After briefly discussing the potion, Professor Branxton finally arrived at the hands-on portion of the class. Serena thoroughly enjoyed this part of the class. Though the lecture part was equally important, she felt more comfortable with the actual brewing of the potion.
Standing, she walked up to the professor’s desk and retrieved two vials before returning to her seat. First off, she measured and set up all of her ingredients in a row after writing down the ingredients and instructions onto a piece of parchment. Once that was accomplished, she turned up the flame and waited a few minutes for the water to begin boiling. Pouring the salt into the water, she began to stir clockwise several times to ensure complete dissolvement. As she picked her ladle from the pot, she spotted a few stray crystals of salt still clinging to the side of the cauldron. Quickly sweeping them into the rest of the mixture, she stirred a few more times before moving to the next step.
Oh, this was going to be a long one and very tricky at that. She must keep very careful count. Pouring the powdered billywig stings into the water, she began to stir, cautiously counting as she stirred the required number of times.
Next was the essence of firefly. Carefully squeezing out one drop, she watched as it fell into the pot. Placing it back off to the side, she stirred the potion six times counterclockwise and then two times clockwise. After this was completed, she added another drop, stirred the proper amount of times, added the last drop and once more stirred the number of times dictated by the instructions.
Reaching over, she slowly turned down the flame, waiting patiently for the full 20 minutes to pass. She turned off the flame at this point and waited a bit longer for the potion to sufficiently cool before filling each of the two vials with the potion. As she was filling the second vial, she heard a crash and instinctively turned her head with a wince. Crashes were never good.
Setting the two vials on her desk, she waited patiently for the professor’s inspection. She could only hope that she had brewed the potion successfully.
