Default Sugarplum's Gumball Machines

Graphic by Anna Banana

There are four gumball machines near the exit to the sweet shop. They have been charmed to accept wizarding money instead of muggle money. If you have any knuts in your pocket that you are just dying to get rid of, why not buy a few gumballs with them? All you have to do is place the two knuts inside the little slot, turn the knob, and watch as the gumball travels down the maze and to the little compartment at the bottom where you may receive your gumball. Enjoy!

Remember 2 knuts = 1 gumball!

Grace Paton was an excited little girl. Her mother had taken her to Diagon Alley and was letting them buy sweets. She was pretty sure her mother hadn't bargained on her slipping into the sweet shop and then just running off. "Come on Frankie...before mommy sees we're gone." Because that would not work out very well. Not that she was a naughty girl, but she knew her mommy wouldn't let her pick out lots of chocolates. Daddy would. Her daddy let her have whatever she wanted. But daddy wasn't here today unfortunately. She tossed her brunette hair over her shoulders as she wandered down the aisles. Then her eyes landed on the gumball machine. "Oh wow...." The nine year old beamed, before she skipped over to them. because she wanted some gumballs.

She frowned, having left her brother behind. She glanced over her shoulder, and beckoned him to come over. "Come on Frankieee." Because there mother was going to catch them soon and that was just not good at all.

My Daddy knows how much I love the stuff, he'd never not let me have it--except for during this term that just left but that's a long story and I got smuggled candy anyway so it didn't make a difference." The name Alexa Cambridge was synonymous with Candy. Candy bans would never work no matter who placed them. "How many cards do you have so far? I checked the official cards listing, I have at least three of every one of them," she'd been through a lot of chocolate frogs in her life. "I don't actually collect them though 'cause I don't see the point, but I keep the cards in a drawer in my room. Keeps them out of the way."

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a chocolate frog then began unwrapping it while she listened to his explanation. It was actually quite..."Neat!" He was already theeeere just not there. She wouldn't have run into him in that first week either because she was stuck in detention. good times, good times. "Not the being home-schooled part though. How come she wanted you home-schooled in the first place? Was she worried you wouldn't make enough friends? Or--or that you'd be picked on?? 'Cause that would probably never happen you know." She wouldn't consider the students at Hogwarts bullies, just...idiots, for the most part.

"But it's good you're coming back!!! We can hang out when I run into you!--if you'd like that is." BEAM.
"She likes to stay healthy," Tucker explained. He realized that he was probably making his mother seem like a crazy person - in reality, she wasn't THAT loony. "So we don't have sweets in the house. Healthy food is actually really good, especially when she makes it, but I don't see how a treat every now and then can hurt," he added with a grin. Of course, five pounds of licorice or 20 chocolate frogs was probably a bit more than a "treat" but who cared about technicalities. "And as for the cards...I don't know how many I have right now. Probably only two or three since I'm always on the lookout for Mum," he chuckled.

UGGH he really wished she hadn't asked him to EXPLAIN! Why couldn't she just leave it at he had to leave for a personal reason and just not question anything after that? If he was trying to avoid making his mother seem crazy, explaining WHY he wasn't there the past two years wouldn't help his cause.

"Well, I'm an only child. So she was probably having separation anxiety," he joked. "She's one of those people that thinks if she can do something better than someone else - she will."

Frankie Paton didn't like shopping with his mommy and sister. They usually went to all the boring, girly places like the robe shop down the street or that smelly pink place just a few doors down. It was days like today when he wished that his daddy would pretend to be sick so he could come with them to the alley. Then he and his daddy could have gone to all the cool places and bought a lot of loud and slimy things that would annoy his sister. But, no, he was the only boy in the group today. If they made him play dress up with them again, he was going to be loud and throw a fit so they would have to take him home.

But right now he was running after his sister, who was heading toward the candy shop. Well, that seemed a lot better than doing girly things. But she was going too fast. “Slow down, Gracie!” Frankie yelled, moving as quickly as his short legs would let him. “Mommy won’t find us here. There's too many –” The blond boy stopped talking when he caught up with Grace at that weird machine. “I want one of those thingies!”

Grace knew that her brother probably couldn't keep up with her. He only had little brother legs. And she had big sister legs, and so she could walk a lot faster than her. She didn't care though. She had sweets in her vision and she loved it. She was a little sweetie fiend. "Frankie!" She shook her head, spinning around. "Don't yell! Mommy will here you!" And she really didn't want her mommy to find them. Because she'd probably drag them to the robes shop. And she wanted Sweeties not robes right now. So she hoped her mother never found them. Or you know. Didn't find them until she'd gotten some awesome sweeties.

"Too many what?" She frowned, glancing down at her little mother. She hoped mommy didn't think that they were totally lost. Because that wasn't very good. She turned her attention back to the the sweeties. "I want one too." She nodded, looking up at the machine. "Two knuts..." She murmured, before reaching into her little bag that her mommy had given her. "Okay...." She pulled her hand back out, holding the little bits of loose change. "....which ones are the knuts?"

Lex snickered at that, not because it was sooooo funny that she couldn't help herself but because a thought hit her and it was very snicker worthy. "Healthy? And she's allowing you back at Hogwarts?" Cue more snickering. For the whole term Merlin knew how many times she actually had much in the way of healthy food. There was just too any other things at the table during meal times and the kitchen was always open for moooore snacking. "You remember what the food was like there, right?" A week was all anyone needed to remember the food.

"Oh?" Yet another curious thing about this boy. "I'm not going to assume you've only ever had two or three so, what'd you do with the cards you didn't keep?" She was just wondering. A terrible habit of hers; she liked knowing everything.

She began nomming on the chocolate frog while she listened to another one of his explanations.

Uh-huh..."Seems legit." There was a crunch then the head of the chocolate frog was gone. "My Aunt and Uncle are the same with my cousins, took a while for them to send one of them to school. The other's still young but he's hoping he gets sent to school too. I think Daddy had the same idea but I never took well to private tutoring sooo...yeah." She paused to have another bite. "Did you meet anyone before you got pulled?"

The boy did not like being so short when he was in public. All of these people made Frankie feel like he was the size of a goblin. At least he was an adorable goblin-sized being. He had been to the big money building one or two times with his daddy and knew that those things that ran the place were really ugly. So he had that good thing going for him. But it was so easy for people to not notice and step on him. It was a good thing that he was a very loud boy. People did not step on loud children.

A frown appeared on his face when Grace told him not to tell. How was he supposed to keep the people around them from stepping on him? He was about to yell some more, but his sister told him that their mommy would find them if he yelled. And then she pulled out her bag that had the coins in it! Frankie shrugged his shoulders at her question. Did he look like he knew how to deal with money? That was daddy and mommy's job. “I dunno. I just want candy!!”

Tucker grinned. "Yeah, she trusts me to make my own healthy decisions - too bad that won't happen," he chuckled. Well, for the most part. He WOULD still eat healthy most of the time because he wanted to keep up his toned body - he had almost two pack abs!

"Threw them out," he said with a frown. Such a sad thing to admit. "Although my godfather has a baby girl and he lets me give them to her. He won't tattle to my mum - come to think of it, he could probably have hoarded them for me and I wouldn't have gotten caught..." he said, voice trailing off as he thought about it. Oh well. Too late now!

And as for meeting people, he shook his head. "Nah, I had a feeling I would get pulled so I didn't bother," he explained. When you know how upset your Slytherin mum would get over her sure-to-be-Slythern son getting Hufflepuff, you knew your days were numbered. "But I'm going to change that this year! Just watch, I'm gonna rise up the ranks, become prefect someday, all-star Quidditch player...I've got BIG plans," he said with a grin.

He hoped the Gryffindor didn't think he was being cocky - he was just being his normal self.

This next thing that he said had her snickering too. He had a point there. Sometimes parents expected too much. Like her father expecting her to not spend all her galleons on candy before the Christmas break. Pfffft, see how well that turned out? Exactly. "I bet you can get away with tons of snacking too seeing as your Common Room's right by the kitchen!" GRIN. Though distance wasn't an issue seeing as the Gryffindors invaded the kitchens all the time anyway.

Oh? "I see, that's too bad, bet they would have come in handy." No matter how little value she saw in hers she never thought to throw them away because they could be used to bribe two of her bestfriends. "I don't suppose she has much use for them if she's only a baby, why don't you ask to have them back?" That way he wouldn't have to start his collection from scratch, see?

After hearing even more explanations--merlin this boy should have been a 'Claw, a good amount of the conversation was him explaining stuff--she decided he wasn't half bad; had a lot of spirit if you asked her. His grin at the end made her grin too.

"NEAT!! Can't wait to see just how much of that you actually accomplish. Seems do-able once you've got yourself a brain and a backbone!" She would assume he had both because otherwise it'd be a terrible waste of a good personality. "Honestly, the thought of being prefect makes me laugh." Not because it was a dumb idea but because she was possibly the last Gryffindor in the universe they'd ever give a badge to. Heh. Funny how something like that could amuse her.

"Oh yeah, I totally forgot about that!" Tucker said. He really had - he'd totally forgotten about how close the kitchens were to his sleeping quarters. That was perfect! A perk to being a Hufflepuff...he wondered what else he'd find out about his house that would make him grin from ear to ear.

He shrugged. "Nah, she's a toddler, she'll appreciate them someday. I want to start fresh," he explained. It was like one of those metaphor...things. Starting fresh, back at school, the world ahead of him!

He was starting to think his expectations for school might be a bit outrageous, but whatever.

"What, don't like the guys with the badge?" he asked with a grin when she said that thinking about being a prefect was amusing. Either that, or she was a troublemaker. Tucker didn't expect to be a brown noser or something at school, but still, he was going to be the best kid in his class - by the time prefect badges rolled around, they wouldn't be able to NOT give it to him!

"Did you? Well now you know to make plans! Ice-cream plans are especially good--oh and hot chocolate ones too if you plan to head to the kitchen. Most people don't like hot chocolate when it isn't around the winter season but I think you can enjoy it anytime." And this had NOTHING to do with her chocolate addiction, ahem, what? "Or do you prefer tea?" Lottie liked tea, the girl didn't fancy chocolate as much. Such a pity.

She didn't particularly get that; the whole caring about the fact that it was a toddler who'd appreciate things later on. That was most probably because of the baby at home. She still hadn't come to terms with that and consequently couldn't see the point in caring about something a kid wanted. Affection Suckers, all of them. "Suit yourself. Might be best to start over anyway, that way it'd be in sync with your starting school--can you imagine just how many chocolate frogs you'll be able to have once the term starts!!!" Like legit and there'd be no one to tell him otherwise!

Lex found his question a little curious and gave herself a moment's pause so she could think about it before answering. Honestly, she'd never thought about it that way before..."I wouldn't say that exactly, just, I don't like people thinking that just because they have a shiny piece of metal stuck to their robe they can push me around and tell me what to do. It's annoying, makes them annoying and makes the badge mean even less to me." It was that simple. She had a mind of her own and she liked being allowed to use it whenever she wanted to, lest she become like a certain Ravenclaw she could mention; brainless and without the ability to think for herself. "There are some cool badger holders too!"

"I like coffee and tea,"
Tucker said with a nod. "But coffee with lots of sugar and creme added - that's the only time mum puts sugar in anything," he chuckled. "Especially those flavored cremes and stuff...MMMMM. Hot chocolate is good too, but I prefer that during the holidays," he added. He'd never heard of someone liking it during the SUMMER. It was just too...hot for HOT chocolate.

Tucker smirked. "Well, that's good to hear. Have to admit though, the power would be fun. Don't worry, I won't abuse my power unless someone gets smart with me," he said smugly. Whoops there was his Slytherin side coming out.

"Well, I should probably get going," Tucker said with a sigh as he checked his watch. "I haven't even gotten my wand yet and I've been shopping for an hour," he shrugged. "Mum will kill me if I'm not home by dinner."

He grinned and pocketed his knuts, keeping them safe from the angry gumball machine and deciding to come back after his shopping trip to reward himself with sugar for completing his shopping list. "It was nice meeting you Alex, see you at school!" he said goodbye with a grin before pulling out his shopping list and heading out the door.

Coffee? She remembered that stuff. "I've only ever drank a cup of coffee once...Daddy won't let me do it again." She said with a sheepish smile. It was quite the experience too, the then 10 year old ended up running all over the house screaming, jumping on things and she couldn't sleep for days. This of course was to the detriment of those around her and it was agreed that she wasn't to be allowed near caffeine ever again. She shrugged just a bit before commenting on his chocolate reservations. "Chocolate is chocolate no matter what weather." But again, she didn't have a problem....she could stop whenever she wanted...sureeee...

"Well..." She gave that some thought. "It would be kinda neat to have all that power--it'd help me with my army you see. Probably wouldn't be all that terri--" Say what now? Lex tilted her head and stared over at him for a minute, trying to figure out whether she found that last bit funny or worrying. After a bit more staring she simply cracked a smile. "I'll hold you to that Mr. Future Prefect."

Oh but he was leaving now. "It was nice meeting you toooo!" See that right there? He waited until the interaction was done before saying that. Some people were just so odd. How would you know it was nice to meet someone until after you had a conversation with them?? They needed to think more and it was why she never returned the social compliment until she, herself, was sure that meeting the person had done more good than harm.

She had a feeling that one had a brain. Yup.

Candy. Candy. Candy.

The best thing in the entire world and there was nothing anyone could do nor say to change Fay's mind about that. Her absolute favorite candy was the gumballs at Sugarplum's Sweet Shop. There was nothing better in the entire world! Well...maybe chocolate frogs, but those didn't count. Chocolate frogs trump all.

The small, blonde girl skipped into the shop and made a beeline straight towards the gumball machine. In her hands she had a pouch FULL of knuts and a plastic bag she had snagged at the counter that she planned on filling to the brim with gumballs! After all, she would be had Hogwarts for nearly a whole year, she would have to stalk up. And there was no way her father would send her any... meanie.

Faylinn reached the machine and there was no line. Perfect! She popped to knuts in, turned the knob, and waited for her first gumball. She watched it as it traveled the spiral, finally reaching the end. Finally! The eleven year old eagerly reached down and quickly shoved the thing into her mouth. Complete bliss...

So Benzi did feel bad. REALLY he did. But Mummy just didn't realise that he knew Diagon Alley INSIDE OUT. Sometimes when she'd take him to work with her he'd sneak in here and just wander around all over the place. Of course, he'd never actually told her that - she would have gotten all disappointed in him for straying and not doing as he was told, and then she would have been sad which would have made HIM sad which would have just been BAD so the whole thing was best avoided.

Five minutes ago, Benzi had pickpocketed his mother's purse for a few coins - he'd have to look later to see how much he'd taken - and ran off STRAIGHT to his favourite place in the world; the GUMBALL MACHINES. Okay, perhaps not his FAVOURITE place, but definitely one Mummy would never let him go to.

He did feel bad. But it was hard to feel bad when he had GUMBALLS. As soon as he laid his eyes on the shop all his guilt was forgotten. Benzi sprinted through the doorway and zipped past the isles, making a beeline STRAIGHT for the machines. He was so eager to get his YUMMY GUMBALL that he didn't realise someone was already there.

"OUF!" Colliding headfirst with a person roughly his height, the eleven year old sent them both tumbling to the floor in a mess of tangled legs and flailing arms.

Oopsie?

"AHHH!"

She hadn't even seen him coming. Nope. She had been getting ready to insert another 2 knuts into the machine when a flying force came out of know where really, and knock right into her! She and this mysterious force were knocked to the ground, and despite Faylinn's most valiant efforts to keep the tightest grip on her money bag possible, knuts still went flying out in all direction when her hold was loosened by the impact of the fall.

"Owwwww!" Fay grounded as she brought her hand to head, checking for any injuries. That was one nasty fall. She looked around and noticed a young boy, no older than herself, also on the floor. He had done it... The girl slowly sat up so she could properly glare at the boy and grumbled, "Do you even watch where your going when you walk?" Okay, well technically he was running but still. And Faylinn was one to talk... She had already bumped into two people today, but she had walked into them, not full out charged into a shop while they were trying to stalk up on gumballs!

Speaking on gumballs... Fay looked down at her money back, which was feeling considerably lighter, and saw just about every knut that had previously been in her back, spread out across the floor. NO! That was her gumball money! She needed that! Ignoring the boy, the eleven year old quickly picked her self up and started crawling across the floor, scooping up every knut she could find. She didn't care how ridiculous this looked, this was important! This was basically her life savings in knuts that were going to be transferred over into gumballs. Or at least they were going to be until this kid came knocking her to the ground and making her lose all her money...

"Ouch."

His wrist was sore, he had banged his knee against the floor and the girl had screeched RIGHT in his ear. And yes, it was a girl because only girls could make that sound. Even MUMMY made that sound sometimes. He half wanted to just continue lying there, but the GIRL got up so he had to as well. It was a GIRL after all - he couldn't be in more pain than her!

Jumping to his knees YEAAAAAOOOUUUCHH, he scrunched up his face at her words. "I wanted a gumball..." he stated with a shrug, not really seeing the point in apologising. He hadn't done it on PURPOSE.

It was only then that he noticed the sea of knuts on the floor, as the girl began to pick 'em up like someone from St. Mungo's. He'd been there once, after he'd played with Uncle Jake's wand. Some people there were really scary.

He should probably help. Mummy would want him to help. "Er... Do you, er, need me to, um, help you?"

The blonde scoffed and rolled her eyes as she continued to pick up the fallen knuts. Well of course he wanted a gumball. So did she. Which would explain why she had been standing in front of the GUMBALL MACHINE when he had so rudely ran into her. Maybe if he had even asked nicely she would have let him go infront of her instead of waiting for her to get done since that would have taken FOREVER based on the amount of gumballs she had planned on getting. At least she still has the one in her mouth.

Did she want him to help her? Well duh! It was the least he could do! Fay turned around and stared at him and nodded, "Yeah. Helping is the most logical thing to do in a situation like this when your at fault..." Maybe Faylinn was being a bit nasty, but at the moment she didn't care. Those gumballs were her life line.

The two of them must have been a sight to see. The young boy and girl on the floor in front of the gumball machine surrounded by tons of bronze knuts. Hopefully none of them rolled under any of the displays, because Fay would not be reaching underneath them, there could be spiders down there. Nope! The boy could do that for her if it came to that!

Jeez. This girl NEEDED to take a chill pill. "Oi, relax. Didn't do nothing on purpose ok?" Benzi gave her a LOOK, then with a sigh began hunting for knuts, picking them up and haphazardly depositing them next to the girl. He was HELPING.

Mummy would be proud.

After he'd picked up AT LEAST twenty knuts, he looked up longingly at the gumball machine before an idea struck him. There were like TWO THOUSAND BAJILLION knuts here. The girl wouldn't miss a few if he took just enough for one gumball right?

...

Mummy would definitely NOT be proud. In fact, Benzi suspected that she would be really disappointed in him. Remembering the last time she'd been really disappointed in him, the eleven year old swiftly dropped the idea. That had NOT been fun.

"How many knuts do you even HAVE here?!" he asked the girl, mainly to get his mind off taking her money.

Aidan actually wasn't here for candy. For once? He had plenty at home already, and didn't want to carry it around the rest of his day of school shopping. Besides, all the chocolate - because he would most likely get mostly chocolate - would melt in the summer heat.

Instead, today, Sugarplums' was just a pit stop. He only ducked in for the gumballs. One would surely last him a few hours, keeping his sugar up, and mind on the task at hand.

He dropped his two knuts into the slot and turned the knob, hoping for a green one.

Deep breath in. Deep breath out.

She hated to admit it, but the boy was right. She did need to relax maybe just a tinsy bit. But it was kind of difficult! This boy had certain talent at getting under her skin and she had only just met him... And she guessed it wasn't on purpose or anything like that, but none of that changed the situation. At lease he was actually helping out now.

"I don't know. I didn't bother to count them all!" That would require work and math, something Fay didn't believe in during the months of June through August. There had to have been at least fifty knuts in her bag though before they were knocked to the floor... "But we're almost done..." There were only a little under half of the mess remaining. And thankfully no body else had bothered the two of them during this little fiasco. Fay didn't need to draw the attention of any nosy adults. If she did, her father might take away all her gumballs! Now that would be a fiasco...

It was quiet for a moment as Faylinn resumed picking up her money. She glanced at the boy every once in a while before finally breaking the silence. Fay couldn't stand awkward silences... "So how old are you Zippy?" She didn't bother asking his name. She was going to call him Zippy, but he did seem to be around her age. Maybe if she was lucky he was a year younger or older than her and she would have to have classes with him at Hogwarts...

"Well that wasn't very smart. How do you know you won't lose any?!" Benzi blinked at her, truly confused by this apparent display of stupidity. You can't NOT count money! What if people stole from you? What if you lost it, like this girl was about to? Mummy always told him to take money very seriously. It didn't grow on trees, and you couldn't magically create more of it. Mummy sometimes didn't have supper with him because she needed to make some money. At least that's what Lucas always said when he stayed over at Uncle Jake's house.

They WERE almost done, and for that Benzi was relieved. Picking up the last few that had rolled off somewhere close to the shelves, he dropped them unceremoniously beside her. THERE. They were done. He was about to get up and get his YUMMY GUMBALL when the girl opened her mouth.

ZIPPY?!

"What's it to you, frownyface?" he spat back at her, HIGHLY unamused by her new nickname for him. He therefore decided to give her one of his own. And she actually did have a frowny face so it all worked out.

Instead, today, Sugarplums' was just a pit stop. He only ducked in for the gumballs. One would surely last him a few hours, keeping his sugar up, and mind on the task at hand.

He dropped his two knuts into the slot and turned the knob, hoping for a green one.
Sophie didn't really need any sweets today. Her tummy was content and she could still taste her toothpaste from the morning, but she wanted... something. She almost made a run for the Droobles, but she could save some money, despite what any stalker who followed her through her day would have thought. She'd prove it - she was pleasantly surprised to spot only one person near the gumball machines when she entered the sweet shop.

Marching over to the machine right next to the boy, Sophie plucked her two knuts into the slot - she eyed the taller boy next to her as a wonderful pink gumball began to travel down his machine's maze, to which she uttered a simple "lucky" - then spun the handle, hoping for pink or purple. Or maybe the machine would malfunction and she would get both. Or ALL the gumballs.

But, of course, a nice, midnight blue gumball began to tumble around and around through the maze. That was... okay, she supposed, but she didn't want it. She already began to dig through her velvet pouch for two more knuts. She'd keep trying till she was all out.

He could only spare the girl a moment's glance because he had to keep his eyes on the machine. Otherwise he wouldn't be able to watch the ball roll down. And let's face it - you never got too old for that. It was the best part.

Except for when your gumball was PINK. A soft, barely audible sigh left Aidan's lips the same moment the girl expressed how lucky he was. Only her reaction to his gumball was perfectly audible and caused the to-be-Fourth year to smirk as he bent down and retrieved the ball from the opening.

He didn't eat it yet, though. He was waiting for the little girl, who seemed to want his gumball, to find out what her fate would be, rolling the pink ball from finger-space to finger-space as he did so. When he saw the blue ball begin its way through the maze, he mimicked her, uttering a soft, "Lucky," and giving her a side glance, smirk still present. "Trade ya?" Then she could keep her knuts and they'll both be happy.

Blue wasn't the worst color in the world, Sophie supposed as the gumball continued to tumble through the maze. Maybe... maybe, she thought, it might even be an omen for things to come! Maybe she WAS going to be a Ravenclaw like she thought! She knew her parents saw her Gryffindor traits even more, but she could just feel the Ravenclaw!

Lucky?

Sophie turned to just blink up at the boy next to her. She was lucky? Did he want a blue gumball? She turned his gaze down to the gumball between his fingers, and figured... well, maybe it was at least better than pink to him. But she WANTED his pink one! Why hadn't he picked the machine she was at in the first place? Then she could've gone to his and gotten her pink one on the first try!

But... this one was a problem-solver. Sophie's eyes lit up as she popped the gumball from the slot and held it out to the boy excitedly, her other palm facing up to hopefully accept the pink one. "Really? Really, really, really? Can we?" Pause. "I should have you know... this gumball that I got might've sealed my fate. I wanted a purple or pink but instead I got a Hogwarts house color and that's where I'm going soon." Completely logical. "So if you have any problems with prophecies or Ravenclaw house, I'd proceed with caution." Not that she didn't want to KEEP the blue one. She just wanted him to know how honored he should be to have it, really.

Chuckling, Aidan let the girl ramble on. He tried to keep up, but only half understood what she was trying to say. Something about wanting pink, but getting Ravenclaw, and if he wanted it, he oughtn't have any problem with the House. Well......he didn't.

His smirk faded into a true, yet small, smile as he picked up the blue gumball and placed the pink one in her other hand. "I'm in Ravenclaw, so I'll take my chances. Cheers." He lifted the gumball slightly in a mock toast and popped it into his mouth.

No second guessing now, little girl.
