A while ago, there was a rumuor going around about Dan Radcliffe appearing as Alan Strang in the play Equus. The rumour was debunked, however, as he was not in the play at that time due to his filming schedule. It has now been confirmed that Dan will be in the play, along with fellow HP actor Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon).
Dan sent the following message to DR.com and DR.co.uk: Quote:
I'm really excited to be part of this production and thrilled to be working with Richard Griffiths again. This is obviously a huge departure for me as an actor, but Equus is such an amazing play that this really was an opportunity not to be missed. Rehearsal starts in January and I am very much looking forward to working with Thea Sharock who is an incredibly talented director. I only hope I do the role justice.

Peter Shaffer's Equus first premiered in 1973 in London, England and won a multitude of awards. Equus focuses on the relationship between seventeen-year-old Alan Strang (Radcliffe), who has blinded six horses with a spike, and Martin Dysart (Griffiths), a middle-aged psychiatrist who tries to figure out what drove Strang to commit the crime.
The play itself is quite complex, interwoven with symbolism, underlying truth and meaning, passion and madness. It is not suitable for a younger crowd. … there is much speculation about the possible "nudity" involved in some of the scenes, but there have been various renditions of this production without nudity as well. None of that has been determined as yet.
The play is scheduled to run in the spring. UPDATE: According to Dan Radcliffe's publicist Vanessa Davies, there will be a nude scene. Quote:
This is an extraordinary play and, yes, there is a scene of nudity in it, but that's not what the play is about.
He (Dan) finishes shooting 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' in October or November and rehearsals are starting in January. The play is expected to open in March.
This shouldn't affect ' Half-Blood Prince', given that ' Order of the Phoenix' will be in post-production during the time in which Dan is due to star in this play. UPDATE #2: The Daily Mail states that the play will run from February 27th to June 19th.  | |

Er...eww. I don't think I really want to see this play, I really don't think Daniel is that fantastic of an actor, he dissipponted me in GoF and in PoA. I'm suprised he was chosen the fufill the role and having a nude scene, that's just gross [the whole thing about Dan being nude on stage kinda freaks me out.]

From what i've heard of the original play, it's really intriguing.
upon hearing Dan was going to play Alan, i was very dubieuss, as i'm not sure his acting skills will do it justice, however i'm hoping he'll prove me wrong, as he did prove me wrong about his acting skills already thus far.

For once, I'm glad I live in America yeah but don't forget that you know nothing about theater, the director, producer and the writer of this play they ALL love Dan's performance in a workshop he did last year, so it seems to me that they know what they are doing, oh and theater is about art, they don't care is the actor is popular or not specially in this kind of play!  | |

He CAN'T play Alan Strang in Equus. That's my favorite play, and Daniel Radcliffe is possibly the least talented actor on earth. Alan Strang is a seriously emotional, deep, and moving role to play. Anytime anybody does that monologue from the nudity scene, it generally makes the audience cry. i definitely don"t think he has that kind of talent. Way to ruin the play, Daniel. =P

Wow that is awsome can't wait. I know that even if it is in London that is still awsome and I say go Dan to that. Maybe (even though it will cost alot) I can talk my parents into letting me go and see it! but that would mean, most likley, no birthday or christmas presents for the rest of my young years. Oh well, who cares it's London and Dan!!!!!! Who would say no!!!

I think its great that hes doing a play like this. Its different then Harry Potter and Dan will be able to show us more of his abilities in acting. Most of the play is usually done in nudity but the version he is doing most likley wont be. If it is then hes just showing his confidence in himself as an actor.

I was watching GoF again yesterday, and I was observing Dan acting, not just someone playing Harry. I noticed that he has improved loads from the earlier films, and I think he really has the potential to become a good actor if he works on it. This is a good project to take for him, so I wish him luck.
For the meantine, I will just grit my teeth and get over the injustice of not being able to watch this.

When I think about what Dan actually said, the more I believe that he probably won't show up naked. "I'll do whatever is required" sounds as if he doesn't want to stop the hype and publicity around the possibility of him being naked but is being ambiguous about whether he'll be nude or not and thus letting the media run with the idea. In the end, he'll probably just wear a nude suit. It's still a pretty controversial play whether he ends up doing the nude part or not. It's just kind of weird to think his parents would approve of this.  | |
