Default The Barns

The Barns - Grounds

Down a path not far from the entrance to the Common stands an expansive barn, granite like the main building but liberally adorned with wooden structures. Pass the wide doorway, and you find yourself in the main hallway of Ilvermorny’s barn, lined with stalls holding the school’s larger creatures as well as smaller pens for those who take up less space. To the right of the main doors is a tack room holding tools for cleaning as well as equipment for interacting with Ilvermorny’s animal inhabitants, and outside the doors at the opposite end of the hallway is a pasture used for exercising as well as allowing the creatures fresh air when weather permits.

Heath was wandering about the common when he decided to visit the animals. Maybe it was his brother's influence that got him into checking them out lately, but no matter, that's where he was heading. The crunch of the ground beneath the soles of his boots sounded the more he walked along the area until he reached the barns.

If it wasn't the sight it was definitely the scent that made it clear this was the place to be. Heath didn't really have a specific animal in mind to visit when he arrived. There were the horses and the usual creatures. Today he felt like petting the pen of dogs and puppies. Tying his hair back, he entered in, letting a few friendly huskies jump up at him. A small smile formed on his face as he stroked the fur.

Even if it was still a little cold outside, the snow was starting to melt and tender sprouts of green were beginning to peek through. And that meant it was a good time to collect certain potions ingredients that Takoda knew were best harvested at certain times of the year.

The seventh year was taking a stroll along the grounds looking for tangled sorrel sprouts and fairy moss, pausing only when he heard a rumble and shake of the ground. He was fairly used to the mini quakes at school that had been periodic throughout the past year or so, though he noticed that they seemed worse during the warmer months. He wasn't sure that held any significance though, even if it was starting to warm up again.

As he bent down to examine a flash of green beneath a patch of melting snow to see if it was a growth of fairy moss, something else caught Takoda's eye - a rather large egg. It seemed to be cushioned by... yes, that was fairy moss. But the egg... he wasn't sure what that was and if he should just leave it alone. But it really did seem out of place.

Her final school year saw Jade being outdoors a lot more often. She wouldn't exactly consider herself an 'outdoorsy' kinda person, but then again, it wasn't like she enjoyed being secluded indoors either. The weather was nice, and so the brunette was out and about with a book or two in her bag, just in case she got a little bored.

Hopefully that wouldn't be the case, and she considered herself lucky when she saw Takoda closely examining... something. Something she couldn't see. So, of course, she got closer and leaned in a little. "Is that yours?" She casually asked as a means of letting him know she was there, watching. She obviously didn't think it was his, not in the literal nor the figurative sense. But yeah, hey hi hello, Takoda, you were not alone anymore.

Takoda was still trying to decide what he thought about the egg - what kind of egg it was and whether he should do something with it - when he heard a voice next to him. Silently cursing himself for not hearing her before she was there as he prided himself on being extremely observant to the point of never being snuck up on, he turned slightly to see who was there.

"I certainly didn't lay it," he said with a wry smile, joking in his very deadpan sort of way that sometimes made it difficult to tell if he was truly serious or not. "But no, it is not mine." He glanced over at the barn close by, then back at Jade again. "It seems out of place though. I'm wondering if we should leave it here or go ask Miss Crittenden about it." Since she was the Creature Care expert, she'd probably know the best course of action.

Haha, yes, the sorta answer she was expecting. "What a shame." Jade smirked, fixed her bag over her shoulder and finally bent down next to him to examine the egg a bit better herself.

"Interesting." She remarked, eyeing it closely. She was still looking at it when he said something about Miss Crittenden. "No, no, what!? No, we can figure this out ourselves. What's the use of being in our final year if we can't figure this out without help?" Jade said in good fun. She was up for the challenge and besides, even if they did get it wrong, so what? That was the best way to learn, surely. "Did you see anything around it when you found it? A creature of sorts?" The girl asked Takoda, now placing both hands on the ground to lean in even closer to the egg and to look around it for markings of any kind.

Takoda allowed the hint of a smirk to appear on his lips, appreciating her quick response, and he stepped back out of the way so Jade could get a closer look at the egg. Not everyone appreciated his dry humor so he was secretly pleased when someone could.

And he shrugged when she disagreed with his suggestion. He didn't really care either way, just thought the Creature Care teacher would be the expert and wasn't sure he wanted to be saddled with a burden if it ended up that way. "All right, suit yourself then," he agreed with a short chuckle.

"No, I haven't seen anything," he answered after Jade asked a few investigative questions. "I just got here actually. There's just this fairy moss, but I don't think it's a nest." More like the egg rolled here or something, not intentionally placed, but what did he know. "It's pretty large, so that might narrow it down too." It clearly didn't belong to a small animal.

His dry humour - and the fact he didn't drag the joke on when it reached its peek nicely - was very much appreciated by Jade too, and something she constantly took good notice of when it happened. If only everybody had that class.

But now the matter at hand was getting more and more interesting. "It wasn't laid here. It wasn't dropped from above as it's very much whole still. No scratches." The girl finally reached out a hand and gently touched the shell. "Not particularly warm either." Which was a relief as she now knew for certain it hadn't just come off some animals' inside and/or underneath not too long ago. "Thankfully." She added, retracting her hand but still keeping her eyes on it as she studied it some more. "I'm no creature expert," clearly, "but if I had to guess I'd say an ostrich." Was she joking? Hard to tell. "Or an Occamy? Given where we are." She gestured around the grounds of their magical school.

"What do you say?" And also, how would they confirm it without looking like suspicious nerds taking such an egg into the library?

Takoda continued to peer down at the egg as Jade began speculating about it. She was making some very good observations though he didn't have much to add. "I don't think it was purposely left here either," he did eventually say after thinking it over, then crouching down a bit closer to the egg. "I'm not a creature expert either, but this patch of snow and moss doesn't make for the best nest." Which begged the question of why it was here at all.

"An ostrich?" Takoda raised an eyebrow as he looked back up at her, then cast a slow glance around the grounds. "I'd say an ostrich would be pretty far from home." Deadpan, again. But an occamy might make more sense, if only.. "I'm not sure the egg is silver enough," he started as he rubbed a thumb over the shell as if to rub some dirt off of it. It definitely had something of a sheen to it, but he was unsure. "Do they get more silver as they mature?" Like by the time they baby was ready to hatch? He might have been absent from class the day they learned that.
