SS25: 25 Rose-y Moments For The Holidays

It’s the holiday season and in honor of the Holiday Ficlet Challenge, I’ve decided to use an original SSRPG family started many moons ago, with Amelia Rose (yes the same one who’s the current Potions Mistress). These ficlets will be inspired by any one of numerous Rose Family members that I play. If a spouse / sibling played by another RPer is mentioned, will credit accordingly.

Drabble #1 - Prompt #25 - Ugly Sweater

“Seriously?” Tiffany cried out, after opening the usual symmetrical boxes that her and her siblings got every year. Frankly she was tired of the gaunty knit sweaters that she’d been receiving for as long she could remember.


She loved everything about the Christmas season - the cookie decorating, the music, sitting by the fireplace - but the sweaters she could seriously do without. The giant ‘R’ on the front signaling that she was a Rose. Don’t get her wrong, she was proud to be a Rose and the legacy of her parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and all before her. But the sweaters.

She never wore them except for the annual picture that was required with her siblings and older she got, the sillier her face became, showcasing her displeasure for this unfortunate tradition. Why’d it have to sweaters? Why couldn’t it be cutsey pajamas?

Drabble #2 - Prompt #19 - Fruitcake
{Flashback featuring Amelia, roughly age 11 and Aaron, age 4/5}

19. Fruitcake

Young Amelia was sitting in the living room reading a book, as she tried to bide the time until Christmas Dinner was ready. She would have offered to help, but their mother was always fussy about the cooking help and she’d much rather help by staying out of the way. She didn’t need the headaches of her mother’s scolding that she was cutting the carrots the wrong way.

She turned another page in her book, just as her young brother who was a mere four or five years old - the youngest of the Rose clan - decided to come running into the room and climbing on the couch where Amelia was sitting. “Vrroooomm, vroom… “ He said, making car noises as he was holding one of the metal cars in his hand.

“Aaron, honestly, do you have to be such a fruitcake? Go play with Alex.” She rolled her eyes, sliding the bookmark into the page as she knew reading time was officially over.

Drabble #3 - Prompt #9 - Mistletoe

It probably came as no surprise that Carsyn thoroughly enjoyed all the holidays. Yet there was something different in the air when it came to Christmastime. The brunette hummed along as she hung the stockings in her flat, not the least bit surprised when there was a knock at her door. Probably her sister or a friend. She’d promised them fresh cookies as she always did every year whenever they visited. Which might be why she was always in such a good mood this time of year.

“It’s open,” she called, not really bothering to look over to see who it was. It was a terrible security habit, but should it be someone nefarious, well let’s just say they’d be met with some foul curses.

“You should really lock your door,” Jude said coming through the door.

Carsyn shook her head. “It’s a fairly safe neighborhood and besides, then you wouldn’t be able to just enter. Besides you should really look up before entering,” she smirked, waiting for him to notice the holiday plant she’d just conjured above his head after hearing his voice. Anyone over the age of ten basically knew what mistletoe meant.

Drabble #4 - Prompt #10 - Bells

“Jingle bells, jingle bells…. jingle all the way ….” Amelia sang out, not even bothering to care how off-key her tune was. She truly loved Christmastime and being with her family. Even if sometimes they drove her absolutely bonkers, she loved it even more as an adult and getting to spend time with her brothers and nieces and nephews that she didn’t get to see as often as she liked, especially now that she was at Hogwarts for 10 months out of the year.

“O’ver the fields we go… where Mia smells all day!” Aaron retorted back in his childish grin. Even though he was a grown adult now with three kids (headed off to wizarding school soon), there was something nostalgic about teasing his big sister the way he used to when they were kids.

“Dashing to the loo, hey!” Alex added on, right on cue, kissing his little sister on the forehead. “Happy Christmas sis. You ought to know decades later we’re still gonna tease you.”

Drabble #5 - Prompt #16 - Plum Pudding

“Tiffany Cornelia Rose.” Laurel stated coming in to the kitchen to catch one of her children literally sitting on the counter, licking her fingers.

Tiffany glanced over to where her mother had entered, trying to brain an excuse. She could blame it on Jonny or Ariadne, except for the fact that her siblings were nowhere in sight. They’d still been sleeping this morning when the small ten year old snuck out of bed at four thirty this morning and sleepwalked her way to the kitchen where she found the pudding her mother had prepped last night.

The pudding that she’d devoured in twenty minutes and was using her fingers to lick the bowl.

“I ….. I’ll … I couldn’t sleep.” She admitted guiltily. Her mother, being a seer, she couldn’t very well lie to in the same way she could to her father. “I’ll help you make more. Sorry.”

“It’s also the fact that you’re sitting on the counter,” she said through narrowed eyes. “Get down.”

Tiff didn’t need to be told twice, as she hopped off the counter, placing the empty bowl in the sink and washing her hands. “By the way, there was a little too much sugar.”

Drabble #6 - Prompt #21 - Snowman

“Do you wannnaaaa build a snowman, come on let’s go and play!!” Young (probably 5 or 6 years old) Carsyn sung aloud, probably off-key, as she plopped down on her sister’s bed. They’d just had a muggle family movie night, watching the classic century-old film and Carsyn couldn’t get the lyrics out of her head.

“Syn, please, go back to bed,” Carys groaned throwing one of her pillows at her sister. “There isn’t even snow yet.”

Carsyn shook her head and threw the pillow back. “That’s where you’re wrong. I asked dad and he said there was magic that could help in creating fake snow. So come on!! Please! We can build something else. Maybe snow twins! Or uh … an igloo or snow fort? I won’t stop until you say yes!!” She was relentless and Carys knew it.
