Default Greenhouses

Greenhouses

The greenhouses house any and all plants the Department of Ecological Regulation and Protection is currently working on, both indigenous and foreign, ranging from roses to cherry blossoms. This is where the botanists work their magic - literally and figuratively. A place where potions ingredients and rare plants are being grown and where the research and development team conduct their experiments. After the incidents under Nickles' reign, some of the more aggressive plants have been quarantined into a separate smaller greenhouse, to be tended to only by those specifically assigned to the task.

If you do not work for the Department of Ecological Regulation and Protection, you are NOT permitted to enter any of the greenhouses without being accompanied by a DERP-employee; unless you have been given explicit permission by the department head.

Should you find any of the greenhouses to be short on supplies of any kind, please contact one of the greenhouse caretakers.

Even after a full year in her position, relying on someone else to do what might be considered the 'little' things still felt so foreign to her. In her previous post, she had not had a personal assistant. And while she often felt bad that perhaps she was not giving Jordan enough to do, she tried to make up for it as often as she could be finding other tasks that she knew he'd be able to handle that would be even more of a help to her. Setting up for the brunch had seemed something easy enough to do on her own. Though she'd probably accept his assistance later with the clean up - at least in regards of getting whatever was left of the food distributed to other departments.

Her attention returned to the Healer in attendance, and she gave him a smile at his polite greeting. "Please, Sookie is fine." She'd grown rather accustomed to nickname over her birth given. The only people that really seemed to consistently call her Ho-Sook was her sister and their parents. At the question of planting, which was also a great reminder to announce to the rest of the group they'd been trapped, she gave a nod. "That we are. I'm not quite certain how it happened, but all our floo crops seemed to disappear with the shortage as well." As for the quality... well, River had certainly hit the nail on the head of her worry with his speculation on that. She would have loved to been able to say she had full confidence in the seedlings but... the market was very short in supply on this as well and these were about all she and her assistant had been able to find. "I imagine they'll do the job." She hoped that came out with some semblance more of confidence than what she felt.

But she wasn't confident on the fact that it might have either.

Figuring she would save the other attendants from uncomfortable small talk (she truly was horrible at this host thing, wasn't she?), it was time to jump right into it - though of course everyone was welcome to take their time with socializing and finishing their food before they started to get their hands dirty. Clearing her throat and clasping her hands in front of her, Sook raised her voice the slightest bit to be heard. "Hello, hello all and thank you for coming! I hope you are enjoying the provisions! As I'm sure all have noticed, we're in need of some replacement floo powder these days due to the recent shortages - and luckily DERP was able to procure some new seeds. Given the urgency of need, we've invited you all here with the hope you might be willing to assist with a handful here and there in the dirt." Truly, the littlest bit helped. "However, please do not feel you need to assist with the planting if you do not want to - we're just as happy to have seen friendly faces. If you are up for a bit of playing in the dirt however, whenever you're ready handheld shovels can be located over here next to the seed bags. Our best fertilizer have already been spread in these beds," She indicated the three long rows. "And if you have any questions at all, you can ask myself or any of the other present DERP employees."

With a warm smile towards them all, she proceeded to move off to grab herself a shovel and begin the word. Lead by example, right?

Sophie didn't know why she was going to DERP to help with planting floo powder seeds since she was an Ambassador with other important international stuffs waiting to be delt with, and she really did not have green thumbs. Her plants usually died. The blonde however stepped out of the lift on level 4, and proceeded into the greenhouses just in time for the female department head to give out planting instructions that seemed simple enough to execute. Sophie got a shovel, and a bag of seeds before heading over to towards the other woman to ask some questions. "Excuse me! How deep does the floo powder seeds need to be planted in the soil? Shall they be watered too?"

The sounds of scratching, leaves russtling and was that something that broke echoed through the otherwise quiet level four floor on this early monday morning. The sounds of scratching, leaves russling and crashing things intensified as the minutes trickled on.

If someone came to investigate the sounds would be found to be coming from the greenhouses, and wasn't that just an awful lot of vines and plant appendages covering the door?

Violet entered the fourth floor from the lifts with her large handbag hanging over one arm, and a steaming tea cup in the other. To be the woman in charge was something she was still getting used to as she scanned the floor for activity. It was awfully quiet this morning except for some scraping, and crashing sounds that she couldn't place. Hmm? Where was that coming from? Violet hadn't gotten any owls or information from employees about new arrivals off either the creature or plant kind over night had she?

Taking out her wand as a precaution she headed towards the omnious sounds that grew louder and louder as she came closer to the greenhouses. The vines and plant appendages that covered most of the door caused her to pause momentarily before she casted firmly. "Diffindo!"

Mondays, did anyone enjoy them? Darej was arriving in to begin his shift in the office. He figured he would start his day checking on the creatures holding room, make sure the charms were still in place after feeding and cleaning, then get to his desk to finish up some approval on cases. He stopped at the sound of rustling followed by crashing noises. Oh no, not again. Looks like the dogs were out again.... or not. Those sounds weren't coming from the Holding room this time.

Darej then heard from a distance Violet, his new boss, throwing spells which prompted him to set his bag aside for now. Heading in the direction of the noises into the herbology section, where he could see the door to the greenhouses enveloped in branches. "Whoa," He said out of reflex, "Ordinarily, I'd say good morning Violet, but it looks to be anything but one," In his attempt to make light of the situation to relieve stress, "Diffindo," While he wasn't quite the plant expert, he could feel the adrenaline of the unknown kicking in him ready to assist.

"Whoa,"

Yes, that was her sentiment exactly too. Flashing a half smile over her shoulder at Darej that had arrived to help with the branch situation Violet said as she carefully set her large handbag, and teacup down on the floor to have more room to move incase they got attacked. "Hello Darej, and no this is not what I had pictured to meet this morning. I fear we have a plant situation in the greenhouse to deal with unless you know of any creatures that might have escaped the cells overnight?" Violet already guessed what Darej's answer was going to be so she turned her focus to the greenhouses again. "Alahomora!" she murmured, as she stepped forward to open the door into the greenhouse before heading inside to face whatever was causing the loud scratching and crashing noises.

Jordan stood at the entrance of the smaller, isolated greenhouse. He carefully adjusted his protective gloves, their thick dragon-hide material ensuring no thorn, spike, or tendril could pierce through. Once he verified that the gloves were secure, he pushed open the heavy door and stepped inside, the door creaked shut behind him.

Brown eyes quickly surveyed the array of botanical denizens before him. To his left, the Venomous Tentacula writhed lazily, its barbed tendrils sensing his presence but held at bay by a containment charm. On his right, a cluster of Snargaluff pods lay dormant, their thorny husks tightly closed. Further along he spotted the hybrid he had cultivated for university just a few years ago, which he had dubbed as a Snapping Bloomcabbage. A smile appeared on his face as he reminisced the months it had taken him to perfect the crossbreed.

Today, however, the botanist's main focus was elsewhere, a more recent one of his projects that he was developing for the Oceanoizardry division. Tucked away in a corner was a sizable tank filled with salt water. Jordan leaned over slightly to properly gaze at the slimy green plant that had sprouted a large red flower.

Satisfied with its progress, he straightened up and then submerged his hand into the tank, his motions deliberate and calming. "Easy now," he whispered, his voice barely above a murmur, as he moved slowly to collect a clipping of one of the leaves, hopefully without provoking the flower.

On what should be a quiet late sunday afternoon ear curling screams are coming from within the greenhouses that require immediate action! If you're daring enough to enter the greenhouses you'll be faced with the shocking sight of 30 or so injured and screaming baby mandrakes, lots of broken pots, other dead or half dead flowers and plants and the entire greenhouses in total dissarray. The baby mandrakes have been full at work since they were brought in by a law enforcement team after lunch. Oh, dear how shall this end?

Becky's mind was nowhere near work.

White. She was thinking about white again.

But not sterile flat white... layered whites. Soft ivory silk beneath sheer organza. Embroidered valerian along the hem. Tiny baby's breath stitched into the sleeves. Could she charm the thread to release the faintest hint of spiced vanilla and toasted marshmallow when she moved? Would that be too much? How many white flowers could she incorporate into her dress before it stopped being ethereal and started being overwhelming?

She turned down the central aisle between the foreign cultivation beds, fingertips grazing the edge of a pot of cherry blossom saplings recently stabilized after transport. A sound threaded through her thoughts, but she did not fully register it. She stepped further in, humming all the way, and a sharper series of sounds split the air.

That was—

She rounded the partition separating the main cultivation space from the mid-level propagation tables and walked directly into devastation: baby mandrakes thrashed in the wreckage of shattered pots. Soil coated the stone floor in uneven clumps. Uprooted roses lay snapped at the stem. A tray of rare foreign cutting, months of research, had been overturned completely. Becky froze just long enough for the shriekings to hit her properly.

Her stomach dropped and her hands flew to her ears too late.

Her vision blurred at the edges, the greenhouse light warping slightly as dizziness crashed through her.

"Oh— my— stars—"

Her knees wobbled and she staggered forward, one hand gripping the edge of a workbench for stability. The screaming intensified as one of the uprooted mandrakes caught sight of her and shrieked in her direction. Her world lurched and her knees hit the ground harder than she meant them to. Another wave of vertigo rolled through her and she swayed, dangerously close to blacking out while her hands pressed firmly to her ears in a fervent attempt to mute the sounds even a little.

Bridal whites and valerian embroidery had vanished entirely from her thoughts, replaced instead with the distinct and humbling realization that she might faint in her own greenhouse.

Quite the Head Botanist she was... brought to her knees by toddlers with leaves for hair.
