A note magically appears on the door to the potions classroom:

Quote:
Potions Lesson #1 will commence at noon on Thursday, December the 14th (EST)

An hour or so later...

The door to the potions classroom clicks and swings open of it's own accord. A soft flickering light emanates from within, beckoning you inside where the desks are precisely lined up, the chairs neatly tucked in, and the stone floor gleaming. The professor's desk, unlike many others, was completely bare except for a sheet of parchment, quill, and ink which appeared to have been placed just so.

Beck copped down the instructions, whent up to the professor's desk and retreved what was needed and then began to fallow the instructions to the letter
Ingredients:
Water (200mL)- potion base
Salt (6 g)- emits light
Billywig stings, dried, powdered (2)- excitation
Essence of firefly (3 drops)- aids in the production of light

Instructions:
*Set water to boil and add salt, stirring clockwise until dissolved
*Powder billywig stings and add to boiling salt water, stir counter-clockwise 12 times, then clockwise twice and repeat six times
*Carefully add essence of firefly, one drop at a time, stirring 6 times counter-clockwise then clockwise twice in between each addition
*Reduce flame and simmer for 20 min before allowing potion to cool
*Carefully ladle potion into appropriately sized vessels

Beck then noticed that some of the other students were taking their finished vessels up to the the professor's desk, beck then picked up her vessels and brought them up so that they could be examined to see if she did the assignment correctly. then returned to her desk.

Torie sat back in her chair as she waited for the rush at the Professor's desk to clear. Once the gaggle of students had died down, she quickly approached the front and collected her vials as well as the ingredients she would need for the potion. Walking carefully back to her desk, she placed the ingredients on the tabletop. She placed her cauldron on the desk and fetched a white marble mortar and pestle from the desk drawer. She also fetched a beaker and carefully measured 200 mL of water into the glassware. She then took up the mortar and pestle and clumsily tried to grind the Billywig stings into a fine powder. Luckily for her, they were already dried, so they seemed to crumble fairly easily. When she finally had managed to grind up all of the stings, she placed the mortar on the desk and used her scale to measure out the required 6 grams of salt. "Time to begin" she said to herself. Picking up the beaker of water, she slowly poured the contents into her cauldron and gradually heated it to a rolling boil. Gently, she picked up the parchment containing her 6 grams of salt off the scale and added it to the boiling water. With her spoon, she stirred it gently until all of the salt had been dissolved. A couple of times, she caught herself trying to stir it counter clockwise, but she sharply reprimanded herself, a silent caution to follow this recipe to the letter.

When the salt water was once again boiling, she shook the powdered billywig stings into the mixture and followed the stirring directions, taking care to make a mark on her spare parchment for each successive set of turns. After the billywig sting had all been introduced into the potion, she began adding the essence of firefly in, one drop at a time. "It's kinda like doing titrations." she said aloud unconsciously. She stirred and stirred, and added, and stirred some more. In a short while, the essence was all added and she turned the heat down to allow the potion to simmer. Noting the time, she waited for the twenty minutes to be over. In the meantime, she cleaned up her equipment as best as she could and put each thing back in its place, aside from the cauldron, the mixing spoon, and the vials. Finally, the twenty minutes were up. She turned off the flame and, after waiting for the potion to cool, cautiously poured the potion into the 2 vials. It seemed to look alright. Capping them off, she wrote her name on them and carried them up to the teacher's desk. As she neared the front, her foot caught in a loose stone and she stumbled. One of the vials flew from her hand and exploded onto the stone in front of her. A bright flash filled the room.

Crystal read over the directions on the board, copying them down quickly onto a sheet of parchment. While doing so, she listened to the professor as well, knowing he would tack on a few verbal instructions in addition to the written ones.

*Carefully ladle potion into appropriately sized vessels ones.

Satisfied that she had gotten everything correct, Crystal then went up to Professor Branxton's desk to retrieve her two vials. She set them on her desk, and then set about arranging her ingredients. She set out her cauldron, lighting a small fire underneath it. She then measured out the water needed and poured it into the cauldron. While waiting for the water to boil, she measured out the billywig stings and salt, careful to keep them separate. Crystal liked to have order and efficiency when brewing her potions, as messy habits could lead to mistakes.

Once the water was boiling, Crystal added the salt. She sitred clockwise until the grayish color had left the water, signalling that the salt had dissolved. She blew a puff of air up , trying to move her hair out of the way when she finally just reached for a hair band on her wrist and tied it up in it's usual messy bun. She then set to work powdering the Billywig sting with her mortar and pestle, careful not to drop any bits. She poured it out into the boiling water, making sure it all got in.

Crystal looked over the directions again, muttering them to herself as she began the stirring of the potion, countin each counter-clockwise and clockwise stir aloud so as not to do too many. She also marked on her paper when she reached the end of each cycle for even more accuracy. " Now I really want that self-stirring cauldron.." she said as she neared the end of the long stirring process. She finished, and then she proceeded to find her dropper, taking out a bit of Firefly essence as she went along.

She took a small amount, and with great care added the first drop, stirring the required direction and number before adding more. She repeated it twice, and then looked to her directions once more. She lowered her flame, watching the water to make sure bubbles weren't breaking the surface furiously anymore. She let out a breath, feeling quite good about her potion so far. Then she looked to the clock, noting the time so she could mark her twenty minutes.

Crystal didn't know what it was about potions, but she found it thouroughly enjoyable. She was checking over her notes and cleaning up her area a bit when she looked up and saw that her time was nearly up. When it was, she took out a ladle and carefully poured as much of the potion as she could into the two vials, corking them snugly. She then put them in vial containers, as she didn't want them jostled and going off. She didn't clear away her potions remnants just yet as she wasn't sure they weren't needed for anything else, so she sat at her desk quietly waiting for other students to finish.

Maya quickly scanned the instructions on the chalk-board.
Ingredients:
Water (200mL)- potion base
Salt (6 g)- emits light
Billywig stings, dried, powdered (2)- excitation
Essence of firefly (3 drops)- aids in the production of light

Instructions:
*Set water to boil and add salt, stirring clockwise until dissolved

She got up to quickly take the ingredients and got her things ready. She measured everything and got her cauldron boiling. She added salt, and stirred clockwise to make is dissolve.. But her textbook had been pre-used so it said ' stirr clockwise until dissolved and add an counter-clockwise stirr every 5 clockwise stir until dissolved '. She blinked at the instructions and decided to try it anyways. She stirred - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. she added an counter-clockwise stirr and looked in the cauldron. All the salt was gone. She blinked amazedly. How strange..

She took the powdered billywig stings and took a look in her text-book. It said to add all of it and to mix it 5 times counter clockwise and 5 times clockwise until it was liquidy. If they had been right the first time, why not try it again? She added all the powder slowly, mixing it the way the scribbled out textbook said to. She then took the essence of firefly. It said to dribble five drops and then add an counter-clockwise stir and then let the flame reduce and simmer for 15 min, instead of 20. She blinked and did as so - It seemed that the scribbled out textbook was correct in every way. That was just strange.

She blinked and poured her potion into the vessel, corking it up and putting the vessel on the vessel stand. She wondered if they were to make a potion such as the Polyjuice potion.

Zaza had been impatient to hear what the other animal-based ingredient would be. She had been hoping for a frog but she didn´t look disappointed, though, when she heard it was billywig stings. Must be somthing magical, she thought. She had been reading the magical creature book a little from here, a little from there, so she didn´t actually know what a Billywig was, but it sounded something hairy to her.

She collected the vials from Professor´s desk and gathered the things needed. The stings were small, so she supposed the billywig to be some kind of an insect. She tried to follow Neva and Cameron´s brewing at first, but she realized pretty soon it might only confuse her to try to copy two persons.

She looked proudly at her brand new cauldron before putting water into it. Think about it. It´s all mine! she thought to herself.

MJ looked down on her instructions

Ingredients:
Water (200mL)- potion base
Salt (6 g)- emits light
Billywig stings, dried, powdered (2)- excitation
Essence of firefly (3 drops)- aids in the production of light

Instructions:
*Set water to boil and add salt, stirring clockwise until dissolved

*Carefully add essence of firefly, one drop at a time, stirring 6 times counter-clockwise then clockwise twice in between each addition
*Reduce flame and simmer for 20 min before allowing potion to cool
*Carefully ladle potion into appropriately sized vessels

She read them three times and then began to do as they instructed. She began to boil the water and added salt, then began to stir clockwise until dissolved. After that she Powder billywig stings and added it to the boiling salt water, and she began to stir counter-clockwise 12 times, then clockwise twice and she repeated it six times. After that she carefully added essence of firefly, one drop at a time. She then began stirring 6 times counter-clockwise then clockwise twice in between each addition. After she was done she carefully Reduce the flame. She simmer it for 20 min before allowing potion to cool. Then when she saw that it was good she looked at the last thing.

*Carefully ladle potion into appropriately sized vessels

and thats what she did. She then stood up and handed it to the teacher and she went back to her seat a little nervous.

Kerry finished jotting down all her notes before approaching the desk to collect all the ingredients needed for her potion. Potions was not her best subject, so she was sure to detail every step of the potion making if she could. She made special notations to make sure the salt was completely dissolved before moving on with any other part of the potion.

Placing her quill and parchment near the top of her desk, Kerry was sure to give herself enough room to prepare the ingredients properly. She walked to the front of the room quietly and picked up the vial and ingredients and returned them to her desk.

She then reached down and picked up her cauldron. Then she looked down at the list in front of her. Water (200mL) Measuring this out very carefully, eyeing the 200mL line as she poured the water into her measuring cup, Kerry now satisfied she had the right amount, poured the water carefully into her cauldron being sure not to spill a drop of it.
Then taking her wand out, she whispered "incendio" and watched as a fire appeared under her cauldron.

Kerry then peered down at the list before her again as she watched to see the water begin to boil. Salt (6 g) Kerry gathered up the salt and began to measure 6 grams out. When the salt was correctly measured out, Kerry read on, "Set water to boil and add salt, stirring clockwise until dissolved." Kerry cupped her hand underneath the container she had measured the salt in to make sure none spilled out as she poured it into the cauldron, and stirred clockwise as she poured, watching the salt slowly dissolve with each clockwise turn.

After a few minutes of stirring and peering into the cauldron, Kerry was satisfied she could no longer see any grains of salt floating in the water. She looked at the next set of instuctions and took a deep breath, as the next step was a lot more exacting then the previous steps- telling Kerry exactly how many stirs to make and in what direction so that the ingredients to the potion brewed correctly, "Powder billywig stings and add to boiling salt water, stir counter-clockwise 12 times, then clockwise twice and repeat six times."

Kerry picked up the stings and added them to the boiling water. She knew she was being silly, but she reread the instructions yet again to herself to make sure she knew she had to stir counter clockwise 12 times first. "One, two, three... Kerry counted to herself, concentrating hard against the noises around her so she wouldn't lose track. "Twelve!" She said relieved. "Now what?" She asked herself, shaking her head she just couldn't keep the instructions in her head today. Glancing down, she saw next was to stir the boiling potion clockwise twice. That was easy enough. But Kerry's eyes widened as she saw this had to repeated six times!! Kerry decided to grab a spare piece of parchment and mark down each time she finished the 12 stirs and two counter clockwise stirs so she would not miss a step. When she had finally marked down the six and final time- she was ready confident she was ready to move on to the next step.

Glancing around Kerry knew she was falling behind some of her classmates, but she was confident that at least her potion was being exacted thus far. Kerry tried to put the time to the back of her head and forge on.

"Carefully add essence of firefly, one drop at a time, stirring 6 times counter-clockwise then clockwise twice in between each addition."
Kerry reached over for the spare piece of parchment she had just used and jotted herself a note to make sure she performed the stirring actions of 6 times counterclockwise 2 times each in between each firefly essence and not just once, as she knew she'd forget this otherwise.
With each essence of firefly Kerry marked her progress down as she stirred. "So far so good," she thought to herself, wiping her brow which was not perspiring over the hot flame of the cauldron. Now, what's next?" she read on.

"Reduce flame and simmer for 20 min before allowing potion to cool." Kerry reached over and gently reduced her flame, peering under the cauldron to make sure the flame was now at a simmer. She looked up at the clock on the wall to mark the time and cleaned up her desk of all the excess ingredients as she awaited the 20 minutes. Peering up at the clock again, with 2 minutes to go, Kerry prepared the vials to be filled with what she hoped was a successful potion.

"5, 4, 3, 2, 1...Kerry watched as the second hands ticked off the clock slowly. All her friends seemed to have finished their potions 5, even 10 minutes before her. Reaching down for her ladle, she filled her 2 vials to the brim, remembering that if she didn't - any splashing within the vial could set the potion off and she did not want to embarrass herself with that happening to her.

Kerry got up, and began to walk to the front of the desk. She nearly dropped her own vials as a classmates vial exploded a few feet away. Kerry brought her robes up to her eyes, blocking the blinding light, and gripping her own vials tightly as she did. As the light died down, Kerry hurried to the desk to hand in her vials before the same thing happened to her.

Returning to her desk, Kerry quietly turned off her cauldron flame and began to clean her work station.

Linda went to the professors desk and took two of the vials they would use. Once she was back at her desk she took a good look at the board. She knew if she didn't follow those instructions properly she would be in for it. She looked at the ingredients.

Ingredients:
Water (200mL)- potion base
Salt (6 g)- emits light
Billywig stings, dried, powdered (2)- excitation
Essence of firefly (3 drops)- aids in the production of light

She was extreamly interested in the Billywig stings; they seemed to have "a life of their own". She then looked at the instructions on the board again:

Instructions:
*Set water to boil and add salt, stirring clockwise until dissolved
*Powder billywig stings and add to boiling salt water, stir counter-clockwise 12 times, then clockwise twice and repeat six times
*Carefully add essence of firefly, one drop at a time, stirring 6 times counter-clockwise then clockwise twice in between each addition
*Reduce flame and simmer for 20 min before allowing potion to cool
*Carefully ladle potion into appropriately sized vessels

Linda took out her required potion and measured the 200 ml of water carefully. She then emptied it into her cauldron and set it on tht table. Linda then set a small fire under it and turned up the heat slighty to boil it faster and re-read the next line of instructions:

add salt, stirring clockwise until dissolved

She then noticed that it had begun to boil and instictively lowered the tempreture slighty so that it was still boiling but not too much. Then she added salt. Linda picked up her ladle and dipped it into the water then started stiring clockwise, concentrating so that she would not forget which direction. The salt finally began to disolve and Linda put her ladle down to read the next instrution.

*Powder billywig stings and add to boiling salt water, stir counter-clockwise 12 times, then clockwise twice and repeat six times

Linda put the stings into her motar and began to grind it slowly. She ended up with a fine powder which she added to her salted water. She read the instructions for the stirring an took a deep breath. Linda counted as she stirred by placing her finger on a point of the cauldron to remind her where she started. She stirred counter-clockwise 12 times then she stopped and stirred 2 times in the other direction: clock-wise. She wrote on a sheet of parchment the number one and began the stirring again; only this time ending by writing "2". Linda went on like this until she got to 6 and placed her ladle beside her. She read the next line.

*Carefully add essence of firefly, one drop at a time, stirring 6 times counter-clockwise then clockwise twice in between each addition

Linda picked up her bottle of Firefly essence and added a drop. Using the method she used for the stings she added 3 drops stirring 6 times counter-clockwise then twice clockwise once more. She wasn't sure if she should stir again at the end but read "in between each addition" and decided against it. She looked at the board once more:

*Reduce flame and simmer for 20 min before allowing potion to cool

Linda did as she should and lowered the tempreture. She then went to wash her hands and equipment she wouldn't need after that and packed up all her ingredents.

The potion looked passable, though Linda wasn't sure if it really was since the professor hadn't said anything about how it would look but she decided that she had followed the instuctions to her best ability. She threw out the piece of scrap parchment she used for counting and started copying notes of the board.

Not very long after the potion was simmered for long enough and Linda took it of her congured fire and put the fire out. She still hadn't finished with the notes so she continued until she was fairly sure that it was cooled. Linda ladled some of her potion into the two vials and stopperd them. She took them to the professors desk thinking it the right thing to do.

After briefly discussing the potion, Professor Branxton finally arrived at the hands-on portion of the class. Serena thoroughly enjoyed this part of the class. Though the lecture part was equally important, she felt more comfortable with the actual brewing of the potion.

Standing, she walked up to the professor’s desk and retrieved two vials before returning to her seat. First off, she measured and set up all of her ingredients in a row after writing down the ingredients and instructions onto a piece of parchment. Once that was accomplished, she turned up the flame and waited a few minutes for the water to begin boiling. Pouring the salt into the water, she began to stir clockwise several times to ensure complete dissolvement. As she picked her ladle from the pot, she spotted a few stray crystals of salt still clinging to the side of the cauldron. Quickly sweeping them into the rest of the mixture, she stirred a few more times before moving to the next step.

Oh, this was going to be a long one and very tricky at that. She must keep very careful count. Pouring the powdered billywig stings into the water, she began to stir, cautiously counting as she stirred the required number of times.

Next was the essence of firefly. Carefully squeezing out one drop, she watched as it fell into the pot. Placing it back off to the side, she stirred the potion six times counterclockwise and then two times clockwise. After this was completed, she added another drop, stirred the proper amount of times, added the last drop and once more stirred the number of times dictated by the instructions.

Reaching over, she slowly turned down the flame, waiting patiently for the full 20 minutes to pass. She turned off the flame at this point and waited a bit longer for the potion to sufficiently cool before filling each of the two vials with the potion. As she was filling the second vial, she heard a crash and instinctively turned her head with a wince. Crashes were never good.

Setting the two vials on her desk, she waited patiently for the professor’s inspection. She could only hope that she had brewed the potion successfully.

Yashu read the instructions and went to the professor's desk. He took took 2 vials from there. He put the water to boil. He added 6g of salt and stirred clockwise for one minute, (that was when the salt dissolved). He dried and powdered his 2 billywig stings and added it to the boiling salt water. He stirred counter-clockwise 12 times and clockwise 2 times. He then repeated those 2 bits of stirring 6 times. He added the first drop of the essence, stirred 6 times counter-clockwise and 2 times clockwise. He also did this with the second drop and then added the lost drop of essence of firefly. He reduced the flame and counted 20 minutes to allow the potion to cool. He finally poured the potion into the 2 vials, just enough so it wouldn't spill. He took the vials of potion to the professor's desk to see if he did it right and then sat back down at his seat.

Torie cried out as she was momentarily blinded by the vial of potion she had dropped. When her vision had finally cleared, aside from some minor spots in front of her eyes, Torie looked around for a broom and dustpan, stammering her apologies as she attempted to clean up the broken glass.

"I'm so..so..sorry, Professor. It..just slipped out of my hand! I'll..I'll clean it up immediately. Is there a dustpan somewhere?"

Professor Branxton walked amongst the desks as the students worked. He was pleased to see that despite the earlier interruptions, the students were hard at work and concentrating on what they were doing. As the last of the students were finishing up their work, he made his way back to the front of his desk and turned to address them. "Excellent work. Now, some of you have handed in both your vials already. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear before but, I wish you to hand in only one vial. The other vial we will be testing in a few moments. So, while everyone else finishes up their work, would those of you who handed both vials in to me please retrieve one? Thank you." With that he turned and moved around his desk to sit down.

Torie breathed a sigh of relief as she heard the Professor announce that they only needed to hand in one vial. Maybe this hadn't been such a bad accident after all. Her potion obviously worked. Stepping carefully around the broken glass, she handed in her vial, and spying a dustpan in a corner of the classroom, headed towards it. Stooping down, she retrieved it, and returned to the scene of her mess. Bending down, she carefully scooped the broken glass into the pan. She frowned as she looked around the room for a place to empty it.

"Excuse me, Professor, but where should I put the broken glass? I don't seen a bin."

Zaza hadn't handed even the first vial, but she was almost finished with the brewing. She carefully wrote a note:
Quote:
Charmelia Snape
and attached it to her vial. She knew, since she was a first year, she wouldn't have to be perfect. As soon as the Potion was ready she handed it to the Professor.

Phoebe picked up her other vial that was sitting on her desk. She, seconds earlier was pleased with her potion but now not so sure. It didn't seem to be the same colour as everyone around her potions. She was hoping they wouldn't have to drinl it to test it, that could go terribly wrong.

Erinelle walked down to Professor Branxton with one of her vials in her hand. She handed it to him with a cheeky, yet sheepish grin, her pale porcelain face an expression of 'i'm forgetful'.
"If i don't hand one in now," She explained, "I'll forget at the end." She said, before turning back to her seat.
Although, she saw Torie and smiled, "Ok, try 'Scorigfy'" She said to her quietly before going to her desk.

Kerry, realizing she was one of those who had handed in two vials, quickly got up and retrieved one of her vials and returned it to her desk- her heart beating a bit faster at the idea of testing her potion in front of others. Kerry hoped she brewed it correctly.

Sini wrote looked at all of her notes on the potion before beginning the process.

Quote:

She set her water to boil and waited for it to boil before adding in her 6g of salt. After a few minutes the water started to bubble, upon seeing that she added the salt, stirring clockwise. Waiting to make sure that the salt as dissolved; she gathered her powdered Billywig stings.

She wanted to make sure she completed this part properly; she was determined to make her first potion a success. She added the powdered billywig stings to her already boiling water. She stirred the mixture counter-clockwise 12 times, then clockwise two times. She repeated that repetition six times till the billywig stings were added completely.

Now it was time for the addition of essence of firefly, she added one drop at a time. Making sure to stir 6 times counter-clockwise then clockwise twice. She had to add in two more drops, both one at a time. Adding another drop she stirred the potion as instructed, 6 times both counter-clockwise then clockwise twice. Adding the last drop she completed the last stirring motions for the essence of firefly.

Then, reading her directions again, she lowered the flame allowing the potion to simmer. Leaving it for 20 minutes, she allowed the potion to brew. After the 20 minutes had passed she let the potion cool, before placing the potion into two viles.

Once it was cooled she ladled the potion into two viles, labeling them both with

Then she brought one up to the teachers desk, and returned to her seat waiting for further instructions before being able to test her potion.
