #1, mostly since she's older and has been here longer and because she came up with the idea." 'Why am I rambling?' she thought. "You're a Claw, too, right? I think I saw you in the girl's dormitory earlier." Quote:
Jake looked over at Lyra. "Whilst I agree that Salazar Slytherin deserves to be on a card, it is for a different reason. I think that he does because many Slytherins probably hated the stigma around the House and wroked hard to be rid of it. But I don't think that saying he had backwards beliefs is very fair, you know?" Jake tried harder to explain his point. "Anyone can be accused of having backwards beliefs, based purely on the accusers views."
Lyra was angy, but held her temper in. She took a deep breath before responding. "Yes, everyone has different opinions, but that doesn't mean everyone was right. I think we've gotten to a point in our history where we can say for certain that everyone is equal- no matter what their background. And yes, I consider hiding a deadly baslisk in a school as somewhat backwards." Lyra was proud of herself for not loosing her temper and for behaving like an adult.
Lyra then turned to Copernicus (OOC- I forgot to quote you!). "Oh, I think you misunderstood me. I'm sure some Slytherins have the right qualities to be in Ravenclaw, and vice versa. But, they obviously would rather be in Slytherin, or they wouldn't be there. I think it would be unfair to place all the other students in the house the want to be in except the people who would have chosen Slytherin, if they had had a choice."

"Unfortunately there isn't too much documented about Xavier Rastrick, at least not much in any of the books I have. I think I'll be spending some time in the Library looking him up, later on. You seem to have some pretty interesting theories about him though."
But then, Celadine's mind worked in some pretty interesting ways, this time though, they were actually really helpful ones.
"I'm Tobi," he repeated himself, he had tried to introduce himself earlier, but she must have been WAY out of it, he gestured over to Celadine, "This is Celadine, she's in third year. I'm in Seventh."
Tobi disliked this whole, 'deserving' idea. What was the criteria of deserving anyway? Lots of people were famous without having done anything special. Who was that guy who got didn't die when an Augurey sang and got famous for it? Even though Augurey's don't actually herald death? And then there are people like Guilderoy Lockheart, who go out of their way looking for fame. Wind up famous, and also bonkers in St Mungo's. Deserving is relative thing.
"He just vanished. In front of a whole crowd of people. that's the amazing thing. That's what made him REALLY famous," Tobi explained. "Sure, its like the question on the board says; I think you can speculate alot about a person based on world events in their lifetime." Cela pointed out.
"Celandine Toussaint." Cela clarified when Tobi introduced her to the slytherin girl. Quote:

I do think she was more likely anti-muggle but her intentions might have been something a little less sinister than at first glance." Cela paused, "Either way, the toadstool tales are propaganda and indicate there was something seriously off about her."
Cela contemplated the other questions, "Did Beatrice Bloxam change the world? Maybe but not necessarily for the better. I don't think it is ever a good thing to shove your opinions down someones throats like she does with the toadstool tales. Pretending everything is all sugar and spice is kind of like lying." Cela spoke thoughtfully.
Cela held up her chocolate frog and nibbled it thoughtfully, smiling brightly as the the sugary goodness hit her tastebuds. "There have been authors over the years who have written specifically to their audience and to the times. If she was responding to public demand, or to what she saw as public demand, then her own like or dislike of Muggles wouldn't be reflected. She would simply write to what she thought they wanted to hear. Very good point," Copernicus agreed.
"And I also agree that she was trying to change the world, in her own way. To make it happier and simpler and more child friendly, even if she went about it in a way that scraped all the beauty and honesty from it. So I don't know if she changed the world, but I think she wanted to."

"I never said everyone was right, nor did I deny everyone was equal," he explained. "And I for one was referring to what you called his 'backwards beliefs' and hiding a Basilisk in the school was indeed totally wrong, but it was an action he took based on the beliefs, not the beliefs themselves. I only commented on the fact that I don't believe it's fair to say he had backwards beliefs," Jake shrugged. It was all he'd meant, he thought it would be understood.

Pro-Muggle or Anti-Muggle?
Did they change the world?
What was happening in history during their lifetime and how might it have influenced their actions?
Tobi copied it down on piece of parchment with ample room to scribble in notes.
"Here's my thought on this guy," he said to Whitney, "Like many people who make a living off the generousity of the public, he probably wasn't picky, Celadine is probably right, he probably performed for Muggles and Wizards alike. It says he's a Wizard tap dancer, but that doesn't mean he didn't have contact with Muggles; it's kind of unavoidable, at the very least, he wouldn't have been Anti-Muggle. At best he would have been Pro-Muggle."

*Only a few seats away Gabben heard Kayla.*
"Not really, it might only mean that he knew it would be safer for him to have a muggle free village. Less questions and fighting. All muggles and humans for that matter seem to fear and kill anything they don't understand."

Sitting down on the top of her desk, she starts eating her frog, Liz looks down at her card, Mungo Bonham, hmmm, that name sounds familiar... she thinks to herself.
Holding on to the legs of the frog, while munching on to the rest of the frog, having only the legs left, that is. She reaches down and picks up her bag, from by her chair.
Sticking the rest of the chocolate frog into her mouth, she reaches down into her bag, and pulls out a book of famous people in Magical history. Flipping through she starts looking for Mungo Bonham.

It says he's a Wizard tap dancer, but that doesn't mean he didn't have contact with Muggles; it's kind of unavoidable, at the very least, he wouldn't have been Anti-Muggle. At best he would have been Pro-Muggle." Cela was totally in the mood to question everything, "Maybe he was Anti-Muggle and disappeared because the authorities were on to his plots to bring down the muggle world."

"I like that! Tobi." she said a little too loud. Then he introduced someone else. A girl. "Hello Celadine I'm Whitney. It's nice to meet you." Formal meetings were so....formal. "Oh well then....maybe he wasn't deserving?" Whitney was so confused now. She turned back to the professor. "Sir?" she started, raising her hand, "What exactly do you consider deserving? What would the standards be?" Because a vanishing performer wasn't all that great, not to her anyways. Quote:

"Celandine Toussaint." Cela clarified when Tobi introduced her to the slytherin girl. "I should clarify my name huh? It's Whitney Ash-" she started but had to stop mid sentence. Was she hearing wrong? "I'm sorry did you say Toussaint? As in Nicholai Toussaint's sister?" Was that even possible? She knew he had a sister but hadn't actually thought of meeting her. "Isn't that just lovely. I love your name by the way. As I was saying, I am Whitney Ashford." Nothing memorable about her name. 'Nico.' she thought, still not able to get over meeting his sister. "I agree with that too. Only, from what we know,Xavier didn't do much."

Ana catch a chocolate frog and ate the chocolate. She turned over the card to see who she got. Wow she thought. "Albus Dumbledore" she whispered. Ana continue to listen her classmates.

He laughed and nodded, "I'm glad we have too, Lyra. I believe if not for Paris we wouldn't have had to re-meet but...that's a topic for another day." He looked at her and smirked as he caught her wink and watched her look at the card, "I'd say so too. I don't think it's possible to become any more pro-muggle."
Robert laughed, "That's one way to look at it and you're probably right. It seems that most men with power get paranoid at some point and do strange things. Muggle and wizard a like actually." He looked at her and smiled, "Yes I guess we agree..." he trailed off as he looked down at the top of the desk again and ran his fingers over it. Mariska nodded. " Very true," She said in response to his comparison of Muggles to Wizards. " I mean, there's so much more to lose when one has even a modicum of power, when you think of it." She mused. She looked at her own card and then laughed. " Perpetua Fancourt. Inventor of...the Lunascope. Hmm. I suppose that might be helpful if you've got a friend or family member who is a werewolf, actually." She said, unsure of why else the woman would have invented it. " Or, she was just a very avid astronomer," She said, shrugging as she handed Robert her card.

James opened the doors into the classroom and was slightly taken aback with the number of students in the class. He saw the sign and frowned before taking off his shoes and socks. He took a vacant spot that was near the door. His head turned from left to right, looking for any familiar faces.

"Hmmm, let's see" Liz says quietly, and pulls out a piece of parchment from her bag, and starts writing down notes from what she found on the back of the card, and from her book. Mungo Bonham (1560 - 1659) is a wizard who founded St. Mungo's. He once was a healer.
Seeing an asterik mark next to St. Mungo's she turns to page 488, where the asterik said to go. And found more information. St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries is a wizarding hospital in London, England. It was founded by famous Healer Mungo Bonham in the 1600s. The emblem of St Mungo's is a wand crossed with a bone. Wow she thinks looking up. I never really knew much about how St. Mungo's was founded...
Spotting James come in, she gives a little wave.

Jake sighed. Totally not my day.
Lyra felt a little bad about jumping down this boy's throat. "I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I just... I just think that their can be opinions that are just wrong, especially when they're based on hate towards other people, which, in my opinion, Slytherin's were."

Kayla had to giggle as well. "So we can safely assume that Wendelin, was pro-muggle. Seeing how she liked being caught and burnt at the stake by them" she placed her chin on her hand and looked at Lyra. "And also look at the time period she was in," Lyra began as she looked down at her fingers playing with her own card as they discussed someone else. "A time when it was horribly wrong to be known as a witch or wizard, think of those who really were not from our world and told the truth." She paused as she gasped for air. "It didn't tickle for them."
Yes there were moments when she could be serious and it seemed to happen more often than before. She was changing from what she used to be before. To her, there was a part of her life that was nothing but serious, which brought on the need to pull pranks and be who she was now, but she was learning to just be herself. That was weird. Quote:

Of course, having power probably made him paranoid to begin with..." She trailed off as she realized she was babbling on and on. " So. I guess we agree then. Edgar Stroulger's paranoia gave us the Sneakoscope." She said, flipping the card over again. Lyra turned to look at the girl who was on the other side of Robert and listened to her answer. She was also a Ravenclaw. "I do like your way of thinking," she added to the conversation. She never went into detail about the one who created the sneakoscope but she was rather impressed by the answer that the girl gave. Quote:

Lyra pressed her lips together and raised both eyebrows to what Robert was speaking. That was a door he did not want to open and it was a good thing anyway, they were in class. "Ahh, Paris," she said as she rolled her eyes. That was one girl she just couldn't put her finger on. She didn't consider her a best friend but yet she would never become an enemy, if Lyra had her way about things. But Robert also believed the card she possessed in her hand was also one that could be added to the pro-muggle board.
"So what are your veiws on Wendelin the Weird?" If she was going to discuss with one, she would discuss with another as well. Quote:

"Of course." Cela agreed somewhat gravely, "We didn't get caught did we?" She grinned brightly and noted the conversation she was having with Lyra.
"Wendelin the weird might not have been pro-muggle. Just Pro-fire. Or anti-muggle since she used a flame freezing charm to stop herself from being burned more than forty times; maybe she liked how uncomfortable it made the muggles that were trying to burn her, maybe she liked making them question their beliefs." Lyra looked up to find Cela speaking to her and she smiled. This girl was quite fun and strange, which made her like her even more. "Oy! Someone needs to tell about the Ministry professors sometime," she began with a sigh. "I was not here and really want to hear what happened." Now that was a time she knew she would have been angry if she stayed behind at that time. She was more than happy to have missed out on that part.
"So what would have made her anti-muggle?" She wanted to hear what Cela had to say about Wendelin the Weird and gather her view on things as well. It was always good to weigh out one side before sticking to one side.
