A while ago, there was a rumuor going around about Dan Radcliffe appearing as Alan Strang in the play Equus. The rumour was debunked, however, as he was not in the play at that time due to his filming schedule. It has now been confirmed that Dan will be in the play, along with fellow HP actor Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon).
Dan sent the following message to DR.com and DR.co.uk: Quote:

This is obviously a huge departure for me as an actor, but Equus is such an amazing play that this really was an opportunity not to be missed. Rehearsal starts in January and I am very much looking forward to working with Thea Sharock who is an incredibly talented director. I only hope I do the role justice.

Peter Shaffer's Equus first premiered in 1973 in London, England and won a multitude of awards. Equus focuses on the relationship between seventeen-year-old Alan Strang (Radcliffe), who has blinded six horses with a spike, and Martin Dysart (Griffiths), a middle-aged psychiatrist who tries to figure out what drove Strang to commit the crime.
The play itself is quite complex, interwoven with symbolism, underlying truth and meaning, passion and madness. It is not suitable for a younger crowd. … there is much speculation about the possible "nudity" involved in some of the scenes, but there have been various renditions of this production without nudity as well. None of that has been determined as yet.
The play is scheduled to run in the spring. UPDATE: According to Dan Radcliffe's publicist Vanessa Davies, there will be a nude scene. Quote:
This is an extraordinary play and, yes, there is a scene of nudity in it, but that's not what the play is about.
He (Dan) finishes shooting 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' in October or November and rehearsals are starting in January. The play is expected to open in March.
This shouldn't affect ' Half-Blood Prince', given that ' Order of the Phoenix' will be in post-production during the time in which Dan is due to star in this play. UPDATE #2: The Daily Mail states that the play will run from February 27th to June 19th.  | |

I think this is a wrong career move for Dan. If all they want to acheve is the hype, attention and publicity -- no doubt they've achieved their goal here. The next question however is will they achieve anything more for Dan than that?
IMHO, the only thing this will achieve for him is let the public know that he is willing to do nudity and very adult-themed roles. And it may set a precedent, that the only offers he will get will always require him to do nudity and such other sexual acts.
I know a lot of people will not understand how one could rationalize doing nudity and such other sensitive acts that he will perform in this play for the sake of artistic or self expression. The work he has done so far is okay and he doesn’t need to change into an exhibitionist to prove anything. Its a disappointing turn.
Out of all the many wonderful plays out there, I wonder why he has to choose this one-- or is he getting "other offers" anyway? From every angle, it looks like a desperate attempt to disengage from his "Potter/hero/goody-two-shoes" image. Its too drastic, too extreme and too soon -- he doesn't need to do it this way, and at this point. He's only 17 and he still has 2 more HP movies to do. I read somewhere that the last actor who played this role back in 1975 was in his 20s!
Nevertheless, this is really one bold move for Dan. Plays are far more difficult than movies. Julia Roberts is an Oscar winner, yet she got horrible reviews for her performance in Broadway.

Wow! Poor Dan! You lot are really slating him for doing this! I wish him luck, it's his right to choose what roles he goes for and good on him for doing something risky. So many child actors get typecast and can't seem to move on, so when they do get too old they don't get any more offers. A far as I know nearly all the main adult Potter cast have done nude/contraversial films in their time and it hasn't done them any harm - so stop being so prudish! Just go see Ibiza and you'd see plenty of 17 year old getting naked!

I saw alot of people saying stuff about Dan riding a horse nude across the stage. In the book it is very specific about the horses. Its a person with a metal horse shaped mask on. And knowing my horse and many others they would freak hearing the sound of their hooves on a stage. And if that scene is played nude he will most likely be wearing a skin colored suit or somthing.
